Dead Milkmen @ Fun Fun Fun Fest 2008 (more by Kyle Dean Reinford)

The NYC Descendents / Suicide Machines show is one day before both bands descend upon the first-ever Riot Fest East at Festival Pier in Philly on 9/24! The killer lineup also includes Dead Milkmen, Naked Raygun, X (playing Los Angeles in full like they'll do two nights in NYC), Hot Water Music, Weston, Samiam, Plow United, The Menzingers (who play Santos on 6/24), Excitebike, Shot Baker, Larry and His Flask, The Holy Mess and more. Tickets for the Philly festival go on sale Friday (6/24) at 10 AM. A Flier and more info below.
Riot Fest East is also one day of the 2nd annual Philly F/M Festival: "A Four Day Event To Promote Music and Film In The City of Brotherly Love To Occur Thursday, Sept 22nd - Sunday, Sept 25th 2011."
The second annual festival will take place over four days, largely in the Fishtown / Northern Liberties neighborhoods of Philadelphia, which in recent years have become a cultural center for music and arts in the city. This year's festival will feature over 15 indoor and outdoor venues with capacities between 100-5,000. Participating venues include: The Festival Pier, Trocadero Theater, TLA, World Café Live and The Ukie Club. The whole initial F/M lineup and Riot Fest too, below...Modeled after successful long-standing events such as SXSW and CMJ, Philly F/M looks to establish itself as the premiere multi-venue music and film festival for the U.S. East Coast entertainment and tourism market. Last year's festival took place in 30 venues with 300 artists and over 60 films from around the world. Philly F/M 2010 attracted 13,000 visitors across all events with little or no "headline" artists. This year the festival will host at least fifteen 'headline-level' artists of all music genres, more than 100 artists total. Attendance projections for the festival is more than 25,000 paid attendees, which will include a core group of at least 5,000 all-access badge holders.

Now with a new record out, The Dead Milkmen returned to Warsaw in Brooklyn Saturday night (4/9). It was their second NYC reunion show at the Polish social club in two years, and still only one of very few they've played total. Their next is in Chicago.
If you couldn't be there, you can always listen to the show over at VisualNoiz.com, and check out video of "Bitchin' Camero" with the full setlist and more pictures from the show, below...

Joe Jack Talcum (aka Joe Genaro of the Dead Milkmen) will play a solo show in NYC on Thursday (4/7) at Cake Shop. Samuel Locke Ward and Toby Goodshank, who recently released a split 7" on Slumber Party Records, and Xaddax are also on the bill. $10 gets you in the door.
Joe and Samuel also both play a show at Connie's in Philly on Friday with 25 Cromwell Street. Who/what/where is 25 Cromwell Street? Well, all we know is that it's "Rodney's Band." Rodney of course, to quote Wikipedia, "is best known as the lead vocalist, keyboardist and co-songwriter of the satirical punk rock band The Dead Milkmen." Lots of Milkmen in the house at Connie's on Friday. All of Joe's upcoming dates are listed below.
All of the Milkmen will be back in NYC on SATURDAY, APRIL 9th when the Dead Milkmen return to headline Warsaw. Tickets are still on sale. Pioneers of Seduction and Party Photographers open the show. Oh, and we also have a pair of tickets you can win. Details below.
Dead Milkmen at Warsaw in 2009 (more by Lori Baily)

In March the reunited band flew down to Austin for a headlining appearance at the SXSW-week MWTX fest. Someone reports...
A packed audience for the MWTX party at the Eastside Drive-In went on and on past sunset. We watched Davila 666 and Thee Oh Sees for the forth time each and loved it, then went over to see Dead Milkmen. The crowd was nuts. More stage divers than one could count, just throwing themselves on the crowd. The Brooklyn show is one of two U.S. dates the Milkmen have coming up. The other is Congress Theater in Chicago on April 30th.Kids were climbing speakers and most of the people in the front were stamped with Dead Milkmen tattoos. We literally saw a beer can fly straight into the air, probably 15 feet -[Miami New Times]

