Duffy @ Lollapalooza 2008 (more by Bao Nguyen)

The cola war has been heating up globally in the last couple of months with music as the weapon of choice.

Pepsi's image rebranding campaign, including a new smile-esque logo, launched right after Christmas with a tv commercial featuring The Apples in Stereo song, "Energy". They then went deep during the Super Bowl, dropping a spot featuring Bob Dylan and Will.I.Am singing "Forever Young" as the beverage's new anthem.

Coke counters with a European spot for Diet Coke that features a playful Duffy doing things on her time during an encore break at a concert. In the commercial, she sings a cover of Sammy Davis Jr's "I Gotta Be Me."

When Sara Tate, a senior planner at the London advertising agency Mother, was asked to find a new face for Diet Coke, she knew what she didn't want. "Definitely no rent-a-face," says Tate, whose ad with Duffy will launch on British television, before rolling out across Europe. "We steered clear of yet another glamorous star with a six-figure fee who will promote anything if the price is right. The public is getting smart to that. We wanted someone who is well known, but not hugely famous. Someone who is on the rise, for whom fame is recent enough that they remember what it is like to have a regular life. Duffy was a perfect fit because, although she is extremely successful, she's still incredibly down to earth." [Via Times Online]
Duffy has since cleaned up at the Grammys, at the British version of the Grammys, and - per Paul McCartney's request, recorded a cover of his song "Live And Let Die" for the new War Child Heroes comp that is released in the US this week. You may have heard the Beck/Dylan track from the same album, when it was played during the credits of last night's Oscars (more on the Oscars in a second...).

JusticeCoke's second attack is from Justice - Coke enlisted the duo along with Ed Banger Records' So_Me to design a glow-in-the-dark bottle and provide the soundtrack, their massive jam "D.A.N.C.E.", to a commercial. The bottle will be available in clubs throughout Europe. See the bottle in the commercial below.

The third assault from the Coke comes in their Full Throttle NHRA spots; three of the five have licensed songs: The Faces has "Blue Moon" by the Mavericks, The Machine kicks it country with Merle Haggard's "Working Man Blues", and Left Behind features Operator Please's "Zero Zero."

The final wave occurred as I was writing this article. A one-two punch during the Oscars with both The Boy Least Likely To's "Be Gentle With Me" and Sea Ray's "Revelry" showing up in Coke spots during the telecast on ABC (no video available yet). For those not familiar with the band, Sea Ray broke up in 2005.

As previously announced, PW will be visiting the United States to play Coachella on April 19th. Add to that trip a pre-Coachella San Francisco show, and an April 24th show at Nokia Theatre in NYC. Tickets for the latter go on sale Friday at noon. All known dates below...

TMZ can confirm that Chris Brown just entered an LAPD station, where he turned himself in to police.

Chris is being investigated by the LAPD for an alleged domestic violence felony battery that occurred early this morning near Hancock Park in L.A. Police officials said earlier today they may arrest Brown when they found him. Well, now they know where he is.

According to the female victim -- who cops refuse to identify -- she and Chris got into an argument which turned violent. Cops say when they arrived to the scene, Brown had split, but the woman had "visible injuries and identified Brown as her attacker."

Brown and his girlfriend Rihanna were together earlier last night, attending Clive Davis' pre-Grammy party -- and both canceled their scheduled performances at tonight's event.

Brown is currently being interviewed by detectives. [TMZ]

Radiohead did show up the Grammys, as did an even MORE pregnant M.I.A.. Robert Plant and Alison Krauss took best album (for an album that came out on indie label Rounder Records). Video of Radiohead and M.I.A.'s performances, and a list of all winners (including Daft Punk) below...

Of all things to do yesterday/Sunday (October 26), the day after he got no sleep for 5 straight CMJ days in a row, Kyle went to NJ to see/shoot Coldplay who were playing their first of two shows in a row at the venue formerly known as Continental Airlines Arena.

Coldplay also performed in NYC during CMJ - a private TV show taping - at Hammerstein Ballroom. Their last, semi-proper NYC show was the free one they did at MSG.

Duffy, who played her own CMJ show at Webster Hall during the week, helped guarantee the show would be even more boring opened for Coldplay last night. More pictures (but none of Duffy) below...

Sharon Jones @ Virgin

"Hey, Duffy: This is what soul sounds like: Tribal, earthy, hip-shakin', swerve-throwin' Sharon Jones." [Time Out Chicago]
She played Coachella. She played Bonnaroo. She played Lollapalooza. She played Osheaga. She played the Virgin Festival in Baltimore. And this past Sunday she and the Dap Kings (they were at all those other places with her too) headlined Central Park Summerstage in NYC. Other Daptone family members shared the bill...
Naomi Shelton first lifted her soulful voice into the Daptone family back in the Desco days of the late 1990s. Under her maiden name, Naomi Davis, she gave us "Forty First Street Breakdown," which has become a secret weapon for funk DJs....Naomi has a regular Friday-night residency at the West Village's Fat Cat, during which she and her band regularly blow away the audience with her powerful vocals, popping basslines, and spot-on harmonies (andfor only $3, it's probably one of the cheaper ways to change your life)...

