There is so much going on between now and Tuesday (2/13), I'm breaking This Week in Indie into two parts. Today you get Thursday, Friday and some of Saturday, then tomorrow will be Pt 2 with more Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. For those of you who aren't going to Austin next week (and I know most people aren't even if it seems otherwise sometimes reading the internet) you get a chance to sample some of the international action with bands from all over the world in town before (and after) the fest. I should warn you there are a lot of bands who spell their names with all-caps in the post. I am not shouting at you.
First thing, we're giving away a pair of tickets to Django Django's sold-out U.S. debut at Glasslands Saturday night which BrooklynVegan is presenting with Popgun Booking. I'm pretty psyched for this show. Their debut album is out now digitally (and on Spotify) in the U.S. and is one of my favorites of 2012: danceable, melodic, trippy and organic, owing more than a little to fellow Scots The Beta Band. (Go figure: main Django Dave Maclean's older brother John was in the Betas and The Aliens.) Says The Guardian:
Those worried that British guitar music has lost its ability to refresh old forms should pay heed to Django Django, whose debut album posits an updated psychedelia that beguiles and delights. Their foundations are a rickety, minimal take on the music of the immediate pre-psychedelic era - Hail Bop employs heavily tremeloed surf guitar; Default takes Bo Diddley's shave-and-a-haircut-two-bits beat and bolts on a jerky R&B guitar line - over which are laid skittering electronics and bleached, vibratoless harmonies, as if Django Django's four members were supplicants worshipping the desert sunrise. Yet it's also an exercise in clever restraint: drummer and band mastermind David Maclean often eschews everything bar his kick drum, floor tom, cymbals and tambourines, creating an amniotic throb.Also playing the Glasslands show will be D. Gookin, a last-minute sub for Kwes who had some visa issues. (I'll be DJing between bands.) If you can't make it Saturday night, Django Django play again on Monday at Santos (we're also presenting this show too with Neon Gold and Popgun) with the very au courant Charli XCX and Clock Opera (who play a now-sold out show at Knitting Factory too). Playing Glasslands earlier in the night on Saturday (a separate show) is another UK act, Daughter, who also play an early show the night before (3/9) at Mercury Lounge and our Friday day party at Hotel Vegas at SXSW. Originally a solo project for UK singer-songwriter Elena Tonra, Daughter is now a proper band with electric guitarist (and Tonra's boyfriend) Igor Haefeli and drummer Remi Aguilella. The band just signed to Glassnote who released Daughter's new EP, His Young Heart, which is streamable at the bottom of this post. (You can also download the EP's closing track at the top of this post.) Fans of Sharon Van Etten, Mountain Man and other spooky folk acts should not miss them.
METZ at M for Montreal 2010
Backing up a bit to tonight (3/8) and shifting gears entirely, Toronto trio METZ make their NYC debut at Cake Shop. These guys make blazing, spazzy noise rock, reminiscent of Brainiac, the roster of Amphetamine Reptile, or McLusky. They're pretty excellent in their din, with enough form and hooks to grab hold of too. The band only have a few singles under their belt (all of which you can stream/download for free at their Bandcamp) but their debut album is in the can waiting for some lucky label to release it.
METZ are down visiting our city with their neighbors Teenanger whose debut album, Frights, is a 9-song, 20-minute kick in the head that may remind some of The Hives or The Intelligence. There's a lot of snarl and sneer, and the production is great -- clear but not slick. The whole of Frights is streaming over at Canadian website Exclaim!. You can also download a track above and watch a couple videos (both are pretty cool) at the bottom of this post.
Tonight's Cake Shop show, METZ and Teenanger are the first two bands on the bill so you might get out of there by 11 if you've got somewhere else to go. Tomorrow night (3/9), they both play Death By Audio with Pop. 1280 making for a very appealing, angsty bill.
More Canadians in town, this time on the electronic tip: TRUST and Doldrums who play a late show tonight (3/8) at Mercury Lounge and an early show at Glasslands tomorrow (3/9). After that it's off to Austin (where TRUST is also on the bill of our Friday day party at Hotel Vegas), and then some West Coast dates, a few of which are with Blood Orange. All dates, including many SXSW-week appearances, are at the bottom of this post.
TRUST, a duo consisting of is Austra drummer Maya Postepski and vocalist Robert Alfons, make vaguely gothy/sleazy synth pop that you could imagine being danced to in warehouses in 1987. The sleaze is apparent with song titles like "Candy Walls," "Gloryhole" and "This Willing Flesh." Musically, I dig TRUST but Alfons sounds more than a little like Bill Hader's Vincent Price impression which makes the whole thing borderline novelty. Their debut, TRST, is out now on Arts & Crafts and you can stream it on Spotify. I bet it sounds great in a club, though, and will say the vocals are less egregious live, and will say I thought TRUST was good last year when I saw them open for Austra.
Doldrums is Toronto resident Alrick Woodhead who guests on Grimes' Visions and will soon be touring with Bear in Heaven. I've seen him perform a few times, like at M for Montreal where I wrote:
(Doldrums) was wonderfully ADD, twiddling knobs, hammering sample triggers and pacing around the stage. Too many ideas crammed into one 20-minute set? Maybe, but it was exciting seeing talent that is only just now beginning to show its potential.I thought he was even better when I caught him at Glasslands back in December. You're going to be hearing a lot more about this one in 2012.
The Glasslands show on Friday is also with Black Marble, a new musical venture from a couple of the Team Robspierre dudes that definitely falls in the minimal wave pigeonhole. Their Weight Against the Door EP came out last month on Hardly Art last month
Later that night at Glasslands its a separate show, with UK electro rockers TEETH. TEETH's debut album, Whatever, came out last year on Moshi Moshi and garnered favorable reviews and comparisons to Crystal Castles and Ponytail. It's loud. It's squelchy. It sounds like being off your face which is probably the optimal way to listen to them. You can stream Whatever on Spotify. The show (doors 11:30) also has Extreme Animals, Nike7Up, and a DJ set from True Womanhood so be ready to go all night.

