Rob Fish of Ressurection, playing Cake Shop in 108 (more by BBG)
108

Ressurection walked the line between metal, noise, and hardcore in the 90s, carving out a distinct path before succumbing to the success of vocalist Rob Fish's (then) new project 108. The band's catalog has been given a once over by the venerable Kurt Ballou for the previously discussed I Am Not: The Discography and the results are astonishing. Stream "Culture" below and "Build" at Deathwish who breathe new life (get it?) into the I Refuse material that first surfaced via New Age Records. Deathwish says "A release date and Pre-ordering information will be announced shortly."

Resurrection is scheduled to play This is Hardcore on August 13th in Philadelphia, but have also added a Brooklyn show at Saint Vitus on 8/14. Details are sketchy at best so far, but lets hope it isn't a 21+ show. UPDATE: maybe the show is actually in New Brunswick instead.

Rob Fish recently played at the East Coast Tsunami as part of 108. Ressurection song and cover art below...

New Lows

New Lows haven't kicked the bucket. In fact, after some lineup changes the Massachusetts band is stronger than ever with their new LP Harvest Of The Carcass out NOW via the venerable Deathwish Inc. Sporting tough cover art courtesy of Converge frontman Jacob Bannon (get a limited edition print), Harvest was recorded by Chris Corry of Mind Eraser at The Paincave and features ten tracks that are as influenced by crusty hardcore (His Hero is Gone, From Ashes Rise, etc) as they are grindy/crusty Euro death metal (Entombed, Bolt Thrower, etc). Check out the fourth track on the LP, "Last of The Rats" available for download above and streaming below, and order a copy... it's pretty impressive.

New Lows will open all three dates on the upcoming Nails/Burning Love/All Pigs Must Die tour that will hit Union Pool on April 1st. Tickets are still available.

Nails were also just confirmed on the lineup of this year's Scion Rock Fest.

Video, tour dates and that song stream is below.

Twilight

Twilight

Surprise! After a few CDs made their way into record stores accidentally (I am told) Twilight, the Blake Judd/Wrest project that now features N. Imperial (Kreig), Aaron Turner (Isis), Stavros Giannopoulos (The Atlas Moth) and Sanford Parker (Minsk) is out NOW on CD via Southern Lord! The record was engineered by Sanford Parker, who also contributed synths, and features eight tracks with Robert Lowe (Lichens) contributing vocals to three of them. No official word on a release date for the LP, but get out and order a copy... I think I may enjoy it more than the new Nachtmystium. Speaking of the new Nachtmystium, Stereogum recently premiered the keyboard heavy "No Funeral" from the forthcoming Addicts: Black Meddle Pt. II. Dig on that above.

Call me obsessed, but the new Black Breath, Heavy Breathing, is on serious rotation lately- much like their previous EP Razors To Oblivion was last year. The new LP has Kurt Ballou's dirty little fingers all over it, bringing their rich early Swedish death metal meets hardcore sound to life, as exhibited in "Children of The Horn" available above. Get Heavy Breathing now via Southern Lord. Black Breath will open the BV/1000 Knives/AEG Live Converge extravaganza at Santos Party House on 5/6 along with Touche Amore and Lewd Acts. Make sure and get their early (their live show is worth it), and get your tickets in advance (it WILL sell out). Seriously brutal and fun stuff... you gotta love a band that screams "reject Christ, spit on the cross" at the top of their lungs. Or am I alone on that one?

Though it only lasts two tracks (but conversely- 35 minutes), the new EP from Altar of Plagues, Tides, is every bit as powerful as White Tomb, one of my favorite LPs of last year. AoP's new Tides EP is currently up for pre-order via Burning World Records (cop it), but until that package arrives, make sure and dig on "Atlantic Lights" from the EP (50% of the record!) , which makes it's world premiere here!

An LP from last year that was just too good to be free was Celeste's Misanthrope(s). With a potent mix of black metal, furious hardcore, and even melody, it was a seriously underrated record that deserved much more attention than it got. Even though Misanthrope(s) is barely in the rear view, the band has released their new LP, Morte Nee(s) for FREE download (get it above). Make sure and order a copy of the LP for yourself via Denovali as well though, it's one to keep for posterity.

Richmond's Inter Arma totally floored me at The Charleston with their furious mix of black metal, southern stoner style and Neurosis-style imperial riffage. Besides being a jawdropping live band, Inter Arma has also put together a pretty memorable record as well in the form of Sundown, out soon on Forcefield Records. Featuring members of another great Richmond band, Bastard Sapling, check out the band when they hit the road in July, but until then, check out Sundown!

A darkness has settled over the land... details on Watain's new album have been revealed! Entitled Lawless Darkness, the effort was recorded at Necromorbus Studio (Deathspell Omega, Funeral Mist, Ondskapt, Nominon, Unanimated et al) in Alvik, Sweden, and is due on June 7 with the below cover art and the tracklisting as listed down below. The release follows their picture disc EP Reaping Death which quickly disappeared, though the CD single is currently available.

