Grimes / Kendrick Lamar / Slowdive
The 2014 Pitchfork Music Festival wrapped up yesterday (7/20) after two previous days of fun in Chicago's Union Park. It was an especially diverse day with plenty of hip hop (Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, Earl Sweatshirt, Isaiah Rashad), flourishes of heavy offerings (Deafheaven, Perfect Pussy), a highly anticipated reunion from Slowdive, plenty of indie rock/pop (Grimes, Majical Cloudz, DIIV, Real Estate, Dum Dum Girls, Speedy Ortiz) and even more. Here's how the Sunday of Pitchfork Fest went down...
By the time I arrived on Sunday, Speedy Ortiz were well into their set on the Blue stage and playing the fan favorite "Taylor Swift." Speedy's recorded material has always oozed personality and attitude, and their live show does as well. Frontwoman Sadie Dupuis comfortably ad libbed lyrics with various shouts and word extensions throughout their set. The band polished off their live-wire performance with a couple of tunes from their Real Hair EP and their new song "Bigger Party." -ZP
Over on the Green stage, Bandcamp sweethearts Mutual Benefit simultaneously opened up the fest's final day with a few of their sweet, melodic tunes. With an entire live band backing frontman Jordan Lee's soft-spoken, almost falsetto vocal range and feather light lyrics. The crowd was surprisingly full for the early afternoon set, and many closer to the band seemed to know every word off of its debut studio album Love's Crushing Diamond. Highlights included a heartfelt rendition of "Golden Wake" and a take on "Advanced Falconry" perfect for warming people up for the rest of the day. -AG
DIIV kicked off the first show on the Red stage yesterday and played for a fairly large early afternoon crowd, beginning their set with a new song called Follow . The band jangly guitar indie pop made for some excellent summer jams. Keeping with that theme, they played a few tracks that showed hints of surf rock, and the lead singer Zachary Cole Smith wore a colorful flamenco looking shirt that Prince might be proud of. -MM
Syracuse rockers Perfect Pussy drew a huge crowd on Sunday, surprising even lead singer Meredith Graves. Their set was short but powerful, not unusual for a band whose last record, 2014's Say Yes To Love, clocks in at around twenty one minutes. After a lengthy sound check, a rarity for the band, they didn't waste time getting into their set. While they sounded excellent, the real highlight of the show was, as always, Graves' fantastic performance as a vocalist and frontwoman. Her theatrical dancing stood in delicious contrast to the pure energy of each song. The crowd barely got a chance to calm down from one pit before another song crashed down, opening up an even bigger floor. Although the band seemed a bit flustered by the crowd and the midday heat, they never let up, quickly running through hits off of their debut album and demo, touching on fan favorites such as "Interference Fits," "Advance Upon The Real," "I," and "II." -AG
Next up were Deafheaven on the Green stage. The California crew began their set with the glimmering Sunbather opener "Dream House," and proceeded to match the weather with equal parts soaring shoegaze and metal assault. Lead guitarist Kerry McCoy expertly segued the band into "Irresistible," and then to "Sunbather." That block was followed by their spacey new tune "From The Kettle Unto The Coil," which contains a traditional metal breakdown in the middle. George Clark's guttural shrieks glided effortlessly over the riffage, and he's quite the frontman too, thrashing about the stage. Deafheaven closed their incredibly moving performance with "Unrequited" off of 2011's Roads to Judah. Not all "metal" acts are appropriate for a daytime slot, but Deafheaven were damn near a perfect fit. -ZP
After Deafheaven, I headed over to the blue stage to catch a bit of Isaiah Rashad's set. As one of three TDE rappers of the day (along with Kendrick Lamar and Schoolboy Q), Rashad stood out with his southern flow, relaxed vibe, and raspy delivery. He drew a huge crowd, who danced and sang along to "Heavenly Father" and "Menthol" off of this year's Cilvia Demo. You can hear a bit of guys like Kendrick Lamar and Chance the Rapper in Rashad's delivery, and with the amount that the crowd was feeling it, it'll only be a matter of time before he rises up to their level. -ZP
Continuing the hip hop block, next up was Earl Sweatshirt on the red stage. His DJ played a few songs before Earl came out -- Chief Keef's "3Hunna," Tyler the Creator's "Sandwitches," etc. -- and when he finally took the stage, Earl had the crowd sing along to about half of "Don't Stop Believin'" as it played over the PA. When he actually got started, the first song Earl played was "20 Wave," accompanied by Odd Future associate Domo Genesis. Downtempo tunes from Doris hit much harder than I expected them to, and the crowd was hyped on it. He took things to another level by playing the very heavy "Kill" from his debut album Earl. Earl's been touring quite a bit lately and that definitely showed in his live performance -- he's become a showman and has so much control over the audience. Before playing "Molasses," he had the crowd repeat its hook back -- "Ima fuck the freckles off your face, bitch." -ZP