It's a fun night of dancey electronic music when those Kitsune folks (they of the many Maison compilations) bring Gigamesh, Plastic Plates, Computer Magic, Perseus, and JDH to Santos.

Norway's Datarock will be doing a lot of traveling this March when they play 'four shows on three continents in one week.' The shows include a Norway show, a US show which happens in NYC on March 9 at The Studio at Webster Hall with Rubbing Alcohol and DJ Abbey Braden, and then a Mexico show and a Colombia show. During our CMJ parties this past October, we partnered with Sony Bloggie to film a video series ("Green Room Sessions") of exclusive performances by artists, many of whom also played at our CMJ events. All of the videos were shot on nothing but Bloggies. We've been slowly revealing some of the videos from the series, but the most of them are finally here and can be watched below.
Chelsea Wolfe performed a new/non-album track called "Feral Love," accompanied only by brooding synths and beats from band member Ben Chisholm, making for a more similar performance to Chelsea's "solo" NYC debut than the full band set she delivered at our Friday party (10/21).
Members of Datarock, sitting on a ladder, played an acoustic guitar/saxophone and red-suit-less rendition of their song "True Stories," which they said they have to play when they're in NYC, as it is their tribute to Talking Heads, with every lyric in the song being a Talking Heads song title.
Laura Stevenson and her Don Giovanni labelmates Shellshag both played songs for us. Laura played a solo acoustic version of "Barnacles" from the Laura Stevenson and the Cans' album Sit Resist on the staircase to the green room at Public Assembly, whereas Shellshag took us out to the waterfront for a stripped down performance of "Face to Face."
Ólöf Arnalds played a new song called "Sudden Elevation" and a cover of Neil Diamond's "Solitary Man" which is one of the covers on her new mini album.
Peelander-Z took us outside on North 6th Street, shortly after playing our day party in Public Assembly. With no instruments except their voices, they wrote us a theme song.
Similarly to Chelsea Wolfe, Channy Caselle of Polica performed with just a microphone and samples playing through a guitar amp, as opposed to the massive dual drum rumbling set Polica played at our Saturday party (10/22). She performed "Happy Be Fine" off their upcoming debut LP, Give You the Ghost.
New Zealand band Street Chant, who played our Saturday party, played two songs for us after their set, "Stoned Again" and "You Do the Maths." For both songs, frontwoman Emily Littler played guitar and sang as the rest of her band and members of The Suzan provided claps and backup vocals.
Dave Quon of We Barbarians, who were also on the Saturday party, played an acoustic version of "Chambray" off the band's Headspace EP backstage after their set.
We Were Promised Jetbacks, who were announced on our Thursday (10/20) party at the last minute, played as a three piece because one of their members hadn't arrived to NYC yet at that point. Then, to size their lineup down even more, frontman Adam Thompson performed two songs on his own for us with his acoustic guitar (filmed on the same day they headlined Webster Hall).

