DEP @ MHOW, 4/27/2013

Converse Rubber Tracks Live returned on Saturday at Music Hall of Williamsburg (4/27), snagging strobe-loving math-core greats The Dillinger Escape Plan along with an assist from The Faceless, Royal Thunder and locals Primitive Weapons. The show was one stop on their current tour, which will roll through North American through most of next month.
The Dillinger Escape Plan are readying One of Us is the Killer for their new home Party Smasher/Sumerian. The band opened the MHoW set with the new track "Prancer" from the new LP. Head below for the rest of the setlist, as well as more photos from MHWW.

The band just released a video for the new track "When I Lost My Bet" and you can check that out below.

Dillinger Escape Plan at Terminal 5 (more by Greg Cristman)

Good news, bad news, good news. Let's start with the bad and then go to the good.
The RSVP for the Dillinger Escape Plan show at Music Hall of Williamsburg on April 27 with The Faceless and Royal Thunder has run dry. That said, we have a pair to giveaway to a lucky individual, details on how to get into this Converse Rubber Tracks event are below.
In addition, DEP has announced that they will headline the Summer Slaughter festival for 2013, snagging support from Animals As Leaders, Periphery, Norma Jean, Cattle Decapitation, The Ocean, Revocation, AEON, Rings of Saturn and Thy Art is Murder. Though dates as a whole have yet to be revealed, look for that lineup to play House of Blues in Los Angeles on July 20 and Best Buy Theater in NYC on August 7. Tickets for the latter go on sale April 19 at noon.
Contest details and song streams are below.

The Dillinger Escape Plan have released a new track, "Prancer," from the band's forthcoming LP One of Us is the Killer. Mixing groovy sections, melodic clean passages and that dot-dot-dash math that the New Jersey crew is known for, the new track fits right at home with their previous work. Check out "Prancer" below.
As mentioned, DEP is on the road in April and will play Music Hall of Williamsburg on April 27 with The Faceless, Royal Thunder (who play the IO stage during our Friday day party this week) and DJ Fred Pessaro. Entry is FREE, details are forthcoming.

As discussed, The Dillinger Escape Plan have set aside a show for NYC in late April in celebration of One of Us is the Killer, the band's new LP (art above). But now comes word that said tour has expanded by leaps and bounds, adding multiple dates and support from The Faceless and Royal Thunder. Look for Primitive Weapons to provide the assist for the Brooklyn show at Music Hall of Williamsburg on April 27, which will also feature between set DJing by yours truly (Fred Pessaro). This Converse Rubber Tracks Live show is FREE and open to the public with RSVP (forthcoming).
A list of all tour dates for DEP, The Faceless and Royal Thunder is below.

We already knew about their appearance at New England Metal & Hardcore Fest, but now The Dillinger Escape Plan have released more dates in celebration of their new LP One of Us is the Killer, due on Sumerian in May. Though details on a full-scale worldwide tour assault remain to be seen, look for Dillinger Escape Plan to cherry-pick major cities across the US including a stop in Brooklyn for a venue TBA show on April 27. Details forthwith, but until then check out all known dates as well as some classic DEP below.

Barbara Streisand played her first of two, and first-ever Brooklyn show at the Barclays Center last night. Those in attendance missed the live Vice President debate, but still got a taste of politics at the show:
"I love Big Bird and I hope no one tells Romney how to get to Sesame Street ... or to Pennsylvania Avenue," cracked Streisand, according to the Huffington Post.Babs plays the new venue, that only Jay-Z played before her, again Saturday night.Streisand also said of Romney: "He's a good actor. [He's] a chameleon. It's great."
Meanwhile: "Barclays Center VIP Lounge Issued Health Violation For Lack Of Toilet Paper."

While Coke Bust/Masakari/Sick Fix/Grudges was tearing down Acheron on 11/19, a much larger show was brewing at Terminal 5 featuring Mastodon, Dillinger Escape Plan and Red Fang as part of the trio's tour together. Mastodon's set covered their entire recorded output, including newer tracks like "Curl of The Burl" all the way to earlier favorites like "March of The Fire Ants" and, according to the set-list, "Iron Tush" (aka "Iron Tusk").
The sold-out show also featured an appearance from original DEP vocalist Dimitri Minkanakis (now a member of Argonauts) who joined the band on stage for performances of "Sunshine The Werewolf" and the classic "43% Burnt". Video of that is below.
While Argonauts have no upcoming dates, Brett of Argonauts will play Public Assembly on 12/14 with his other project East of The Wall. They'll be joined by Tournament (who play an Acheron benefit tonight with Hull/Naam), Family, and Fashion Week. The band is finishing up their US tour post-the release of their latest LP The Apologist.

