Delta Spirt @ Emos' Outside in October (more by Tim Griffin)
Delta Spirit

As we mentioned they would yesterday, tickets went on sale today for the 50th anniversary Preservation Hall Jazz Band show at Carnegie Hall which will feature guest appearances by My Morning Jacket and many others.

My Morning Jacket's big headlining Madison Square Garden show is now exactly two weeks away and there's still time to not only buy a ticket, but to win a pair from us as well. Band of Horses open the show.

Delta Spirit, who are opening other dates of the MMJ tour, will grace us with a new full length soon:

Delta Spirit announces the release of their self-titled record out March 13, 2012 on Rounder Records. Delta Spirit was produced by Chris Coady at Dreamland Recording Studios - a converted church built in 1896 in Woodstock, New York. The album follows 2010's History From Below and 2008's Ode To Sunshine.

"We found the sound that we've been looking for, that we've been growing into, and as soon as we hit on it, we ran with it. That's why it's a self-titled record, so we could connect our identity with what we think Delta Spirit is," says singer/guitarist Matt Vasquez.

Through the recording process the band grew their sound sonically, inspired to use instruments they had not previously experimented with. The album's raucous energy and no-holds barred performances will appeal to Delta Spirit's fan base, which has grown consistently thanks to their explosive live shows.

Fans will have a chance to get a sneak peak of the new material during Delta Spirit's exciting December run of dates supporting for My Morning Jacket. Stay tuned for 2012 headlining dates.

Meanwhile, if you don't have it already, you can download and listen to Delta Spirit's very first EP (released 6 years ago) for free in exchange for your email address in the widget below...

"Light sprinkles ushered in the first day of the tenth annual Austin City Limits Music (ACL) Festival, but it was a welcome reprieve from the humid heat that has been plaguing the area and the state. Music and festival fans came in droves to see their favorite ACL artists, and rumors swirled throughout the day as to who the main headliner of the evening, Kanye West, would share the stage with..." [Pegasus News]
Kanye, who was playing opposite Coldplay on Friday night, didn't share the stage with anyone except his dancers. Those who have seen or read about any of Kanye's recent shows know what his set at ACL looked like, complete with multiple acts, ballerinas and big backdrops.

Austin City Limits continues today, Saturday (9/17). You can stream it online. More pictures from Friday below...

Lollapalooza last year (more by Josh Darr)
Lollaplaooza

Lollapalooza celebrates its 20th anniversary this year with some huge names on its just-announced lineup. See it in full below.

The festival has obviously changed over the years. What started out as a farewell tour for Jane's Addiction with a 'touring festival' lineup that included the Rollins Band, Nine Inch Nails, Butthole Surfers, and Souxsie & The Banshees, has turned into a one-weekend Chicago festival that Lady Gaga co-headlined last year. As leaked a while ago, Foo Fighters, Muse and Eminem all play this year, as will Coldplay, Cee Lo Green, and My Morning Jacket along with the reunited Cars and the continuing-to-be-reunited Big Audio Dynamite and Death From Above 1979, and a bunch of other bands which may or may not be worth the ticket price depending on how you feel about the headliners and generally seeing bands in big, hot, outdoor crowded parks (Lollapalooza happens in Chicago's Grant Park from August 5th - 7th).

Full 2011 Lineup and a couple of videos (one from 1991, one from 2010), below...

Big Audio Dynamite
Coachella

As you know, Arcade Fire played a light-up beach ball-filled headlining show on Saturday, and Odd Future made their presence known to crowd members, security and those watching Lil B, but other exciting stuff, like the reunited Big Audio Dynamite killing it (and bringing some to tears), happened too. The only unfortunate part of BAD's set was that Wire, who people keep reporting was "underattended," were on at the same time. Wire was also up against the very popular Mumford & Sons who played before Animal Collective who played before Arcade Fire.