The first round of CMJ 2011 artists have been announced. Just wanted to take a second to also say that our thoughts and condolences are with the people of Norway today.

DOWNLOAD: Datarock - Catcher in the Rye (MP3)
Norway's kitschy electro combo Datarock are back in the U.S. for a tour that starts with a March 7 stop at Santos and then winds its way down to SXSW. The band are also set to release "Catcher in the Rye" on March 21 which has been dubbed "The Most Extravagant Single in History." How extravagant is that exactly? Says the press release:
The single will come as a designer toy with a USB stick that features 110 tracks, 1500 photos taken at their shows in 33 countries, 20 music videos, and Never Say Die, a brand new hour-long concert film. The single will also be released as a digital 5 track EP. The USB features the EP, the new album Music For Synchronization, both of their previous albums with bonus tracks, the new Lost and Found b-sides and rarities compilation, 15 new instrumentals, and the 40 track remix album Mixed Up. The toy was created by Brian Flynn at Hybrid Design and San Francisco based pioneer company SUPER7.Is that really considered a single? Will it be The Most Expensive USB Drive in History? No word on what this thing will set you back yet. You can, however, download "Catcher in the Rye" (which sounds a little like Matthew Wilder's '80s hit "Break My Stride") at the top of this post and check out the video below.
The Santos show sounds pretty good, with Dinowalrus and The Suzan opening. All Datarock North American tour dates, some of which are with Dirty Ghosts, are below as well...

Kings of Convenience @ Bowery Ballroom - Sept 10 (more by Fresh Bread)
While my favorite show from last week was definitely Kings of Convenience at Bowery Ballroom, Tonight We Ride at Santos (which I headed to immediately afterward) was quite good too. I caught most of Human Life's set which was very upbeat and energetic, but the vocals reminded me of radio "club hits" a bit too much. After set-up and a brief transitional dj set in between, the Glass went on around 12:30. The duo of DJ Wool and Dominique Keegan opened their set with one of their new songs "Wanna Be Dancin' " which was a little on the quiet side. Things picked up by the next track which was "Come Alive" and only got better with each song. Superhero (which is the Glass' next single, due out next month) was amazing and really stood out. The Glass followed with some earlier tracks, "Won't Bother Me" and "Mad At You", rounding out a great set of both new and classic material.

