Did you go to (le) poisson rouge yet? Damon & Naomi played last night. How is it?
The above paparazzi picture of Thurston @ Starbucks happened on Friday. I wonder if he has a free-coffee-for-life card. Later that night he played Knitting Factory.
It rained on R.E.M. It rained on My Morning Jacket. It rained on Vampire Weekend. It rained on Death Cab For Cutie. It rained on Adam Green's parade. A member of Sigur Ros was in the hospital. Iron Maiden lost their sound.
Knitting Factory is coming to Brooklyn.

The concert ended thirty minutes early as high winds started pulling the rigged lights down, a situation unsafe for band and crew. The last song Death Cab played was "The Sound of Settling." This is a completely average song, BUT something about the juxtaposition of the wind and the swirling purple clouds and the lighting made it seem frenetic and panicked. Immediately after DCFC left the stage, it started pouring big, sloppy raindrops. To some, Kozelek may come across as a recluse, but he's anything but: since the release of Sun Kil Moon's debut--2003's extraordinary Ghosts of the Great Highway--he's scored a film, acted in the movie Shopgirl, and put out a double-disc live album as well as a Sun Kil Moon record consisting of nothing but Modest Mouse songs. [Popmatters]

Ben Gibbard: When I was in my early 20s, I saw people in their 30s or 40s very differently than I do now. There's a level of confusion that is never really quelled as you get older. The rest of that conversation is at the Onion.Mark Kozelek: I hear what you're saying about the confusion of it all. A part of you feels like you haven't grown up as much as you should at this age. I'm really in a strange position, where I'm 41, still don't know how to drive a car, I'm not married, I don't have kids. When I go back to Ohio, that's where it really kicks in. Everyone around there is dealing with their mortgages and their kids and all these things. That's where I really feel the confusion, and I really feel like the odd man out. There, nobody really cares about my record deals or my little bit parts in movies or these little blurbs I get in magazines. Everything's more like, "If you don't have kids, and you don't have religion, and you don't go to church, and you don't drive a car, and you don't own a home, and you're not married, you just don't have shit." [Laughs.]

Death Cab for Cutie were the live wires on this week's album chart, debuting on top with 144,000 units sold for their seventh full-length album, Narrow Stairs. That's a broad step up from the 90,000 that their last album, Plans, opened with in 2005. In retrospect, releasing an eight-and-a-half-minute single ('I Will Possess Your Heart') doesn't seem like such a disastrous move after all, does it? When their touring dates are finished, Sara jokes that their summer will contain "beverages and bikinis," but in truth, they will be hard at work on other projects. "Tegan and I are both writing furiously for the next record," she says. "I have always felt like I was squeezing songs out of me slowly, but lately I've been writing a lot. We recently played a show with Death Cab For Cutie, where we talked with [guitarist/producer] Chris Walla who worked on our last record. We're pretty much signed up to work on our next record with him again." [Spinner]Speaking of Death Cab For Cutie (and Spinner), their new album is out today and streaming at Spinner.
Tegan and Sara played a sold out show at Terminal 5 in NYC last night (May 12, 2008). More tour dates HERE. More pictures from the show below....

Death Cab for Cutie's Narrow Stairs is the marquee music release this week.
Also out this week is the Black Angels' Directions To See A Ghost. The band's performance at its "Psychfest" show was the highlight of SXSW for me, and this album is one of 2008's musical bright spots.
From what I have already heard, I can also strongly recommend Dosh's Wolves and Wishes, Duffy's Rockferry, The Instruments' Dark Smaland, and Vetiver's Thing of the Past. The new Old 97s disc, Blame It on Gravity (I had just about given up on the band after their last couple of albums, but this is a wonderful return to form by Rhett Miller & company).
I'll be paying import prices for the overseas releases of Gemma Hayes' Hollow of Morning and the Delays' Everything's the Rush (the band's Faded Seaside Glamour was one of my favorite albums of 2004).
The only reissue of note this week is Hush's release of Nick Jaina's 2006 album, The 7 Stations.

DOWNLOAD: Feist - Mushaboom (Postal Service Remix) (MP3)

Death Cab For Cutie is coming out with a new album in May 2008. You can watch a trailer for it on their new website.
Also to look foward to in 2008: a collaboration between Death Cab frontman Ben Gibbard and Leslie Feist...
during a recent off day in Louisville, she and her touring band got the itch to roll tape. "We thought, day off? Let's just do something fun," she recalls. "Bowling? A hike? Instead, we rented a studio."For a taste of what Gibbard & Feist sound like together, download the Postal Servce remix of "Mushaboom that is linked on the top of this post - right over that picture of Ben singing with Feist's Broken Social Scene band-mate (and boyfriend) Kevin Drew. That photo was taken by Chona Kasinger at a "Spirit If" show in October - a few weeks before a member of Pavement played with Kevin in NYC..There, "we took turns and played together," she says. Feist "fooled around on some new stuff" and sang a Grizzly Bear song. She also recorded the basic track for a collaboration with Death Cab For Cutie's Ben Gibbard, which will appear on the "Red Hot and Indie" compilation being produced by the National's Aaron and Bryce Dessner. [Billboard]
I present to you two lame videos by confused "artists" - both using lame stereotypes. The first song is supposed to be about "emo bitches", and the second one was.... performed by some....