That Watain cover, plus news on Blood Revolt (Primordial + Revenge), Loss, Man Is The Bastard, Hail of Bullets, Woe, a new Inquisition LP, and more as Short Wave Warfare continues....

108 at Burning Fight Book Release (photo by Matt Miller)
Rob Fish of 108

New album from a reunited band. Its easy to be skeptical, and before I heard a note of their 2007 reunion LP A New Beat from a Dead Heart, I was. But hardcore greats 108 quickly extinguished the flame of doubt and proved that not only did they still have something to say, they could say it with a fury not dissimilar from their pre-breakup incarnation.

Now 108, the crew will serve up another platter of furious hardcore with their new LP 18.61 laid down "in the analog domain of Alex Garcia Rivera (ex-Give Up The Ghost)" with Kurt Ballou mixing down the proceedings. The record is due on Deathwish and the tracklisting is still to come, but the title track makes it's first appearance here and is downloadable above, along with "Forever Is Destroyed" which recently appeared on the Deathwish Sampler. Stream more at their Deathwish audioplayer, including the supremely discordant/badass "God Talk". The record marks the first appearance of former-and-now-current The Red Chord drummer Mike Justain. (Justain also did time with Trap Them, Unearth, and Backstabbers Inc, among others)

In other news, Rob Fish recently announced his involvement in Eshas a new project featuring Aaron Edge (Iamthethorn, Himsa, etc). "Your Empty Dying Days" (above) is the first song to bubble to the surface with "more to come, whenever the urge hits".

Rob Fish's old project Ressurection will get a deluxe discography treatment via Deathwish. Look for I Am Not: The Discography to appear on the label later this year. Members of Ressurection has gone on to feature members of Lifetime, Deadguy, Floorpunch, The Van Pelt, Paint It Black and many others.

Album art and some live video, including video of 108 performing "18.61" live at Santos last year, is below. For more info on some of the ideas behind 108, check out guitarist Vic Dicara's blog.

From Ashes Rise (photo by Nathan Baker)
FAR

Formed in Nashville in the mid-'90s, From Ashes Rise helped define the gloom-heavy thrash sound attributed to groups like His Hero is Gone, Systral and Tragedy... Representative of a staunchly underground breed of aggressive, basement punk, many heads devoted strictly to aesthetic were shocked at the band's hitching with Jade Tree Records. Drawing on obscure thrash bands from Scandinavia and Japan, as well as Discharge's venerated "D-beat," From Ashes Rise helped carry the aggro torch for Jade Tree. The band split up in Fall 2005 after doing a tour with the legendary UK band the Subhumans.
From Ashes Rise have announced their resurrection after a five year hiatus with a new live show, at Satyricon in Portland, OR on February 21! Here's to hoping that the band will follow-up with a full US tour, or at least NYC. Members of From Ashes Rise have gone on to play in Tragedy, Deathreat, and World Burns To Death among many others.

Tragedy recently played Studio B in Brooklyn with Morne and Blacklisted. Blacklisted are scheduled to play the Deathwish / Chronic Youth day party along with Bane, Maximum Penalty, Cold World, The Banner, Foundation, and Incendiary at Santos Party House on 10/24.

Flyer for the Deathwish/CY show is below.

Javelina @ the Northside BV-BBG Showcase (more by Jason Walker)
Javelina

Alright! I get it. Doomriders rules. Revocation is up there. There's a new Converge and Baroness on the way. But even with all of those great releases, it suprises me that Javelina isn't near some of the top of those lists. The band's filthy debut was a monster and their new one, Beasts Among Sheep, only adds to their considerable reputation. If you are a fan of the last LP, this one is a must have. Dig on "Stepchild" above and preorder the limited edition LP version of Javelina's Beasts Among Sheep via Brutal Panda Records and the CD version via Translation Loss.

Speaking of that Doomriders album, Darkness Come Alive is out NOW via Deathwish Records. Though the party vibe that permeated through Black Thunder is mostly gone, it has been replaced by a propulsive punk rock fury and, at times, a Misfits-era Danzig croon (see "Come Alive")! There are quite a few killer moments on this long-player, but we present to you the most "fuck you" of them all, the galloping "Lions" downloadable above!

In our last round up, we shined a light on into the deepest fathoms of Australia and the truly frightening Portal. The band's claustrophobic and positively frightening new death metal LP, Swarth, relies as much on freak-out atmosphere as it does killer discordant riffery. Swarth is due out on 10/20 via Profound Lore and we have a second taste in the form of "Omenknow" above.
Misery Index have completed four new songs and are looking to enter the studio in early 2010 to record their follow up to Traitors! Stoked.

