Governor's Ball

The schedule has been revealed for the Governor's Ball Music Festival taking place at Governor's Island on June 18. The festival has artists performing on two stages (Big Apple Stage and Gotham Stage), but with no overlapping sets. The two stages means no long changeovers either though. You can run and back and forth and catch all of everyone. Das Racist have been added since the initial lineup announcement, though they go on pretty early. Tickets are still available. Check out the schedule, and a video interview with Girl Talk, below.

Jason Forrest

Electronic music producer, musician and DJ Jason Forrest plays a free show at Public Assembly tonight (6/3) with Star Eyes, Dev/Null, and Lil Internet. Saturday (6/4) is the first-ever NYC screening of content from Jason's new online TV network Network Awesome at 92Y Tribeca. According to Jason, who launched the website in January:

"There's a fantastic amount of incredible TV shows, movies, interviews and videos that are just not getting the exposure they deserve. I started to wonder what would happen if someone put all these bits of culture together, and this is the main concept behind Network Awesome. We are passionate about sharing what we think is interesting, entertaining and culturally relevant. It's like with your friends, you say 'Cool, look at this!'"
The NYC screening will consist of short films by Karel Zeman, Sally Cruikshank and Guido Manuli, and a rare presentation of the TV show Electra Woman and Dyna Girl. According to 92Y's website, "Special guests will be on hand", though it doesn't specifically say if Jason will be there (we assume he will be). Tickets are available. Check out a video teaser for the show below.

In April, Network Awesome posted a "Live Music Show" curated by Das Racist. Their more-recent Live Music Show was curated by Jason himself. In May they posted "A Time Capsule of Early 1980s NYC's Lower East Side or, "New York's Alright (If You Like Basquiat)": Downtown 81." Browse the site for more.

Jason released an album called The Everything on April 15 in Germany via Staatsakt. You can download the album on iTunes and check out the artwork, tracklist, and the track "New Religion" below.

Flaming Lips / Modest Mouse
Sasquatch
Sasquatch

"Rockers The Flaming Lips have long had a reputation for extravagant live shows: Fake blood, torrential confetti downpours, animal costumes and comically oversized fists are all standard fare. The band's Sunday night set at this year's Sasquatch Music Festival was no exception, with frontman Wayne Coyne taking to the crowd in his over-sized bubble. Still, the band managed to make its big, flashy show feel like a more intimate affair.

While playing the landmark 1999 album The Soft Bulletin nearly in full, Coyne chatted genially with the audience, taking frequent breaks during "The Spiderbite Song" to relate the anecdotes behind the song's lyrics. Another set highlight, "Waitin' for a Superman" -- stripped down to a delicate piano and voice arrangement -- was introduced as a tribute to departed icon Elliott Smith. Although the band was forced to exclude a couple of songs due to time constraints, it delivered a personal version of what many consider its finest album." [listen @ NPR]

Sasquatch Fest ended Monday night (pictures from that day coming soon). Audio of many of the sets, Flaming Lips included, is archived for streaming over at NPR. Like Archers of Loaf, the Flaming Lips, Modest Mouse, Yeasayer, Flying Lotus and many others played on Sunday (the third of four days). More pictures from that day, below...

TVOTR @ MHOW (4/12)
TV On The Radio

"...the immediately captivating Nine Types of Light movie is now available to stream on YouTube and purchase via iTunes, the same day the brand new, and largely beloved album of the same name hits streets. TV on the Radio's approach to promoting this album - through not only words and music, but also by epically re-imagining the album visually - is a truly forward thinking moment brought to you by one of music's most groundbreaking acts.

The film includes a music video for every song on the album. The band personally asked their friends and the filmmakers they admired to help direct the music videos. Tunde Adebimpe, the director for the film, storybooked the music videos together with interviews from local New Yorkers on various topics, including dreams, love, fame and the future. Tunde also directed the music video for "Forgotten."..."
Watch the entire movie at the end of this post. The list of directors and tracklist is down there too.

TV on the Radio celebrated "Nine Types of Light" with a hometown show at Music Hall of Williamsburg last night (4/12). Das Racist were the surprise opener. TV on the Radio step it up a notch with a headlining show at Radio City Music Hall tonight (4/13), before continuing on tour. Tickets for the big Manhattan show are still available (Light Asylum open). More pictures from last night, including the setlist, are below...