Black Star on Colbert

Big night for music on late night TV last night (and lately in general). You may have heard that Portishead played their first TV appearance in 13 years on Jimmy Fallon last night. Black Star, as promised, also played a new song "Fix Up" on The Colbert Report (but not at Irving Plaza, or the rest of their tour for that matter). Mastodon performed "Curl of The Burl" last night on David Letterman. Video of the Mastodon and Black Star (aka Talib Kweli and Yasiin Bey) performances, as well as the hip hop group's interview with Stephen Colbert is below.
Speaking of new music by Talib Kweli, his other project Idle Warship has a new album coming. Check out one of the new tracks at Rolling Stone. See them live Saturday in Brooklyn, or at one of the other dates listed below.
Reminder: Mastodon's tour hits Terminal 5 with Dillinger Escape Plan and Red Fang on 11/19. Tickets are still available.
Meanwhile, as previously mentioned, former Dillinger Escape Plan vocalist Dimitri Minkanakis's band Argonauts (with Dave Witte & John Adubato of Burnt By The Sun, Brett Bamberger of East of The Wall) will play their debut NYC show at ABC No Rio on Saturday (10/8). They'll be joined by Alkahest, Thou, and The Body.
As also mentioned, Jeff the Brotherhood, now bros with Jack White, play Late Night with Jimmy Fallon tonight (10/6).

Mastodon at MSG (more by Matthew Eisman)

With their new LP The Hunter on deck (due 9/27), Mastodon will team up with The Dillinger Escape Plan and Red Fang for a string of US dates in late October and on into December. The dates include a stop at Terminal 5 on November 19th. Tickets go on sale on Friday 9/16 at noon, OR take advantage of a "Ticket and CD Download Offer" which kicks off at 10AM TOMORROW (9/13). Details on that offer are forthcoming.
Full tour schedule is below, along with videos from the forthcoming The Hunter LP.

Crosses is a new crew that features Shaun Lopez of FAR and Chino Moreno of Deftones, and the trio (Chuck Doom rounds it out) have released a new EP for download. Get it for the price of your email address. Though the pedigree of this might indicate something on the heavy side, Crosses definitely resembles Chino's Team Sleep or with moments of (gulp) witch house present. No word on what is next for the trio, but one thing is for sure, Ritualz, AKA †‡†, is not pleased. He tweeted "only thing i can think of right now is that if you have a blog post about that fat fuck stealing my shit to let people know please" and "woke up to attacks by deftones fans. basically they're mad because i came up with the crosses first and they hate everything not deftones?" No word on a response from Chino
Meanwhile, Dave Witte has gathered up an impressive crew of musicians for his latest project Argonauts. Witte will join The Dillinger Escape Plan vocalist Dimitri Minkanakis, East of the Wall bassist Brett Bamburger, and fellow Burnt By The Sun member John Adubato. Though the band has yet to post a new song (they will in the near future according to a recent Facebook post), they are scheduled to play the Gwar-B-Q in Richmond, VA on September 17th. There they'll join Gwar (duh), Darkest Hour, Kepone, Mensrea, DBX, Groundscore, Battlemaster, White Cross, The Occultist and Bloody Crackdown as part of the day-long affair.

Psychic Limb at Cake Shop, the aftermath (more by Jason House)

