FNO

As mentioned, Thursday (9/5) is Fashion's Night Out. Basically another excuse to throw a party (in the name of bringing money and attention to fashion), the evening has become music-oriented in the last few years with bands playing stores all over New York City. There's a lot of stuff going on, including the Azealia Banks / DJ Cosmo performance at M.A.C. Soho we already told you about; plus Icona Pop and Maria Minerva at Urban Outfitters; Matchbox Twenty (!?!) at Bloomingdales; Haim at Topshop; La Sera at Helmut Lang; We Were Promised Jetpacks at Rockefeller Center; and Cyndi Lauper at Manolo Blahnik, just to name a few.

Below is a list of all the shows we could find with basic details and links where applicable/helpful. All shows are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted. Many have free food and booze as well. For more into visit the Fashion's Night Out website. Let us know what we missed, in the comments.

Chromatics @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
The Chromatics

Chromatics were in town this past weekend, opening for Hot Chip on Friday (7/20) and playing a headlining show at Music Hall of Williamsburg on Sunday (7/22). I caught their T5 set -- my first time seeing the group -- and they were more engaging than I thought they were going to be, with a live drummer keeping things banging. I like their new album just fine but to this point, though, Chromatics don't so much make music to dance to as music to melancholically bob your head to. Kill for Love's "Lady" and the Survivor-esque "These Streets Will Never Look the Same" came closest to getting the crowd moving. Pictures from the Brooklyn show are in this post.

In related news, Chromatics' "Lady" was the inspiration for a new videogame that's part of the Pitchfork-comissioned Soundplay series and you can play that here.

Chromatics recently played the Pitchfork Festival too (which we have pictures of). More pictures from the MHOW show, a FIXED production (that was originally supposed to happen at Dekalb Market) where the band shared a bill with DJs JDH, Dave P and Paul Raffaele, below.

The Rapture/the scene House of Vans 6/20/2012
The Rapture
The Rapture

Let the games begin. House of Vans is officially open to the public after last night's scorching show featuring The Rapture, Tanlines and DJ Dave P. The line, which headed all the way to N12th along Kent, started moving at 8PM and though some left out of frustration, it seemed easier to enter as the night progressed.

House of Vans hasn't changed much (read: at all) since last year's shows. Sectioned off drinking areas from the show (police-style barricades). Plenty of free liquids of the alcoholic/non-alcoholic type to refresh the crowd. Music fans intermingling with those out for the free booze. Aside from the zillion degree temperature, last night's show was what you've come to expect from the House of Vans space.

Following a few tracks from Dave P (who entertained the crowd intermittently all night), Tanlines opened the big stage, playing their dancey-indie to a hot and sweaty room. While the band may have solid melodies laid to tape, they are far from a live force. I've seen my share of bands play to backing tracks and with an electronic presence, but the key thing missing was the understanding of the differences between performance and a live show. Limited crowd interaction and not the most interesting band to watch by any stretch of the imagination.

It has been many years since I last caught The Rapture (opening for Daft Punk out on Coney Island) and I remembered them to have a bit more Contortions mixed in with their Chic (live anyway). This was not the case but no matter, The Rapture ripped a solid and energetic set for the packed crowd. The sound in House of Vans is far from forgiving but it the crowd went wild to their steady danceable funk groove despite the extreme humidity and only a single helicopter-sized fan to cool them off. Booties did shake.

The next House of Vans event goes down on July 12th and will feature H2O, 7 Seconds with more TBA. RSVP info is forthcoming. Lots more pictures from House of Vans, including The Rapture's set list, are below.

House of Vans

We just posted about The Rapture's upcoming three-night stint at Music Hall of Williamsburg in September, but you can see them next week when they play House of Vans (25 Franklin St., Brooklyn) with Tanlines, JDH and Dave P on June 20. It's a free show and the RSVP page is now open.

H2O, 7 Seconds and some TBAs will play House of Vans on July 12 but the RSVP is not open for that one yet, or for four that still have no lineups (there will be six total according to the initial announcement).

Flyer for the Rapture HoV show is below.

Touche Amore at House of Vans (more by BBG)
Touche Amore

If you were curious about whether this summer would see a return of the House of Vans, the home of 2011's shows with Man Man, Superchunk, Fucked Up, Tokyo Police Club and more, wonder no more.

Vans and FYF are excited to announce the return of the Vans House Parties to Brooklyn this summer. The first installment of the free concert series will kick off live from the House of Vans (25 Franklin Street) on Wednesday, June 20th with performances by The Rapture and Tanlines, and will feature a Dave P (Making Time/Fixed NYC) DJ Set. The show will be followed by a second Vans House Party on July 12th, with performances by H20, 7 Seconds, and more. There will be four additional Vans House Parties throughout the summer on July 26th, August 2nd, August 16th, and August 29th.
Still no word on who will play any of the other parties, but we'll keep you informed.

