Le1f at The Studio at Webster Hall in 2012 (more by Julie Schabel)
Le1f

It's been a little while since we've gotten a show from NYC rapper Le1f, who plays locally a lot, but that will change this Friday (2/8) at Santos Party House, where Le1f will play Frankie Sharp's Friday with DJ Carlos Jadraque, DJ Nita, DICAP, and Joeseph Trotto Junior. It's a late show (11 PM doors) and admission is $10 at the door.

Le1f recently released a new mixtape, Fly Zone, the followup to 2012's tape, Dark York, and like its predecessor, Fly Zone it's got murky beats and Le1f's impressive space age flow. The mixtape's got guest spots from Spank Rock, Haleek Maul, SAFE, Don Jones, Rahel and Kitty (who dropped the "Pryde" from her name, and who plays 285 Kent tonight [2/7]). You can download Fly Zone for free HERE and stream it in full below.

Le1f also appears as a guest on the new Sasha Go Hard mixtape, Round3: The Knockout, on the song "To The Girls." The mixtape also features production from Diplo on a track, and a verse from Kreayshawn on another one. Though Sasha and Le1f work well together, Le1f prefers the futurism of cloud rap, while Sasha's razor sharp flow is rooted in the gangsta rap of yesteryear. You can download that mixtape for free HERE and stream it in full below.

Diplo at Pier 94 - 12/30/12 (via Chris Neil)
Diplo

Diplo, who was just in NYC opening for Afrojack at Pier 94 on December 30 (pictured above, video below), will be doing an interesting run of shows this month. On January 20, the super producer will set out to play four cities in one day. He'll begin at 6 PM in Baltimore's Ottobar, then make it to Philly's Sound Garden Hall at 9:30, Atlantic City's Mixx @ Borgata Resort at 12:30 AM, and finally he'll end in NYC at The Westway at 3:30 AM. Tickets for the NYC show are on sale now. The flyer for the shows is below.

In related news, Diplo's Major Lazer project will release its new album, Free the Universe, on February 19 via Mad Decent/Downtown. The album features guest spots from Santigold, Amber Coffman (Dirty Projectors), Ezra Koenig (Vampire Weekend), Wyclef Jean, Flux Pavillion, and others. You can check out the cover art, tracklist, and video for the song with Flux Pavillion, "Jah No Partial," below.

Baby New Year

Love it or loathe it, New Year's Eve is coming. Here are some of this year's NYC concert options, of which there are many.

One of the biggest shows of the night is Coldplay and Jay-Z at Barclays Center. If you've seen pictures of Coldplay's tour this year, you know they have this bluetooth controlled, light-up wristbands that (no matter how you feel about their music) makes for a spectacular interactive experience. And certainly Jay-Z will throw a good party at his own house.

Jay-Z's pal Kanye West is doing a three-night run in Atlantic City right before NYE (12/28-30) at Revel. Tickets for those shows are still available.

Another hip hop option includes Nas at Radio City Music Hall that also features Elle Varner. Tickets are still available.

Azealia Banks is playing a black tie party on top of The Standard Hotel (aka Boom Boom Room). More info is at the facebook event. You can RSVP for tickets ($250 minimum) by emailing unifiedpromo@unifiedpromo.com.

Also in the biggest NYE show race there is also Phish's sold-out night at MSG, part of a four night run at the venue.

If jam bands are your thing, you might also want to catch The Disco Biscuits, who kick off their four-night run at Best Buy Theater tonight (12/26) and then play NYE at The Theatre at MSG (tickets).

Another jammy option is Gov't Mule's two-night run at Beacon Theatre (12/30-31). Tickets for both nights are on sale.

If you're more into dancing, RJD2 will be DJing at Gramercy Theater with Com Truise and Chrome Sparks; and Moby and many others will be DJing at an as-yet undisclosed location (tickets).

Pretty Lights is also doing two sold nights at Roseland Ballroom (12/30-31). Another dance option that you might want to avoid is Afrojack is playing two nights on Pier 94 (12/30-31), but it's worth mentioning that if you get there early on night 1, you can catch opening sets by Diplo and Rusko. Night 2 (aka NYE) is sold out but night 1 is still on sale.