The Dead Milkmen recently dropped their first LP in 16 years, The King In Yellow...
"We began working on new material soon after playing the FunFunFun Festival in Austin, TX in 2008. Basic tracks were recorded in two weekend sessions in November (South Street Soundz) and December (Miner Street Studios) 2010. Returning to Miner Street in February 2011 for mixing with Brian McTear, we were able to put the final touches on the songs and ready the album for mastering and release.Meanwhile you can listen to the record and buy a digital copy at the band's site.Look for The King In Yellow to be available as a CD in a month as well as through iTunes, Amazon, emusic and other outlets."
In related news Xaddax, who are playing Cake Shop with Joe, and who feature Nick Sakes of ex-Dazzling Killmen fame, are also scheduled to play May 7th at Union Pool with Young Widows and My Disco. Xaddax will release their debut cassette via Damage Rituals in August. Stream three songs below, alongside contest details, more dates, and some video....
TV on The Radio at Roots Picnic 2009 (more by Tim Griffin)

Tickets are still available for TV On The Radio's date with Radio City Music Hall on 4/13, and since we last spoke the band announce many more tour dates. They kick things off on 4/8 in Philly and all dates are listed below.
Those heading to Austin this month don't need to wait as long. Spin has announced their annual SXSW party (that Hole played last year) and the lineup includes TV on the Radio, The Kills, OMD, The Vaccines, OFF!, and the Smith Westerns on the main stage, with MNDR, Young the Giant, Dom, Electric Child, and 28 North holding down the indoor stage. Skrillex, Wolfgang Gartner, Designer Drugs, and Anika man the 1's and 2's. It happens 12:30 - 6PM at Stubb's on Friday, 3/18 (about a block away from the TBA BrooklynVegan party happening that day - stay tuned!)
OFF! probably wont be off too much during SXSW. The Keith Morris-led band, in addition to the Spin party, the Pitchfork #OFFLINE party, and an official showcase, are also playing other shows including the just-announced MWTX fest (formerly Mess With Texas)! The free show goes down on 3/19 at The East Side Drive Inn (where Pitchfork's #OFFLINE festival will be the two days prior) and will feature appearances from The Dead Milkmen, Odd Future, !!!, Surfer Blood, The Dodos, Deer Tick, and many others. The full lineup so far is below. (and there's also BrooklynVegan parties this day, but MWTX runs much later, so you can do both!) (stay tuned for more about that).
Off! hits the road with Trash Talk soon after SXSW, and play Santos Party House on 3/26 (tickets are still on sale).
This now makes three shows total for the Dead Milkmen who also have shows coming up in Brooklyn and Chicago.
All TVOTR tour dates, the MWTX lineup (thus far) and the flyer is below.

Dead Milkmen at Warsaw (more by Lori Baily)

The Dead Milkmen finished mixing the songs which will comprise our ninth studio album, our first in almost 16 years. We recorded a batch of songs at the beginning of November and recorded a second batch at the beginning of December. They were mixed in February and will be released in an album tentatively titled "The King in Yellow" for digital download and, possibly, on the compact disc format. We have no plans at this time to release the album on vinyl. -[Joe Jack Talcum]No word on release date of that LP, but Dead Milkmen are back and will play Warsaw in Brooklyn on April 9th and April 30 at The Congress Theater in Chicago. Tickets for both Warsaw and The Congress Theater are on sale.
The reunited Dead Milkmen also played Warsaw in 2009. Their official return happened at Fun Fun Fun Fest in 2008.
Joe Jack Talcum

Dead Milkmen guitarist Joe Jack Talcum sets off today (9/1) on a two week solo tour. The tour visits NYC this Friday, September 4th for a show at Cake Shop with Samuel Locke-Ward vs. Darren Brown and The Bassturd.
On September 2nd, Joe shares a bill with another punk rocker turned solo artist, Kevin Seconds, at Asbury Lanes in Asbury Park, NJ (tix). That show is just one date on Kevin's own tour that he's been on since his band 7 Seconds played a couple of shows with the Bouncing Souls at Webster Hall and The Troc. Kevin plays Union Hall in Brooklyn on September 3rd (tix).
Speaking of The Troc, Joe Talcum will also be playing with the Dead Milkmen this fall for a limited set of shows. They play two nights at Riot Fest in Chicago on October 9th and 10th, and then a special hometown show at The Troc in Philly on October 31st. Tickets for the Halloween gig are on sale now.
Speaking of Riot Fest, 7 Seconds (and some other bands) have been added to the previously announced bill (which already included Dead Milkmen). Full lineup and schedule HERE.
Dead Milkmen played Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin in 2008. 7 Seconds are playing that fest in 2009.