Dum Dum Girls had some minor technical difficulties before starting their set, but once things got going they sounded great. As usual, they were in matching outfits, and played a mix of the old and new. My personal favorite from the set was "Rimbaud Eyes", an excellent single from their recent Too True LP. -MM
One of the most anticipated sets of the day by many was Schoolboy Q's late afternoon performance on the Green stage. The party rapper got things started with his hit "Hands on the Wheel," and then jumped to 2014's Oxymoron for "What They Want" and "Gangsta." He reached back to his debut studio album Setbacks for "Druggys wit Hoes," and the crowd went nuts. Q's a fine addition to any festival, offering hyped-up vibes and heavy beats. -ZP
Craving some shade, I went to check out Jon Hopkins over at the Blue stage. His seemingly dance-focused set was based upon a series of glitchy Immunity tracks, including bits of "We Disappear," "Open Eye Signal," "Breathe This Air," and others. The Blue stage was simultaneously the place for those who wanted to dance and others who'd rather take a seat and nod their heads along. -ZP
I was fortunate to see Majical Cloudz perform as an opener for The Soft Moon a few years ago and it was great seeing how much more confident the duo had become since then. Frontman Devon Welsh sported his never changing plain white tee and black pants and started a few songs with countdowns that the crowd enthusiastically chanted along with. I was hoping Welsh would later join Grimes on stage during her set to play their collaborative "Nightmusic" from Grimes' Visions album, or maybe their recently unearthed demo about an obese cat. Grimes played the former, but Welsh was nowhere in sight. -MM
Shoegaze legends Slowdive played their first U.S. show as a reunited band this Sunday. While the crowd seemed to mostly be waiting for headliner Kendrick Lamar, who was playing on the same stage a few hours later, their true fans did make themselves known, responding enthusiastically to classics off of their unforgettable 1993 release, Souvlaki. Slowdive lived up to the precedent set by fellow reunited UK shoegazers, My Bloody Valentine, playing a loud, intense set. Songs like "When the Sun Hits," gained a heavy, aggressive edge, giving Deafheaven a run for its money in respect to ferocity. Softer tunes like "Alison" lulled the crowd into a collective bliss. -AG
After that on the Blue stage it was DJ Spinn, who was initially going to perform with his collaborator DJ Rashad before Rashad's untimely passing, but decided to stay on the festival and perform his own set which Chicago Tribute called "a thrilling display of the "ghetto house" sound that has thrived in the city's South Side neighborhoods for the better part of two decades."
Canadian pop sensation Grimes was the penultimate performer of Pitchfork 2014, an honor she did not take lightly. In addition to running through classics, Grimes treated the crowd to two relatively new songs and one for which she was still working out the lyrics. She had seemingly boundless energy, dancing feverishly throughout her entire set. She seemed to be having the time of her life, playing with multiple synthesizers and vocal reverb to create the image of DJ set. This was clearly a different Grimes than we have seen in the past - she was confident, loud, and ready to party with the audience. Fans went crazy for Grimes classics such as "Circumambient" and "Oblivion," and stayed dancing even for her lesser-known songs, such as "Be a Body." However, the highlight of the set was undoubtedly the last few songs. After premiering a new song on which she had just completed production to a rousing response from the audience, Grimes treated the crowd to "Phone Sex," a Blood Diamonds song on which she is featured. She then broke out her dance floor-ready hit, "Go," to the delight of the audience. It was clear when the drop hit in "Go" that this was a new, supersized Grimes, ready to take the world's dance clubs by storm and become the next EDM sweetheart. Always the performer, she closed out her set with her biggest hit to date, 2012's "Genesis." -AG
Sunday headliner and festival bookend Kendrick Lamar put on a helluva show with his excellent four-piece band behind him. Lamar began to hold court with the good vibes "Money Trees" and very live "Backseat Freestyle" off of good kid, m.A.A.d city. The pro band managed to handle every little nuance contained in Kendrick's beats, and there are plenty of 'em. Unlike most of his peers, Lamar isn't much for cutting songs halfway through. Almost all tunes, with the exception of "The Art of Peer Pressure," were performed in their entirety. Virtually undisputed party song "Swimming Pools (Drank)" came next, followed by the boom bap of "m.A.A.d city." The last tune I heard before splitting was the chilled out "Sing About Me, I'm Dying Of Thirst." Kendrick provided the perfect ending to the day and the entire festival. -ZP

