Fool's Gold Day Off is returning to the City Winery Backyard on September 5 (aka Labor Day) with Juicy J, Danny Brown, AraabMUZIK, Just Blaze, Brothers Macklovitch (A-Trak & Dave1), Cubic Zirconia, and more. The all ages event runs from 2-8 PM and admission is free.

Juicy J aka 1/2 of Three 6 Mafia also has other dates coming up, all of which are listed below.

As previously mentioned, AraabMUZIK also tours with and opens for SBTRKT at Bowery Ballroom (10/31). SBTRKT's show the next night (11/1) at MHOW in Brooklyn didn't have an opener, but now it does and it's Cubic Zirconia. Tickets for both of those shows are still on sale.

Dave 1 w/ Holy Ghost! @ MHOW - 4/30/2011
Holy Ghost

LCD Soundsystem may be done but DFA Records still has a strong presence, especially lately, and especially Saturday night in NYC when Free Energy played Glasslands while Holy Ghost! headlined a sold out show at Music Hall of Williamsburg where they were joined by Nancy Whang on vocals and surprise guest Dave 1 from Chromeo on guitar. Holy Ghost's setlist and some videos are below. Later in the night Nancy headed to Webster Hall to hang with Classixx while Juan Maclean and friends DJ'd at Cameo.

Holy Ghost! recently released a video for "Wait & See" which stars the duo's actual fathers. Check that out below. Holy Ghost! are on the lineup of the HARD Summer Fest happening in LA on August 6th, as are DFA artists Shit Robot, Special Disco Version (James and Pat), and Still Going. Shit Robot also recently released a new video for "Losing My Patience" which features Alexis Taylor of Hot Chip. Watch that below.

DFA DJ Justin Miller is DJing at Hell's Kitchen on Tuesday night (5/3). NSFW flyer HERE. Matt Thornley DJ's with Midnight Magic at Public Assembly on Thursday.

Earlier last week, the DFA-signed YACHT came through town for their own big headlining show which was at Webster Hall with Light Asylum. A set of pictures from that show are also in this post and they continue with the other stuff, below...

MTVu Woodies 2009

Indie darlings Matt & Kim kicked off the show -- which celebrates the year's best music as determined by MTVu's college-centric audience -- with an energetic performance of their breakout single "Lessons Learned." Later, the duo returned to accept their Best Video Woodie award.

"We've had one heck of a year," said Matt Johnson, before counterpart Kim Schifino leapt into the crowd.

Additional performers included veteran alt-rockers Death Cab for Cutie, who rocked the audience with its "New Moon" soundtrack single "Meet Me on the Equinox," as well as Passion Pit, the Dead Weather and Clipse, who were joined onstage by fellow rappers Cam'ron and Rick Ross.

Presenter highlights came from Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz and pop prankserts 3OH!3. Wentz rolled onto the stage holding a red Solo cup, while 3OH!3 gave a nod to Lady Gaga by dressing in her various VMA outfits. Asher Roth, will.i.am, and surprise guest Cyndi Lauper also presented awards. [Billboard]

Cyndi presented an award with Gossip Girl's Leighton Meester who also recently made an appearance at the Weezer (and Matt & Kim) show on Halloween that was sponsored by RXP aka the Matt Pinfield station. Matt was also at the Woodies as was Diplo who was DJing and David Cross, Zooey Deschanel, Janelle Monae, Dave 1 from Chromeo, and Mary Louise Parker. Matt and Kim didn't get naked like they do in their winning video (their second MTV win for that video), but their backup singers did strip down to their underwear.

MTVu Woodies 2009

The Dead Weather also played a show one day before the Woodies in Brooklyn. The Woodies air December 4th at 10pm. More pictures from the event (11/18 at Roseland Ballroom in NYC), below...

David Yow rides the crowd as beer flies
Jesus Lizard

Titus Andronicus drama aside for a second, I was worried that the "party" crowd wouldn't be a good audience for the Jesus Lizard and Bad Brains. But as security pointed out, the audience very much treated the show like the "concert" it was. It got crazy for Jesus Lizard, energetic front-man David Yow included...

"The Jesus Lizard performed a ferocious set, with singer David Yow crowd diving and singing noise rock anthems while sweaty hands held him aloft. Meanwhile, the line outside on North 10th Street snaked around the block, as hundreds of costumed revelers waited in the rain to get inside." [The Wall Street Journal???]
The crowd was ferocious too, but ironically they were 10 times more ferocious for Bad Brains whose front-man just stood there in a white hoodie. Luckily for security (who after a few songs of frustration just let the show be), Bad Brains played a lot of reggae jams. That kept it relatively calm. Bad Brains setlist below. The Jesus Lizard will be back for two more NYC shows later this month.

The bands played upstairs in the two-level warehouse on North 10th Street between Berry and Wythe. Downstairs, and between bands, there were DJs. I was especially appreciative of all the classic 90's techno hits (at the 1994-themed party). The music mixed with the warehouse location, lights, and smoke machines probably made the Vice event more Maskarave than the actual Maskarave happening across the river. That felt especially true late night, after Bad Brains which was when the majority of the crowd left (and they weren't letting anyone else in). I don't know a lot of song names, but Moby's "Thousand", Josh Wink's "Don't Laugh", and "Percolator" were at least three of the more popular ones I remember hearing during the DJ sets from Dave 1 from Chromeo, Peanut Butter Wolf, Nick Catchdubs, Rub-N-Tug, and/or Blu Jemz. Earlier in night there was also lots of classic hip hop, sometimes accompanied with the song's video.

As promised, there was a skate ramp with skaters too (and all the alcohol was free) (I wish they had more porta potties though). More pictures below...