...Menahan Street Band is one of the many projects of Thomas Brenneck, best known, perhaps, as the guitarist for the Dap-Kings, the Budos Band, and Amy Winehouse. Recorded entirely in analog in his Brooklyn home, Menahan Street Band's debut LP, Make the Road by Walking, out October 14, redefines the idea of bedroom project.

Sharon Jones always brings audience volunteers up on stage to dance with her. At the Apollo show she brought a guy named Rik up on stage. I know it was Rik because she brought him up AGAIN Sunday at Summerstage and he blogged about it.

The pictures in this post are from the Virgin Festival. More of those, and some videos from Lollapalooza, below...

Duffy @ Lollapalooza

"The one major Lolla letdown was Duffy, the 24-year-old Welsh singer who's on the cover of the new Spin. She's being hyped as the next Amy Winehouse, but Duffy's thin, shrill voice makes Ms. Winehouse sound like Aretha Franklin." [Dallas News]
Duffy is currently getting drizzled on at All Points West. More pics from her Lollapalooza show below...

Sex Pistols @ Live at Loch Lomond, Scotland - Aug 3, 2008 (mdj)

Is John Lydon aka Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols on a mission for as much press as possible? If so, it's working. First came the incident with Bloc Party's Kele which also involved the Foals and which Lydon denied has anything to do with racism. Since then:

The Sex Pistols demanded a fence be erected around their toilet at a music festival last weekend. The punk rockers reportedly didn't want to share their private toilet and asked for a high security barrier to keep people out at Scotland's Live at Loch Lomond festival. Frontman John Lydon - also known as Johnny Rotten - was also said to be incensed when he realised electro band Autokratz were being driven around the event in a better car than his band, and demanded the vehicles were switched. Autokratz singer David Cox told Britain's Daily Star newspaper: "The Sex Pistols had two Land Rovers to ferry them around the site but Johnny seemed to prefer our car.

"So he made us take all our equipment out so he could travel 40 metres in it."

Once the switch had been completed, John allegedly shouted: "Autokratz, as we have taken your Auto you are now just Kratz."... [New Zealand City]

Clever. And:
[Lydon] addressed the racist row that he was caught up in over the last 10 days when he sang a song about Allah and Jesus. He sang: "Allah be praised, George Bush be erased. Hello, Allah. Hello, Jesus too." He then told the crowd: "That is a little challenging to some of you. "So just in case you missed it the f****** papers had the f****** liberty to call me a racist. "I say hello, Allah. I'd like to buy Allah a f****** good pint of larger." Rolling up his sleeve, he berated fans saying: "Are you our friends? Well then, drink your beer instead of throwing it, you f****** idiot." Johnny also had a dig at Coldplay, saying: "This is audience participation 100 per cent. We're the Sex Pistols, not f****** Coldplay." And Rotten had a pop at Happy Mondays. They were head lining the Good Vibrations stage while the Pistols were on the main stage. The godfather of punk said: "Is there anybody there? Is there anybody over at Happy Mondays? That's a shame.".. [The Daily Record]
How punk. He also has beef with Pete Doherty, Amy Winehouse (the female Pete Doherty), and Duffy (the new Amy Winehouse). Those quotes below...

King Khan and the Shrines @ McCarren Pool

In a way, Sunday's free King Khan & the Shrines / Deerhunter (they didn't headline) / Black Lips show was also a King Khan show in three parts. Part one was the very entertaining performance by King Khan & The Shrines. Part two was King Khan on stage with Deerhunter whose final notes were overshadowed by King Khan's bare ass with a flower stuck in it. Part three was King Khan on stage with Black Lips which included a one-song guest appearance by The King Khan & BBQ Show (who are playing Santos Monday night) and a grand finale with the entire Atlanta crew on stage throwing toilet paper, ripping apart pillows and just generally being silly. The photos in this most are basically limited to act one...

Duffy @ the Apollo

Welsh soul singer Duffy has been dubbed the Princess of Wails by leading US newspaper the Wall Street Journal.

The paper says Duffy's concert at the Apollo Theatre in Harlem next Monday last night is part of the American debut of the 23-year-old, whose take on the Motown sound has made her a hit in Britain and across Europe.

"Duffy is part of a trend in pop music: the retooling of classic American soul by young British women. In that category the unrivaled champion is Amy Winehouse, whose multiplatinum album, Back to Black, spawned five Grammys and was critically hailed for its hip, horn-stabbed sound. But even as Ms. Winehouse has been showered with awards for her work, her career has been sullied by personal and legal troubles.

"As for the comparisons to Ms. Winehouse, Duffy's representatives are confident they will fade as Duffy's profile rises on the radio and with TV appearances next week on Live With Regis & Kelly, Ellen and Late Night With Conan O'Brien." [NewsWales]

The pictures in this post are from the Apollo show last night (May 12, 2008). Duffy also recently played Leno and Coachella. Today she'll be at the Virgin Megastore in Union Square. More Apollo pictures below....