Sky Ferreira / DIIV @ MHOW - 7/9/14
NYC pop singer Sky Ferreira played a hometown benefit for the David Lynch Foundation at last night (7/9) at Music Hall of Williamsburg, which is an intimate location for her at this point, and needless to say, sold out. Sky played most of her 2013 debut album, Night Time, My Time, as well as a few favorites from the Ghost EP like the Dev Hynes/Ariel Rechtshaid collab, "Everything Is Embarrassing." Sky's boyfriend Zachary Cole Smith's band DIIV was added as a last-minute opener, and they played some new stuff (presumably from their upcoming sophomore album) as well as a psychedelic cover of Bob Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone." There were a few DJs there for the night too, including Vito Roccoforte of The Rapture. Pictures of the show are in this post.
DIIV also have two sold out headlining shows at MHOW happening tonight (7/10) and Friday (7/11). Both are with LODRO and Regal Degal.

DIIV @ Baby's All Right on NYE (more by Amanda Hatfield)
As mentioned, DIIV will be testing out new material on tour next month with LODRO and Regal Degal along for the ride. That trek was to kick off in NYC at Music Hall of Williamsburg on July 11 but as that show has now sold out, they've added a second MHOW show happening the day before (7/10) with the same openers. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (6/6) at noon with an AmEx presale starting Wednesday (6/4) at noon.

It's been two years since DIIV released their debut album, Oshin. With eyes on its follow-up, Cole and the rest of the band will be testing out new material on a July tour of the East Coast and Midwest. That tour kicks off in NYC at Music Hall of Williamsburg on July 11 with Lodro and Regal Deagal. Tickets for MHOW go on sale Thursday (5/22) at noon, with an AmEx presale beginning Wednesday (5/21) at noon.

Raveonettes / Blonde Redhead / DIIV @ Desert Daze 4/26/2014
Speaking of Deap Vally, the female rock duo had a wonderful set filled with dancing, child fans and Moon Block Party members on stage to dance and back them up on vocals. These ladies seemed comfortable in the desert air probably due to the fact that their first show ever was at the desert venue of Pappy and Harriet's. The only real hiccup for Deap Vally was that right as they were getting ready to play, guitarist Lindsey Troy had to use the Porta-Potti and couldn't find her setlist. Otherwise, most band's had smooth sailing, though Autolux started a half hour late due to technical difficulties with its keyboard, resulting in Autolux guitarist Greg Edwards cutting into his wife Raveonettes singer/bassist Sharin Foo's set. - [CMJ]The Desert Daze festival began in 2012 as an alternative to Coachella but has come into its own since, mixing international acts and California local artists. This was the second year in a row for it to be at Sunset Ranch in Oasis, California and the one-day event (4/26) featured Blonde Redhead, DIIV, The Raveonettes, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Deap Vally, Autolux, Cosmonauts, and many more. As you probably know by now, Brooklyn DIY venue 285 Kent is closed for good. As the venue was hosting its final shows, Pitchfork filmed a documentary about the venue called "RIP 285 Kent." The description reads:
The film features interviews with the personalities that pushed 285 forward, including founder Todd P., booker/manager Ric Leichtung, and managers Kaitlin Browne and Siobhan McDonald, among others. It also includes discussion with local bookers Edan Wilbur, John Jacobson, John Barclay, and Pitchfork photographer Erez Avissar, plus interview and performance footage from Deafheaven, Fucked Up, DIIV, Dan Deacon, Pictureplane, Lodro, Wolf Eyes, DUST, and more.Check it out below...

