NY Mag

Grizzly Bear are on the cover of the new issue of NY Magazine, which makes two weeks in a row that Brooklyn was prominently featured.

Despite making it into Billboard's Top 10 with their new album, Shields, the band still aren't making a lot of money.

Check out pictures from the show they just played in Chicago with Lower Dens.

And speaking of Brooklyn, get ready for Brooklyn Bowl Las Vegas.

"The Artwork of Robert Pollard & Tobin Sprout" is opening in Brooklyn soon. Meanwhile check out our recent Guided by Voices pictures from both Austin and the Deluna Fest in Florida.

Crystal Castles and HEALTH play Roseland on Wednesday (10/3). We're giving away tickets here and on our Facebook too.

Also on Wednesday, M83 plays Hammerstein Ballroom and we're giving away tickets to that on Facebook too. Tickets are also still on sale.

Another Facebook contest: win tickets to see Raveonettes and Melody's Echo Chamber at Webster Hall on Friday (10/5).

The Compact Disc turns 30 years old today. The first CD pressed in America was Bruce Springsteen's Born in the USA (though Billy Joe's 52nd Street came out in Japan before that). What was the first CD you bought?

Speaking of Bruce Springsteen, Kenny's Castaways, where he used to play is hosting their final show tonight.

Producer and TV On the Radio member Dave Sitek has launched Federal Prism, "a new record label where Sitek will personally record, mix, produce, and release a series of limited edition 12-inch vinyl picture discs with a uniquely curator-driven perspective. The vinyl will be limited to 500 numbered copies each with a jacket personally hand silkscreened by Sitek."

Federal Prism's first release is "Destroyer" by Telepathe. "The b-side of the vinyl will feature a remix by Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor with Alessandro Cortini and Atticus Ross. Sitek adds, "I told Trent I was starting my own label and would love to have him remix something on the first release. I sent him the session and before he actually said 'YES', he sent back this mighty dark space that he, Alessandro and Atticus had built for me! I was shocked and am certain I will have to keep ripping them off for years!"" It's on sale now.

Speaking of Trent Reznor, he says his his band How To Destroy Angels, have "formally partnered with Columbia Records for our next series of releases. The first of these will be available in November and it's called An Omen EP."

Scary: Ryan Adams revealed via Twitter: "Recording a track with my new pal @deadmau5 today. Sounds like BladeRunner starring Don Henley."

More scary: As if it wasn't bad enough that Bruno Mars has been announced as the host of the 10/20 episode of SNL, they're letting him be the musical performer for that episode too!

But here's some good news: Now That's What I Call Music 83 will reportedly be the last in the series.

Eddie Vedder & Beth Ditto @ Rock Werchter 2012 - 6/29/2012
Rock Wechter Day 2 - 6/29/2012
Rock Wechter Day 2 - 6/29/2012

"Rock Werchter is a Belgian annual music festival held in the village of Werchter, near Leuven, since 1973. It is one of the five biggest annual rock music festivals in Europe (the other four being Exit, Sziget Festival, the Glastonbury Festival and Roskilde Festival). The 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2007 festivals received the Arthur award for best festival in the world at the International Live Music Conference (ILMC). It can host 85,000 guests daily, of which 67,000 combine all four days, to add up to a total maximum of 139,000 different attendees." [Wikipedia]
You saw pictures from day one. Here we go with day two..

Day two of Belgium festival Rock Werchter kicked off for me with the still-reunited, classic California punk band X playing on the main stage. I stayed for their entire, great set which means I missed Belgium band School is Cool who were playing on the other side of the park. Judging by the bubbles seen on several attendees leaving that stage though, it looked like missed a fun time. Other bands on the second day, of this festival that featured so many big names, included Pearl Jam, Lana Del Rey, Jack White, Deadmau5, The Gossip, Beirut and many others

I couldn't make it to every band on all three stages each day, obviously, but I at least have a good excuse for missing Mastodon: I was getting a behind-the-scenes tour of the fest (many thanks to FIAF and Rock Werchter for the hospitality - and WAFFLES!). They took me behind the fences and gateways, to get a glimpse all that goes on to keep things moving. The scale and logistics were pretty mind-expanding. Some bullets:

  • Rock Werchter goes for 4 days at the end on June, but initial setup begins in early May.
  • More than 8000 are directly employed by the festival, with thousands more as subcontractors.
  • More than 25% of the staff are directly engaged in security and safety of the venue and audience.
  • Most staff are sourced locally to ensure direct local benefits from the festival.
  • Rock Werchter is practically a small town, with everything but a school system on site (medical services, residences, offices, supply depots, repair stations, food services (including storage and preparation), and even on site garbage sorting and recycling.
  • Thousands of large steel road plates are used throughout the facilities to protect the ground from vehicle traffic, and thousands of square meters of field and audience areas are also similarly protected using plastic and wood flooring.
There's a lot more to go on about, but you get the idea. The scale of bringing a large show like this to life is immense... and Rock Werchter seems to do it with ease.

No pictures from backstage, but more from who was playing on the stages, along with Pearl Jam's setlist, below...

going HARD in NYC (more by Zachary Alex Stern)
HARD

NY Times reports:

Big money is flowing into electronic dance music. In the latest example of corporate interest in this once-ignored market, Live Nation Entertainment on Tuesday acquired Hard Events, a Los Angeles company that has put on popular festivals and concerts across North America.

Yet such investments are fueling fears that a bubble is taking hold in the world of electronic dance music, or E.D.M., jeopardizing the creative and commercial health of the music. The issue has been intensely debated inside the music business, and recently some of the genre's stars have sounded alarms as well.

"E.D.M. has turned into a massively marketed cruise ship, and it's sinking fast," the D.J. and producer Deadmau5 wrote on his Tumblr page on Tuesday. "All I'm trying to do is put on my life jacket and swim as far away from this shipwreck as fast as I can."

Deadmau5 also recently posted a note on his Tumblr saying "we all hit play", and maybe his fear of sinking cruise ships is why he is not on the lineup of this year's Holy Ship, which by the way is a highly successful venture (that sold out before the lineup was even announced) co-promoted by Bowery Presents AND HARD EVENTS (and that's just one of many events Bowery Presents does with Hard who are now owned by Bowery's biggest NYC competitor Live Nation).

Deadmau5

Due to reactions to something EDM DJ-producer, megastar Deadmau5 said in the new Rolling Stone (that he is on the cover of), Deadmau5 posted the following clarification to his Tumber:

we all hit play.

its no secret. when it comes to "live" performance of EDM... that's about the most it seems you can do anyway. It's not about performance art, its not about talent either (really its not) In fact, let me do you and the rest of the EDM world button pushers who fuckin hate me for telling you how it is, a favor and let you all know how it is.

I think given about 1 hour of instruction, anyone with minimal knowledge of ableton and music tech in general could DO what im doing at a deadmau5 concert. Just like i think ANY DJ in the WORLD who can match a beat can do what "ANYONE else" (not going to mention any names) is doing on their EDM stages too. have a look, then let me explain:

Madonna has added a Madison Square Garden show to her tour that already included two shows at Yankee Stadium. Tickets for the November 12th show are on pre-sale now (password: Madge). General sale begins 3/30 at 10am.

In related news, Madonna was just down at Ultra Music Festival where she asked a giant crowd how many of them have "seen Molly". She has since denied it was a drug reference, though as Deadmau5 pointed out after hearing it, it obviously was (even if she didn't realize it). Watch in the first minute of the video, below...

Dead Milkmen @ Fun Fun Fun Fest 2008 (more by Kyle Dean Reinford)
Dead Milkmen

The NYC Descendents / Suicide Machines show is one day before both bands descend upon the first-ever Riot Fest East at Festival Pier in Philly on 9/24! The killer lineup also includes Dead Milkmen, Naked Raygun, X (playing Los Angeles in full like they'll do two nights in NYC), Hot Water Music, Weston, Samiam, Plow United, The Menzingers (who play Santos on 6/24), Excitebike, Shot Baker, Larry and His Flask, The Holy Mess and more. Tickets for the Philly festival go on sale Friday (6/24) at 10 AM. A Flier and more info below.

