There have been a lot of Australian acts on tour in North America lately and if you wished there were more -- like, a whole lot more -- and you'll be in NYC during CMJ, you're in luck, with over 30 bands and artists from Down Under playing the fest. Most of them you can see all in one place on one day at the annual Aussie BBQ which happens this year at The Delancey on October 25. It's a free show and bands include Luluc, Dune Rats, Bad//Dreems and about 27 other acts. You can check out a sampler featuring a song from each artist playing the Aussie BBQ, and well as the full schedule, below.
Brisbane's Dune Rats, who have gone from a duo to a trio in the last year, released their debut album over the summer. It's punky, party-friendly pop and you can stream it in full below. They've got a total of five CMJ shows, as of this post, while here:

Melbourne/Brooklyn duo Luluc put out Passerby over the summer on Sub Pop and you can stream that in full via Rdio. And if you like their album, there are a lot of bands playing the Aussie BBQ who fit in a similar indie-folkpop style. In addition to the BBQ, Luluc are playing the Sub Pop CMJ showcase at Knitting Factory on October 23 (tickets) and before that will open for J Mascis at Bowery Ballroom on October 17 (sold out). All Luluc dates are listed below.
Adelaide's Bad//Dreems make guitar pop that skews a little more towards Aussie rock legends Hoodoo Gurus, with big choruses and and ringing guitars. The band have released a string of singles and EPs (no album yet) and you can stream some of those below. Bad//Dreems play four CMJ shows:

Lydia Ainsworth is based in Toronto these days but has spent time in both Montreal and New York City as a music student. It was while at NYU that she began delving into pop music. She spent two years working on her debut album, Right from Real, which was just released on Arbutus, home of Grimes. Being on the same label and also making electronic-y music, Ainsworth has gotten compared to Claire Boucher, but beyond superficial similarities, their music is pretty different. (Purity Ring is closer, as is, at times, Enya.) Right to Real shows off her composer / arranger skills (it's cinematic stuff), as well as her versatile voice. But you wouldn't put it on at a club -- though a couple songs are ripe for remixing. You can stream some of it below.
Ainsworth will be here for CMJ and she's currently got six shows lined up:
Thursday October 23rd @ Baby's All Right | Gorilla Vs. Bear showcaseLineups for the shows are listed below.
Friday October 24th @ Pianos | Planetary Radio day party FREE
Friday October 24th @ Arlene's Grocery | M For Montreal showcase
Friday October 24th @ Glasslands | Popgun showcase
Saturday October 25th @ Death by Audio | Arbutus Records showcase
Sunday October 26th @ Babycastles | Cardinal PR day show
The M for Montreal show, their annual CMJ poutine party, also features Homeshake, The Posterz, Solids, Heat, Lisa Leblac, Vesuvio Solo, The Muscadettes and a l l i e. That's not the only show the M folks are doing this year. On Tuesday, October 21 at Baby's All Right at midnight (so technically 10/22 morning) M4M will throw a late-night party with Honey, Homeshake, Calvin Love, The Mystery Lights, and OJ Pimpson. It goes till the wee hours and is FREE.
Speaking of Arbutus, the Montreal label is also throwing a free day party with Cascine Records on October 25 at Wythe Hotel's rooftop Ides bar with DJ sets from TOPS, Blue Hawaii, Erika Spring, No Excuses, and Wildarms. Cascine and Arbutus will also have a special show on Newtown Radio on October 20 from 9 - 11 PM.
CMJ lineups for shows mentioned above, as well as flyers and Lydia Ainsworth's partial album stream, below.
As mentioned, Ultimate Painting (aka James Hoare of Veronica Falls and Jack Cooper of Mazes) will release their debut album next month via Trouble in Mind. They've shared two more tracks from the album, "Winter in Your Heart" and "Ten Street," which you can stream along with the song "Ultimate Painting" and a mix they made with some of their influences, below.
Also as mentioned, UP will be in NYC for CMJ and they've got quite a few shows lined up already with maybe more still to be announced. Here's the lowdown:

DOWNLOAD: Dune Rats - "Red Light, Green Light" (MP3)
Speaking of Australia, Brisbane fuzz rock duo Dune Rats (aka Danny Beus and BC Michaels), who were one of Andy from Cake Shop's "21 Amazing Experience of 2012", surfaced with two EPs in 2011, Sexy Beach and Social Atoms, and they're planning to follow that with another EP, titled Smile, and eventually a debut full length at some point this year. No exact details on those releases exist, but the band recently released a single, "Red Light, Green Light," which you can download for free at the top of this post. It's of the Wavves-y stoner/beach rock variety and you can watch the video below, which consists entirely of both members smoking a variety of bongs (and I'm pretty sure they're actually doing it).
Dune Rats will be coming to the US for a tour surrounding SXSW this March which hits NYC on March 20 at Cake Shop (other bands TBA), March 21 at Shea Stadium with The Beets, Hard Nips, Juniper Rising, and Heeney, and March 24 at Sons of Essex. A list of all dates and the tour flyer below.
Their SXSW shows include the annual Aussie BBQ, and Dune Rats are only one of many Aussie bands coming over to Austin for SXSW, including Alpine, Flume, Kirin J Callinan, WIM, and others. The full list of Australian bands that will be at SXSW is below.

DOWNLOAD: BLURRY BITTERS - A CAKE SHOP BEST OF 2012 MIXTAPE (MP3)
Eddy Current Suppression Ring @ Cake Shop, June 2010 (more by Diana Wong)
One of the biggest, most genuine music fans I know is Andy from Ludlow Street indie rock club Cake Shop. He's an indefatigable listener and always turns me onto new stuff. Here we've got his "best of 2012 and live from cakeshop and recorded" which is topped by Parquet Courts' fantastic debut album, Light Up Gold. You can check out the full list of "21 AMAZING EXPERIENCES" below.
Andy is also a great maker of mixes, and I stil put in one he made for the Cake Shop/Slumberland 2009 SXSW showcase from time to time. Over at the Cake Shop blog, he posted a 2012 mix loaded with great stuff that you can download above and see the tracklist below. Highly recommend. Cake Shop had a successful Pledge Music campaign this year, signed a new 10-year lease, survived the Great Sandy Blackout, and I can't wait to see more bands there in 2013 (like maybe Obits on January 19) and beyond.
Andy from Cake Shop's Best of 2012 list and mixtape tracklist are below...
