CMJ is less than a month away and the fest have just released the schedule, which you can peruse by time or venue. There's also a free mobile app that can be downloaded via iTunes or Google Play. A few new additions to the 2015 lineup have been announced. Empress Of, who just played Music Hall of Williamsburg and Pop Montreal, has been added to the Glass Animals show at Terminal 5 on October 15 (tickets). Other newly-added artists include Jessica Lee Mayfield, Kaitlyn, LACED, Oberhofer, PC Worship, Wet, and the sold-out Dungen/Quilt show at Baby's (which we figured was a CMJ show already). CMJ is selling showpasses ($149) again this year, which is like a badge but you don't have access to the industry side of the festival. Like badges, entry into official shows is based on capacity.
Speaking of Baby's, they'll be serving late night breakfast during CMJ from Tuesday (10/13) through Saturday (10/17). Details are still TBA. BrooklynVegan will be spending a lot of time at Baby's during CMJ with an official showcase on Wednesday and free day parties on Friday and Saturday.
Rough Trade, meanwhile, has been designated as the "official Brooklyn hang spot" for CMJ and you can get 10% off select merch with your badge.
Avey Tare at Pitchfork Fest 2014 (more by James Richards IV)
While Panda Bear will be busy touring this year, the other members of Animal Collective will go on another DJ tour. The new tour brings them back to Brooklyn Bowl on September 12, October 3 and November 14, the same venue their last DJ tour hit this past June. Tickets for those shows go on sale Friday (8/1) at 10 AM. Most dates, including the 10/3 and 11/14 shows, will have Geologist, Deakin and Avey Tare. Avey won't be at the 9/12 date.

Deakin w/ Animal Collective at Prospect Par in 2011 (more by VIncent Cornelli)
Earlier this week, we mentioned that fans were complaining that Animal Collective member Deakin (aka Josh Dibb) never got any of the rewards they were promised by donating to his Kickstarter campaign in 2009. He's since apologetically spoke to Pitchfork about the issue:
"I feel sad, but I've set up a situation where that could be the perception and I understand that", he said. "There are a couple things that are being misconceived."He also mentioned that he sent an update to his Kickstarter donors in August, but that he wasn't sure who actually received the message. The message reads:
The primary misunderstanding, Dibb told me, is the belief that he received any of the $26,000. In reality, all of that money has gone directly to TEMEDT, he says. "I think the [Kickstarter] was up for a day or two before I realized that I felt incredibly uncomfortable about the idea of asking people to fund a trip for me to go to Africa... that's why the project turned into a charity thing."
Still, the question remains as to why Dibb failed to follow through on the merchandise promised to donors. Why not just throw together some photos and notes and send them out? The answer can be interpreted as unsatisfyingly simple or as logical and justifiable.
"The gifts were supposed to be based around the music that I had been writing at that time, and when I came back, I personally felt really dissatisfied with it," he explained, and spoke of the struggles he's experienced in recording his first solo record and sticking to his self-imposed deadlines. "For me, as an artist-- whether or not people can be sympathetic to this or not-- it's just been a much slower process to do things on my own than with the band."
What Dibb seems especially apologetic about is his failure to provide donors with regular updates about the project, and to ensure that all the donors have received his messages. "I haven't been the best at updating people in the last two years," he said.
I am writing to you once again to thank you for the tremendous support that you all gave back in December of 2009. I am writing you now to deeply apologize for the amount of time it has taken to come back to you with the rewards of your support. I have heard from a number of you expressing deep disappointment in the way that I have handled this project...Animal Collective will be in NYC soon for their Williamsburg Park show (10/5) with Micachu & the Shapes.
I also want to be clear so that all of you know that none of the money you donated was used for my trip. Nor is it being used to fund the materials that you will all be receiving (yes, you will!). All of these things are things that I have paid for myself or will be paying for myself. All of the money that you donated is being used by TEMEDT to continue their work to change the social dynamic in Mali...
...The crux of what has held this up is to record the songs that I was working on around that time in a way that I really felt good about. I am sure it seems inexplicable to some of you that that has taken nearly three years. On a personal level I have been coming to terms with my own creative process and some of that has been to accept that things take a long time to work through me.
So despite the fact that I know that I intend now and have always intended to turn this all into something that you all would be psyched about, I know that I have not been good about keeping you up to date and feeling included in the process which you all have the right to feel. I promise that for the rest of year my only two priorities will be to finish this and to be on tour with Animal Collective. I will keep you updated monthly on what is going on. Lastly I would like to speak to all of you directly if that is something that you would like...

