The [Dr. Dog] show started in an almost cult-like environment as the stage was adorned with abstract stain glass art that emitted a strange yet awe-inspiring light. As the band entered the stage, tribal hymns were piped through the sound system and the crowd greeted them with deafening applause. I felt as though I was entering the Temple of Dr. Dog and was about to take part in a right of passage or ritual into the band's world. The opening note was the monotone ring of Miller's organ as McMicken cried out the first line of "I Only Wear Blue," one of the more memorable tracks off the new record. It only got better from that point as Dr. Dog pleased the crowd with songs off all their records. The set featured a great balance of slower songs ("I Only Wear Blue," "Shadow People," and "The Breeze") and fast jams ("The Rabbit, the Bat, and the Reindeer," "Stranger," and "Mirror Mirror") that kept the entire venue swaying and jumping the entire night. Some memorable tunes were the band's cover of Architecture in Helsinki's "Heart It Races" (complete with an interpretive dance performance by a friend of the band), "The Ark," and "The Beach." -[Philadelphia City Paper]Dr. Dog played Terminal 5 on Friday night, 2/18 (a week before the Philly date, reviewed above) as part of their stint of East Coast dates with The Head and The Heart which concluded Saturday in Boston.
Phantogram was originally scheduled to be on board for the Terminal 5 date, but were replaced by Jeffrey Lewis following a family emergency.
If you missed the show on Friday, The Head & The Heart are teaming with Daniel Wayne to play Maxwell's TONIGHT (2/21). Tickets are still on sale.
Dr. Dog recently released a video of "I Only Wear Blue" made with compiled tour footage. Check that video out, as well as more NYC pictures and the T5 setlist below...
Phantogram at MHoW (more by Jessica Amaya)

"NYC fans, we're very sad to announce that we've had a family emergency and have to cancel the T5 show w/ Dr Dog this Fri, 2/18. We can't offer refunds, unfortunately, but please go enjoy the amazing Dr. Dog w/out us, and email phantogramterminal5@gmail.com tell us how it went. We'll work on something special for you, and you'll be the 1st to know about our next NYC show." - PhantogramSad news. Hope all is well with Phantogram who have been replaced on the bill by Jeffrey Lewis who maybe you caught at Shea Stadium the other day. Tickets for the Terminal 5 Dr. Dog show are still on sale.
Recent Sub Pop-signees The Head and the Heart are on tour with Dr. Dog, are playing Terminal 5 still, and have added their own NYC-area show at Maxwell's on 2/21. Daniel Wayne opens and tickets are on sale. All tour dates below...
The Head and the Heart

Phantogram, whose Barsuk labelmates the Dismemberment Plan released emergency & i for the very first time on vinyl this week, have been added as support on the February 18th Dr. Dog show at Terminal 5. They'll play 2nd on the bill that also includes The Head and The Heart who go on first. Tickets are still on sale for that show. The only other appearance Phantogram has coming up at the moment is Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on Wed, Feb 2nd (their TV debut).
The Head and the Heart, unlike Phantogram, is also opening all dates on Dr. Dog's January-March tour (updated dates below), and the Seattle band just announced that they've signed to Sub Pop...
"We here at camp Head and the Heart are extremely excited, happy, elated, and possibly over-the-moon for the relationship that has been consummated with Sub Pop Records. They've released so many seminal albums that we all in the band cherish and to be a part of that history is amazing. We're all still learning their nicknames, inside jokes and neurotic tendencies, but it feels good. It feels like home. We have no idea what this new year will bring (hopefully more Wine Fridays, am I right guys?), but with Sub Pop backing us, we're ready to find out.""Their self-titled debut is available digitally through SubPop.com and all major digital outlets as of January 11th, 2011. The record will be released on both CD and LP on April 16th in celebration of Record Store Day!" You can download a track in exchange for your email address at their site.