The Rapture's last NYC stint included a pair of shows at Bowery Ballroom (pictures) and Music Hall of Williamsburg (pictures).

Kindness - 'World, You Need a Change of Mind'
Kindness

UK artist Kindness (aka Adam Bainbridge) released his first full length, World, You Need a Change of Mind, earlier this year via Female Energy/Polydor and made some live appearances at SXSW. He's now set to make his NYC live debut at a FIXED show at Le Poisson Rouge on May 17 with Tezeo and FIXED DJs JDH & Dave P. Tickets are on sale now.

Kindness pulls from US disco and synth-funk and its long-standing relationship with rock, dating back to bands like Talking Heads and ESG, and on World, You Need a Change of Mind, he ends up somewhere in the middle of that spectrum. The album reaches its biggest disco-pop moment on "That's Alright," while still paying tribute to indie rock with a synthed up cover of The Replacements' "Swingin Party." That cover was initially released as a single a few years ago with the b-side, "Gee Up," which also appears on the record. It also includes Kindness's second single, "Cyan," which was issued in the US on Chris Taylor's Terrible Records. Check out some streams from the album below.

DOWNLOAD: Martyn - "Viper" (MP3)

Martyn

Martyn began DJ and promoting d&b nights in Holland as far back as 1996, but it was as recent as three years ago that his production began to be recognised. He had releases on Marcus Intalex's Revolv:R, both d&b and dubstep-- fitting since Marcus Intalex released one of the first deep house inspired dubstep-esque singles "Taking Over Me" as far back as 2000. But while Martyn bought into early Wookie material, it wasn't until Kode9's "Sine of the Dub" that Martyn took notice of dubstep. "I heard that record and it fitted right into some of the music I was hunting down at that time such as the reggae/techno from Berlin like Rhythm & Sound, Main Street and Basic Channel," he explains. [Pitchfork]
Martyn released his second LP, Ghost People, last month via FlyLo's Brainfeeder label. The album is full of hollow dubstep beats in the vein of Kode9, who is mentioned above as one of Martyn's influences, and features guest vocals on the first track by Spaceape, who collaborated with Kode9 in 2006 for the pioneering Memories of the Future album, and again earlier this year on the duo's followup, Black Sun. But what really makes Ghost People a memorable listen is the way he works in his house influences. He can come out sounding like a better version of Deadmau5's early material (before he began taking a much frattier direction). The songs layer four-on-the-floor beats with more off-kilter ones and almost always use percussion in the forefront of the song, with a sparse melody in the background. The one exception is the album's especially house-y closing track, "We Are You In The Future," which opens with a catchy bouncing synth line that gets built off for almost 9 minutes, and is by far the longest track on the album. The album track "Viper" is available for download above.

Martyn's only got one North American date coming up and its The FIXED Holiday Bash at Public Assembly on December 16 with Jonas Reinhardt (live), Andrew "The Wiz" Potter, Ulysses, JDH & Dave P, and a back room hosted by Throne of Blood. Tickets for the show are on sale now.

All dates below...

Vito & Stephen
Aeroplane

Aeroplane is now a one-man operation, Vito having amicably parted company with his bandmate Stephen Fasano. Not that we should be alarmed. "There are worse things in life!" says Vito. "Stephen's gonna do music on his own, I'm gonna do music on my own. I'm the studio guy, he was more the DJ so when the music became more important, the more I was alone in the studio. The future of Aeroplane was this album and I wrote it and played every instrument." The two are still on good terms: "He's picking me up tomorrow at the airport. I'm probably going to produce the stuff he writes in the future and I'm not going to have a word to say about it!"
The next edition of long-running dance (and some rock) party FIXED happens tonight (5/26) at Le Poisson Rouge with Belgium's Aeroplane (aka one-man operation Vito De Luca) and FIXED regulars JDH & Dave P. Aeroplane released a mixtape on soundcloud in April with remixes of Adele, Shit Robot, Alex Winston (who Star Slinger also just remixed) and others. Stream the mixtape below. Tickets for tonight's show are still on sale.

JDH & Dave P bring the other Belgian DJ, one who used to be the the other half of Aeroplane, The Magician (aka Stephen Fasano), to FIXED on July 9 at Good Units in the Hudson Hotel. Tickets are on sale. The Magician will also be performing at Camp Bisco during that trip, as will JDH & Dave P.

