Goat / Deap Vally / Moving Sidewalks at Austin Psych Fest Day 3 - 4/28/13

Sunday was also about giving credence to the forbears of pysch-rock. Roky Erikson put on an energetic show to a loving and enthusiastic audience. The main attraction, and headliners for the fest, were the Moving Sidewalks featuring Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top. Any time one can catch Gibbons, it's worth paying attention, but unfortunately it seemed like some members of his old band hadn't played since the 1960s. Gibbons's familiar growl and deft guitar work did make up for most of it.Austin Psych Fest wrapped up its 2013 festival at its new home of Carson Creek Ranch last Sunday (4/28). The third, and final, day of the fest included sets by Billy Gibbons' pre-ZZ Top band Moving Sidewalks, Swedish psych freakout group Goat, former 13th Floor Elevators frontman Roky Erickson, The Black Angels, Black Angels collaborator/tourmate Rishi Dhir's project Elephant Stone, Clinic, King Khan & BBQ, White Fence, Deap Vally and more....
Sweden's Goat had the unfortunate slot coinciding with the second half of the Black Angels, but neither the crowd or the band seemed to notice. Dressed as gypsy druids, the band played a sort of jam-pysch rock with insane energy. The band wore masks, but the two female leads stole the show, euphorically jumping and singing throughout each song. [Austinist]

Let's just forget (not really) about this hurricane thing for one second, and try to remember that today is also Halloween! What are you going to be? What were you for Hallowmeme? Need instructions on dressing as a Canadian Indie Musician? Are you dressing up your baby? And are you going to one of the limited NYC events still happening? Or will you just save your costume and hopefully wear it to the belated Halloween Parade that might happen next week.
As you can see in the photo above, BV photographer Chris La Putt (not actually him) found his costume and is going to be Instagram for Halloween (actually, he's stranded without phone, internet or power in Jersey City).
Speaking of BV photoraphers, we just found out that we posted a picture of Jezebel writer Jenna Sauers in her Halloween costume in 2009 (and drunkenly ate falafel near her at 4am).
One CT resident got a Halloween-themed surprise when Sandy uncovered a human skeleton under a down tree. They think it was put there hundreds of years ago when the area was a burial ground.
Of course not everyone is having an unhappy holiday. And many are still dressing up, like Miley Cyrus who is doing Nicki Minaj.
Dum Dum Girls dressed up as nuns and brought out the Dum Dum Boys, last night.
LA band Deap Vally who are currently in Europe on tour with the Vaccines, show off their costumes....

Deap Vally @ Public Assembly (by Dominick)

Foxygen @ Public Assemby (by Amanda)

Our Friday not-CMJ day party (10/19) at Public Assembly, our first of two day-long, two-stage shows at the venue over the weekend, had my favorite one-two punch of the entire 2012 CMJ week: Savages followed by METZ both of whose performances we wrote about already (click the links). But I'll add that even though it was a shorter set (that didn't include "Flying to Berlin"_ than when I caught them at Glasslands earlier in the week, Savages were more, relaxed, more electrifying at our show. And METZ bring their insane level of energy (and volume) to every show they do, day or night, and they knocked the crowd for a loop. CMJ in a nutshell right there.
The rest of Friday's line-up was highly diverse: Israeli prog rockers Tiny Fingers; Wisonsin folk duo Blessed Feathers; the retro-fueled shenanigans of the terrific Foxygen; Murals' laid-back dreampop; FIGO and Toys that Kill bringing some punk; Deap Vally bringing riffs and sex appeal; IO Echo's gothy shoegaze pop; MSMR's big pop sounds (a little like an indie Sophie Ellis Bextor?); Doldrums on what was one of their 8000 highly energetic shows that week; Braids' new, electronic direction; and the brainy fake surf of The Intelligence.
Attendees at the show were fueled by complimentary drinks courtesy of Sailor Jerry Rum, complimentary beer courtesy of PBR, and snacked on the free Raw Revolution organic live food bars that were scattered around the venue. Hopefully nobody had a hangover thanks to cans of the Mercy that were given out aplenty. If the PBR and Poggled photographer took your picture, look for it on our Facebook.
We already posted pictures from this party of METZ, Savages, and Sky Ferreira. More from the whole show, below...

Saturday lineup (same time, same place) coming soon...

Meanwhile you'l also find us, or our BV Austin site to be more specific, repping Texas at Rebel (a free and official CMJ party), and at Saint Vitus on Saturday night.