First of all, Riot Fest Chicago is not a celebration commemorating the riots at the 1968 Democratic Convention. There are no cops in attendance (unsympathetic ones anyway), and no one is there to "set the record straight".
In 2005 Mike Petryshyn started Riot Fest... With one eye on the legendary Chicago punk scene and the other on the bands that inspire them, he started building the festival, with an ambitious multiple show/venue format despite his inexperience. He put special emphasis on reuniting influential punk and underground bands who hadn't shared the stage in years and Chicago's rich punk history has always been a huge part of the Riot Fest roster, this year 11 bands from the area are confirmed so far.Year five of Riot Fest in Chicago is systems-go from Oct 7th-12th and with an enviable punk rock lineup of Butthole Surfers, Naked Raygun, Cock Sparrer, Dead Milkmen, Murder City Devils, NOFX, 88 Fingers Louie, Screeching Weasel, Pegboy, Off With Their Heads, and many many more. Full lineup and flyer (with New Bomb Turks not listed) is below.
Besides the obvious awesomeness of Naked Raygun, who played their first reunion gig at Riot Fest in 2006 (and who are playing NYC soon, tickets on sale), and a few key others, one exciting band on the lineup is the UK's Oi! pioneers Cock Sparrer:
Cock Sparrer (initially Cock Sparrow) are a punk rock band formed in 1974 in the East End of London, England. Although they never enjoyed much commercial success, the band is considered one of the most influential streetpunk bands in history, helping pave the way for the late-1970s punk scene and the Oi! subgenre. Their style was influenced by pub rock, glam rock and raw 1960s beat music as delivered by bands like The Small Faces and The Who. Their lyrics mostly dealt with topics related to the daily lives of working class people.Cock Sparrer recently played Chaos in Tejas. Riot Fest and a two night stand at The Great American Music Hall in San Fran are currently the only US dates that the band has lined up for the future (dates below).
Cock Sparrer just released their first album in 10 years, Here We Stand, which washed up on US shores last month via Pirates Press. The 14 track LP was recorded by Pat Collier (The Vibrators) and mixed by Lars Fredriksen (Rancid) and includes "Spirit of '76" which is downloadable above.
Meanwhile, Riot Fest is also spreading it's wings out west to bring Los Angeles it's own taste from November 12-14. Lineups are to be announced, but look for those bands at the participating stages of The Palladium, The Wiltern, Key Club and The Roxy. More details are to come.

DM @ FFFFest in Austin (more by Kyle Dean Reinford)

To quote myself, "the Dead Milkmen played Austin on Saturday [November 8, 2008]. Towards the end of the set Rodney said something like, 'I don't know why we ever stopped doing this shit'. Hopefully that spark leads to more shows in the future."
Tickets are on sale for an April 17th Dead Milkmen show at Warsaw in Brooklyn!

"Killdozer are a three-piece band hailing from Madison, Wisconsin - the dairy state, of all places. Anyone who has ever seen them perform can bear witness to their awesome bombastic aural onslaught. Vocalist/bass player Michael Gerald innocently jerks thunderous pounding rhythms from his instrument, while letting forth a mighty roar perhaps more startling because of his otherwise unassuming stage presence. Flanked by Bill and Dan Hobson, on ear-splitting guitar and bone-jarring drums, Michael conveys vivid impersonations of the Great American Dream gone astray, exaggerating in no small detail the potential for existential adventure in the lifestyles of the everyday man. Not to be confused for some trend-kissing band of posing pseudo-intellectuals, Killdozer offsets their warm visions of reality with songs you may remember from your past, bringing you back to those fond memories of jaded youth." [The New Puritan]Playing almost the same (but a slightly shorter) setlist (Neil Diamond cover included) as they did at Knitting Factory in NYC six days earlier, Killdozer proved, despite their age and new professions, that they can still grind at Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin on November 8th.
Michael Gerald is a lawyer now, and he graduated NYU School of Law in 2001, at least that's what his LA law firm bio says... and is consistent with the NYU Law hat he was wearing when he first came on stage to a relatively small, but excited festival crowd. Is there a demand for Killdozer in 2008? I'm not sure it matters, or that the band would care, but it was kind of sad that the majority of the fest's crowd chose Trail of Dead who were playing at the same time on another stage. I found that out when I walked over to catch the end of Trail of Dead after Killdozer finished their set. Regardless, Killdozer (to quote myself) killed it.
Among other things (like telling the crowd to drink beer), Michael pointed out that they, Killdozer, a reunited band who (according to Wikipedia) were active from 1983-1996, are "old". Maybe that's what guitarist Bill Hobson was trying to disprove when, towards the end of the set, he climbed to the top of the scaffolding, played some guitar up there, climbed back down and then played some more guitar with his back on the stage - it was all part of the awesomeness that was the climatic ending of the set. As Austin Daze points out, "The trio left stage with amplifiers feeding back, and the crowd (including members of the headlining acts) screaming for more."
After the show I talked to drummer Dan (brother of Bill) Hobson who told me that Killdozer are not finished yet, and that they're even, though slowly, working on new material. Austin Daze also talked to the band. Their video interview, more pictures, and the setlist below...