In 2009, Josh Dibb, who performs in the experimental noise-pop band Animal Collective as Deakin, set up a Kickstarter campaign to fund a trip to Mali. He'd been invited to perform at the famous Festival au Désert and wanted to simultaneously work with Malian anti-human-trafficking groups. He promised fans photos, field recordings or a book if they donated, and he raised more than $25,000.Animal Collective recently put out a new album and are touring their way to Williamsburg Park.
If one looks at the top comments on his Kickstarter campaign site today, however, it's full of fans complaining that they have never received anything for their money. "I backed this as a gift to my boyfriend... good thing we're still dating since 2009!" one wrote. [LA Times]

Animal Collective, Deakin included, played Celebrate Brooklyn in Prospect Park last night (7/12) with Black Dice and Beta & Hatch (DJ). Looking over a few recent setlists could tip you off that AnCo have been filling the majority of their sets with new songs, and the Prospect Park show was no exception.
Save for "Did You See the Words," "Summertime Clothes," "Brothersport," and "Taste," every track the guys played has yet to be released. This was to the disappointment of some. Village Voice overheard a young woman say, "I thought those guys sang 'My Girls'?" and Vaughn Schoonmaker writes, "What is this song?" I heard mumbled from several fans in their late teens/early 20s. "When are they going to play [insert any one of their earlier song titles here]?" However, many others thought the set was incredible, us and the many clapping and cheering on the top of their lungs included. Yes, they should probably get over themselves and play more hits for those willing to spend $40 a ticket to see them play, but what they did play still sounded great and I guess that makes them pretty punk for not giving a shit (and consistent since it seems to be the same story after every one of their shows).
I wouldn't be surprised if the end result of these new songs is similar to the mixed reactions to Panda Bear's new songs at P4K Fest 2010, which are now on the beloved Tomboy LP. Though unlike the new Panda Bear LP, what we heard in Prospect Park last night was primarly fronted by the voice of Avey Tare.
Speaking of Animal Collective not giving a shit what people think, Black Dice opened for them again. I missed their opening set, but as tweeted, "Twitter makes you think nobody likes Black Dice but they just got huge cheers when Animal Collective thanked them before encore start." What did you think?

"Panda Bear is the project of Animal Collective member Noah Lennox. Tomboy, his long-awaited fourth album as Panda Bear, and follow-up to Person Pitch, is now complete and will be released on his own label, Paw Tracks on April 19, 2011.It was back in September that we learned we definitely wouldn't be seeing Panda Bear's album in 2010, or maybe even anytime soon, so this is good news.
Over the past six months or so, Panda Bear has released a series of vinyl singles on different labels, including Domino, Paw Tracks, and Fat Cat, with the final single forthcoming on Kompakt. The Tomboy album will be a compilation of these songs, along with new ones that have not been released. Additionally, all the songs have been added to and newly mixed with help from Sonic Boom to give the album a wonderfully rich and warm sound. stay tuned for more details." [PRESS RELEASE]

NY MAGAZINE: What was 2010's cultural highlight for you?Oliver Platt is probably happy that, according to Pitchfork, Deakin is back in Animal Collective (though as animalcollective.org points out, he arguably never left). He's also probably looking forward to Deakin's solo debut, coming in 2011 via Paw Tracks. Look for Oliver in the audience at the New Museum tonight (12/10). Tickets are still available.
Oliver Platt: Panda Bear's "Slow Motion" [B-side to July's 7" single "Tomboy"]. I'm a huge Animal Collective fan, and frankly, if Animal Collective had released something this year, it would be my pick. [2009 EP] Fall Be Kind was one of the highlights of last year. They locate so much soul in electronic music. But I do think that Panda Bear -- Noah Lennox is his real name -- is a freaking musical genius. He sounds like Brian Wilson and he's got this natural gift for harmony. I love Animal Collective, but to me his stuff goes quicker to that place at the back of your neck, where your brain stem starts to buzz. I don't want to sound too druggy here, but it does have that effect. Also, Avey Tare released a solo album this year [Down There] and there was some really amazing stuff on that.
Animal Collective's only upcoming dates are Primavera Sound in Spain in May, and an ATP that they're curating in the UK the same month.