Riot Fest East is also one day of the 2nd annual Philly F/M Festival: "A Four Day Event To Promote Music and Film In The City of Brotherly Love To Occur Thursday, Sept 22nd - Sunday, Sept 25th 2011."

The second annual festival will take place over four days, largely in the Fishtown / Northern Liberties neighborhoods of Philadelphia, which in recent years have become a cultural center for music and arts in the city. This year's festival will feature over 15 indoor and outdoor venues with capacities between 100-5,000. Participating venues include: The Festival Pier, Trocadero Theater, TLA, World CafƩ Live and The Ukie Club.

Modeled after successful long-standing events such as SXSW and CMJ, Philly F/M looks to establish itself as the premiere multi-venue music and film festival for the U.S. East Coast entertainment and tourism market. Last year's festival took place in 30 venues with 300 artists and over 60 films from around the world. Philly F/M 2010 attracted 13,000 visitors across all events with little or no "headline" artists. This year the festival will host at least fifteen 'headline-level' artists of all music genres, more than 100 artists total. Attendance projections for the festival is more than 25,000 paid attendees, which will include a core group of at least 5,000 all-access badge holders.

The whole initial F/M lineup and Riot Fest too, below...

Lollapalooza last year (more by Josh Darr)
Lollaplaooza

Lollapalooza celebrates its 20th anniversary this year with some huge names on its just-announced lineup. See it in full below.

The festival has obviously changed over the years. What started out as a farewell tour for Jane's Addiction with a 'touring festival' lineup that included the Rollins Band, Nine Inch Nails, Butthole Surfers, and Souxsie & The Banshees, has turned into a one-weekend Chicago festival that Lady Gaga co-headlined last year. As leaked a while ago, Foo Fighters, Muse and Eminem all play this year, as will Coldplay, Cee Lo Green, and My Morning Jacket along with the reunited Cars and the continuing-to-be-reunited Big Audio Dynamite and Death From Above 1979, and a bunch of other bands which may or may not be worth the ticket price depending on how you feel about the headliners and generally seeing bands in big, hot, outdoor crowded parks (Lollapalooza happens in Chicago's Grant Park from August 5th - 7th).

Full 2011 Lineup and a couple of videos (one from 1991, one from 2010), below...

hipsters & Die Antwoord in the Village Halloween Parade
Halloween 2010
Halloween 2010

"President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama opened up the White House doors to the local children and military families to the North Portico of the White House [on Halloween]. Always willing to open the doors to the White House the first family had some trick or treaters getting their candy game on track.

Michelle Obama didn't dress up this year, last year she went as a p*ssy cat, this year she kept it simple and rocked an orange sweater with black trousers. The President was on hand taking in all the festivities cheering on the little trick or treaters and hugging it out with Abraham Lincoln." [Peace FM]

Today, election day, Obama is busy supporting candidates. Go out and vote, even you undead hipsters! (The Rent is Too Damn High!)

Back to Sunday: you already saw ONE, TWO, THREE sets of NYC Halloween Parade pictures. A fourth set continues, ending with a grand finale video, below...

Die Antwoord @ MHOW - July 25, 2010
Die Antwoord

Last time Die Antwoord came to town was in July. They opened for MIA at one big show (HARD FEST), and headlined one of their own (MHOW). When I heard that they just added a last minute October 29th show at Gramercy Theatre in NYC (ON SALE NOW), I assumed they were doing the same since I knew they were scheduled to open one of Deadmau5's three shows at Roseland Ballroom this week, BUT it's actually a venue change. Die Antwoord are no longer opening at Roseland "due to production needs". That's good news for non-Deadmau5 fans since now Die Antwoord's one and only show is as a headliner. They are also the only band playing Gramercy Theatre Friday night (no opener of their own)

Want to go (it's this Friday!)? I have THREE PAIRS of tickets to giveaway. Details on how to win them at the bottom of this post.

What are the pictures in this post? They are an unpublshed set from the Music Hall show that I've been saving for a special occasion like this, and you can see the rest of them, along with video from their recent appearance on Kimmel, their new NSFW video for "Evil Boy", and all dates, below...

