Andrew W.K.'s Super Bowl 2013 halftime show at Santos (more by Dan Bracaglia)

If you live in NYC and want to see Andrew W.K., the question isn't ever really "when will there be a show?" as much as it's "which one should I go to?" with pretty much new Andrew W.K. shows popping up by the minute. He just did a Super Bowl halftime show at Santos and has a slot at upcoming pop punk festival Skate and Surf.

But this upcoming 285 Kent show on March 6 that he just scheduled is looking like one of his cooler appearances in a while. That venue's been hosting some pretty great bills lately, and for this one, Andrew W.K. will be joined by DOM, CIties Aviv, Dickpic (aka the collaborative project of DJ Dog Dick and Pictureplane), and Cool Serbia. That should make for an all-around crazy night and tickets to be part of it are on sale now.

Andrew W.K. will also be at IFC Center on February 28 (323 Avenue of the Americas) for a screening of David Lynch's The Elephant Man. Not sure what he'll be doing, but he'll be there.

We're pleased to welcome Interpol drummer Sam Fogarino in person to present a new collaboration between the band and legendary filmmaker David Lynch, plus a screening of Lynch's Cannes-winner WILD AT HEART. A new animated short created by Lynch to accompany Interpol's song "Lights" from their self-titled fourth album, I TOUCH A RED BUTTON MAN is a hallucinatory black, white and red all over lo-fi extravaganza. Following the screening, Fogarino will discuss the band's work and take questions from the audience.

Dark Night of The Soul, the Danger Mouse & Sparklehorse album with visuals by David Lynch, is currently on display at Morrison Hotel Gallery in NYC in the form of "An exhibit consisting of 50 photographs by David Lynch. Music by Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse."...

"Hand-signed by Lynch, each photograph is $3500 and can be purchased together with its set or separately. A companion book carrying the same name features Lynch's photographs and comes with a blank CD-R. A 48-page limited edition run of 5,000 copies was released in 2009. Lynch's art, along with a 9-minute behind-the-scenes video of the two-day making-of the pictures accompanies the downloadable album via iTunes." [WSJ]

Two major label, Danger Mouse-related, indie rock star collaborative side-like projects are touring this fall, but not together. They both play NYC shows within days of each other.

As previously mentioned, Broken Bells are playing Terminal 5 on October 11th. Tickets are on sale. That date is one of four that James Mercer and Brian Burton will play that month. All dates are listed below..

As previously also mentioned, Gorillaz are playing Madison Square Garden on Ocotober 8th. That show goes on sale August 6th and is part of a larger tour that is now fully announced. All dates below...

Au Revoir Simone have spent the better part of 2009 working on, promoting and touring in support of their second album, Still Light, Still Night, wrapping things up -- for now, at least -- with a Brooklyn show at the Bell House on October 24 (tickets), which is part of the CMJ Music Marathon. The Bell House is also where their new video, "Shadows," was filmed. You can watch it over at the David Lynch Foundation Television website. Lynch has been a fan ever since he and ARS were paired together for that Barnes & Noble Upstairs at the Square event two years ago. He even wrote a nice little blurb for the girls:

"I LOVE AU REVOIR SIMONE ..... THESE GIRLS HAVE WHAT IT TAKES ..... MUSIC JUST FLOWS OUT OF THEM SO NATURALLY - AND IT'S GREAT MUSIC ...... I hope someone has since told David his Caps Lock was on. That Bell House CMJ show also has baroque pop band The Postmarks, and San Francisco's folk-ska ensemble Still Flyin' on the bill.

In November, Au Revoir Simone travel to China for shows in Beijing and Shanghai. Tour dates are at the bottom of this post, as are more pictures from Au Revoir Simone's Bowery show from back in June. Findlay Brown, who is also playing CMJ at the same venue (Bowery), opened that June show.

In between now and ARS's trip to China, ARS member Annie Hart will spend some time with her other band, Uninhabitable Mansions, which also features Robbie and Tyler from Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. Uninhabitable Mansions' debut album, Nature is a Taker, is out now digitally, with the CD version due at the end of October and vinyl in January. Uninhabitable Mansions, which now includes Annie Hart's husband (and former Dirty on Purpose member) Doug Marvin on drums, has two NYC shows coming up: a free show next Wednesday (10/14) at Cake Shop which is part of the MIXER Reading Series, then they'll play the Bell House on October 22 (part of CMJ) with Robbers on High Street, Freelance Whales (who are also on the Bowery Ballroom show Findlay is playing), Pomegrates and others. After that, they're going on a short East Coast tour, ending with a October 30 show at Union Pool. Then the band's on hold until the new year when they expect to launch a more extensive U.S. tour.

And while we're here, Robbie and Chris of Uninhabitable Mansions have another band,Radical Dads, whose new self-titled EP is downloadable for free.

CYHSY front-man Alec Ounsworth meanwhile has been doing his own thing and is appearing at Mercury Lounge during CMJ, as well as at a free BrooklynVegan day party at Pianos that same day (10/22). More details TBA.

thanks for coming to the issue project room fundraiser friday. i hope that if you were there that you liked the show.

as i'd said, it was my first time doing a seated electronic/ambient show. the touring for the upcoming album (barring sporadic dj dates) will be with a full band and multiple vocalists, although i might incorporate some elements of the electronic/ambient show, as it enabled me to perform some songs i'd never been able to perform before (like 'god moving over the face of the waters', and other instrumental songs from the past).

Toby said, "he played for a shade under 2 hours as 300 Brooklynites crammed into 232 4th Street. The minimalist performance space comprised Moby's turntables, headphones, a mac computer and a projector screen. Moby's set featured tracks off his new album as well as an abundance of classics from his back catalog. The set finished with a thumping airing of GO..and so he did."