Sasquatch

Big names and regulars aside, there are a few bands I want to highlight on the just-announced Sasquatch lineup: Wolf Parade ("indefinite hiatus" rumors be damned), The Flaming Lips (performing "The Soft Bulletin"), Death From Above 1979 (now three reunion shows total), Guided By Voices (they're not done yet), and... Archers of Loaf (!). The full lineup of the fest that goes down in Gorge, Washington in May (Memorial Day Weekend), is below...

Lupe Fiasco

Lupe Fiasco is currently in Australia as part of the Big Day Out Festival, touring with names like Iggy Pop, Deftones, Grinderman, and countless others. After returning back to the states, he'll get ready to welcome his new LP Lasers into this world, due on March 8th. The Chicago MC will celebrate the release with a date at Webster Hall the night before it hits the streets and tickets go on sale at noon today (1/28). Lupe recently released the first single from the LP, the Modest Mouse-sampling "The Show Must Go On" via iTunes.

Tickets also go on sale at noon for Rick Ross at Best Buy Theater on March 4th, and fortunately if you can't make that show you can make it out to see him support Lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj at Nassau Coliseum on March 27th as part of the I Am Music II tour. Ticket info for that show hasn't been released yet. All dates below.

Those of you who want to see Lil Wayne but might prefer to see him in a much (much) different setting than the third of three hip hop acts (instead with Motley Crue, Waka Flocka Flame, Insane Clown Posse & Bruno Mars?) can catch the recently freed MC at Bamboozle 2011 in New Jersey. Tickets are still available for the festival in multi-day, and single day pass increments.

And lets say, for some godforsaken reason you felt like a double dose of Insane Clown Posse.... that can be arranged. Insane Clown Posse has taken time off of their busy wrestling schedule to shower New York City with Faygo on April 29th at Gramercy Theater. Tickets are still available all of you Juggalos and Juggalettes!

Full Bamboozle lineup and all Lil Wayne tour dates are below.

Furthur (no "e") has headlined Madision Square Garden which isn't a big surprise given that the band contains original Grateful Dead members Bob Weir and Phil Lesh along with fellow hippies John Kadlecik of the Dark Star Orchestra on guitar, Jeff Chimenti of RatDog on keyboards, and Joe Russo of the Benevento/Russo Duo on drums (Jay Lane left Furthur after the March 12, 2010 show to rejoin Primus). Tickets go on presale on Thursday at 10am for EIGHT NYC shows happening in March. Five are at Best Buy Theater and three are at Radio City Music Hall.

Speaking of Radio City Music Hall, Janet Jackson is playing there on March 18th. Tickets go on presale Friday at 9am.

Janet Jackson notoriously had a "wardrobe malfunction" when she played the Superbowl Halftime show once. Tickets are now on sale for the show Neko Case is playing at the Bell House on Superbowl Sunday.

Eluvium was added to the Explosions in the Sky / Low show happening at Radio City on April 6th. Tickets are still on sale.

Tickets are on AmEx presale now for the Motorhead/Clutch/Valient Thorr show happening at Best Buy Theater. Tickets go on sale Friday for the same lineup at Starland Ballroom.

Fang Island is playing a headlining show at Bowery Ballroom on March 11th. Openers TBA. Tickets go on sale Friday at noon.

Tickets are now on AmEx presale for the Toro Y Moi shows at Bowery Ballroom and Music Hall of Williamsburg.

Tickets are on AmEx presale for the Hold Steady shows at MHOW & Terminal 5.

Tickets are now on AmEx presale for the Cave Singers / Lia Ices show at Music Hall of Williamsburg.

Holy Ghost!, who has headlined Bowery Ballroom before (not sure how it sold though) will headline Mercury Lounge on February 2nd. Tickets are now on sale.

Tickets are on Amex presale for the Lost in the Trees show at Mercury Lounge.

Tricky was recently in town, and Morcheeba will be here in February to play two shows at Irving Plaza which are both on sale.

Cassie & Justin as the White Stripes
Cassie & Justin

"Todd P's Halloween party took place [Sunday] night at the Ridgewood Masonic Temple. most people were probably still recovering from Halloween observed the night before, but a respectable amount of ghouls and tricksters made their way to the show, headlined by so-hot-right-now hip hop ensemble Das Racist.

Halloween is a time when you can see what people are really about. They're either in a pre-packaged costume or they're trying too hard or they are legitimately clever and good-spirited. And for Das Racist, it can be all of the above all the time. These guys walk the lines between irony and sincerity; between novelty and legitimacy; between gimmickry and credibility. And while some people show up at the party dressed as a can of Four Loko, others as zombies or superheroes, Das Racist can just take the floor as themselves and still be baffling and maybe a little frightening.