Nothing, who we just caught at SXSW, play NYC tonight (3/20) at Saint Vitus which is totally sold out, but it won't be long before you have another chance to catch the Philly shoegazers in NYC. They'll return for a FREE Converse Rubber Tracks Live show at Glasslands on April 4, opening for local faves DIIV. The show is free but you do need tickets, which go on "sale" today (3/20) at noon.
At the moment it's DIIV's only Northeast show before they cross the country for a west coast tour. All of their dates, and all other Nothing dates, are listed below...

A concert series called Painted BLACK is returning to NYC and will feature three shows at Irving Plaza. Presented by NYC's MATTE Projects, Painted BLACK "is an exploration of a color and a lifestyle through a live experience. In the pursuit of this, the musical acts will be paired with visual artists, stage builders, sculptors, fashion designers, and filmmakers, creating unique pieces to be debuted at the series."
The first show, which coincides with Fashion Week, happens on February 13 and features electronic musicians Klangkarussell (DJ), Thomas Azier (live), and Stefan Biniak (DJ). Tickets for that one are on sale now.
The second one is more indie-rock oriented, featuring live sets by DIIV and Guards, plus a DJ set by Twin Shadow. Tickets for that one are on sale now.

Brooklyn DIY venue 285 Kent officially closed its doors for good after last night's show (1/19), the last of four epic final shows that the venue hosted. First was last weekend's Laurel Halo / Autre Ne Veut / etc show, and this past weekend were the final three: Dan Deacon/etc on Friday, Deafheaven/etc on Saturday, and last night's with Fucked Up, DIIV, White Lung, Guardian Alien and LODRO.
The show was a great way for the venue to go out -- celebratory, but also representing what the venue was always about, and why it will be so sorely missed. Three local bands who have called the venue home multiple times in its three-year existence (with the bands they were in last night as well as other various projects), returned to bid it farewell -- DIIV, Guardian Alien, and LODRO. But in addition to being a vital part of Brooklyn's local scene, 285 has also been a spot for bigger out of town bands to get crazier, sweatier, and more intimate with their fans while they were in town for other shows. Fucked Up did just that in 2011 when they played 285 after opening for Dinosaur Jr. at Terminal 5, so they were warmly welcomed back, and their Canada neighbors White Lung (who could probably headline the venue at this point) fit the spirit of the bill perfectly too.

Anyone who's seen Fucked Up knows Damien Abraham likes to talk on stage, and last night he dedicated much of that to commemorating 285 Kent. "Of all the amazing venues we've played, this is by far the fucking coolest," he said at one point. He also encouraged the crowd saying you could do any of this, start a venue, form a band, book shows, do it yourself. Maybe in 2014 the possibilities of DIY seem more obvious than the days of Black Flag or something, but it's still inspiring to hear a band you look up to break down the fan/band/industry barriers and preach that to their fans. Maybe a 15 year old was there last night and is already forming his or her first band. 285 Kent's shows are all ages shows.

Most of my good memories about 285 Kent involve the fact that you felt like you could have fun there, not just be part of a group of people standing around. I still scratch my head a bit at how mosh pits ever break out to DIIV at any show, but at 285 they always seem to, and it actually does feel right. Especially last night, when they were sandwiched between the ferocious punk of White Lung and Fucked Up.
White Lung's sets rarely cross the 20-minute mark, but last night's felt especially short (possibly shortened by their broken kick pedal) yet just as wild as usual. Their newer songs sound great, and when they played material off of Sorry, the crowd truly lost it. Fucked Up's set raged as always too. And though you can usually see through it when a band pretends they're doing an unplanned encore, it seemed legitimately spontaneous when Fucked Up discussed things on stage for a bit and then got the crowd rowdier than they'd been all night for the last-ever song played at 285 Kent, a cover of "Blitzkrieg Bop." Internet hate for all the 285 Kent commemoration often drops the line, "It's not CBGB," but hey, at least we went out with a Ramones song.