Brooklyn dance party The Bunker is throwing an event at the 70 N 6 St loft (above Public Assembly) with John Roberts, Mike Parker, Bryan Kasenic, and Mike Servito. Tickets for that party are on sale now.

Downstairs at the actual Public Assembly, Gaze 4 Daze is throwing two queer parties. Room 1 has DJ sets by Rizzla, Sebastian, and D'Hana, along with Emcee Ryann Supamakenzi and host Cherlyn. In room 2, they've got MIchael Magnan, Amber Valentine, Telfar, Mursi Layne, host Helen Harris, and live performances by House of Ladosha, Cakes Da Killa, and Abdu Ali. $10 at the door gets you into both parties.

Brooklyn warehouse party group Rubulad is presenting "Party-Go-Round" in three separate secret Bushwick locations near the Jefferson L stop. There will be live music by Friend Roulette, Not Waving but Drowning, Viva, and more; dance parties with music by DJ Shakey, Ol' Stark, DJ Mojo, $mall ¢hange and more; a puppet show, a midnight champagne toast, and more. Admission is $20, the events start at 9 PM, and there will be a party bus to navigate between the three locations.

Matthew Dear and Superpitcher are at Le Bain (tix); Ian Pooley, Pat Mahoney and more at Cameo; Onra, Nick Catchdubs, and Samo Sound Boy are at Williamsburg's Villian (tickets).

Holy Ghost! and Midnight Magic are at Brooklyn Bowl (sold out) and after that, Holy Ghost!'s DFA labelmate Juan Maclean will DJ an afterparty at the same venue (tickets).

Chris Keating of Yeasayer is DJing a BangOn!NYC-presented party at a secret warehouse location in Williamsburg near the Montrose L stop with Felix Cartal, Chordashian, Alex English, Sean Glass, and many others. There will also be live music by Carousel, Suntalk, and more TBA, art installations, an inflatable obstacle course, food trucks, and more. Tickets (more info at that link) are on sale and RSVP is open. Location will be revealed with the purchase of tickets or an RSVP.

If you'd rather dance to classic soul and R&B, there's New York Night Train Annual Dusk Till Dawn New Year's Ball at Home Sweet Home featuring a live performance from Kid Congo and the K-Holes, plus Jonathan Toubin and a crew of DJs.

For the indie rock inclined, you could go see Titus Andronicus at Glasslands which is a pretty small venue for them these days. While So So Glos were originally on the bill for this, they have since dropped off. Dapwell, formerly of Das Racist, is your MC for the evening and tickets are still available.

Right next door at 285 Kent, Florida's (awesomely) mopey Merchandise will visit,  plus Blanche Blanche Blanche, Tonstartssbandht and "speciial guests" (note the two ii's is "speciial") will surely be a wild night. Dive in, tickets ($20) are on sale now.

After that, DJ Rashad, DJ Manny, Sasha Go Hard, and others will play an afterparty at 285 Kent (tickets).

Psychic Ills and Herb Craft are playing Saint Vitus. Tickets for that show are on sale.

Also happening in Williamsburg, They Might be Giants play a sold-out show at Music Hall of Williamsburg (one of three shows there that week; Reverend Vince Anderson and His Love Choir will be at Union Pool (free); and at Knitting Factory it's a night of cabaret hosted by the great Murray Hill (tix).

More indie rock: Blonde Redhead and Beach Fossils are at Irving Plaza. Tickets are still available and you can also win a pair from us.

Swimming Cities and Gowanus Ballroom (55 9th St) are presenting The First Party Ever: Primal Reset for the Year Zero with dance parties by Barney Iller, DJ Shakey, and DJ Tinseltown; live music at midnight by Stumblebum Brass Band; an open bar from 11:30-12:30; visuals; "Serret's patented coal fire hot tub time machine"; "Live birth of the antichrist, according to Doctor Adventure"; and more. $15 tickets are on sale now (or $20 at the door, cash only) and all proceeds go to recovery at Serret Metal Works and the "BOATEL" art hotel project in Far Rockaway that were damaged during Hurricane Sandy.