When it comes to licensing, Tom Waits has a strong reputation..
Waits has steadfastly refused to allow the use of his songs in commercials and has joked about other artists who do. ("If Michael Jackson wants to work for Pepsi, why doesn't he just get himself a suit and an office in their headquarters and be done with it?") He has filed several lawsuits against advertisers who used his material without permission. He has been quoted as saying, "Apparently, the highest compliment our culture grants artists nowadays is to be in an ad -- ideally, naked and purring on the hood of a new car," he said in a statement, referring to the Mercury Cougar. "I have adamantly and repeatedly refused this dubious honor....Speaking in an interview in 2005 to NPR's All Things Considered, Waits bluntly says "I'd rather have a hot lead enema" than have a song in a commercial. At the time he was referring to products like Doritos, cars and diapers. His stance isn't as strong when it comes to a good cause. His song "Never Let Go" is the soundtrack to a new PSA by the Ad Council for Feeding America.
...In 2005, Waits sued Adam Opel AG, claiming that, after having failed to sign him to sing in their Scandinavian commercials, they had hired a soundalike singer. In 2007, the suit was settled, and Waits gave the sum to charity." [Wikipedia]
The campaign, shot by American History X director Tony Kaye, launched November 25th and is intended to raise awareness and drive action to fight hunger in America.
Created pro bono by Ogilvy NY, the new TV, radio, print, and web advertising aims to change the way Americans look at this critical issue affecting our country and to understand the fact that many people they interact with on a daily basis may not know where their next meal will come from...Waits says of the project: "We all need to be reminded that the folks who need help getting back on their feet are all members of our family." "We are thrilled to partner with Feeding America to educate Americans about just how close hunger is to each one of us," according to Peggy Conlon, President & CEO of The Advertising Council. "I believe that the 1 in 8 campaign will inspire Americans to become involved in this critical issue."
"This work uses simple visual imagery to demonstrate the reality of the fact that everyone today knows someone who is hungry," said Antonio Navas and Chris Bradley, creative directors at Ogilvy who developed the campaign. "We were very fortunate to get musician Tom Waits to contribute a beautiful piece of music - "Never Let Go" off of 2006's Orphans -- that helps bring the work to life and connect with the public in a tangible way. We believe it will have great impact on this important cause."
Per the Ad Council model, the PSAs will be distributed to media outlets nationwide this week and will run and air in advertising time and space that is donated by the media.
Other Notable Licensing News:
Another band that usually passes on licensing requests for its music is Arcade Fire. The Canadian band decided to let its song "My Body Is A Cage" be used in the trailer for the new Brad Pitt movie, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
According to the Arcade Fire's management, "This is the first time the band have used their music in this way. David Fincher asked them to look at the trailer. They all thought it was a good use of the music. They have no issue with licensing music when it's used in a creative way. It rarely happens." [Pitchfork]Watch the trailer below.
The soundtrack to Juno continues to inspire advertising creatives. One of Barry Louis Polisar's songs from that soundtrack, "All I Want Is You", gives it a go in a spot for the National Lottery in the UK. The commercial can be seen below.
I've seen the commercial for Ubisoft's new Prince Of Persia game on air this past week. Just like the trailer (watch it below), the spot features the song "Saeglopur" by Sigur Ros. This is the second video game featuring Sigur Ros music - EA's trailer for Dead Space (released in October 2008) uses "Track 7" as the soundtrack.
The Shins' "Sleeping Lessons" provides a cool soundtrack to Statkraft Energy's new European commercial. Watch it at Boards Mag.
Sony has released quite a few new commercials recently for both the PS3 and PSP that have good musical soundtracks. The "Mural" spot features "Everybody Ona Move" by Michael Franti & Spearhead, "LA Plays PSP" has The Grouch featuring MURS' "The Bay To LA", and "NYC Plays PSP" uses Chromeo's "Fancy Footwork". Datarock have some catchy recorded songs, and their stage show is good for pictures if nothing else. They've been on tour with Ladytron and the other night they opened for them at Terminal 5. More pictures from that show (June 25, 2008) below...
Emerging from a lengthy stint in a Parisian studio, electro-pop mavens Ladytron are finally set to return with Velocifero, the follow-up to 2005's opus Witching Hour, slated to land stateside June 3 courtesy of their new label, Nettwerk Music Group. The new record was produced by Ladytron with additional production by Alessandro Cortini (Modwheelmood, NIN), and Vicarious Bliss of Ed Banger Records (Justice, etc), and mixing courtesy of Michael Patterson (Beck, P. Diddy). Not coincidentally, Ladytron will hit the road this spring alongside sonically like-minded outfit Datarock, and also appear at this summer's Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival. So basically I got really into Datarock there for a second, but then i saw them at SXSW and that excitement turned into almost complete disinterest. Maybe after watching their recent appearance on Kimmel you'll understand why (unless you've already seen them live in which case you may already agree with me, but then again maybe not).

I think a new law has been enacted in the city of NY, and I guess everywhere now. It states that White Rabbits (who by the way recently recorded a Daytrotter session, and are playing Letterman Thursday night) must be regularly placed on the same bill as popular UK artists - whether it be Mystery Jets, The Cribs, Art Brut, M.I.A. (I know, that's a stretch), or even Kaiser Chiefs. White Rabbits, Datarock, and Kaiser Chiefs play the Beacon Theatre in NYC on September 29th. Tickets go on sale Friday. All tour dates below...
Sonic Youth's Daydream Nation was reissued this week (with bonus stuff). The original came out in 1988. If you're twenty-five now, you were six then. Eighteen year olds were negative one. Even thirty year olds were only eleven. You pretty much needed to be born by 1969 or 70 to have even had a chance of being in college when the now classic album came out. What does Daydream Nation mean to you? If the answer is 'nothing', now you can catch up and decide by (either buying it, or) streaming it this week on AOL. Decide if the ticket price is worth it. Evan says it is. (The Slits are opening in Brooklyn by the way)
I was really excited about Datarock before SXSW - so much so that I invited them to play my party, and then saw the newly-signed band twice while I was there. The first was at FADER's Outpost place - that's where these photos are from.....
What sucked was that I didn't really love the FADER show - kind of a let down - just silly, but fun. I did like them better at my show though, but I probably won't go see them again - THOUGH - I would consider it if they were part of a larger party like they are this weekend at Studio B in Brooklyn (with David Bruno-approved DJ's Low Budget and Trouble & Bass, and a live set by Passions).
The Norwegian band's tour kicks off in Philly tonight (June 1, 2007). All dates and pictures below....