Animal Collective got their usual mixed reaction thanks in part to their usual choice of playing whatever they want no matter how big the crowd and who's on before and after them. Anonymous | April 17, 2011 6:32 AM said, "fuck animal collective. people went to the festival to have fun [,not] to have images of cum projected for an hour while the boring drones. they had the deadest crowd i've seen on the main stage so far." Anonymous | April 17, 2011 8:25 AM basically agrees and said, "AC should have never been allowed on that stage in that time slot. The worst." Anonymous | April 17, 2011 1:33 PM says, "guys AC just sucks, this ain't no new mystery.... it's almost as if they try extra hard just to be that terrible and make the crowd feel like a bunch of tools for giving them money... They're prob just a social experiment by banksy anyway." But Anonymous | April 17, 2011 3:22 PM asks, "so AC sucks for trying to make innovative, artistically rewarding music instead of god-awful corporate college-rock like arcade fire? every song is like, the same four chords played over and over and over again."

Mumford & Sons went on after Bright Eyes who went on after Broken Social Scene who went on after Erykah Badu aka Erica Abi Wright aka Loretta Brown aka Annie aka Analog Girl in the Digital World aka Medulla Oblongata, etc. (she was great despite technical difficulties).

Erykah Badu

Neko Case helped make the New Pornographers shine under hot sun. Empire of the Suns won best costumes of the day. Phoenix New Times says...

"Also, I suppose yesterday was the "Fuck Arizona" day at Coachella -- Jenny & Johnny, Bright Eyes and One Day as a Lion all had sets during the day. I actually saw someone wearing a Sound Strike t-shirt on Friday. Wearing that shirt to a music festival is doing about as much as de la Rocha and Oberst are collectively doing to combat SB 1070."
The third and final day of Coachella 2011 is underway and streaming on the internet as I type this. Our pictures from Friday are HERE. Check out more pictures from Saturday, below...

Middle Brother over Corndawg (more by Tim Griffin)
Corndawg

As the "Middle Brother" release date of March 1st approaches, the band have released the title-track from their self-titled debut album. Grab the MP3 for the first time above, or listen to the song in the band's new iPhone app. Pre-order the album via Partisan Records.

Middle BrotherMiddle Brother (the band) is comprised of the unmistakable three voices of Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes, John McCauley of Deer Tick, and Matthew Vasquez of Delta Spirit, but in "Middle Brother" (the song) you'll also recognize the voice of Jonny Corndawg who also helped them write the tune.

Middle Brother kick off their first-ever tour on March 2nd in Washington DC. That's the tour that will include FULL SETS by Middle Brother AND Deer Tick AND Dawes on almost all March dates including on March 5th at Music Hall of Williamsburg and March 6th at Bowery Ballroom. Tickets to both of those shows are still on sale.

Jonny Corndawg (pictured above) will be on the tour and performing at all Middle Brother shows, though he'll only be playing full opening sets at the newly-added April California shows (list below). After California, Corndawg heads back to NYC in time to finish off another Brooklyn residency - last time it was at Union Pool, this time it's at Brooklyn Bowl (April 4, 11, 18 & 25).

Middle Brother's March run ends at SXSW in March. There the band play the previously-mentioned Ground Control Touring showcase at Auditorium Shores on March 19th, and they will play a BrooklynVegan day party one day earlier - March 18th & Swan Dive/Barabarella. BrooklynVegan (we) have teamed up with Partisan Records and Knitting Factory for a free, afternoon, 3-stage event. It will be Middle Brother's only day party, and Deer Tick are on the bill too. The rest of the lineup and more details TBA. Stay tuned.

Back to NYC for a second, this related show is also happening:

Middle Brother
Middle Brother

As you mostly already know, Middle Brother is a group consisting of the frontmen from Deer Tick, Delta Spirit and Dawes (and the drummer from Dawes). Jonny Corndawg, who has upcoming dates with Deer Tick and Dawes, also contributed to the new Middle Brother album. Middle Brother is going on a tour with Dawes and Deer Tick in March. That tour includes shows at Bowery Ballroom, MHOW and SXSW. Now all dates have been announced (and listed below), and tickets for the NYC (and other) shows go on sale at noon.