Meanwhile across the Hudson, The Hold Steady will ring in 2013 with Lucero at The Wellmont Theatre in NJ. Tickets are still available.

Before that, Lucero will do a two-night run at Brooklyn Bowl (12/28-29) with Nude Beach supporting on night 1 and Hollis Brown on night 2. Tickets for night 1, night 2, or both are still available.

Amanda Palmer will be at Terminal 5, playing Prince's Purple Rain in its entirety which will surely be a spectacle. She'll play a set of originals too. Tickets are still available.

If you'd like to party like it's 1929, Spirit Family Reunion are bringing the old time religion to Pianos. Tickets are still available, includes a champagne toast.

More rootsy options include The Punch Brothers and Michael Daves at Bowery Ballroom (sold out); and The Felice Brothers, Yellowbirds, and Mail the Horse at Mercury Lounge (sold out).

The Felice Brothers also play Maxwell's (12/30) a day earlier (sold out), and on New Year's Eve, the Hoboken venue will host "Maxwell's Rockin' & Rollin' Ass Kickin' New Year's Eve Dance Party feat. The Two Giants: Todd-O-Phonic Todd & Mono-O-Phonic Matt Porter." They get their name from being big San Francisco Giants fans, and they'll be spinning "some of the greatest soul, r'n'b, garage, rock'n'rol etc" all night. Admission is totally free, no cover.

My Morning Jacket is doing a sold out pre-New Year's Eve three-night run (12/27-29) at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester.

After that, Capitol Theatre will host Steve Miller Band on 12/30 (tickets) and funky METERS with Dumpstaphunk on NYE (tickets).

For some old school punk, Manitoba (the project of Dictators frontman Dick Manitoba) and Sylvain Sylvain (of New York Dolls) will play Bowery Electric with The A-Bones and Daddy Long Legs. Tickets for that show are on sale.

To keep the party going the next day, head to SOB's for Questlove's holiday party.

Whatever you end up doing, be safe!.

What did we miss?

Heading to Austin? We have a list of shows happening there too. Update: And Chicago too.

Happy Halloween
--

Let's just forget (not really) about this hurricane thing for one second, and try to remember that today is also Halloween! What are you going to be? What were you for Hallowmeme? Need instructions on dressing as a Canadian Indie Musician? Are you dressing up your baby? And are you going to one of the limited NYC events still happening? Or will you just save your costume and hopefully wear it to the belated Halloween Parade that might happen next week.

As you can see in the photo above, BV photographer Chris La Putt (not actually him) found his costume and is going to be Instagram for Halloween (actually, he's stranded without phone, internet or power in Jersey City).

Speaking of BV photoraphers, we just found out that we posted a picture of Jezebel writer Jenna Sauers in her Halloween costume in 2009 (and drunkenly ate falafel near her at 4am).

One CT resident got a Halloween-themed surprise when Sandy uncovered a human skeleton under a down tree. They think it was put there hundreds of years ago when the area was a burial ground.

Of course not everyone is having an unhappy holiday. And many are still dressing up, like Miley Cyrus who is doing Nicki Minaj.

Dum Dum Girls dressed up as nuns and brought out the Dum Dum Boys, last night.

LA band Deap Vally who are currently in Europe on tour with the Vaccines, show off their costumes....

BK mags

We already posted lots of posts today. Here's some more, and some reminders too...

With the opening of the Barclays Center (follow @BrooklynVegan on Twitter for some scenes from the chaos), both New York and Time Out ponder the changing landscape of Brooklyn in this week's issues.

Speaking of the new venue, Lady Gaga's MSG (2/22) & Barclays Center (3/6) shows sold out today, so she added one more at each venue. The new dates are 2/23 @ MSG and 3/7 @ Barclays. Both go on sale Friday, October 5th at 10am.

Other NYC shows that went on sale today include JEFF the Brotherhood, Field Report, Diamond Rings, Anais Mitchell, Kelly Hogan, Callers and Petty Fest.

And regarding that Staten Island politician talking shit about her, Lady Gaga thanked him.