As you may have heard, Brooklyn DIY venue 285 Kent is closing, but they're going out with a bang. It was just announced that Pitchfork, Ad Hoc, and Todd P will be presenting the venue's final shows which include Fucked Up, DIIV, White Lung, Laurel Halo, Autre Ne Veut, Dan Deacon and others, plus a number of special guests playing shows there this month. Tickets for all four of the incredibly stacked lineups are on sale now.

Dev Hynes / DIIV / Potty Mouth @ Baby's All Right 12/31/2013
Attending a show might not be the worst way to spend New Year's Eve in NYC, but there's no escaping wasted revelers. The New Years Eve DIIV, Nothing, Ratking, Potty Mouth and LODRO show at Baby's All Right was packed to the brim with party people by the time DIIV took the stage to countdown to midnight (with bubbly), and subsequently delivered an hour-long set which was peppered with new material as well as a cover of Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone."
I didn't catch LORDO's set that kicked off the night, but Potty Mouth sounded good with their indie/punk jams and, as usual, Nothing was loud as hell. (Perfect Pussy were also originally supposed to play but ended up playing at Acheron instead.) It's a shame most people dipped out before Manhattan rap trio Ratking took the stage at 1AM, because those three teenagers packed a serious punch with their angry, energetic performance. The place filled back up at 2AM, though, for a surprise performance from Blood Orange's Dev Hynes who played a set exclusively made up of songs left over from his Cupid Deluxe sessions. Perfect Pussy at NYU, 2013 (more by Amanda Hatfield)
We mentioned a few weeks ago that Syracuse-based noise punkers Perfect Pussy were slated to play a New Year's Eve party at Baby's All Right, along with DIIV, Nothing, Potty Mouth and Ratking. For reasons unknown (the band hasn't issued a statement), they've dropped off the Baby's bill, and instead hopped aboard the lineup for the previously mentioned NYE party at Acheron, which features No Statik, Nomad, Grudges, La Misma and Creeping Dose. Perfect Pussy took a lineup hit as part of the switch; they're billed fourth to last at the Acheron as opposed to second to last at Baby's All Right, but they arguably fit into Ach's lineup a little better.

More artists have now been announced and the lineup is looking pretty impressive: reverby indie rockers DIIV, heavy shoegazers Nothing, punky indie rockers Potty Mouth, and still more TBA. Maria Sherman is DJing. Tickets for the show are on sale now, and will include a coconut champagne toast and some sort of open bar (details TBA).

Rough Trade NYC (more by Amanda Hatfield)
We just mentioned that Rough Trade's live shows are "on hold for a while" due to sound issues at the venue, and while some (like tonight's Tourist show) are being moved, others, like Andrew Bird (12/6) and DIIV (12/7), The Stepkids (12/9), Lucius (12/10) and Au Revoir Simone (12/17) have unfortunately been cancelled. Refunds are available at the point of purchase.
Other updates via Rough Trade's Twitter: Childish Gambino's show on Sunday, 12/8 at 6PM has been moved to Music Hall of Williamsburg but you still need to buy a copy of his new CD at the store that day to get a wristband.
Allah Las (12/6), Langhorne Slim / Felice Bros (12/11), and Cults (12/18) have been postponed. Stay tuned for updates on where those shows end up.