[Omar Souleyman] appeared... with only his principal accompanist, the keyboardist and composer RiOmar Souleymanan Sa'id... Mr. Souleyman paced and emoted, singing rhythmically in Arabic about love and revenge, punctuating the songs with drawn-out "ehyeahhhhh" sounds and then letting Mr. Sa'id's tight improvisations take over. Mr. Souleyman never took off his jacket or sunglasses or spoke any English -- in songs or between them. He barely bent his knees. He was only going to party with us halfway.Omar Souleyman played Music Hall of Williamsburg on 11/2 with support from Deakin (of Animal Collective). Deakin then toured his way to Fun Fun Fun Fest where he played a set at the festival, and at one of the afterparties at the Mohawk. Deakin's tour ended at The Evening Muse in Charlotte, NC last night, but he still has that show coming up at the New Museum with Prince Rama (tickets).
[Souleyman's] beats are universal, East thoroughly merged with West, among other things a cross between choubi, from Iraq, and Antillean rhythms. But beyond solemnly blowing some kisses to the audience, he's not an ingratiating performer, and the remoteness of his body language combined with the passion in his singing registered as a form of spectacular, non-negotiable cool. He seems authentic, which partly explains his growing popularity in the West. But he also seems emotionally unreachable, which may be the rest of the explanation.

"This solo project from Animal Collective's Deakin (or Deacon, or Josh Dibb) was just as psychedelic, but in more of a dub vein, with spacey, ambient guitar over echoing reverberating distorted drum-pad beats. A pair of smoking-hot yoga-body hipster girls were dancing throughout--no idea how they found a beat to lock into, as loose as the rhythm was, but none of the guys nearby were complaining." [Dallas Observer]From some of our posts, you might think metal and punk dominated at Fun Fun Fun Fest, and honestly it kind of was the metal and punk bands who packed the most punch making it harder to enjoy the lighter fare all in one day, but there are many who probably spent all weekend at Waterloo Park and never even ventured over to the Black Stage once, not even to check out the spectacle that is Gwar who were on that the same time as Dirty Projectors on Saturday.
If indie rock/pop/chillwave was all you were looking for, or even just dancing and hip hop, you had more than your share of best new music to keep you occupied from noon to 10pm on the Orange and Blue stages. Sunday alone featured Deerhunter, Toro Y Moi, Washed Out, Deakin, Magic Kids, Best Coast (Wavves played the day before) and Cults, not to mention Yelle, Polvo, P.O.S. and A-Trak. Guggenheim Museum and YouTube, in collaboration with HP and Intel, tonight announced the top 25 videos, selected from 23,358 online video submissions and 91 countries, for YouTube Play. A Biennial of Creative Video. The announcement was made at a special celebratory event at the Guggenheim Museum this evening, "YouTube Play. Live from the Guggenheim," with a corresponding global live stream at YouTube.com/Play.Avey Tare was left out of the jury. Maybe because he's been too busy working on his new album which is released this week. To celebrate, he and some friends will be getting together at Secret Project Robot in Brooklyn tonight (10/25), and everyone is invited. Details below...
On behalf of the jury, Nancy Spector, Deputy Director and Chief Curator, Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, and Jury Chairperson, said, "It was our goal to reach the widest possible audience, inviting individuals from around the world to submit a video for consideration. While our original goal had been to select 20, the jury was so moved by the quality of work submitted that we decided to honor a final list of 25. We believe the end result is 25 of the most unique and innovative video work to be created and distributed online during the past two years."...