As mentioned, Soundgarden is releasing a new album, their first in 15 years, on 11/13. Now you can hear the first song which is streaming at the bottom of this post.

In other bands who were good in the '90s Barclays Center news and, Smashing Pumpkins warmed up for their arena tour with an intimate, two-and-a-half-hour show at Stubb's in Austin last night. The tour hits the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Halloween.

Listen to the title track from Bad Brains' forthcoming new album.

Apple knows its maps app sucks.

Trevor Dunn, who is currently on tour as a member of Melvins Lite, took to his tour diary to comment on Green Day frontman BIlie Joe Armstrong's recent freakout: "That guy's main problem is that he doesn't realize that he is Justin Bieber."

Do you love the blown-out, pixelated artork on MIA albums? You may want to buy here coffee table book then.

On a somewhat similar publishing tip, Diplo "and photographer Shane McCauley are launching the zine series Blow Your Head. Each volume will explore a different country and musical genre.

Tour diaries are hot these days. (Have you read ours with Kelly Pratt whose touring with David Byrne and St. Vincent)? Diamond Rings and Stars writing about their adventures on the road for The Huffington Post. Those adventures included a show at Webster Hall this week.

Winter is coming for everyone, it seems. Neko Case tweeted today: "Dude. I'm just gonna admit to being balls-deep in Game of Thrones on CD."

While on the subject of rock star confessions, a recent quote from Pete Townshend: "What I remember of the size of Mick Jagger's penis - I remember it as being huge and extremely tasty."

If you need more, maybe you'd like to read some Phil Collins erotic fan fiction?

Speaking of St. Vincent, today is Annie Clark's 30th birthday. Happy Birthday, Annie! We always liked this picture of her, by Chris La Putt, from her days as a member of the Polyphonic Spree:

ST VINCENT

Catch St Vincent and David Byrne in Williamsburg Park on Saturday. How was their second Beacon show? Check out pictures from the first (also by Chris La Putt).

It's also Les Claypool of Primus' birthday, who turn 49. Catch Primus on tour this fall.

Not that surprising, but awesome -Austin just became the first Texas city to endorse marriage equality.

Austin music venue Scoot Inn, a popular place to be during SXSW, has a new owner.

Kreayshawn's new album flopped.

Mumford & Sons' new album probably won't.

BFF

After busting up the gang in 2000, snarky mid-'90s piano trio Ben Folds Five reunited this year with a new album on the way and a tour, which they're on now. The tour stops at Central Park Summerstage tonight (9/14), their first NYC show in 12 years. Tickets for tonight's show are still available. BFF will also return to the NYC area for a show at Port Chester's Capitol Theatre on October 9 with Kate Miller Heidke (tickets) and a couple days later they will play opening night of New York Comic Con on October 11. Tckets for that are still available too.

Ben Folds Five, best known for their ballad "Brick" back when people still held up lighters at shows (1997), have a new album, The Sound Of The Life Of The Mind, which is their first since 1999 and is out next week (9/18). The record was funded via Pledgemusic and is a little mellower than the bouncy, fuzzy pop of their Clinton-era singles like "Underground" and "The Battle of Who Could Care Less" but his sense of humor seems intact. You can listen to tracks at SPIN, TeamCoco and Rolling Stone.

Ben Folds Five are also playing Florida's Deluna Fest which happens September 21 - 23 in Pensacola Beach, FL and also features Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, Bob Mould doing Copper Blue, Diplo, Florence & the Machine, Band of Horses, and many more. Tickets for Deluna Fest are still available and full line-up is below.

A list of all Ben Folds Five dates, a few classic clips and that Deluna Fest lineup are below...

Continue reading "reunited Ben Folds Five releasing LP, playing Central Park (tonight), Comic Con, Deluna Fest (lineup) & other dates"

Kreayshawn

Kreayshawn is set to release her debut album, Somethin 'Bout Kreay, on September 18, instead of August 14 as originally planned, via Columbia and it will feature guest spots from 2 Chainz, Diplo, Sissy Nobby, Kid Cudi, and others. That's the cover art above and you can check out the tracklist below. In support of it she'll be going on the ALL GIRL aka GROUP HUG TOUR with Rye Rye, Honey Cocaine, and Chippy Nonstop. That tour hits NYC on November 15 at Irving Plaza. Tickets for that show are on sale now. The full list of dates is still TBA.