Moby has another NYC live appearance coming up. He, along with SNL's Simon Rich, will be part of "a live broadcast of radio station 91.1 FM WFMU's '7 Second Delay.' Featuring WFMU's Ken Freedman and Andy Breckman." It takes place at the UCB Theater on May 20th and tickets are on sale.

April 11th will be ISSUE Project Room's 6th anniversary. We're amazed at how much has happened in this period of time. ISSUE started on East 6th street as an impromptu and spontaneous music, experimental cinema and performance venue...quickly gaining attention and expanding from 60 performances a year to over 250. By 2005, ISSUE had to leave the East Village and migrated to an iconic and beautiful silo along the banks of the Gowanus Canal. This unusual and extraordinarily fun location was voted "Best Art Bayou" by the Village Voice and named "New York's Best Kept Secret" by the Whitney Museum.

Producing amazing performances by Rhys Chatham, Anthony Coleman, Marianne Amancher, Elliott Sharp, Jandek and WFMU's own Kenny G, ISSUE Project Room enjoyed its stay at the silo immensely but then had to move once again. This time to its current location at the Old American Can Factory at 232 3rd Street in Brooklyn. This room, the "sanctuary", was formerly a rehearsal studio for a circus troupe. Instead of trapeze artists, we've now got Stephan Moore's 16 channel hemispherical speaker system hanging from the ceiling, enabling us to move sound over and around the heads of the audience.

This past year we found out that we were awarded a rent free, 20 year lease on the elk's club room at the former Board of Education building at 110 Livingston Street. It's a pretty amazing room and an amazing opportunity to build a kind of "Carnegie Hall of the Avant Garde" for the next 20 years. It's up to us to bring it up to code and move in, though...so we'll be fundraising for the time being...getting ready for the future. [ISSUE Project Room via Free Music Archive]

To celebrate (and raise money), the Brooklyn venue has lined up some special benefit performances for the month of April.

One highlight (of many) is Moby's "first-ever live electronic/ambiant performance" on Friday, April 24th. Tickets for the show are on sale now - regular and VIP. The full package includes: "an intimate pre-performance cocktail party with Moby [to] hear advance tracks from his forthcoming album, meet and talk with the artist, and enjoy a sneak-preview of his new music video directed by David Lynch." Not surprisingly, Moby was one of many artists who recently appeared at Radio City Music Hall to help raise money for the David Lynch Foundation. Moby was also a part of the Issue Project Room fundraiser that took place at Santos Party House last year (that Tony Conrad also performed at).

On ISSUE Project Room's actual birthday, April 11th, Pitre, with special guest avant-composer/filmmaker Tony Conrad, will perform original composition ED09 "with a 17-piece string/woodwind ensemble". Tickets are on sale. ISSUE Project Room is where Tony teamed up with Genesis P-Orridge (of the reunited Throbbing Gristle) for two shows earlier this year. Video from one of those shows below.

The IPR schedule also has a Tuesday, April 21st show with producer and SNL music supervisor Hal Willner featuring Sean Lennon, Yuka Honda, Chloe Webb and special guests. Tickets to that are on sale. One of the albums Hal recently produced is the new Marianne Faithfull. Still waiting to hear if he'll be back at Prospect Park this year.

Noveller/Sarah Lipstate (who is playing Cinema 16 at the Bell House on Sunday, April 19th) performs at the ISSUE Project Room on Saturday, April 25th as part of artist-in-residence Duane Pitre's Bowed Harmonic-Guitar Ensemble.

Half a Beatles reunion, or some approximation of it, took place Saturday night at "Change Begins Within," a benefit concert at Radio City Music Hall for the David Lynch Foundation. Paul McCartney was headlining; Ringo Starr was also on the bill, and yes, after letting the anticipation build, the two surviving Beatles did perform together, as they did in 2002 for a memorial after the death of George Harrison...

...As the concert's entire lineup-including Donovan, Sheryl Crow, Eddie Vedder, Moby, Bettye LaVette, Ben Harper and Mike Love (from the Beach Boys)-filled the stage, Mr. Starr took his place at the second drum kit. And Mr. McCartney unveiled a song that could surprise even Beatles fanatics: "Cosmically Conscious," an excerpt of which appeared as a hidden track on his 1993 album "Off the Ground." [NY Times]

The David Lynch Foundation provides funds for students to learn to meditate through TM teaching centers, hospital-sponsored wellness programs, boys and girls clubs, before- and after-school programs, and in private and public schools when invited by the administration. Instruction is voluntary and is provided to a child with the permission of a parent and with no cost to the family, organization, or school. In the past year, the Foundation has provided millions of dollars for thousands of students, teachers, and parents to learn to meditate. The Foundation also provides funds for independent research institutions to assess the effects of the program on creativity, intelligence, brain functioning, academic performance, ADHD and other learning disorders, anxiety, depression, and substance abuse.

Tickets are on sale @11AM for the David Lynch Foundation benefit show at Radio City Music Hall.

Paul McCartney, Donovan, Eddie Vedder, Sheryl Crow, Paul Horn, Moby and more will perform a global benefit concert at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on Saturday, April 4, 2009, in support of the David Lynch Foundation's international initiative to teach one million children the Transcendental Meditation technique--and change the world overnight.

Limited seats: A limited number of excellent seats have been reserved for friends of the David Lynch Foundation.

In related news, Pearl Jam are pumped up to hit the studio, and Paul McCartney and Bon Jovi were in the crowd on opening night of the restored Beacon Theater when Garfunkel took the stage with Paul Simon at the first of Paul's two night run in the venue that Leonard Cohen played last night.