Iron Age @ Cake Shop (more by Jason Walker)
Iron Age

I still remember that kick ass Cake Shop show with Iron Age, Mind Eraser, and Sex Vid, and walking out of that show wanting more. Thankfully, I can add to those great memories with a PAIR of Iron Age shows in the coming weeks! First up, the rowdy Texans will team up with the great Mother of Mercy (profiled here) for a show at Cake Shop (10/16). The next day (10/17), look for the band to pull a double header with a day show at Generation Records and a night show at The Charleston with Brain Killer, Naam & Descender. Speaking of Mind Eraser, the band will team up with the kick ass Iron Lung for a string of east coast dates which will include Cake Shop on 11/8! Full Iron Age and Iron Lung dates are below.

Black Skies will release the limited edition vinyl from their 2008 EP Hexagon on I'm Better Than Everyone Else Records. The Chapel Hill doom trio is currently on the hunt for drummer #5, but not before blessing us with some seriously killer riffage in the form of "Smoke & Mirrors" above. Preorder Hexagon here.

Power Pellut is also releasing their debut LP via I'm Better than Everyone Else Records. Preorder that here and dig on "Black Betty" from that LP above!

Church of Misery will release a live record culled from their recent set at Roadburn 2009! More details are to come, but look for Burning World to do the honors in November/December of this year. In the meantime, dig on this killer live video from Roadburn 2009!

That video, news on Kowloon Walled City, Boris, Asphyx, Struck By Lightning, Ringworm, Repulsion and more!

That singer from Ceremony got ups, yo!
Ceremony

Did I brush shoulders with death during Converge's set? Nate Newton's swinging bass whizzing inches from my face, Jacob Bannon's foot on my hand as the crowd fought to tear me a part, nor Jacob's swinging microphone straight out of a Roger Daltrey/Who video caused my near collapse. It was a moment of deviant kismet; All of a sudden Jacob Bannon snapped his wrist and whipped the microphone cord causing it to coil around my neck only nanoseconds before a stage diver jumped squarely on top of me. Hanging by the mic cord, my feet were on the floor and my body was at 45 degrees, the crowd around me holding me up from behind. I could feel myself choking until a bouncer rushed over and unwrapped for the cord from my neck... Hung at a Converge show... I guess that one hasn't happened yet (luckily).

The bill for the evening was massive, filled with the Deathwish roster of past (Ceremony) and present (Rise & Fall, Coliseum, Pulling Teeth), save for Genghis Tron, Converge's tour mates from last year's trek with Baroness and The Red Chord. Unlike Justina (who shot the whole show), I arrived towards the end of Ceremony's set, missing Coliseum, Rise & Fall, and Pulling Teeth, unfortunately.

Genghis Tron and coordinated lighting rig played their first show of 2009 directly following Ceremony. They opened with the epic title track to their critically acclaimed LP, Board Up The House. Drum-machine centric bands such as The Austerity Program, Godflesh, and GT have a large hurdle to get over in heavy music; the fact that there isn't a human being smashing the kit behind them in a genre that depends on brutality is definitely a negative in the live setting. That said, Genghis Tron make the best of it, and Mookie is a passionate and energetic frontman. Justina managed to catch my favorite moment of their set on video (below)... a cover of "Bad Penny" by Big Black!

Converge hit the stage right around 12:30 AM, running through material spanning the length of their career including "Locust Reign" from their 1999 split with Agoraphobic Nosebleed, "Heartache", "Hellbound", "Eagles Become Vultures" (video below), "Last Light" and many others.

At one point during the show, a crazed "fan" slapped a bear hug on Jacon Bannon wrestling him from the stage and onto the crowd floor.

When Jacob finally got back on stage he remarked, "I don't even know what happened here. I'm like nervous to keep playing... should we keep playing?"

They did (no encores), finishing the evening with "Concubine" from Jane Doe and a special treat for the metalheads mixed in with the hardcore kids... a cover of "Wolverine Blues" by the mighty Entombed sung by John Petitbone (Himsa, Botch, Undertow). It was their "second time" performing the song. Jacob Bannon took a breather during that one.

I've seen Converge a lot, so I was hoping to hear a lot of new songs, ones I haven't seen them perform in a while, or anything else out of the ordinary. Unfortunately the new material was in limited supply, but the two new ones they did play bore the Converge seal of oddball drum fills, Swedish Death Metal guitar tone, and clear roots in hardcore. The Entombed cover in particular was a highlight for me... well, that and the whole not dying thing.

Converge are scheduled to hit the studio in May to record their new album, according to our recent interview with Jacon Bannon.

Genghis Tron will play Public Assembly on April 12th with Tombs, Black Anvil, and Wetnurse as part of the Show No Mercy series.

More pics & videos (from the whole show, 3/27 in Brooklyn), below...