Dr Dog at Governor's Island (more by Tracy Allison)

We never meant to make you angry but we've received dozens of emails over the past few weeks asking us why we were ignoring the east coast. For a variety of reasons we had to keep our mouths shut, but we will no longer be silenced! This Saturday October 16th, our winter tour goes on sale and we're gonna get to a bunch of places we've been meaning to get for awhile. - Dr. DogHold your horses, people! Though maybe it wasn't New Yorkers complaining because Dr. Dog played NYC twice in the past two months (although one was open to NYU students only). The band will hit the road for a string of East Coast dates in the new year, including Terminal 5 on 2/18 with The Head and the Heart who will open all shows on that leg of the tour. Tickets for the NYC show are currently on AMEX presale, and go on regular sale at noon on Friday (10/15). All dates below.
In addition, Dr Dog want to "make amends" by offering a new song for free download. Grab "Nobody Know Who You Are" above. The track is part of a four song tour double 7" that will also surface on iTunes in the following weeks. One of the other three songs available on that 7", "Take Me Into Town", is also available to stream below.
Now that East-coasters have cooled their jets a bit, remember that Dr. Dog will show love to the rest of the country over the next few months as part of a US tour with Here We Go Magic. But before Here We Go Magic head out with Dr Dog, the band will play Bowery Ballroom TONIGHT (10/13) with The Love Language (Merge Records) and Delicate Steve (who just signed to Luaka Bop). Tickets are still available.
Delicate Steve also has some CMJ shows and will head out on tour with Fang Island in November. All dates below.
In other Dr. Dog related news, Juston Stens & the Get Real Gang featuring ex-Dr. Dog drummer Juston Stens plays TONIGHT at Pianos, one of three shows in the NYC area as the band will be back at Pianos two weeks later (on 10/27) and will play Littlefield as part of the Park The Van showcase on 10/22. There the band will be joined by headliner David Vandervelde, in addition to Generationals, Brass Bed, Giant Cloud, From A Fountain, and Young Nick Krill (of The Spinto Band). Tickets are on sale, or use your CMJ badge.
All tour dates and that Dr. Dog stream, and the new videos for "Shadow People", below.

Outkast is gone but not forgotten. Or maybe it's forgotten but not gone. That's more like it, actually. The group - perhaps the most important in Southern rap history, and certainly the most popular - doesn't cast the shadow it did 10 years ago, or even 5. ...Big Boi insisted from the stage on Monday night at Brooklyn Bowl: his partner is in the studio working on his album. And yes, there will be more Outkast to follow thereafter...The above review comes from Big Boi's appearance at Brooklyn Bowl on 9/6 (where Yelawolf made a surprise appearance). One day later, Big Boi teamed with Dr. Dog and The Knocks for an eclectic Tuesday night at NYU. It was their annual Mystery Concert, open only to NYU students, though as you can see in the pictures in this post, it was enjoyed buy at least one younger patron too (who is actually Big Boi's son Cross Patton. he was on stage at Brooklyn Bowl too). The other guy performing is Big Boi's hypeman Blackowned C-Bone.In the now, though, Big Boi is in a liminal place, somewhere between flamekeeper and nostalgia act.
Not that you notice during his performance, which is slick, reliable and impossibly fun... Hearing Big Boi perform only his half of Outkast's hits was a reminder of what modes he was responsible for in the group: pugnacity, salaciousness, street savvy. -[NYTimes]
Dr. Dog will hit the road in October to team up with Here We Go Magic for a string of dates that do NOT include NYC. Big Boi doesn't have any more NYC-area shows coming up, that we know about, at the moment either
Videos and pictures from from the NYU show, continue below...

Big Boi @ Brooklyn Bowl Monday night

"Yeah. Big Boi was really fun and he played almost all the Outkast and solo hits you could think of... but it was too short, and it really seemed like there should have been an encore. People stood around cheering for like 10 minutes and the house lights went down but, nothin." [panopticon]Yelawolf headlined the free Fool's Gold 'Day Off' Fest on Labor Day and then later popped up again to join Brooklyn Bowl headliner Big Boi on stage at his sold out, encore-less show last night. Yelawolf appears on the track "You Ain't No DJ" on Big Boi's new album. The official video for that song, and three live clips of other songs Big Boi played at Brooklyn Bowl, can be watched below.
And as reported, Big Boi will play a 2nd NYC show TONIGHT (9/7) for lucky NYU students who will also get a DJ set by The Knocks and a co-headlining live set by Dr. Dog who recently played a public show at Governors Island and who go out on tour with Here We Go Magic in October. The show is the annual NYU "Mystery Concert" (no longer a mystery) and is only open to students.
Big Boi's other upcoming dates include Vegas and Moogfest. Videos below...