"Hardcore Lørd" at Brooklyn Rock Lottery 2012 (more by Greg Cristman)
The fourth annual Brooklyn Rock Lottery, which happens on 12/7 at Knitting Factory and randomly puts various members of different bands into new bands for just that day, has expanded upon the previously announced list of participants. Lineup additions include members of Quicksand, Afghan Whigs, DIIV, A Place to Bury Strangers, Dresden Dolls, Antibalas, Sannhet and more. There's still five more artists TBA and one "Very Special Guest," who, like everyone else, will be suject to the following:
The premise is simple, but effective. Twenty-five hand picked musicians meet at 10:00AM at the evenings performance venue. These volunteers are organized into five groups through a lottery-based chance selection. The five separate groups are then released to practice at different locations. The musicians have twelve hours to create a band name and three to five songs (with a one cover-song limit). The groups will then perform what they have created that evening in front of a waiting audience.Previously announced participants include members of The Make-Up/Nation of Ulysses, Cave In, Oneida, Rainer Maria, and more. Full lineup, as it currently stands, below.
Tickets for the Rock Lottery are on sale now, and all proceeds go to the Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls, a non-profit music and mentoring program that empowers girls and women through music education. There will also be a raffle at the Rock Lottery giving away some not-too-shabby swag including first class tickets from Delta and badges to next year's Northside Festival. As discussed, Sannhet, whose drummer Christopher Todd is participating in this year's Rock Lottery, just put out a new EP titled Lions Eye. If you haven't heard it yet, you can stream it below.
A Place to Bury Strangers's Oliver Ackerman is also participating, and as discussed, his band is scheduled to play Brooklyn Night Bazaar on Friday, November 29 with Dawn of Midi, Pontiak and Woodsman, so check that out if you want to get your grub on and catch a free show or if you need an activity to get you out of your Thanksgiving food coma.

As you may know, My Bloody Valentine are in town for two NYC shows, their first since 2009 and they're the last ones of their 2013 world tour before (supposedly) going back into the studio record an EP and work on some vinyl reissues. Tonight's show (11/11) is with Australia's Dumb Numbers who feature Dinosaur Jr's Murph on drums and who snuck in a surprise show last night at The Flat; Tuesday's show (11/12) will be opened by DIIV. Tickets are still available for both shows. But if you'd like to go for free we're giving a pair away to each show. Details on how to enter are below.

Honestly, just in front of the sound guy I guess. (Laughs.) It just depends on the venue, really. A lot of venues the desk is in the back, and the "sweet spot" is about ten feet in front of that. As you may know, record store/cafe/venue Rough Trade NYC is set to open November 25 in Williamsburg. The venue part is 21+ and will be a mix of free and ticketed, evening and daytime. The initial schedule of ticketed, evening shows has just been released and looks like this:

Cat Power / Sky Ferreira at Elliott Smith tribute (more by Amanda Hatfield)
As you may have heard, on the tenth anniversary of Elliott Smith's death (10/21), a tribute show went down at Glasslands in Brooklyn with a number of musicians, including Cat Power, Zachary Cole Smith (DIIV), Sky Ferreira, Yoni Wolf (Why?), The Low Anthem, Luke Temple, Marissa Nadler, Aaron Pfenning, Sadie Dupuis (Speedy Ortiz), and more. We already posted pictures, the setlist, and a fan video from the show, and now there's professional video of the show, courtesy of The Bomber Jacket (one of the show presenters). They're planning on releasing the audio from the show as well ("hopefully by Christmas"), and all proceeds from that release will benefit the Elliott Smith Memorial Fund.

Dom in his DOM days, Brooklyn Night Bazaar 2011 (more by Erik Erikson)
I chose the name Kiss 1O8 after Kiss 108 FM, a pop radio station I used to listen to as a kid. That and 108 is a sacred number in some cultures, as it represents one, nothing and everything. When I hear 'Stargate,' I don't immediately think of the '90s sci-fi soap, I think of two bald men from Norway. To be honest, I don't really care what Ryan Seacrest or anybody else thinks about it.The name change also marks a radical shift in musical styles, saying Kiss 1O8 is "more like Streets of Rage versus S Club 7, on some maximalist level." You'll be able to hear that for yourself when Dom releases Kiss 1O8's debut, HYPERFANTASY XL LP, on Halloween (10/31). You can stream a track from it below.
There's a listening party for the record happening before that at Le Poisson Rouge on October 29 featuring DJ sets from Kiss 1O8, Pictureplane, Ollie Sabin (Unicorn Kid), Devin Perez (DIIV), John Rambo and "Super Secret Guest TBA." The listening party is free but you do need to RSVP by sending an email to RSVP@newtownradio.com.