If you nerd out on vinyl as much as I do, then you might take a step away from all of this CMJ nonsense to pop in to the WFMU Record & CD Fair at The Metropolitan Pavilion (125 West 18th St in Manhattan) which kicks off on Friday (10/24) at 4PM (for early admission) and lasts through the weekend. In addition to killer records, crucial trades, and melted Mastercards strewn across the fair's 30,000 square feet, the annual WFMU Record Fair will also have video, live broadcasts, and live music with names like Prince Rama, The Hamburglars, Ted Leo, Butts, Fabulous Diamonds, Dan Friel, and others among the performers. Besides the WFMU show, Prince Rama also has SIX other NYC dates, four during CMJ and two that aren't. Their CMJ week will kick off at Cake Shop tomorrow (10/20) as part of the Terrorbird CMJ show with Marnie Stern, Baths, Revolver, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. (who just played Conflict of Interest), Kyle Andrews, Botany, Dark Dark Dark and Kordan. Later that night the Brooklyn Trio will be at Don Pedros for one of the many Impose Magazine parties, this time at Don Pedro's with Woodsman, Lower Dens, Talk Normal, Prince Rama, PC Worship, and Ancient Ocean. Thursday (10/21) will see them at Cake Shop for the previously discussed Carpark / Paw Tracks CMJ Showcase with Deakin, Light Pollution, Dent May, Excepter and others. And finally, on 10/22 Prince Rama will play the night show at Death By Audio with Greatest Hits, Woven Bones, Teen Inc, Excpeter, John Maus, and a DJ set from How To Dress Well.
After CMJ, Prince Rama will join Neon Indian & Apache Beat for a show at Brooklyn Bowl (10/29, tickets), followed by The New Museum on 12/10 where the trio will again accompany Deakin of Animal Collective (tickets).

Deakin @ Glasslands
"Just got back from it. Didn't stick around for the cowboys & indians dance party, though I probably should have. I was faced on mushrooms the whole night and felt like the place was being overrun by 16 year olds. Twice some dumb scantily-clad broads approached me to ask if I'd buy them drinks cos they were only "20". This was very different from the demographic I imagined Prince Rama and Deakin would be playing for.The show described above too place in Massachusetts on Tuesday. The show pictured in this post took place place at Glasslands on Monday (9/13), one night earlier. It was Deakin of Animal Collective's first NYC solo show with an assist from current tour/label mate Prince Rama, and Silk Flowers and Amen Dunes.
Really bummed out about the arrest of Michael from Prince Rama, and the subsequent abridged setlist. But still they sounded really amazing, and Deakin's set was very cool. It's a shame most people there didn't seem to give much of a shit about the live music.
Can't believe I didn't stick around longer. What did I miss? But don't tell me a bunch of half naked 18 year old girls with face paint prancing around, beseeching older men to buy them drinks. Because I was there for that.
P.S. I was the awkward weirdo in the blue hoodie.
The trek continues for Prince Rama/Deakin, who play Montreal tonight and scoot across the west coast until the end of September. After that, Prince Rama will then link up with Light Pollution for another tour that kicks off in Chicago in early October before they both play NYC on 10/21 as part of the Carpark/Paw Tracks CMJ Showcase at Cake Shop. More details on that showcase TBA.
It's unclear why the guy from Prince Rama got arrested, but the above account makes at least three times I heard about it.

Hot off their sets at PS1, Animal Collective's Deakin and Brooklyn's Prince Rama will be going on tour in September. The trip kicks off with a September 13th show at Glasslands with Silk Flowers and Amen Dunes. Tickets are on sale.
I think Glasslands will be Deakin's first non-DJ solo show in NYC. His first-ever solo show took place in Baltimore at the beginning of the year. The Brooklyn show is also a release party for Prince Rama's new LP, Shadow Temple, which comes out on AnCo's Paw Tracks label the day after. A track from it is above. Prince Rama have a few NYC date before that too - their full schedule is below.
Also with a new album is Avey Tare, whose debut solo record, Down There, comes out October 26th on Paw Tracks. Avey deejays at Glasslands on Friday, September 24th on a bill with Crocodiles (who have a new record). RSVP for that.

Blondes & Avey Tare @ PS1 Warm Up on July 31st
Avey Tare and Deakin of Animal Collective were among the DJs at PS1 Warm Up on Saturday, July 31st. Other sets & performances included Blondes, Prince Rama, Babe Rainbow, CFCF and Oneohtrix Point Never (who only performed for 15 minutes because of problems with his equipment).
Another AnCo member, Panda Bear, who played Pitchfork Fest in July, will be performing at the Beach at Governors Island on September 11th. Tickets are still on sale.