Jonny Corndawg, who has just one week left in his Union Pool residency, is running the Surf City USA Marathon in California soon after he gets done touring with Dawes (on Superbowl Sunday to be exact). At the risk of it seeming like a conflict of interest, I took Jonny up on an his offer to be one of his race sponsors. The money he raised from BrooklynVegan and six other sponsors helped him do what he needed to do... including making an outfit with all the sponsor logos on it which is the coolest part. I can't wait to see the picture from the race (hopefully with him holding a trophy). In the meantime we have the picture of Jonny sporting sweet blue shorts, which is with all tour dates, below...

Middle Brother

As previously mentioned, Middle Brother is the alt-country supergroup consisting of Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes, John McCauley of Deer Tick, and Matthew Vasquez of Delta Spirit (each the frontman of their respective bands). As also mentioned, that group is releasing a self-titled album on March 1st. And now the first tour dates in support of that album have appeared.

Middle Brother AND Deer Tick AND Dawes (but not Delta Spirit even though Matt will be there as a member of Middle Brother) will each play a set at Music Hall of Williamsburg on March 5th, Bowery Ballroom on March 6th, and Theatre of Living Arts in Philly on March 9th. All three shows go on sale Friday at noon (worth noting: Deer Tick, Dawes and Delta Spirit have all headlined their own shows at Webster Hall already).

Middle Brother will also play the Ground Control Touring SXSW showcase at Auditorium Shores in Austin on Saturday, March 19th with Bright Eyes, the Felice Brothers and Man Man. Stay tuned for more dates.

MEANWHILE, catch John McCauley on his solo tour with The Shivers that kicks off January 14th in Boston, and catch Middle Brother contributor Jonny Corndawg at one of his upcoming shows too. Some of those Corndawg dates are with Dawes this month. All Dawes dates and some videos below...

Jonny Corndawg at a 2010 BV-CMJ Day Party (more by Chris Gersbeck)
Jonny Corndawg

Jonny Corndawg will kick off a Brooklyn residency at Union Pool tonight (1/4). Fellow Deer Tick collaborators Liz Isenberg and Bed Pigs open the show. Bed Pigs = Deer Tick's ex-guitar player Andy T (the guitar player before Ian from Titus Andronicus took over). Corndawg will also play the venue on the next two Tuesdays, bringing Pepi Ginsberg & Alana Amram on for support on 1/11, and Buffalo Stance & The Extraordinaires (who used to be Jonny's backing band) for Jan 18th. Each show will cost you $8 at the door (and free blue Mountain Dew to the first 10 paying customers in the door).

Jonny Corndawg celebrated the new year by posting a new track to his Bancdcamp page. The song "Down on The Bikini Line" is streaming below, but you can get a downloadable copy for the price of an email address.

Jonny Corndawg can also be found on the debut album by Middle Brother. You might remember them as MG&V...

"Middle Brother to release debut album in March.

Partisan Records is excited to announce that Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes, John McCauley of Deer Tick, and Matthew Vasquez of Delta Spirit have joined forces to make a very special record. The self-titled debut, recorded in January 2010 in Nashville, will be released on March 1, 2011.

Middle Brother played their first show at 2010's SXSW - a tiny, late-night, unannounced event under the moniker "MG&V." Other than recording the album and rehearsing once, they had never played the songs live. The audience (and the mob of onlookers crammed in the doorways and windows) was treated to an impossible-to-forget set by a band of musical comrades who seemed genuinely surprised by the fire that was ignited on stage. It was a rollicking and boisterous show that could have fallen apart at any moment and instead centrifuged into melodic and harmonic brilliance. What held it together was each member's sense of song and performance - a perfect, intuitive balance of craft and feel, equal parts playful and earnest."

Jonny Corndawg also played with MG&V aka Middle Brother at that SXSW show, or to be more specific, he performed "Middle Brother" with the band. It's a song he helped write which now shares a name with both the full album and the band. It's track #4 on the new album and you'll need to wait a while to hear it, but track #8, "Me Me Me", can be downloaded now for free above. Pre-order the album at Partisan. Check out the full tracklist below.