Austin City Limits

Night fell down on Austin Town and it figured it'd be a busy night. And with The xx and Temper Trap setting the table for LCD Soundsystem, Gogol Bordello, Monsters of Folk, Deadmau5, Matt & Kim, MIA and Muse, Saturday did indeed set it self up to be remembered as ACL 2010's strongest.

Except for the part where MIA screwed things up during her set...

...M.I.A.'s set saw plenty of anticipation on the west end of the fairgrounds, but little payoff: The first song saw didn't even see Mathangi "Maya" Arulpragasam on stage, and, though she came out for the second, that first song worked as a fitting metaphor for her entire mumbled performance.

Here's the thing about performing in festivals, especially on a main stage: Very few people actually see the performers; they rely on the accompanying video screens to share the visual side of the performance. But rather than the performer (or any of her five packing dancers or DJ) , M.I.A.'s screen showed illustrations. M.I.A., meanwhile, spent minimal time in her set's early going on stage, instead opting to interact o the grass in front of her closest fans. An admirable offering, perhaps, but it left the rest of her crowd in the dark, straining their necks to see her dancers or maybe just the neon "Maya" sign that served as her backdrop.

Her vocals weren't helping matters, either. They were already mixed too low, and Maya, for the most part, mumbled her way through the proceedings. Audiences thinned out--only to be pulled back in once the video screens finally--mercifully--showed the performer stalking the stage, and performing her biggest hit, "Paper Planes." [Dallas Observer]

Friday pictures HERE. Lucero HERE. The xx HERE. Mayer Hawthorne HERE, and the rest of the Saturday (10/9) pictures continue, with some setlists, below...

Deadmau5 & missing piece of ceiling @ Wellmont Theatre (via Baristanet)
Deadmau5

Wellmont Theatre is temporarily closed -- and its scheduled show of Interpol Wednesday night [is definitely] canceled -- after a piece of the ceiling fell from the upper balcony during the Deadmau5 last week.

Louis Litvin, a Wellmont partner, confirmed that Robert McLoughlin of the Montclair buildings department had closed the Wellmont following the incident. Litvin added that one concertgoer was taken from the theater in an ambulance, but that the injury appeared to be minor and the victim was able to walk after being struck.

Litvin said that an engineering team with thermal imaging equipment is currently inspecting the entire building, ceiling and walls, and that management will do "whatever we need to do to protect the public."

"Once we do that and Bob McLoughlin is comfortable, the show will go on," Litvin said. The Wellmont hopes that all the repairs are done in time for the Lyle Lovett concert scheduled for August 15." [Baristanet]

Coincedentally, three days after Deadmau5 played Wellmont...
...while performing onstage at the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C., electronic music performer DEADMAU5 (pronounced "dead mouse") collapsed, suffering from exhaustion. Medics at the venue took him directly to hospital where he is now under supervision.

DEADMAU5 is sad to inform his fans that on the strict advice of the doctors, he now has no choice but to cancel the next nine shows of his summer tour schedule to allow for his recovery. The dates affected are listed below. Meanwhile, his North American dates for October which include appearances at Austin City Limits, the Treasure Island Music Festival, Voodoo Music Festival and three nights at Roseland Ballroom in New York City are still on course.

And as it says above, Wednesday night's Interpol show is cancelled. Poor Interpol. First Bono. Now the ceiling. Stay tuned for refund/rescheduling info.

Video of Deadmau5 collapsing, with the cancelled dates, below...

Kings of Convenience @ Bowery Ballroom - Sept 10 (more by Fresh Bread)
Kings of Convenience

While my favorite show from last week was definitely Kings of Convenience at Bowery Ballroom, Tonight We Ride at Santos (which I headed to immediately afterward) was quite good too. I caught most of Human Life's set which was very upbeat and energetic, but the vocals reminded me of radio "club hits" a bit too much. After set-up and a brief transitional dj set in between, the Glass went on around 12:30. The duo of DJ Wool and Dominique Keegan opened their set with one of their new songs "Wanna Be Dancin' " which was a little on the quiet side. Things picked up by the next track which was "Come Alive" and only got better with each song. Superhero (which is the Glass' next single, due out next month) was amazing and really stood out. The Glass followed with some earlier tracks, "Won't Bother Me" and "Mad At You", rounding out a great set of both new and classic material.