As mentioned in What's Going on Monday, California rawk duo Deap Vally canceled tonight's Maxwell's show (10/15). But there will be no shortage of chances to see them this week, as their CMJ schedule boasts five shows, including the BrooklynVegan day party on Friday (10/19) at Public Assembly. They'll be on early (1:30 PM) and we'll be letting you in on the full schedule real soon.
They'll also play the Fader Fort at Converse Rubber Tracks Studio on 10/17, Bowery Ballroom on 10/18 with MNDR, MS MR, IO Echo, Sky Ferreira, and Gabriel Bruce, Rockwood Music Hall on Friday night (10/19) after our day party with Matthew and The Atlas, Foreign Fields, Matrimony, and KOOL A.D; and finally Cake Shop on Saturday afteroon (10/20) for the Village Voice party with Delicate Steve, Dent May, Heavenly Beat. Vockah Redu and Daytona.
Deap Vally will open for Muse in November on their European tour. CMJ dates and flyers are below.

Deap Vally

The 2012 CMJ Music Marathon is nearing and more and more shows are being announced for it every week. One of those happens on October 18 at Bowery Ballroom and has a pretty stacked lineup of MNDR, MS MR, Deap Vally, IO Echo, Sky Ferreira, and Gabriel Bruce. Tickets for that show go on sale today (9/26) at noon.
The Bowery Ballroom show is one of a few during and surrounding CMJ for LA duo Deap Vally, who we profiled earlier this month.
As mentioned, MS MR also open for Grouplove at Terminal 5 on November 2 (sold out). Their Candy Bar Creep Show EP is out now and you can preview it on tumblr or purchase it on iTunes.
As for MNDR, you can also catch them DJing at The Studio at Webster Hall tonight (9/26) (tickets) and on their tour with Shiny Toy Guns which hits NYC on October 30 at Santos Party House (tickets).
IO Echo released their debut album, Ministry Of Love, earlier this month via IAMSOUND will release their self titled EP on October 16 (the full length has been pushed back to next year) and you can stream their single, "When the Lillies Die," at the bottom of this post.
You also may have noticed that LA singer/actress Sky Ferreira, who has released some singles in the pop world over the last couple years, like 2010's "One" (produced by Bloodshy & Avant who are responsible for Britney Spears' "Toxic" and are 2/3 of Miike Snow), has been getting some internet love for her new single, "Everything Is Embarrassing" (produced by Dev Hynes of Blood Orange and Ariel Rechtstaid, who has worked with Cass McCombs, Glasser, and others). You can stream that track below.
Lists of dates and song streams below.

"Bad. Ass." Those are the only two words you'll see written on LA duo Deap Vally's facebook about page, sitting under a picture of the band's two members (Lindsey Troy and Julie Edwards) in a car with just enough skin covered to stay SFW. Usually I'm pretty skeptical about a band's own description of themselves, but in this case nothing else could sound more accurate. Lindsey and Julie play like the White Stripes if instead of Jack and Meg it was Karen O and Alison Mosshart. And though they're bursting with White Blood Cells and a Fever to Tell, there hasn't really been a band with this much raw power since those albums were released. While Jack White's off playing in an exponentially larger band and Karen O is off hanging with everyone from Santigold to Swans, Deap Vally are in that stage that hasn't been as fashionable in recent years - stripping everything down and rocking the fuck out.
Julie Edwards has sat behind the kit in the comparatively less heavy The Pity Party since 2005 and has also lent her talents to The Raveonettes, before deciding to go all out in Deap Vally. Though the band's edge is relentlessly adolescent, on "Gonna Make My Own Money," when Lindsey Troy howls about how she married a rich man, she sounds seasoned and experienced in the way we've come to expect our blues storytellers. On "Baby I Call Hell" she growls "Baby do you love me like you say you do?" from the pit of her stomach like a young Janis Joplin. On the apocalyptic "End Of The World," she begs, "Come on take a breath now," sounding as if that's an actual option in such a situation, before breaking into Iommi-esque guitar bends and exclaiming, "It's the end of the world!" You can stream those tracks and check out some videos below.
Deap Vally have a few dates scheduled at the moment, and they'll be here for CMJ. But they'll head to the NYC area a bit before that to play Maxwell's on October 15. Tickets for the Maxwell's show are on sale now.
A list of all currently known dates, streams, and videos below.