Scott McMicken in his living room @ the Rock Shop

Scott McKicken (of Dr. Dog) played an intimate show, complete with custom cozy living room backdrop, at The Rock Shop on Sunday (8/22) with Mike Visser as part of a trio of shows with a goal in mind:
Along with our good friend Mike Visser, Scott is going to play a small handful of solo shows in August. Mike will support Scott on the short run and all the money they make will go towards an artistic colobaration whereby our own Scott McMicken will produce a record by our own Mike Vissar. The final show of the mini-tour is TONIGHT (8/24) in Arlington, VA at Iota Club & Cafe. More pictures from Sunday's show are below.Mike's been a long time friend and is an incredibly talented songwriter and we're looking forward to seeing what the two of them do together. These three shows are the first installment of the project and we expect more to come.

"Jerry Douthett was initially very angry with his pet Jack Russell after his pet pooch ran up to him and chomped off his big toe -- but after going to hospital to treat the wound, it appears his furry best friend has actually saved his life.Dr. Dog headline the free show on Governors Island tonight (8/15). If you can't be there, you can always stream it live on ConverseRadio.com.Douthett, a 48-year-old musician from Rockford, USA, had an infection in his foot for weeks, but hadn't wanted to seek any medical care for it, but after coming back home after a night out drinking and celebrating, Kiko, his dog, thought it best to take matters into his own hands. Or mouth, as it turned out.
Unbeknownst to Mr Douthett, he was in fact suffering from undiagnosed Type 2 diabetes, and the condition is now being treated thanks to his faithful friend's seemingly unfaithful act.
And if you were worrying how exactly the canine 'operation' occurred, don't worry -- Douthett was so drunk he has passed out on his sofa. At which point Dr Dog, who knew some free anesthetic when he saw some, took the opportunity to bite off the big toe." [Asylum]

Deer Tick

Saturday night at Terminal 5, Dr. Dog played the 9th the NYC show of their 2010 tour, and the final show before they leave for Europe next week. Their enthusiasm was matched by their equally excited fans who seemed to applaud louder and louder with each finishing song.
Deer Tick took the stage around 9:15. Dressed in full drag, including black eye shadow and red lipstick on lead singer John Mccauley. They were greeted by a roaring audience, with Mccauley mentioning that it was the band's 47th day on the road, and their last show before returning home to Rhode Island. They opened their set with "Easy", the first single from last year's release, Born on Flag Day. Following "Easy", Mccauley announced, "This next song is one I wrote when I was just 18 years old." and proceeded to play "Baltimore Blues No. 1" as the audience cheered excitedly, recognizing the song by the time Mccauley had played the first few chords. Borrowing songs from older albums, new ones from their upcoming album (which will be released on June 8th), and even covering a Buckcherry Chuck Berry song, Deer Tick played for a little over half an hour. One fan described the performance, stating "[John Mccauley's] grimey voice has grown in harmony." As a final hurrah during their set, Mccauley planted a sloppy kiss on the lips of lead guitarist Ian O'Neil, formerly of Titus Andronicus.
Dr. Dog

By 10 p.m. the massive venue was packed wall to wall with fans. Around 10:15, the members of Dr. Dog slowly appeared on stage while audience members screamed and threw their hands in the air. Following their third song, the hundreds and hundreds of people in the audience all began chanting the band's name. Halfway through the set, Toby Leaman took a cue from Deer Tick's performance and donned a long dress-like, red cloak, saying, "I feel human for the first time." The band finished their set at 11:35. Five minutes later, they returned for a 15 minute encore during which one guy got on stage with a bouquet of roses and proposed to his girlfriend. By 12 a.m. the show was over and fans began pouring out of Terminal 5, happily commenting on the night's fantastic performances.