Blessed with perhaps the nicest weather in modern Austin music festival history (even with the early evening dust clouds), the first day of the third annual Fun Fun Fun Fest proceeded nearly hitch-free Saturday in Waterloo Park.As you know, the Dead Milkmen played Austin on Saturday. Towards the end of the set Rodney said something like, "I don't know why we ever stopped doing this shit". Hopefully that spark leads to more shows in the future. In the meantime, Milkman Joe Jack Talcum continues to play solo and even has a NYC show coming up (Dec 26th @ Rehab). All of Joe's dates, more Fun Fest pictures, another Fun Fest video and the Fun Fest setlist, below...Touring acts such as Bishop Allen and the National shared four stages with Austin acts such as Latin psychedelic rockers Brownout! , grindcore band Mammoth Grinder and sometime Austinites And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead .
Far smaller and aimed at a more specific demographic than the Austin City Limits Music Festival, Fun Fun Fun focuses on club-level punk, indie rock, hip-hop and electronic music. Think of it as the bands one might see over a month in the Red River club district packed into one weekend.
The vibe couldn't be more different from ACL Fest in other ways. ACL Fest sells out 65,000 tickets a day every year, packing Zilker Park for three days. Fun Fun Fun producer and Transmission Entertainment partner Graham Williams said he hopes to break 7,000 a day. [Austin360]

Fun Fun Fun Fest (a music festival this weekend in Austin) successfully mixes punk, indie, singer-songwriter, hardcore, dance, hip-hop, metal, comedy, new and old. For instance, after blowing my mind to the thrash metal stylings of Municipal Waste, I immediately ran over to catch the end of Bishop Allen's family friendly indie rock set. I like that. One of the bad things, like most festivals, is how much overlaps. On Saturday I had to completely give up seeing The National, Z-Trip, Neil Hamburger, Yacht, and Hawnay Troof. Tonight (Sunday, November 9th), I'll probably have to miss all of Clipse, Tim & Eric, and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, in favor of seeing Bad Brains. I also have to decide between Bouncing Souls and Minus the Bear.
Highlights from day one (yesterday, Saturday) included Dead Milkmen, Municipal Waste (wall of death), Dead Milkmen, Walter Schreifel's solo set (Rival Schools was good too), Dead Milkmen, Killdozer (killed it), Dead Milkmen, Dan Deacon (camp counselor of the year), Dead Milkmen, and Krumbums (punk is not dead). What I caught of Octopus Project, Trail of Dead and Deerhoof was also great. If I say anymore, I'll be late for Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears and/or Kevin Seconds. For now, here are some more pictures from day one...

Dead Milkmen @ Fun Fun Fun Fest, Austin, TX - Nov 8, 2008

After Schulthise's death, the surviving Dead Milkmen took the stage once again for two consecutive nights in November 2004 at the Trocadero Theatre in Philadelphia. Proceeds were donated to a variety of mental health organizations and to a Serbian monastery that Schulthise supported. Dan Stevens, bass player of Genaro's band the Low Budgets, performed on bass. The band, with new bassist, did in fact play that show at Fun Fun Fun Fest last night (11/8). It was my first time seeing Dead Milkmen. I forgot I knew all the words. Full setlist and more pictures later. In the meantime here's some video....In 2008, the band announced its plans to play the Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin, TX, their first performance since the Schulthise memorial show, with Stevens again on bass. When asked if they were planning a corresponding tour, the band said they were not planning to do so. However, the band played two unannounced concerts in Philadelphia in October, 2008, billed under their pseudonym Les Enfants Du Prague. Both shows, including one at the small bar Johnny Brenda's and another at the all-ages venue the First Unitarian Church, sold out despite their lacking proper billing. [Wikipedia]
