Suffocation and Tombs will be playing will be playing the Edison Lot, and Skinless will be playing the 5/21 Ottobar show. Maryland Deathfest XIII happens May 21 - 24, 2015, and today the first round of confirmed bands were announced. 32 in total were listed to whet the appetites of early birds interested in snatching up their tickets when they become available on Saturday, July 19 at 3 PM EST through the Maryland Deathfest website. The bands include such heavyweights as Neurosis, D.R.I., and Triptykon, who missed this year's fest due to the passing of H.R. Giger. Triptykon leads a number of bands who will be making MDF their exclusive US appearance in 2015. Others include Australia's Portal, Sweden's Wolfbrigade, and Norway's Arcturus. The full list that's full of pleasant surprises -- Hello, Bulldozer! Hello, Melt-Banana! -- appears below.

So, while the bill will look different, the venues will remain the same. Per the promoters:

We were satisfied with the venue situation this year, so we've decided to use the same set up again next year. What does this mean? We will use the Edison Lot (located at 545 N. High St) for our 2 main stages, Rams Head (located at 20 Market Pl) will be used each night and will host death/black metal bands, and Soundstage (located at 124 Market Pl) will be used each day/night for grind/hardcore/punk bands. On Thursday, only Rams Head will be used.
The full list of bands along with the trailer for Welcome to Deathfest that documents the 2013 event and screens in NYC soon, below...

Writer/photographer Laina Dawes has just released her new book, WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE? A Black Woman's Life and Liberation in Heavy Metal. The book recounts her journey as a black woman in heavy metal and examines these genres with respect to racial and gender issues. Its a fascinating read, and available now via Bazillion Points. Reccommended.

Trey Azagthoth of Morbid Angel
Maryland Death Fest

May 26th was a day of firsts for me at the tenth annual Maryland Deathfest. It was the first time I saw Confessor, Deviated Instinct and Haemorrhage. The first time I heard "new" material from death-doom godsWinter. The first time I saw Noothgrush with new live vocalist Dino Sommese (Ghoul, Dystopia, etc). And maybe most memorably, the first time I witnessed a man whip out his junk out on stage, piss in his cupped hand and wipe his face with it.

The latter first came care of Horna, who's lead singer Spellgoth performed the "urine baptism" at center stage (pictures below, NSFW?) and was one of several notable black metal-influenced performances (Archgoat, Tsjuder, Black Witchery) on that brutally hot Saturday. The moment wasn't noticed by many, but the foul stench of old blood and human fluids left a trail throughout the indoor stage.

My mid-afternoon arrival at Sonar meant that I sadly missed sets by Infernal Stronghold, Bloody Phoenix, and Looking for an Answer, and not-so-sadly missed October 31 (members Deceased) and Anvil (the former being eons better than the latter). The remainder of the sweltering hot day was largely a string of successes with stellar sets from crusty thrashers Hellbastard, UK's Dragged into Sunlight, deliciously obnoxious goregrind from Haemorrhage, death-doom pioneers Winter (who played unearthed songs at MDF), thrash from Morbid Saint and an impressive set from the reunited technical-doom crew Confessor.

Reunited crust-death metal crew Deviated Instinct wins for my favorite of the daytime performances (they played at close to the same time as The Devil's Blood), and though bassist David Vincent gave me a bit of a Nikki Sixx douche-chill during Morbid Angel's headlining set, the band's performance of the early classics absolutely murdered. Brujeria, the supercrew made up of members of Napalm Death, Carcass and more, were great headliners for the opposing outdoor stage but I opted for Noothgrush.

More pictures from day three at Maryland Deathfest are below. If you missed them, check out day one pictures HERE, a set of Rorschach's pictures HERE, and day two pictures HERE.

Mike Scheidt solo at Empty Bottle in Chicago (more by Carmelo Espanola)
Mike Scheidt

Mike Scheidt (of YOB) just may surprise you with "In Your Light" from his previously discussed solo debut Stay Awake due on May 15th via Thrill Jockey. Look for the Yob frontman to celebrate the tunes in NYC when he joins Richmond doomers Cough as support for his own band at The Bell House on May 23rd. Tickets are still available.

Yob, who just played Roadburn 2012, is also scheduled to hit Maryland Deathfest this year.

Cough will embark on a string of dates with Dragged into Sunlight following their appearance at Maryland Deathfest 2012. After those dates come to a close, look for DiS to hook up with Wolvhammer for a string of shows including Saint Vitus on 6/14 with The Year is One (tickets).

All tour dates and that stream is below.

DOWNLOAD: Dragged Into Sunlight - "Boiled Angel" (MP3)

Dragged Into Sunlight

I was a bit shocked when the news that the UK's Dragged Into Sunlight had signed to Prosthetic Records. Not that the label toils in bands that I despise - just the opposite, but that anyone outside of the true underground realm would sign such a foul and loathsome band.

Trust me, I mean that as a complement. Dragged Into Sunlight is ambient doom blackened through and through. You can hear their demonic touch on their Prosthetic reissued LP Hatred For Mankind due on January 18th, 2011 for the first time on US soil. Produced by the great Billy Anderson and featuring atwork from Justin Bartlett, Hatred For Mankind features seven tracks of pure vitriol like "Boiled Angel", which is available for download above and streaming below.

Dragged Into Sunlight have announced April European dates with Rwake, but are currently plotting a North American invasion. Stay tuned. Announced dates, the song stream and some video is below.