This set was, by all definitions, a shit show. You know when your friends have an inside joke and they are cracking up about it, and the joke is sort of independently funny, but not nearly as funny as your friends' uproar would suggest? Combine that feeling with the feeling of seeing your little brother get way too drunk at a party you invited him to. That was what the stage presence of Das Racist was like. And it was a fucking party." [Free Williamsburg]

Das Racist headlined the show of mostly locals which included a set by Vivian Girl Cassie Ramone and Justin (both in the Babies) as the White Stripes, but more notable was that The Intelligence, in from Seattle, were on also on the bill (the Intelligence also played Cake Shop one night earlier). Denver's Pictureplane, who was the special guest at the show that took place last night (11/2) at Brooklyn Bowl, was one of the artists who played too. Boshra AlSaadi aka SAADI played with Janka Nabay & the Bubu Gang.

Blissed Out went on right at 8:00 along with the doors opening which meant not many people around to hear their set, but the 9-band show filled up as the night went on. More pictures below...

"new Showpaper cover's apparently scandalising the community. haha get over it, the back of VillageVoice or NYPress is ok, but not out front?" - Todd P

Showpaper

The above quoted tweet above doesn't flat out say what you'll find on the cover of the new issue of Showpaper, their 89th one-sheet, designed by artist Borden Capalino, but it gives a pretty good idea. For that image, which mimes the fairly explicit ads in many NYC weeklys (and brings to mind the fact that Craigslist recently removed its own 'adult services' ads), click below.

Showpaper will be running a gallery on 42nd Street through the end of December. It opens this Friday, October 8th, with DJ sets by Das Racist and International Tapes and solo music from The Beets' Juan Wauters. The installation will have art, DIY video games...

Das Racist

Das Racist took part in the second to last performance piece curated by contemporary California artist Martin Kersels at the Whitney Museum on Friday. Martin originally created an "imaginary" stage to be used for the Whitney's Biennial as a sculpture and place to hold performances. On Friday, CalArts professor Leslie Dick gave a lecture on her interpretation of an essay by famed psychoanalyst Jacque Lacan, Mirror Stage. She says the Mirror Stage is Lacan's conclusion that "knowledge is always detoured through wishful thinking and mistaken identity." In her talk, she admitted that she discovered Das Racist through her 18-year old daughter. She figured that the band and their song entitled "Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell" was the perfect example for her lecture on how knowledge could be often misconstrued and twisted to what the people want. Scott Plagenhoef from Pitchfork painfully described how some people feel upon hearing the band's hipster summer anthem:

"Reactions within our staff have ranged from "I'd like to punch these guys in the face" and "this was sent here to destroy my interest in music" to "Harold and Kumar existentialism" (this wasn't me) and "a critique of commercialism/lack of a leisure culture" (um, this was). At its heart though, "Combination"-- especially this superior Wallpaper. remix-- is just a funny, stupid, silly, brainy, knowing song all at once."
If that was still a bit wordy for you, MTV Iggy dumbs down it down to a comic on how to explain Das Racist to your mom.

DJ Spooky performed at the event later. Pictures from the Das Racist part below...

Culture Shock

The lineup is out for Culture Shock 2010, which will take place April 16th and 17th at SUNY Purchase. Headliners for this year's fest are pop-punk band Bayside (avoid the "Beautiful Girls" cover on their MySpace) (and check out another version above) and indie-pop collective Los Campesinos (who'll play Irving Plaza April 22nd) Friday night, and rapper Jay Electronica and The Books on Saturday. The rest of the bill is a varied mix that includes Surfer Blood, Black Milk, Maps & Atlases, L Mag Band You Need To Hear Ava Luna, Maluca, Das Racist, The So So Glos and Turbo Fruits. The annual event isn't technically open to non-students. The full lineup is below.

Last year's lineup was headlined by Drake and The Cool Kids. In 2008, Fucked Up's headlining performance was cut short by the police.

The bands were announced earlier this month via film at an event at the school. That video, the lineup and more are below...

Dan Deacon

After spending four days in Austin for SXSW, my personal MtyMx experience started with an all-day trip from Austin to Monterrey on Sunday. I arrived to see Andrew W.K.'s set that night, the after-party at the Garage, and Monday from first to last band (minus the comedy set with Dan Deacon, though there are pictures of him too). I'm now writing this from Tennessee where the Big Ears Fest is about to begin. Stay tuned for reports about that, and check out my pictures from the festival in Mexico, with captions, below...