In related news, Azealia Banks, who dissed Kreayshawn on twitter earlier this year, recently apologized, tweeting, "I apologize for coming down on you so hard earlier this year," and Kreayshawn responded, "It's all G! I fux with you music above all!" Kreayshawn then spoke to MTV about the apology:

"I went to her Mermaid Ball show in LA because a lot of my homegirls were performing," Kreayshawn said. "She ended up hitting me up a couple of weeks after and said, 'I really wanna publicly apologize,' and I [thought that was] really dope."

"I think it's cool because there's so many girls looking up to everyone that all the beef tears our fans apart," the rapper continued. People feel like, 'I have to be this person's fan and hate on this person.' So I think it shows that you can forgive people, you can apologize to people, you can realize you're wrong and it shows camaraderie for all girls. It's for girl power."

Azealia Banks also hinted at collaboration with Kreay, and wants to throw Angel Haze in the mix too.

Angel Haze, like Azealia Banks, got her start in NYC on a Beggars-related label (Azealia on XL, Angel on True Panther), and she recently announced that she has signed to major label, Universal (Island in the UK), making her labelmates with Azealia Banks. As mentioned, Angel Haze's next NYC show happens on August 29 at SOB's. Tickets for that show are on sale now.

Meanwhile, Azealia Banks' debut LP for Universal, Broke With Expensive Taste, which was supposed to come out this fall, has been pushed back to February, 2013. Check out her recent video for "Van Vogue" off the 1991 EP, which was released in June, below.

Azealia Banks

Azealia Banks has also recently made a fan out of Shirley Manson of Garbage (who are reunited with a new album and have been touring all year). In an interview with IFC, Shirley was asked about her opinion on the rise of female rappers:

My favorite out of those is Azealia Banks. The first time I heard "212? I almost died. It felt dangerous and exciting and really fresh and I have a little crush on Kreayshawn, too. But I don't know if those girls are getting time on the radio. It's great that they are getting played via YouTube or Tumblr, but I want them on the radio. Like in the 90s when Missy Elliott was getting played. You know, it's hard out there right now for women with attitude.
Garbage's remaining tour dates, which include some shows with Screaming Females, are over at BV Austin.

Kitty Pryde

Speaking of rappers getting played via YouTube or Tumblr, Kitty Pryde (pictured with Doom above) is on tour and she plays NYC TONIGHT (8/22) at Santos Party House (she hears Andrew WK owns it). Since we last spoke, Lakutis (who also plays as part of a stacked lineup at Glasslands in September) was added to tonight's bill. Tickets for the show are still available.

Also, next week at Santos (8/30) is the next Shortcuts party with Kreayshawn collaborator Riff Raff and Meyhem Lauren (Angel Haze played the last one). Tickets for that show are still available.

Speaking of Meyhem Lauren (a man) and rappers signing to major labels (Action Bronson), Action Bronson, Meyhem Lauren, and Tanya Morgan (a group of men) play a free NYC show this week and we're giving away VIP tickets.

House of Ladosha, who play 285 Kent on Saturday (8/25), also play Santos next month (9/20) with SSION and TEETH (tickets).

LE1F has been added to the upcoming Big Freedia show on a boat. Tickets are still on sale and stay tuned for a ticket contest for this show coming later in another BrooklynVegan post.

Snoop Dogg / Lion in 'Reincarnated'
Snoop Lion

Snoop Dogg, who now goes by Snoop Lion, plans to release his first album under the new moniker later this year via Vice. The album is called Reincarnated, it's reggae based, and was produced by Major Lazer. Reincarnated was influenced by Snoop's trip to Jamaica, regarding which he said:

"I didn't want to be Snoop Dogg on a reggae track...I wanted to bury Snoop Dogg and become Snoop Lion, but I didn't know that until I went to the temple and received the name Snoop Lion from the Nyabingi priest." "From that moment on, I started to understand why I was there and was able to create something magical in this [Reincarnated] project...something I haven't done before in my career."
A documentary, also titled Reincarnated, about Snoop's time in Jamaica which delves into his time with Rastafarian elders and recording the album with Diplo in a Jamaican studio is also in the works. It will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, which happens on September 6 - 16. Check out the trailer for that documentary and his new Snoop Lion single, "La La La," below.