Psychic Limb has a busy weekend in a couple weeks, as the band has been added to a pair of notable NYC shows. The first will go down at the previously discussed Coliseum/Gods & Queens date at Public Assembly, which also recently added Rise & Fall (their only NYC appearance) and Masakari (who'll also play ABC No Rio with Black Kites & Grudges that afternoon). $12 gets you in the door and tickets are on sale. The show is one of two dates scheduled for Coliseum, who'll also join The Austerity Program at Union Pool the next night (5/15, tickets).
Then the following day, Psychic Limb will join another Psychic band, The Psychic Paramount, in supporting The Dillinger Escape Plan at Music Hall of Williamsburg on May 15th (tickets). The MHOW show is a one off solo show for DEP, who is currently playing dates with the Deftones and will hit Best Buy Theater for a pair of sold-out nights (on 5/13, 5/14). The Psychic Paramount will hit the road with Disappears in July.
All of the Psychic Limb shows are in celebration of their new LP, Queens, which is currently up for preorder via Clairvoyant Recordings.... my own new record label. Recorded by Colin Marston (Krallice, Dysrhythmia, etc), the LP, the label's first release, is limited to 500 copies with the first 100 coming on opaque yellow and the remainder on black. Psychic Limb sold small runs of their LP at recent shows with Nails and Unbroken/Jesuit.
Rise & Fall will enter God City Studios on Sunday, 5/1 to record a new LP with Kurt Ballou. No word on the details behind the LP, but we'll keep you posted.
Masakari recently released the Sleep/Rot 7", which is available via Halo of Flies Records. The band released their LP The Prophet Feeds via Southern Lord last year.
All tour dates and some video is below.

Dillinger Escape Plan at The Studio at Webster Hall (more by Justina Villanueva)

Both Deftones and The Dillinger Escape Plan shows at Best Buy Theater (5/13 & 14) are completely sold out, but the technical hardcore band has added a headlining NYC date happening the same week. It's May 15th at Music Hall of Williamsburg. Tickets go on sale Friday at noon (4/8). Updated tour dates below.
Meanwhile, DEP vocalist Greg Puciato has revealed that he is currently working on a project with Max Cavalera (Cavalera Conspiracy, ex-Sepultura):
Just came back from Phoenix. Max Cav and myself are both in possession of fifteen songs that nobody else has. Dark.Look for that project in the near future. Meanwhile both Cavalera Conspiracy AND Sepultura (which contains none of the Cavaleras) are headed to the NYC area. Cavalera Conspiracy will play Irving Plaza on 5/10 (tickets) and Sepultura will play Gramercy on April 25 with Bonded in Blood, Neuraxis, Keep of Kallesin, Hate, and Belphegor (tickets). All tour dates below...

Deftones at MSG (more by Matthew Eisman)

It's official! Deftones and The Dillinger Escape Plan will team up for a North American tour that hits NJ's Starland Ballroom on 5/11 and Best Buy Theater in NYC on 5/13 & 5/14. Tickets for Starland Ballroom go on sale 1/8 at noon, while tickets for 5/13 and 5/14 go on AMEX presale at 10AM today (1/6) with regular sale beginning on 1/8 at noon. All dates are also on presale now and listed below.
In related news, The Dillinger Escape Plan recently showed up on the 2010 Pitchfork Readers Poll as the 38th best LP of the year, despite very little coverage of the band by the site. As a matter of fact, The Dillinger Escape Plan received the highest percentage of #1 votes (73% of people that voted Dillinger, voted them #1), smashing Kanye West's #2 ranking (39%). So how did that happen? DEP campaigned for it.

"An aggregate 225,000 people bought tickets to see a [Coachella] roster headlined by Jay-Z, Muse and Gorillaz during the April 16-18 event at the Empire Polo Grounds in Indio. The 2010 edition of Coachella actually began excactly one week ago today, and we already posted full picture sets from: DAY ONE, DAY TWO and DAY THREE. Now here is one last group that contains unposted outtakes from all three...The previous attendance record was set in 2007, when the headliners included a reunited Rage Against the Machine. Final figures are still being tallied, but AEG Live CEO Randy Phillips said the gross will exceed $20 million.
Phillips said the future looked bleak for AEG Live's nascent All Points West festival, which took place in 2008 and 2009 across the Hudson River from lower Manhattan at Liberty State Park in Jersey City, N.J.
"We're probably going to kill it," said Phillips. "As beautiful as (the site) is, it's very hard to get New Yorkers to cross that river. All Points West is an experiment that just didn't work." [Reuters]