Middle Brother played their first show as "Middle Brother" on December 20th at The Troubadour in Hollywood. It was a holiday benefit with Cass McCombs, Mountain Man and Deer Tick also on the bill. They have no upcoming shows scheduled, but some will surely appear as the album release date gets closer.

Besides the Brooklyn shows, Corndawg will also hit York, PA before heading out to the West Coast for a string of dates. John and Ian from Deer Tick kick off their own solo tour later this month. Corndawg's full tour schedule, song stream and stuff, below...

Delta Spirit at Webster Hall

Tuesday night Delta Spirit played to a packed house at Webster Hall, their biggest headlining show to date. Darker My Love and The Fling opened, as they will for the remaining dates on this tour.

Long Beach natives The Fling opened the show around 8 p.m., playing a short but sweet 30 minute set. They were followed by Darker My Love (also California natives) who took the stage at 8:45 p.m. Darker My Love took small breaks in between songs to announce that there was no use in crying over spilled beer on their amp, and to thank Delta Spirit for playing the show with them. Their 9 song set included songs off their most recent album Alive as You Are, which was released this past summer.

By 10 p.m. the members of Delta Spirit started appearing on stage. The venue was packed wall-to-wall with a rambunctious, shouting audience. The band played off the crowd's energy and brought plenty of their own. Between dancing around the stage, encouraging sing alongs, copious amounts of hand clapping and a very enthusiastic fan up on stage, Delta Spirit kept the floor shaking throughout the entire set, which included a Pink Floyd cover and songs off their albums Ode to Sunshine and History From Below. Their just released five song EP entiltled The Waits Room was available as limited edition vinyl at the merch table.

Singer Matt Vasquez, who got some practice playing to the large Webster Hall crowd when he opened solo for Deer Tick on 8/13, expressed his gratitude and excitement about playing for the New York audience. Before playing "Bushwick Blues", he announced it was "for Bushwick" and dedicated "St. Francis" to non-native New Yorkers. Towards the end of the set, the enthusiasm that the audience felt became visible, with every person in attendance vigorously dancing and clapping along with the band. By 11 p.m. Delta Spirit had left the stage, but not a single person in the crowd was ready to leave and when fans demanded more music, they obliged with a two song encore consisting of "Motivation" and "People Turn Around".

Delta Spirit's Matt Vasquez @ Webster Hall (more by Tracy Allison)
Matt Vasquez

Delta Spirit are on tour now, and tickets are still on sale for their headlining show at Webster Hall tonight (Tuesday, 11/23). Dangerbird-signed LA band Darker My Love (who share members with the 2007 incarnation of the Fall and who also have a song on that Target Christmas album that WAVVES/Best Coast is on) and Long Beach band The Fling open the show and the tour.

Delta Spirit just released a new EP entitled the The Waits Room which you can download now on iTunes, and get on limited edition vinyl at the merch table. Yourstru.ly, who posted a video of the band performing "Bushwick Blues" for the EP, has the story...

"Hidden in the hills of Northern California lies the bucolic town of Cotati, CA. Unbeknownst to many, a musical landmark exists there called Prairie Sun Studios, where many incredible musicians have rattled and hummed, including the venerable Tom Waits himself. And, just this year, Delta Spirit stepped into that very studio to record their soulful rocker, History From Below. In the midst of recording, the band discovered "The Waits Room," a gutted closet on the studio grounds where the man himself records to this very day. Echoes abound, the room creates a sound that reverberates until your body is lulled to rest. Although a full-fledged studio space exists, where most of the album recording took place, with roomsound like that, the band couldn't help but record tracks in there from time to time. In fact, it was such a gorgeous sound, ideal for Delta Spirit's folk-blues bliss, that they recorded an entire live EP in it. The result is the Waits Room EP, a 5-song burner..."

