Northside is finally upon us! The festival kicks off today with an opening party at Studio B [tix], featuring performances by Brightblack Morning Light, Mariee Sioux and more. Some of the things you can do with that badge are visit the Black Bubblegum metal show at Europa on Sunday, visit the 1st-ever BrooklynVegan photo show at Music Hall of Williamsburg (from Friday 7pm until the end of Sunday night's Bill Callahan show), and stop by the BrooklynVegan showcase at Music Hall of Williamsburg on Friday night with performances by John Vanderslice, The Tallest Man on Earth, Olof Arnalds, AND..... the mysterious and super-talented Dave Deporis has been added to open the show (set time = 9pm).Advance badges are still available for $45, but only until 5pm today, when the price will go up to $50 (still not too steep for access to over 100 shows, art exhibitions and events). Badges can be purchased through Brown Paper Tickets or at Northside HQ: 60 N 6th St between Wythe and Kent (hours and details here).
Long-time readers know I've always been a fan of Dave's music, despite the fact that he STILL hasn't officially released anything that I know of, and definitely not since 2005 when he was the first artist to play the very first BrooklynVegan live show at Tonic in NYC. Check out an MP3 above.
Stay tuned for more Northside recommendations, coming soon. Dave Deporis videos below...

This Sunday, Oct. 7th, be startled, amazed, awakened, and moved by three wonderful performers--Larkin Grimm, David Deporis, and Bridget St. John, in concert at Joe's Pub. It's a 20th anniversary celebration for my WNYC radio show Spinning On Air. I'll be there hosting, and I hope you'll be there, too!The mysterious David Deporis - in action again. Sounds like a great show. For those of you outside New York, the event will be broadcast live on WNYC-FM 93.9 and wnyc.org
Tickets are $15. You can buy tickets and see LOTS of info about the event and musicians here:
Sunday, Oct. 7th, starting promptly at 7 pm, at Joe's Pub, 425 Lafayette Street, New York City.
While Ruined Music is celebrating it's one year anniversary over at the Delancey tonight (and stuff), BV-contributor Undisputed Wes will be celebrating the three year anniversary of "Cross Polination" - his (Liberated Matter's) weekly, free singer-songwriter-mashup series that happens every Tuesday night at Pianos in NYC. Tonight's performers will be a special mix of past Cross-Pol performers from through the years. That includes musician (and Liberated Matter partner) Jay Mankind, Here Lies PA, Wakey!Wakey!,, Jeff Jacobson, Matt Singer, Derek James, Wynn Walent, and more.
Normally there are just two artists - each plays their own set, and then they get together on stage to "cross pollinate". Tonight will probably be a whole lot of short sets, and even more cross-pollinating. It's always 100% free. More on how it normally works in the interview I did with Wes and Jay back in 2005.
If you can't be there tonight (May 8, 2007), at least partake in this 100%-absolutely-FREE "Cross-Pollination: The Mixtape Vol. 1". By "partake", I mean download the free MP3s (you'll recognize a lot of the names from the performer list above as well).....
"Mixtape Vol. 1 was compiled to celebrate Cross-Pollination, a weekly concert series that brings together some of the most incredibly, and at times, undiscovered raw talent from across the country"...It's especially nice to see Dave Deporis releasing something somewhere. Maybe one day we'll actually get an album out of him. His MySpace still has the same old songs.Download the whole mixtape HERE, or track by track....
