Akron Family

"Indie rock act Akron/Family will release its fourth album in April through Dead Oceans/Secretly Canadian, Billboard.com has learned. The as-yet-untitled set is the follow-up to 2007's "Love Is Simple" and is the first studio recording the group has done as a three piece.

"There were other record labels that we liked, but Dead Oceans/Secretly Canadian/Jagjaguwar was our number one first choice. It was really exciting that they were interested in us," multi-instrumentalist Miles Seaton tells Billboard.com. Akron/Family had previously recorded for Young God."

Akron/Family are still scheduled to play Knitting Factory in NYC on New Years Eve, though the venue still hasn't announced anything official. Deer Tick is also playing that show, and possibly Dirty Projectors and Deerhoof too.

Dirty Projectors released their last album on Dead Oceans, and their next confirmed show is this Thurday in Brooklyn with Dan Deacon and ensemble.

These Are Powers

Speaking of vegetable-oil powered buses, NYC bands getting signed, Secretly Candian-related labels signing bands, and Dead Oceans recording artists...

After witnessing the chaos and energy of a These Are Powers live set, we were immediately enthralled with this band, and after a long courtship and some hot and heavy dating, we are excited to announce the start of a long and fruitful union between These Are Powers and Dead Oceans. First, Dead Oceans will re-release of Taro Tarot and Terrific Seasons in October 2008, followed by an LP of new material in the first part of 2009. The band will support the re-releases with tours of both North America and Europe this fall.

White Hinterland

White Hinterland (aka Casey Dienel), not to be confused with Hinterland from Canada who has a new album out February 19th.), has a new album out on Dead Oceans on March 4th. That's an MP3 from it above. There's more streaming at MySpace, and there's a live show TONIGHT (Feb 8th) at Cake shop with Inlets, and with Angel Deradooran who sometimes plays with Inlets, and who is currently in Dirty Projectors. Then White Hinterland is going on tour with Taken By Trees (aka Victoria Bergsman from the Concretes), and that includes the show February 22nd at Hiro Ballroom which is on sale. All dates below....

EvangelicalsEvangelicals are a pretty good band from Oklahoma that have a pretty good new album called The Evening Descends out on the very awesome Dead Oceans label - the sister label of Jagjaguwar and Secretly Canadian, and the new home of John Darnielle's favorite band Bowerbirds....

First, Dead Oceans will issue an expanded edition of Bowerbirds' "Hymns for a Dark Horse," with a new album further off in the horizon. The Plug Award nominated (best Americana album) "Hymns for a Dark Horse" will receive several bonus tracks, as well as a release on vinyl for the first time.
HeadlightsAs you know, Bowerbirds are playing SXSW and going on tour with Phosphorescent. And as you may or may not know, Evangelicals are playing SXSW and going on tour with Headlights. Headlights have a new album coming out on PolyVinyl on February 19th. The MP3 up there is from that album.

PrideI spent much of this weekend (and this morning) listening to Phosphorescent's excellent new album Pride - out now on Dead Oceans. If I had to describe it, I'd say it fits in nicely with its label-mate Dirty Projectors, but is more like (a lot like) Will Oldham (aka Bonnie Prince Billy) with a bit of Neil Young and Sufjan Stevens thrown into the mix. (read Pitchfork's review for a more thorough analysis).

Then I got excited today when I remembered that Phosphorescent has two NYC shows scheduled for this week - Silent Barn on Friday (November 9th) & Cake Shop on Saturday (the old dates had that order reversed in case you're confused like I just was). Bodies of Water also play both shows.

Bodies of Water
Bodies of Water

Bodies of Water are a quartet from LA creating 60's Pop-folk numbers, complete with four-part harmonies and buckets of choral chanting. Their new album Ears Will Pop & Eyes Will Blink was self-released through the band's own Thousand Tongues label, and has been getting good reviews all over the place. [Covert Curiosity]
Then coincidentally Dead Oceans asked me if I'd like to do a giveaway for these shows today, and I said "yes, that's perfect thanks". Contest details, and updated tour dates, below....