FIXED also has a party scheduled on Saturday (5/28) at Public Assembly with Parallels. Parallels (featuring ex-Crystal Castles drummer Cameron Findlay) plays the front room with Miho Hatori of Cibo Matto, who just announced a tour. People at Parties and JDH open the show, and Pendu Disco DJs play the back room with Butterclock and You.

The Aereplane mix is below...

Pantha du Prince...
Pantha du Prince

German electronic music maven Pantha du Prince (Hendrick Weber) will be playing his first US shows in three years starting tonight, June 15th, in Washington DC. He visits NYC for a live set at Santos Party House on Thursday, June 17th. Also at that will be Fixed residents JDH and Dave P and Swedish duo Dada Life. Tickets are still on sale.

Pantha's third album and his first on Rough Trade, Black Noise, came out earlier this year. Weber is clearly a well-connected guy - the record features a guest vocal spot by Panda Bear and a bass-guest turn by Tyler Pope of LCD Soundsystem/!!!/Out Hud. The AC crew even remixed one of the album tracks. That's posted above, along with a Four Tet remix of the Noah Lennox song. The album is still streaming at the label's site.

Pantha du Prince's three June US shows will be followed up by a full stateside tour in the fall. In the meantime, Pantha du Prince crisscrosses Europe this summer. The video for "Stick to My Side" (again, that's the Panda Bear one), all tour dates, and the upcoming schedule for Fixed are all below...

Simian Mobile Disco @ Williamsburg Waterfront 2009 (more by Bao Nguyen)
Simian Mobile Disco

Simian Mobile Disco will be DJing at Fixed's March 11th party at (Le) Poisson Rouge. The show will be first of a quarterly (4x a year) residency for the UK duo at Fixed. Tickets for the first date are on sale. The other exact NY show dates are still TBA.

SMD have some other DJ sets planned too - a few in March around the LPR show, and a few in May around Sasquach. Presumably that will also be around the time when their second quarter NYC show happens, possibly at Santos Party House where six more Fixed parties are already scheduled. Full list below.

The video for their song "Cruel intentions," which features Beth Ditto on vocals, is below. It was on their latest record, Temporary Pleasure, which came out in August 2009 on Wichita Recordings. In February, SMD released an EP, Extra Temporary, which "compiles the four tracks from the bonus second CD of Temporary Pleasure, along with the two bonus tracks from the iTunes version of the album." The video, all tour dates, a flyer and the upcoming Fixed schedule are below...

Vitalic

Vitalic, aka French electronic musician Pascal Arbez, is currently on tour across the US - he did California last weekend...

...Soon he took the stage and the crowd really got into it. My concert companion made it her mission to get us to the front. We eventually were no more than a handshake away from Vitalic. The crowd, energy, and sweat were drenching and surrounding me.

Concertgoers were continuously jumping up on the stage, then shooed away by security every few minutes. This pretty much happened for the duration of the show. Vitalic never seemed bothered, only energized by it. Driven by the music, people got on top of the speakers. It was awesome.

I danced myself sober. That is the way to gauge the worth of a show. If you sweat and move and dance so much that the alcohol has no choice but to be exiled from your pores, then your show was awesome.... [Spinning Platters]

...and gets to Chicago tonight (2/23). He'll be playing NYC's Girls & Boys party at Webster Hall on Friday, February 26th. Tickets are on sale.

The tour wraps in Toronto on February 27th. Vitalic put out a new record, Flashmob, in fall 2009. Vidoes from that, a flyer and all tour dates are below...

Electric Zoo (more by Zach Dilgard)
EZ

While from the outside, Electric Zoo (Sept 5-6, 2009) might seem like a 2-day hell, overrun by fake-tanned, heavily hair-gelled masses and their female counterparts, the actual experience (at least for me) was far from it. While my jaw dropped in horror as many of the element described above boarded the ferry to Randall's Island at the 35th Street pier, and I was only further freaked out when the entire boat broke out in a sing-along to "Now That the Love Is Gone" by David Guetta (one of many deejays playing the festival), once I arrived the dread of dealing that all day, subsided.

For starters, the festival grounds were very accommodating size-wise for the number in attendance. When I first arrived around 12:30 on Saturday, there was ample room and even as the day wore on and the grounds filled up, I never felt that I was trudging through a crowd to get where I wanted to go. Along with the size of the venue, the diverse spread of deejays (who were grouped at four different tents/stages vaguely according to similar genre/sound), kept my interaction with club-goers whom I would rarely run into under normal circumstances, to a minimum. In the instances where I was confronted with people straight out of My New Haircut (NSFW!) I couldn't say a bad thing about them. Everyone at the festival seemed to be too happy to be there, and dancing their asses off, to care what was going on around them, or to do anything too outwardly annoying to ruin anyone's time.