Coliseum @ Bowery Ballroom (more by Tim Griffin)
Coliseum

Deathwish has released a new sampler of bands featuring 19 songs, 15 of which are previously unreleased! Download above and check out tracks from The Hope Conspiracy, Narrows, Lewd Acts, Coliseum, Victims, Reign Supreme, Trap Them, Nails, Rot In Hell, Mother Of Mercy, Carpathian, 108, Resurrection, End of a Year, Doomriders, Pulling Teeth, Integrity, Supermachiner, J Bannon and Rise And Fall.

Speaking of Jacob Bannon and Supermachiner, we interviewed the Deathwish kingpin before we went down to Atlanta for the Scion Rock Fest.

Converge, Rise & Fall, Coliseum, Pulling Teeth (and the non-Deathwish Genghis Tron) are playing Europa in Brooklyn on March 27th... that show is now sold out.

If you don't have a ticket, but wanted to see Coliseum, don't worry you just got another chance... The band has been added to the previously announced Napalm Death / Kataklysm / Toxic Holocaust / Trap Them mindmelt! Tickets for the NYC show at the Gramercy Theatre are still on sale.

And, just prior to the Napalm Death tour, Trap Them added a few new dates including a show in New Brunswick, NJ on April 8th.

Converge

Scion Rock Fest in Atlanta is just a few days away (Feb 28th) and until the opening tones of Kylesa's guitars, we'll present a series of discussions with some of the key artists taking one of the four stages at the Masquerade. Monday we spoke to Scott Hull of Pig Destroyer and Agoraphobic Nosebleed and yesterday it was CT of Rwake. Today, we speak to none other than Jacob Bannon of Converge.

Jacob Bannon has a tattoo of a heart that covers his throat. Heart in your throat... I'd say that it's appropriate. As vocalist and lyricist for Converge, Bannon is one of a handful of the hardcore elite that crafts poignant, thought provoking lyrics that can comfortably sit side by side with the challenging hardcore mindbenders that the rest of his band spews forth. Converge has delivered blistering hardcore for more than seventeen years, and along the way Bannon has been involved in multiple side projects (Irons, Supermachiner, etc) and solo efforts, all while also steering the hardcore superlabel Deathwish Records.

Converge is set to close out Scion Rock Fest at The Masquerade in Atlanta, just a few short weeks before the band goes on a short tour that will include Europa on March 27th (tix here, full tour sched below). We sat down to talk to Bannon about the new Converge LP, Deathwish, his collaboration with Dwid of Integrity, and his forthcoming solo record.

===

You and the guys are working on the new Converge... Does it have a title? Any song titles yet? A theme?

The record does have a title as well as song titles, however we are not ready to release them just yet.

Kill the Client
Kill The Client

Let's kick this thing off the RIGHT way, an absolutely BRUTAL grind record out NOW on Willowtip.... no, not the new Phobia (though that is good, and out NOW) or the new Maruta (also out NOW)... it's Cleptocracy by unstoppable force known as Kill The Client! Blazing through eighteen tracks of searing grindcore, Cleptocracy is both destructive and engaging.... Check out "Cleptocracy and "Divide And Conquer" downloadable above!

* The above Deathwish sampler features songs by Trap Them, Blacklisted, Cold World, Narrows, 108, United Nations, The Hope Conspiracy, Victims, Rot In Hell and many others.

Graf Orlock have announced details of their upcoming cinemagrind monstrosity, Destination Time Today, along with a new track streaming at their myspace! Look for the record to land on Level Plane (Date TBD) possibly around the time that Graf Orlock hits the East Coast for a tour that is (not fully) scheduled for Jan 2009! Check out the basic itinerary below, and hold tight for details to come.

Mastodon have anounced details for Crack The Skye, their upcoming album due in 2009! As discussed, Brendan O'Brien will be on the boards for the seven track (listing below), fifty minute opus which was was recorded at Southern Tracks Studios in Atlanta. Meanwhile, the band has announced a handful of European dates with Metallica (find 'em below).

PlanksThe sickening crusty hardcore of Planks are one my my latest obsessions, and their limited 12" (500 copies) is out NOW on Narshardaa. Pick it up here and check out "Deluge" from that LP, which the band has made available for download above and scoot on over to Aversionline, who has a second track for download! Also out now on Black Box, a split LP that Planks rocked with Tombs... a taste of which is above in the form of "A Sunken City". Speaking of Tombs, the band permenantly added Andrew Hernandez (ex-ASRA badass) on drums, and I must say that he absolutely KILLED it when I saw them lay waste to the Relapse showcase during CMJ.

Black Elk's Always A Six Never A Nine is available NOW over at Crucial Blast. Check out THREE songs from the record available for download above!

Cattle Decapitation have posted a new song from and announced a date for (Jan 20th, 2009- INAUGURATION DAY!) their new album, The Harvest Floor!
