Pharrell / Future Islands / Ty Segall / mean girls
Watching Ty Segall at the Outdoor Theatre to kick off my Saturday drove home a 2014 Coachella reality: the relative lack of noisy, guitar-driven bands. While the bill is loaded with synthy, electronic-leaning indie types, traditional rock acts are few and far between this year. As if to illustrate the point, late in his gloriously loud and raucous set, Segall covered "Mötörhead" by Mötörhead, one of a handful of truly heavy bands at the fest.Coachella 2014 recently wrapped up its first of two weekends. You already saw pictures of day 1, and we've got a set of day 2 pics in this post, including shots of Pet Shop Boys, Pharrell, Queens of the Stone Age, Pixies, Fatboy Slim, Lorde, Future Islands, Warpaint, Julian Casablancas, Ty Segall, Graveyard, Foxygen, Laura Mvula and more.
...I arrived 20 minutes early Saturday night [for the Pixies], just in case, but while the Mojave eventually filled and then some, things never got ugly. As for the set itself, I doubt I'll ever adjust to seeing Black Francis, Joey Santiago and David Lovering on a stage without Kim Deal, but the new-look Pixies produced a quality set nonetheless, bashing out extra-ferocious versions of "Gouge Away," "Nimrod's Son," "Crackity Jones" and more. [Las Vegas Weekly]
Of course there's too much to catch everything, but many other great artists played the second day too, including Solange whose sister Beyonce came on stage to dance with her (video below), Nas whose frenemy Jay Z joined him for "Dead Presidents II" and "Where I'm From" and Diddy (I mean Puff Daddy) joined him for "Hate Me Now" (full set video below), indie legends The Dismemberment Plan, post-rock vets Mogwai, plus sets from MGMT, Washed Out, Bombay Bicycle Club, Holy Ghost and many more.
One of the big talks of the day was Pharrell (and his hat), who brought out loads of guests who reminded the crowd that Pharrell wasn't a nobody before "Happy," "Get Lucky" and "Blurred Lines" (all three of which he played). He produced or co-produced huge hits for Snoop Dogg ("Drop It Like It's Hot"), Gwen Stefani ("Hollaback Girl"), Busta Rhymes ("Pass the Courvoisier") and Nelly ("Hot in Herre"), all of who joined him for said songs. A few videos from his set below.

Sean "Diddy" Combs is launching his own music television network, REVOLT, later this month. What's it all about? The "multi-genre, multi-platform music network" will feature "that new shit, the stuff that people are afraid to play," Diddy says in a new promotional video, and adds,"If you like good music, you finally have a home."
While the cable network doesn't launch till October 21, REVOLT's YouTube channel has been busy over the last few months doing short features on a wide variety of artists. With their slogan "Powered by Music, Driven by Culture & Fueled by You!" it sounds a little like Current.TV's model when it started. Among the folks who'll be working there, onscreen and off, is former Stereogum editor Amrit Singh.
You can check out a few REVOLT video segments below...
When, Diddy announced via Twitter yesterday that he was a "series regular" on Downton Abbey and PBS denied it, we wondered if it might be for a Funny or Die video? Turned out that's indeed what it was. Sean Combs let us know that despite producers announcing they'd just cast their first black character on the popular PBS/BBC melodrama, he had in fact already been on the show as Lord Wolcott, "the new owner of Down Town Abbey," despite being ignored by the rest of the cast. See how it all plays out in Downton Diddy, below...
The producers of extremely popular Masterpiece Theatre soap opera Downton Abbey told fans they were adding their first black character for the show's fourth season. If Diddy's tweet is to be believed, he'll be playing that role, a jazz musician Jack Ross. Apart from the promised "sneak preview," you're still going to have to wait a while, as Season Four won't premiere until season which will premiere January 5, 2014 when it will be back for eight episodes.
UPDATE: PBS denies Diddy's involvement in Downton Abbey! NY Mag says, "Diddy, meanwhile, is still retweeting various congratulation posts, as if this is really a thing. Maybe he just read The Secret?"
Diddy even posted a "sneak peak" picture to Instagram, ha. Maybe a Funny or Die video is on the way?
UPDATE: Yep, that's exactly what it is.

R&B singer Dawn Richard was formerly a member the mid-2000s Bad Boy Records-signed all-female group Danity Kane, after which she joined Diddy Dirty Money and then began a solo career in 2011 which led to 2012's Armor On, one of the most overlooked but great EPs of last year. The EP harnessed dark multi-layered production that pulled from Afro-centric polyrhythms, minimal late night sensuality, and radio appeal, and showed Dawn growing as an increasingly versatile singer. If you haven't yet, you can watch the video for EP track, "Bombs," below.
Dawn followed that EP last month (December) with the Whiteout EP and is now set to release a full length, GoldenHeart on January 15. Dawn just revealed snippets from the new album and you can stream those and check out the tracklist below. That's the cover art above. The album features production from Druski (who worked on Armor On), Fisticuffs (who worked with Miguel on his great Kaleidoscope Dream), and Denote. You can pre-order it now.
Dawn has a few dates scheduled (and is promising more) including one in NYC two days after the album release, January 17 at SOB's with Bridget Kelly and Aaron Camper. Tickets for that show are on sale now.
A list of all dates, snippets and tracklist from the new album, and the video for "Bombs," below...

Just before Christmas 2010, a 36-year-old black man, Trevell Coleman, walks into a police station in Harlem and tells the cops that something's been troubling him. He was involved in a shooting many years ago, sixteen or seventeen years ago, and has information they might want to hear. At first the cops take his name and number, tell him to go home, we'll look into it, but that was a long time ago. They never call. The above quote comes from GQ's Editor in Chief, who served as a foreman for a jury on a murder case for former-Bad Boy Records MC G-Dep. As stated above, G-Dep came into the police station to confess to the 1993 murder and as a result of said confession Trevell Coleman was sentenced to 15 years in prison today.
He goes back into the station a few weeks later. It is really eating him. He tells them he was the shooter. He doesn't know if the guy lived or died, and he needs to know. He wants to tell the whole story. He wants to "make right" with the victim's family. Incredibly, he waives his Miranda rights, does not ask for a lawyer, and begins to confess. -[GQ]
Coleman, who wrestled with drugs and alcohol in the years following the shooting including during his stint as a Bad Boy artist, is married and currently has three children of school age. He commented to MTV news earlier this month that the guilty verdict "was God's will" and that he wanted "to thank everyone that was involved in the case" and harbored "no ill thoughts towards anybody". Sad story all the way around.
G-Dep released Child of The Ghetto in 2001 spawning the singles "Let's Get It" and "Special Delivery", the latter of which spawned a remix with Ghostface Killah, Keith Murray, Craig Mack, and P. Diddy.
Snoop & Kurupt at Brooklyn Bowl (more by Tim Griffin)
it was expected that during a weekend of music and festivities that Nate Dogg's legacy would be highlighted at some of the events of this past weekend's SXSW music festival in Austin.Venue 222 was also known as "VIBE House" for the week, and you can watch videos from the tribute-filled final night below.
Snoop Dogg, Warren G, Daz Dillinger and Kurupt all took the stage at Venue 222 during the "Respect The West" showcase and properly memorialized their fallen friend this past Saturday (March 19). MTV News captured some of the celebratory tribute on video which was a huge contrast to the somber tweets and condolences from those who knew Nate Dogg well.
Snoop Dogg and the rest of the D.P.G.C. seemed to put all of their energy into their performances, including a touching moment of silence - capped with Snoop inhaling a certain substance during the pause to show his respects.
Although the show was festive, Warren G admitted to MTV News that while he and his west coast brethren gave their best that the crew deeply misses their long-time colleague. "It means a lot, you know, because this is something that's being done for a person that we really love. It's deeper than music, that's a brother to us, to me and Kurupt and Snoop and Daz ... it's really deeper than that." -[MTV News]
What other Nate Dogg tributes did you catch at SXSW? !!! did a cover at our Saturday BrooklynVegan Day Party at Barbarella (more info on that coming in a review of the whole show).

"I can never thank @iamdiddy enough. And everyone who helped make that happen on any level. Never give up. #diddygethard" - Chris Gethard
Puff Daddy & Chris Get Hard @ UCB (photo by Ari Scott)
"At about 11:30 p.m. [on Friday], Mr. Gethard (pronounced GETH-erd) could be found in his mended glasses, pacing the pea-green dressing room of the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater in Chelsea. He had been told Diddy would be arriving soon, but then, that rapper had broken promises to him in the past, and he was trying to keep his expectations in check. The Apiary says the show "will surely be remembered as one of the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater's most talked about "Were you there when..." moments in its history."
"He just lives on a different planet from me," said Mr. Gethard, who was drinking from a 16-ounce can of Red Bull and repeatedly applying ChapStick to his lips. "I have no idea why he's doing this."
Then, through a back door, Diddy arrived, as unassumingly as one could enter a room with a hulking bodyguard (as well as an assistant and his teenage son, Justin). Dressed casually in a thermal shirt and jeans, Diddy (whose given name is Sean Combs) introduced himself to Mr. Gethard and the other comedians he'd soon be performing with. They chatted about the night's routine and Mr. Gethard warned Diddy not to take personal offense at anything in the show.
"That's good," Diddy replied, "because I'll talk about everything.""
I don't know when the next edition of The Chris Gethard Show hits UCB in NYC, but you can catch Chris and the gang on tour across the country now, and with some effort you can figure out (or influence) exactly where. All I know (and they know) is that the tour ends at UCB n LA on 1/27. A video with some more info on the tour is below too.
Meanwhile, head to UCB in NYC on Monday night (1/17) to catch the next edition of Whiplash with special guests John Mulaney (SNL), Moshe Kasher, Mike Drucker, Jim Marsdale, and... Daniel Kitson who has that night off from his current St Ann's Warehouse run.

Would you confuse these two men?
California ex-drug kingpin Ricky "Freeway" Ross filed a trademark lawsuit against rapper Rick Ross in a California Federal Court on Friday June 18. According to the Miami New Times blog, Ross is suing the rapper for stealing his name, image and likeness to create a successful rap career. ...Ross and his lawyer Melvin Sharpe Jr. are also suing Maybach Music -- rapper Rick Ross' label -- Universal Music Group Recordings, Slip-N-Slide Records -- the independent label the rapper first signed to before signing to a major -- and Jay-Z, who was President of Def Jam Records when rapper Rick Ross signed to the label in 2006. - [Billboard]
Maybe "Freeway" Ricky Ross is trying to get at the dough that the Miami MC will make at the Power 105.1 show at The Beach at Governor's Island on August 22nd. There, the former prison guard (named after a drug dealer?) will join up with Diddy & Dirty Money, Ciara, Kelly Rowland, Keri Hilson, Bobby Valentino, Fat Joe, Maino, and others. Tickets are on sale at noon today (7/2).
Also on board is Jay-Z prodigy J Cole, who recently released a new video for "Who Dat" available below. The MC will drop his as-yet untitled Roc Nation debut this October, which features contributions from Pharrell, Jim Jonsin, and Salaam Remi though the bulk of the production was handled by Chicago producer (and Kanye West mentor) No I.D.. Look for that.

The first of two Raekwon album release parties happened last night at a very packed Santos Party House in NYC (8/8). Not surprisingly, all advertised guests didn't show up. Talib Kweli was on the flyer, but I guess they forgot that Talib already had a scheduled gig for last night... with Mos Def... at House of Blues in Boston. Hilarity aside, Raekwon's new album Only Built 4 Cuban Linx II is one of the best hip hop albums of the year, and there was craziness inside Santos last night. Some videos below...
On September 9, Raekwon The Chef of the Wu-Tang Clan is dropping the much-awaited sequel to his 1995 classic Only Built 4 Cuban Linx... a triumph of storytelling, technically proficient rhymes and gritty Shaolin-style production. Granted, he has kept to this formula since his debut with the Clan, but Part II will be his greatest triumph of the decade, with production by RZA as well as Dr. Dre, J. Dilla, Pete Rock, Marly Marl, Necro, The Alchemist and Allah Mathematics, with rhymes contributed by Slick Rick, Busta Rhymes, The Lox. Ghostface Killah will reprise his role as the secondary rapper on the album, and there will be also be multiple appearances by Wu-Tang stalwarts Method Man, GZA and Inspectah Deck. The amazing lineup for the Only Built 4 Cuban Linx II release party at Santos on September 8th includes (of course) Raekwon, as well as key collaborator Ghostface. Joining them at the Diddy-hosted show will be the likes of Beanie Sigel, Bustah Rhymes, Talib Kweli, Slick Rick, Lyfe Jennings and more. The full cast is below with the flyer. No word on tickets yet.
At 8pm on the release date, Santos Party House will be holding the concert and celebration, which promises to be flat out the best real hip-hop event the city has seen in a long time.
Two nights later, S.O.B.'s hosts its own Raekwon release show with Raekwon & Ghostface Killah. If there will be more special guests at that show too, they aren't announced. Tickets for the September 10th show are on sale.
Ghostface's own new record, The Wizard of Poetry, is due on September 29th on Def Jam. He's got his own show coming up at BB King's in November. "Baby," the first video from that new disc, is posted below.
Raekwon appeared on the bill of this year's Rock the Bells tour. Videos from his Boston and Jones Beach appearances are below...

"Back in March, Diddy announced via Twitter that he loved the Arctic Monkeys so much that he was planning on joining them. On Monday night at New York's Highline Ballroom, he didn't quite make it on stage but seemed content enough dancing in the crowd as the Sheffield four-piece played an intimate show in front of 700 fans. Clearly thrilled at the band's performance, the Bad Boy CEO grooved through their hit single 'I Bet You Look Good on the Dance Floor.' And did he.Speaking of muscular...
Fresh from their slot at All Points West, the Arctic Monkeys spent much of their set trying out new material from their forthcoming album 'Humbug.' Although the album, produced in part by Queens of the Stone Age singer Josh Homme, signals a turn into darker, moodier realms, the band turned in a surprisingly muscular performance, airing a total of six fresh cuts including 'My Propeller,' lead single 'Crying Lightning' and a frighteningly heavy version of the Nick Cave's 'Red Right Hand.'" "Central Park SummerStage is a tradition in New York, one in which music lovers flock to in order to catch a free show from an array of artists. This past weekend Q-Tip took to the stage, after performances by openers Benji B, Little Dragon and Max and D.A. of pop band Chester French and rocked the park at the Giant Step sponsored event.Saturday's show in Central Park happened at the same time as the Siren Festival in Coney Island. More pictures and a bunch of videos from it, below...
The 'Renaissance Man' ran through his set with the energy and exuberance he's known for but it was his impromptu dance partner who stole the show.
While fans surely won't forget the SummerStage performances of Tribe classics, including 'Bonita Applebum,' 'Award Tour' and 'Sucka N---a,' it was Diddy's participation on Tip's solo hit 'Vivrant Thing' that made the crowd go wild. Sean "Diddy" Combs took it back to the '90s with the Puff Daddy two-step/shuffle as he danced alongside Tip. Anything and everything can happen in New York!" [The Boombox]
On a stage outside a North Philadelphia theater where some of the greatest R&B artists once performed, Jay-Z and other members of the hip-hop elite exhorted 10,000 young people yesterday to become part of history by voting for Sen. Barack Obama.
A throng of energized young people, many of them Temple University students, gathered in front of the historic Uptown Theater on Broad Street about 1 p.m. to hear rappers Jay-Z and Sean "Diddy" Combs and singer Mary J. Blige urge them to cast ballots for the senator from Illinois.
"I need y'all to be really, really quiet for this. I need you to really understand what I'm telling you," Jay-Z said. "Rosa Parks sat so Martin Luther King could walk. Martin Luther King walked so Obama could run. Obama's running so we all can fly." [Philadelphia Inquirer]
Beyonce and Russell Simmons were at yesterday's event too. More pictures at Barack Obama's Flickr account.
In semi-related news, Jay-Z's successor at Def Jam commited suicide over the weekend.