Delta Spirit @ Bowery Ballroom in June (more by Joshua Ballinger)
Delta Spirit

Delta Spirit will get back on the road in November, again in support of their latest album History From Below (out now via Rounder Records. Last time they were in NYC, they played sold out shows at Bowery Ballroom and Music Hall. This time they'll step it up a notch and play one big show at Webster Hall (where the band's frontman Matt Vasquez played as opener to Deer Tick in August). The new NYC show is November 23rd and tickets are on AmEx presale now (general sale begins Friday).

Speaking of Rounder Records, Delta Spirit's label-mate Robert Plant has a new record that is out now, and he played his own sold out show at Bowery Ballroom just this past weekend.

John McCauley & Matt Vasquez @ Webster Hall
Matt Vasquez

Friday night (8/13) Deer Tick played a phenomenal show for a very enthusiastic audience at a very full Webster Hall. This show was their last before leaving for a month long European tour on September 9th. Prior to the performance, the band promoted the show on their twitter page with various tweets promising motorcyles, horses on nitrous, and crowd surfing babies. While none of those promises were kept, it certainly was not a show to be missed. One audience member commented on the performance, saying, "This was the best Deer Tick show I've ever seen. You could tell how excited they were to be here tonight."

While the show did not begin until 8 p.m., a small line had formed outside of Webster Hall before the doors opened at 6:30 p.m. and a few devoted fans claimed their spots directly in front of the stage as soon as the venue allowed them in. Opener Matt Vasquez (sans the rest of his band, Delta Spirit) took the stage at 8 p.m., expressing how happy he was to be performing and telling the audience he would gladly take song requests. Deer Tick frontman John McCauley joined Matt briefly for a song. By the end of his set, not only was the room fairly full, he was commanding it with just his voice and his guitar.

Around 9 p.m., after a quick introduction by a friend and the sounds of an air horn, the members of Deer Tick began appearing on stage. During their hour and forty-five minute set, lead singer John McCauley serenaded audience members and passed around a bottle of Jack Daniels. Vasquez joined Deer Tick briefly for one song. The band played songs from their three albums, War Elephant, Born on Flag Day, and The Black Dirt Sessions, as well as MG&V covers, a sax solo, and a handful of newer songs. Prior to starting their encore, McCauley grabbed a mysterious box that had been sitting on stage, handed it to the audience, and told them to pass it back. Moments later silly string was flying everywhere and by the time the rambunctious encore was over, the drum set was torn apart and various instruments were covering a good portion of the stage. Despite the state of the equipment, the audience began chanting "One more song! One more song!" to which Deer Tick obliged, returning to the stage as all the members took part in singing an a beautiful a cappella rendition of "Dirty Dishes"

Less than a month earlier, Deer Tick kicked off their North American tour with a sold out show at Maxwell's. More pictures from the tour-ending show at Webster Hall, and all upcoming dates, below...

Delta Spirit @ Bowery Ballroom
Delta Spirit

"Matthew Vasquez' powerful voice and lyrics once again emerged as the driving forces behind the band's second soulful album, History from Below (released June 2010), and at the band's second consecutive live performance in NYC. Formed in 2005 in San Diego, CA, the band has the perfect structure of a classic American rock band, with heavy soul and folk influences enhanced by the use of unusual instruments (trash can lids) and guest appearances by friends toting French horns. They were not short of special friends and a tremendously layered, collaborative wall of sound on the night of this performance, and yet- managed to maintain a strong smattering of classic, pop hooks to please a crowd that clearly came to enjoy one another's company as well as their time with the band.

Delta Spirit are one of the most truly special, heart-swelling rock acts you can catch, leading an experience definitely meant to be shared, and are at the helm of a renaissance of real American music." [shortandsweetnyc]

Delta Spirit are still on the tour that brought them through NYC for two sold out and high energy nights (June 30th @ Bowery, July 1st @ MHOW). The above review is from MHOW. The pictures are from, and the show I was at was, Bowery Ballroom. As tweeted, the set ended with the entire room and dancing, and confetti.