Dan Deacon played one of the last shows of Cake Shop's five-year-anniversary month on Thursday, May 27th. Also at the gig were Height, Eternal Summers, Big Troubles and Dustin Wong. A YouTube slideshow of pictures from the show is posted below.
Dan Deacon and his friends at Wham City have posted details on this year's Whartscape Festival in Baltimore on July 22-25. Confirmed acts include Wye Oak, Deakin, Javelin, Lightning Bolt, No Ave, Talk Normal, Zach Hill, Arab on Radar, Xiu Xiu, Yip Yip, Dan Deacon Ensemble and Ponytail (Beach House was intially listed but has since been removed). More bands are TBA. Tickets go on sale at WhamCity.com and Baltimore's True Vine Records on June 15th.
For Arab on Radar, this is yet another date to add to the list of reunion gigs they have scheduled in July, August and September.
Wye Oak are also playing Siren in July.
Deakin (ex-Animal Collective) will hopefully schedule a NYC show one day soon.

"For the Guggenheim's 50th Anniversary, the band Animal Collective has collaborated with artist Danny Perez on a site-specific performance piece that will transform the museum's rotunda into a kinetic, psychedelic environment. Transverse Temporal Gyrus will feature original recorded music composed specifically for the event along with video projections, costumes, and props, rendering the band members and performers into intense, visual abstractions. During the evening, guests are invited to freely explore the space in order to fully immerse themselves in the environment created by Animal Collective and Danny Perez."Chaos and abstraction found its way back to the Guggenheim Thursday (3/4) night. It had nothing to do with the recently finished Kandinsky retrospective though. Instead it was through Transverse Temporal Gyrus, an almost violently meditative sound and visual installation designed by Animal Collective and artist Danny Perez.
The event was part of the ongoing yearlong celebration commemorating the museum's 50th anniversary. While it's impossible to say what museum founder Peggy Guggenheim might think of such an experiment in spectacle, her track record of gracious support for establishment challenging mind-benders like Max Ernst, Paul Klee, René Magritte and Marc Chagall could be a telling hypothesis.
Animal Collective described their musical contribution to the collaboration as an attempt to mimic the cacophonous yet often unrecognized communication present in both the jungle and thriving urban landscapes. It turned out to be an accurate representation, even through the diluted prism of psychedelia that washed over the towering rotunda for the whole event.
Samples created and collected by the band alternately chirped and blared through the 36 speakers set up along the ascending spiral path, determined at random by a complex (at least complex-looking on a audio engineer monitored screen) computer algorithm. For three hours monastic chants, saw-tooth metallic grinding, and even snippets of recognizable melodic elements from the band's recorded work, among many other sounds, repeated and bled into each other as Geologist, Avey Tare, and Deakin (Panda Bear wasn't there) stood as stylized monstrosities surrounded by black lit, stone-like sculptures and metamorphosing crystal balls. For many attendees, it was hit or miss.
The always challenging and ever-divisive band managed to confound plenty of their fans during the event, but to be fair, a large amount had probably never witnessed a sound installation before. And even as far as sound installations go, it was at times underwhelming. It was perhaps better served as less of a revelatory art piece and more of a completely unique and relaxing way to view and experience one of the most beautiful indoor spaces in all of New York City. Watching saturated colors shifting in tones illuminate the high glass ceiling of the Guggenheim was easily hypnotic.
But as the initially strange noises became more familiar as they reoccurred throughout the night, the mood of the crowd grew more frenetic, as if to connote that more we are able to understand each other, the more confusing our world becomes.
And for Animal Collective, the installation at once seemed like a creative side-indulgence and a culmination of a career long objective: to completely remove themselves as individuals from the music they create, sitting back as prominent but ultimately irrelevant performance objects. With that sort of fulfillment of an artistic destination, Peggy Guggenheim would surely approve.

Deacon, or Joshua "Deakin" Dibb of Animal Collective, played his first ever solo show on the first night of the new decade here in Baltimore, Maryland. This show was a precursor to his trip to Africa, where he was invited to play the Festival au Desert in Mali.Taper Charlie Hughes recorded the show and posted the audio on Bmoremusic where you'll also find more pictures from the event.
This was the unveiling of his solo material, and part of an amazing evening at the Ottobar that included Jason Urick, Daniel Higgs, Zomes, and Moss of Aura. Deacon played five new songs, all of which he's decided to exist unnamed for the time being. [Bmore Musically Informed]