Snoop recently debuted the song live at Osheaga in Montreal, which went down from August 3-5. If you haven't been keeping up with our Osheaga coverage, pictures of day 1 are HERE, pics of day 2 are HERE, and pics of day 3 are HERE. A video of him playing "La La La" at Osheaga is below.

Though he wants to "bury Snoop Dogg," he hasn't forgotten totally about his past. He performed his classic debut LP, Doggystyle, which turns 20 next year, in full at NYC's Catalpa Festival, which went down late last month (pics from that fest are HERE). Some videos of Snoop's Catalpa performance are below. He also mentioned in an interview with Metro, that he's got other 20th anniversary plans for the album too: "I got sumthin on tha back burner but u gotta stay tuned in to see what that is. Be on da lookout for sumthin real special to keep ya knockin for anutha 20, ya dig?!?"

Snoop Dogg/Lion will going on tour this year which hits the NYC area on September 26 at The Paramount in Long Island and September 27 at Wellmont Theatre in Montclair, NJ. Tickets for the Paramount show go on sale Friday (8/17) at 10 AM with a venue presale starting today (8/16) at 10 AM. Tickets for the Wellmont show go on sale Friday (8/17) at noon.

A list of all currently known dates, videos, and song stream are below.

Diplo jumping off MHOW's balcony - 8/5/12 (via Diplo)
Diplo

The Mad Decent Block Party returned to NYC this past Sunday (8/5), happening for the first time in the newly-christened Williamsburg Park instead of South Street Seaport, where it's been in previous years. Unfortunately, due to the storm that hit NYC on Sunday which picked up during Erol Alkan's set, the party was shut down early before headliners Major Lazer (the project of Mad Decent label boss Diplo). Before the party did get shut down, we got sets by Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire, Bonde Do Role, Lunice, Riff Raff, Baauer, and more. You can check out some videos of the performances and the rain below.

After MDBP's cancellation, Diplo tweeted that Major Lazer would do an extra long set at the afterparty at Music Hall of Williamsburg, which also had sets by Erol Alkan, Lunice, and Jim-E-Stack. The party got pretty crazy, as you can see in the picture above of Diplo jumping off MHOW's balcony, but it didn't appease everyone. One angry MDBP attendee took to his blog to say, "Diplo (Major Lazer) invited the attendees from the free all ages event to a $10/21+ after show......Thanks a ton MAD DECENT." Granted, MHOW is also significantly smaller than Williamsburg Park and the party was announced way before the weather shut down the block party so it would've been hard to get in regardless, but he has a point that it doesn't totally "make up" for the cancellation. Major Lazer will be back in NYC for a much larger (paid) show on October 27 at Terminal 5 too (tickets).

Videos below...

Major Lazer at Governors Ball 2012 (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Major Lazer

Diplo's Major Lazer project (which Switch is no longer a part of), who is set to play the Mad Decent Block Parties this summer, have just announced their own NYC show, which goes down on October 27 at Terminal 5. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (8/3) at noon. A full Major Lazer tour has not been announced yet but a few other North American October dates exist, all of which are listed below.

Nicky Da B at Brooklyn Bowl in January (more by Erik Erikson)
Nicky Da B

New Orleans bounce artist Nicky Da B released his debut album, Please Don't Forget Da B last year. The album is driven by similar rapid fire vocal repetition to other artists in the genre like Big Freedia, who he opened for at Brooklyn Bowl in January. You can stream the entire album at the bottom of this post.

Unlike Freedia, Nicky Da B & DJ Rusy Lazer were down in Austin last month for SXSW, and they have a BUNCH OF NYC shows this week. They'll play Work In Progress tonight (4/2), Beauty Bar in Manhattan on Thursday (4/5) followed by a show at the Morgan on Thursday, after which they'll hit Santos Party House on Friday (4/6) with Kayla Guthrie, and Brooklyn Bowl on Saturday (4/7) with SSION, LE1F and Hair Jail. After Brooklyn Bowl it's an afterparty at Public Assembly (with just Rusty and friends), and finally there's an Easter day party at the Morgan too. All dates are listed with more details below.

Nicky Da B is also one of the guests on Diplo's upcoming Express Yourself EP, which drops in May via Mad Decent. Check out the video for the EP's title track which Nicky Da B appears on below.

Big Freedia has upcoming shows, Santos Party House included, too.

Liturgy
---

The above-pictured tweet is courtesy of Diplo who is currently out on the road with Sleigh Bells and Liturgy as opener. Lirtugy's next NYC show is with Zola Jesus and Talk Normal at Webster Hall (where fans will probably not make any weird faces), and their next NJ show will be part of a 2-day Metallica festival in Atlantic City called "Orion" (where they'll probably play so early, no Metallica fans will actually see them anyway).

Speaking of Zola Jesus, her tour just pit the Parish in Austin with Talk Normal and local Austin band Technicolor Hearts. Check out pictures at BV Austin.

Speaking of Diplo, he's on the cover of the new Billboard with Skrillex and A-Trak.

Liturgy's new video for "True Will" and all their curent tour dates are below...

Diplo

Diplo is keeping busy as usual. Check out a photo slideshow and dialog from a recent trip to Brazil at Vanity Fair. Speaking of Brazil, you can download Diplo's 2008 documentary on Brazilian Baile Funk on iTunes.

Diplo's set to release a free EP, titled Express Yourself, soon. The EP features collaborations with Datsik, Sabi, Elephant Man, GTA, Excision, Nicky Da B, Lazer Disk, and Billy the Gent. Listen to a sampler and check out the EP's artwork below.

Major Lazer (which Diplo is 1/2 of) released an "Original Don" EP in November and has since released a video for the song. Watch that below. Listen to the Bert On Beats Don Dada bootleg of "Original Don" and a Black Cards remix of the same track above (MP3) and below (stream) too.

Diplo has a few upcoming shows scheduled for the tail end of 2011 before he heads out on the Holy Ship! Cruise in early January. He plays in Philly tonight (12/29) at Union Transfer and then Dallas and then LA on New Year's Eve. In February he goes on tour with Sleigh Bells and Liturgy.

All dates, streams, videos (including Diplo's new Blackberry commercial) and artwork below...

Theophilus London in the studio w/ AraabMuzik (via AraabMuzik)
AraabMuzik and Theophilus

Theophilus London is touring the US and Canada in January and February after he plays the SnowGlove Festival in California at the end of this month. His tour will bring him to NYC on February 9 at Webster Hall. Tickets are on sale now. All dates are listed below.

Theophilus, who has been tweeting about being in the studio, was just pictured in studio with AraabMuzik, who posted the above picture to his facebook earlier today.

AraabMuzik will be in NYC for New Year's Eve at the Ad Hoc party at 285 Kent with Balam Acab, Laurel Halo, Light Asylum, Run DMT, and a special guest. Tickets for that show are still available and there will be two open bars during the night.

Theophilus London's track, "I Stand Alone," was recently remixed by Skream (listen below) who it was just announced is opening for Skrillex at T5 (which sold right right out today). AraabMuzik also opens one of Skrillex's LA shows. Diplo opens one too. But even though Diplo's playing a Skrillex show and approving of the American kids loving it, he still feels that the "most exciting sound out of 2011" is the more atmospheric bass stuff like Balam Acab (who plays the NYE show in Brooklyn with AraabMuzik).

Speaking of approving, Balam Acab seems to approve of the track his Tri Angle label-mate Clams Casino produced for The Weeknd on The Weeknd's new mixtape, which you can download for free.

All Theophilus dates and the Skream remix below...

Pusha T
Pusha T

Pusha T is playing in NYC TONIGHT (12/22) at Gramercy Theatre with NinjaSonik, Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire, Gilbere Forte, Emilio Rojas, and Jasmine Solano. Tickets are still available.

Earlier this week, Pusha dropped a freestyle over Common's "Sweet" off of his new LP, The Dreamer/The Believer, which came out on Tuesday. The Smoking Section reports that the track is a diss at Drake (who is touring in 2012 with Kendrick Lamar and A$AP Rocky). Stream it below.

Common played Highline Ballroom on Monday (12/19). Nas joined him at the show. You can stream the whole show below, and also check out a video of Nas joining in on "Ghetto Dreams" below.

Pusha T collaborator Wale also plays a show in NYC TONIGHT (12/22). HIs is at Webster Hall and tickets are still available. More dates, including one at Irving Plaza, are listed below.

Speaking of Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire and Emilio Rojas, they both just played S.O.B.'s with Kendrick Lamar on Monday (12/19). Talib Kweli saw the show, and tweeted, "The ASAP crew did a 20 min walk thru during the set. Classic Harlem lol." Check out a video from the show below.

Maybe Talib should give Diplo a heads up about Kendrick. Diplo recently tweeted "Kendrick lamar sounds like somebody that played for the supersonics in the 90s. Didn't know he was a rapper. What's his best tune?" (Hey Diplo, check out "The Spiteful Chant").

In other news, Kendrick told XXLMag that he and J. Cole are planning a joint album. "We're still trying to formulate it and sit down in a neutral zone, where either one of us is moving and doing shows, interviews and press all the time," he said. Kendrick told HipHopDx that he's lined up Just Blaze and Pete Rock for his next LP.

Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire will play NYC again when he opens for Action Bronson at Highline Ballroom on December 27. Tickets are still available. eXquire and Bronson both made Heems' list of favorite albums released in 2011.

Speaking of Talib Kweli, his group Idle Warship played Southpaw on 12/9. Some videos from that show are below. They'll do it again on January 4 at S.O.B.'s. Tickets are still available.

Dates, videos and stream below...

Sleigh Bells

RCRDLBL and Bing are presenting a show at the Eyebeam Art + Technology Center on December 15 with Smoke and Mirrors and special guest Diplo. The 21+ show is free but RSVP is required. The flier for this show is below.

Diplo also just announced a Florida tour with Sleigh Bells and Liturgy. The tour, which has been dubbed the 'Paradise Lost' tour, will be in support of the new Sleigh Bells album, Reign of Terror, which is due out on February 14 via Mom + Pop. No music from the album has been released yet (except for the riff-heavy album trailer) and a lot of the track titles share names with other popular songs and/or bands ("Born to Lose," "Leader of the Pack," "Comeback Kid," "Never Say Die," "D.O.A." etc). The album trailer and tracklist are below.

Speaking of Liturgy, they recently recorded their first ever Daytrotter Session, playing songs off of their Aesthetica album, which came out earlier this year. You can listen and download the entire session for free HERE.

Spoon @ Fun Fun Fun Fest
fun fun

Spoon had nothing to promote and no surplus of new songs to unveil. This was just an Austin band -- Austin's biggest indie band ever -- playing an Austin festival for their only major show of 2011 (at least so far). As a live unit, the four-piece that recorded Transmission (augmented here by an additional percussionist) is as precise as Spoon has ever been, cranking out savagely controlled, often slow-building versions of such songs as "Written in Reverse," "Delicate Places" and the instantaneously applauded "I Turn My Camera On." "We got horns!" frontman Britt Daniel proclaimed, bringing out a six-man section for "Cherry Bomb," "The Underdog" and "Jonathan Fisk." By the four-song encore, the crowd had both increased in enthusiasm and decreased in size -- no doubt some people had wandered to another stage to see the Damned, which Daniel himself had said he wished that he could do. [SPIN]
Personally I started at the Damned (who were great) and finished Saturday with about 30 minutes of Spoon which felt like the perfect chill ending to a long first-two-days of the outdoor Austin fest (right after their set I went back to the hotel, skipped all afterparties and crashed for 12 hours straight which made Sunday great).

Our first set of pictures from Saturday, Damned included, are HERE. Our second set continues, more of Spoon included, below...