Delta Spirit's tour ends in their home state on July 24th and then the band is on break until September when they head to Europe for some shows. Frontman Matt Vasquez will use part of that time off to come back to NYC for another show. You can catch him solo when he opens for Deer Tick at Webster Hall on August 13th. And the fact that Matt and Deer Tick frontman John McCauley are almost certain to collaborate on stage makes this one a show not to miss (and one to not miss the opener). Tickets are still on sale.

Meanwhile, Deer Tick kick off their summer tour on July 17th in their home state, and can be caught at Maxwell's in Hoboken two days later, on July 19th, with These United States and Jonny Corndawg (sold out!).

All dates, more pictures of DS @ Bowery Ballroom, the Webster Hall poster, and a bunch of videos, below...

Delta Spirit

The Delta Spirit's second record, History From Below, came out earlier in June on Rounder Records. If you order it at Amazon, you get an exclusive bonus track.

That album's "Bushwick Blues" (which you can get above) was debuted here in May...and now there's video to accompany the impassioned lost-love tune. Though there's no audience at the session, recorded at Prairie Sun Studios in Cotati, CA, singer Matt Vazquez has no problem throwing himself into the song's romantic vortex. Somewhere around the two-minute mark the band seems to collectively fixate on the inevitability of the words, recharging for the final heartrending thrust a minute later.

The band has a pair of NYC shows coming up, at Bowery Ballroom on June 30th and Music Hall of Williamsburg on July 1st, both with Ezra Furman & the Harpoons and The Romany Rye. The first night of that is sold out but tickets for the second at MHOW are on sale.

Those shows are part of a larger tour for the band that continues all the way to California. All tour dates and the video are below...

History From Below

San Diego's Delta Spirit are set to release their sophomore album History From Below via Rounder Records on June 8th. Already one of my favorite albums of the year, I couldn't be happier that they let me debut track number two, "Bushwick Blues" on, appropriately, "Brooklyn Vegan". Like many of their soulful indie-Americana songs, "Bushwick Blues" tells a moving story of love and loss. More specifically it tell the story of a girl, a fellow singer-songwriter even, that the California band's front-man Matthew Vasquez fell in love with right here in Brooklyn (Bushwick). Check it out above.

Tickets are still on sale for Delta Spirit's upcoming shows at Bowery Ballroom on June 30th and Music Hall of Williamsburg on July 1st. More dates & MG&V info in a previous post. Some videos of the band performing songs from the new album, with its tracklist, below...

MG& V @ the All House
McCauley, Vasquez and Goldsmith

MG&V, the new project of John McCauley (frontman of Deer Tick), Taylor Goldsmith (frontman of Dawes), and Matt Vasquez (frontman of Delta Spirit), made their debut (not counting a private performance they taped for IFC one day earlier) with a late-night set to a capacity crowd at Austin's Ale House on Friday, March 19th. Taylor's brother and bandmate Griffin played drums. Delta Spirit's Kelly Winrich played keys. Deer Tick family member Jonny Corndawg helped perform a song he also recorded and wrote with the group. As Duke Street Blog points out, "The set was filled with heartfelt Americana tunes, all featuring a healthy splash of CSN-like harmonies." Deer Tick actually played a set an hour earlier at Lucero's SXSW showcase at Red Eyed Fly (where they were joined by Nikki Darlin for a song). John ran right from show to show (as did Tim and I) (luckily we all saw Lucero earlier that same day). More pictures and a bunch of videos from both shows are below.

Their regular bands all made their fair share of appearances at SXSW this year too. Deer Tick (who played BV shows in 2009 and 2008) even had their own unofficial showcase this year at Threadgill's (with Cordawg, Those Darlins, Liz Isenberg, Chris Paddock and others on the bill). One of Dawes's shows was at the official BrooklynVegan showcase. Various videos from the week below.

Coming up, Deer Tick have a huge list of tour dates, which include shows with Those Darlins and run with Dr. Dog that makes a May 15th stop at Terminal 5.

Dawes's shows include opening for Josh Ritter at Town Hall on May 19th and a June tour with Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros.

Jonny Corndawg will play shows in April and June that include April 7th at Pianos, April 8th at Knitting Factory with Tim Barry, and June 11th with David Allan Coe. All dates below.

Last but not least, Delta Spirit have announced a run of tour dates set for June and July. They'll bring along Ezra Furman & the Harpoons and The Romany Rye for those. The three bands play Bowery Ballroom on June 30th and Music Hall of Williamsburg on July 1st. Tickets just went on sale.

Delta Spirit's new record, History From Below, is set to come out June 8th on Rounder Records.

"All we wanted to do is put the record together one song at a time," says Delta Spirit's singer/guitarist Matthew Vasquez about History From Below. "It's been three years of straight touring off our last record so most of the songs were written in hotel rooms and tested in front of an audience. We spent spent six months of this last year making a record that sums up three years of growing up."
The album was produced by My Morning Jacket's keyboardist Bo Koster and Eli Thomson, and you can check out the album art and tracklist below.

Everything mentioned, pictures, videos & lots of tour dates, below...

MG&V
MOF

Move over Monsters of Folk. Monsters of Fuck are here. Well, actually they're called MG&V which stands for McCauley, Goldsmith, and Vasquez aka John McCauley (frontman of Deer Tick), Taylor Goldsmith (frontman of Dawes), and Matt Vasquez (frontman of Delta Spirit) (we can still call them Monsters of Fuck unofficially though). This is their story:

Notoriously adverse to sitting still, John McCauley felt the urge to write and record during some of Deer Tick's recent downtime. Deer Tick chose Dawes to support a leg of their summer 2009 tour, during which McCauley and Goldsmith developed an affinity for each other's songwriting. McCauley decided that Nashville would be the perfect location to write some new songs, and invited Goldsmith to join him. As the project began to take shape, McCauley and Goldsmith decided Matt Vasquez was the man to complete their vision for the project. A few days after tape started rolling, Vasquez arrived in Nashville-never having met McCauley. The three songwriters immediately bonded and proceeded to make a timeless masterpiece. Dawes drummer Griffin Goldsmith also joined the group to contribute percussion.
I can't comment on the "masterpiece" aspect of this yet - I still haven't heard it, but I'm excited to. And I hope to catch MG&V live when they make their world debut at the Coda Agency SXSW Showcase at the Ale House on Friday, March 19th at 1 AM. More album details still TBA.

And yes, all three of those bands will also be at SXSW on their own. Deer Tick has a bunch of shows and their own curated day party. Delta Spirit has a bunch of shows too, and Dawes plays the official BrooklynVegan showcase at Club DeVille on Wednesday March 17th. They go on at 8, and if you miss them, they play more shows too. All dates and flyers below...

Delta Spirit @ Bonnaroo '09 (more by Graeme Flegenheimer)
Delta Spirit

Fans across the country can expect to hear twice as much from San Diego's Delta Spirit in the New Year. The band, who spent the first half of 2009 opening for The Shins, will be headlining their own bills come 2010 as they gear up for the release of their second LP, History from Below, this May. But in what may be a further evidence of a coming decade of music biz frugality practicality, the boys behind all that jingly, feelgood Americana are bowing out of a lower 48 push and playing just small venues in major cities -- twice apiece with a week to simmer in between sets. [Culture Mob]
The full dates of The Delta Spirit's uniquely sequenced tour are below. They play four NYC shows as part of the trip, which kicks off February 1st - a gig at Pianos (2/4) followed by Union Hall (2/5), then the same sequence again a week later (2/11 & 2/12). California's The Willowz (think White Stripes) open. Tickets are on sale for the Pianos shows (Union Hall seems to be sold-out already).

The Willowz recently put out an album of their own, Everyone (Dim Mak/Downtown Records) in December. A 'Making Of' featurette for Everyone video and all tour dates are below...