Jay-Z, Beyonce & Johnny Rotten

This year, the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival reveals that tattoos are more ubiquitous among social scenes than ever before. A walking museum of quotes and legendary faces from Jesus to Michael Jackson decorates the backs, shoulders, calves and fingers of people fashionably reliving their favorite historical decades at this heat-stroke inducing music marathon.
I thought Wale didn't show up, but later found out that he showed up late. Baroness demonstrated the art of rocking out at least three to five times before each song reached a satisfied climax. Metal can be a real turn on, especially surrounded by sweaty good-looking people. Deer Tick performed an R+B version of "Ashamed" followed by John McCauley caressing his nipples. LA band Iglu and Hartly had enthusiasm, but is this Mickey Avalon without the drugs and prostitutes? Which leaves what? Sleigh Bells began with a booty melting bass line palpable from the VIP section across the field, soon overtaken by hipster hop metal pop for people that like beaches and children. The Avett Brothers made an exciting second Coachella appearance on the Outdoor Stage. Two years ago, the band played Sunday gospel time, all manners and simplicity, but the Bros returned with a full band, and a few thousand people singing every word, stomping to the banjo, and hugging during the sweet parts. The banjo will take over America. Just wait. Country music is infiltrating avant-garde and above ground indie worlds alike.
Standing midway between the big stages, just a few feet from yet another girl with the words "Have u seen my friend Molly?" scrawled on her back, the Avett Brothers' heart-wrenching "January Wedding" got a reggaeton remix from Calle 13 booming on the Main Stage. This Puerto Rican dancefloor marvel used a tea kettle for a mic effect, and taught the audience to say "No me jodas las pelotas" against negativity ("Don't fuck my balls"). Speaking of balls, Yeasayer's crowd went absolutely nuts screaming, but the guys barely seemed aware, transported as they were to some space station cloud. The harmonies rocked like angelic aliens-but, smile, guys. Hockey demonstrated a genuine interest in moving indie rock standards forward, especially attracting the PG-13 festival contingency. M. ward raspy singing "Roll Over Beethoven" during She & Him's set delivered tingly shivers, but Zooey Deschanel's approach to "I Put A Spell On You" did not crumble souls. Her jazzy voice and bouncy energy otherwise made for a good time that elicited repetitive shouts of "I Love You!" from the first row.
Gil Scott-Heron

Music should be at least marginally weird or infinitely classic, but Tom Morello's band, Street Sweeper Social Club, brings nothing new to either category and so seems a waste of great musicians. Get weird or the future will never arrive. That being said, the musicians Coachella digs up from history often present the most exciting moments. Rock steady ska pioneers The Specials sent a crispy, warm message to Rudy that every witness appreciated immensely, but it was outrageous that barely any photographers showed up for Gil Scott-Heron's smooth, soulful set [editor's note: ours did!]. The man is partly responsible for getting Martin Luther King, Jr. a holiday, godfathered hip hop, and that doesn't merit attention? A large crowd attended his every word, but the photos won't show it. Later on, James Murphy screamed Gil Scott-Heron's name during "Losing My Edge" as if it were the name of God. Glad he gets it. LCD Soundsystem's first single in 2002, "Losing My Edge" is a historical document worth preserving for the ages, an essence that speaks to what Coachella seems bent on capturing and rewriting every year. Echo & The Bunnymen rode the high-hat zealously-as many have copied since-giving chapped lips sugar kisses. Public Image, Ltd., could not take Jay-Z's audience away from him nor unglue Fever Ray fans from Karin Dreijer Andersson's encompassing fog spell, but I'll be damned if PiL wasn't the best show all day. John Lydon's hair stood on edge and he rolled his rrrr's heroically. His gang of old men put the good junk in post-punk.
As this first 12 hour music summary comes to a close, a few acts remain worth giving a hoot about. Grizzly Bear's hypnotic power hardly needs mentioning and Vampire Weekend knows you love "Horchata." New cool La Roux magnetizes with a disco flavor that Anita Ward might approve. As hoped, Little Dragon's gentle fire breathing soul pop fronted by Yukimi's sexy voice and adorable stage presence comes in as Friday's second favorite. The music's weird enough, bent on discovering surprises. One-woman band Imogen Heap, as well, is the queen of surprises. She moves around her instruments, looping this and dubbing that as if casually mixing a magic potion or prepping a sandwich. Jay-Z's "On To The Next One" is an appropriate theme song for the attention span needed to get your money's worth at Coachella. And then Beyonce came out. We all bowed down before her short shorts.
Them Crooked Vultures, Passion Pit, Dillinger Escape Plan, Yo Gabba Gabba, and The Whitest Boy Alive also played sets on Friday. The Cribs were among those who could not. Coachella continues for a second day today/Saturday (Record Store Day). More pictures and videos and stuff from the first day, below...

Dillinger, moving in speeds unfathomable by the naked eye

The Dillinger Escape Plan played Irving Plaza as part of an ongoing tour to promote Option: Paralysis, their new LP due out this week on Season of Mist. Joined by DC's Darkest Hour, the tech-y Animals as Leaders, and the atrocious iwrestledabearonce, the band played a set that varied across their entire career to the backdrop of flashing coordinated LEDs. Both awesome and an eyesore, it went along with the band's blitzkreig set and malfunctioning computer aesthetic (maybe they got some tips from their friend Trent Reznor)... Incredible set from these greats.
Check out the video for DEP's "Farewell Mona Lisa", as well as some pics of DEP and Darkest Hour (Samantha missed the others) below...

The Cassettes

The Cassettes- a four-piece self-proclaimed "steampunk" stompy rootsy rock n' roll band from Washington, D.C. [was] started by Frodus frontman Shelby Cinca as a solace from his post-punk screaming endeavors. They released a previous album called 'Neath The Pale Moon on Buddyhead Records (California) and Rogue Records (Australia), and have shared the stage with the likes of Brendan Benson, Bishop Allen, Rilo Kiley, Shout Out Louds, These United States, Dead Meadow and Benjy Feree, just to name a few.... The band finished up their follow-up to 'Neath The Pale Moon: a scorching steam-rock n' roll-punk album entitled Countach, [which] quickly sold out... and made some local waves in the Washington, DC area with the release. ...By 2009, ...the group was left in limbo as the members went on to focus on other projects (like a reformed Frodus)The Cassettes have a new album of sorts, Writing Analog Letters, streaming now with a pair of tracks available for download above. This collection of previously unreleased material, which features a cover of the Dillinger Escape Plan classic "43% Burnt" with Mike Schliebaum of Darkest Hour, was originally planned for a double LP version of 'Neath The Pale Moon but later aborted in favor of a slimmed down version. Pick up a copy of the LP (and all of their others) through the band directly.
Speaking of Dillinger Escape Plan, the band will kick off a tour at Irving Plaza in NYC TONIGHT (3/11) with Darkest Hour. The tour is in celebration of Option: Paralysis (due later this month) and it includes shows during SxSW. Tickets for Irving are still available.

"Throughout 2007, Lady Gaga collaborated with performance artist Lady Starlight, who helped her create her onstage fashions. The pair began playing gigs at downtown club venues like the Mercury Lounge, The Bitter End, and the Rockwood Music Hall, with their live performance art piece known as "Lady Gaga and the Starlight Revue". Billed as "The Ultimate Pop Burlesque Rockshow", their act was a low-fi tribute to 1970s variety acts. In August 2007, Gaga and Starlight were invited to play at the American music festival Lollapalooza. The show was critically acclaimed, and their performance received highly positive reviews. Having initially focused on avant-garde, and electronic dance music, Gaga found her musical niche when she began to incorporate pop melodies and the vintage glam rock of David Bowie and Queen into the mix." Dark Castle @ Union Pool (more by Sam Marble)

In recent months, the upswing in metal coverage on BV has rendered the moniker "Week In Metal" unnecessary. Small blurbs in "WIM" (as we call it around here) about Dark Castle have given way to photosets from their shows and posting of tour dates as they happen. Chalk it up to progress.
Starting this week, we will introduce a bit of a new direction for the old Week In Metal column, but without straying too far from the previous. The new column, entitled Short Wave Warfare, will scale back a bit, focusing on news that falls below the radar as well as shining a spotlight on new bands and upcoming shows in the NYC area. It won't be weekly. I hope you enjoy it.
Stay tuned for more upcoming shows in addition to Coalesce at Europa, Magrudergrind at Cake Shop, and The Hope Conspiracy at Union Pool, as well as a year-end best of 2009 post from myself and some of my favorite artists.
Thanks for reading. News on Portal, Oxbow, Master's Hammer, a collaboration between sunn O))) and Ulver, a new Haiyaino Daisuki & Gridlink, Amenra, Earthride, Kreator, Mammoth Grinder and so much more as (the new) Short Wave Warfare continues below....