Cat Power / Cole & Sky
[Sadie] Dupuis delivered the night's heaviest alt-rock blast, leading a Nirvana-like performance of "Abused" by dialing up the track's soft-loud-soft dynamics. [Marissa] Nadler offered a mesmerizing lullaby with the gentle strums of "Pitseleh." [Yoni] Wolf played three tracks solo on piano, including "Angeles" and "Say Yes," adding his own spin lyrically and musically, something a "chord guy" like Smith would appreciate, Wolf joked.On the tenth anniversary of Elliott Smith's death (10/21), a number of musicians gathered at Brooklyn venue Glasslands for a tribute show. Cat Power soon walked onstage and raised a glass from behind the piano -- "cheers to Elliott," she said. She played a solo version of her own tune, the haunting "Names," from 2003's You Are Free, before her band joined for a jazz/R&B-flecked "Between the Bars," which hit with extra punch due to Marshall's own history of alcohol abuse and mental illness.
She handed out knit caps, like those Smith so often wore (Marshall sported a yellow-gold beanie over her bleached blonde hair all night), and closed with From a Basement on the Hill's "Pretty (Ugly Before)." Ferreira joined Marshall onstage, and the two traded verses and invited the crowd to join -- "Fucking sing it if you know it!" shouted Marshall -- on the repeated outro: "I was so ugly before didn't know what to do." The jam-packed audience inside the DIY venue all sang in hushed tones together, in unison. [Rolling Stone]
For Cat Power, this show was ahead of her upcoming solo tour which brings her back to NYC for two shows on November 14 at Brooklyn Masonic Temple (early and late). The early show is sold out but tickets for the late show are still available.
Sadie Dupuis played this just after her band Speedy Ortiz wrapped up a number of CMJ shows, including our Friday party. Speedy Ortiz returns to NYC tonight (10/23) at The Flat for a Mishka show with J Mascis (of Dinosaur Jr). It's an afterparty for the debut of Mishka's new Dinosaur Jr line, which happens at their store (and J will be there doing an in-store signing).

Extreme sport junkie, Music Academy presenter, sponsor of cool Sound Select shows, magazine publisher and beverage maker Red Bull has put together a list of the 30 best guitarists under 30. In the two-part rundown, the list covers some territory, lumping Pallbearer's Brett Campbell, Liturgy's Hunter Hunt Hendrix, Mac Demarco, Danielle Haim, Ben Greenberg of The Men, Sadie Dupuis of Speedy Ortiz, Marissa Paternoster of Screaming Females and Fun guitarist and Lena Dunham-dater Jack Antonoff onto the list. Music of the heavier persuasion was decently represented, and Castevet's Andrew Hock made the cut. You can catch him in action with Castevet at an Invisible Oranges sponsored show on October 25 at Union Pool with Churchburn, Oneirogen and Vorde. Also on the list, as a pair, are Inter Arma riff monsters Trey Dalton and Steven Russell. Inter Arma will be back in NYC soon to play Saint Vitus on October 30 with Black Tusk, Descender and No Way.
Ty Segall, who also made the list, will be here next weekend (but on drums) with his band Fuzz, playing a sold out show at Mercury Lounge on 10/12 with CCR Headcleaner. (There is also a show with "Buzz" and "DDT Shampoo" at Death by Audio on 10/13).

Like the four Elliott Smith tribute shows that took place in August to honor the songwriting legend in the ten-year anniversary of his death, another will happen in NYC on the actual day of the anniversary, October 21. The tribute show happens at Glasslands and includes some pretty great musicians like Cat Power, DIIV's Zachary Cole Smith with Sky Ferreira, Yoni Wolf (of Why?), The Low Anthem, Luke Temple, Marissa Nadler, Aaron Pfenning (of Rewards, ex-Chairlift), Sadie Dupuis (of Speedy Ortiz), Adam Schatz, The Perennials and Tereu Tereu.
$50 tickets for the show are on sale now, and some of the proceeds will benefit Elliott Smith Memorial Fund. That fund benefits Outside In and Free Arts for Abused Children, and there's also an IndieGogo campaign raising money for Outside In that includes rewards related to the Glasslands show:
