In 1974, former Byrd Gene Clark released his fourth solo album, No Other, a critical and commercial failure that earned increasingly more recognition over time and was received much more warmly upon its reissue in the early 2000s. Now, just about 40 years later, an indie supergroup will be performing the album in full on a short tour of the Northeast US. The band features both core members of Beach House, Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally, with Victoria handling vocals along with Robin Pecknold of Fleet Foxes, Daniel Rossen of Grizzly Bear, Hamilton Leithauser of The Walkmen (and newly a solo artist), Iain Matthews of Plainsong/Fairport Convention, and Jenn Wasner of Wye Oak/Flock of Dimes/Dungeonesse. They'll be backed by members of Lower Dens, Celebration, Mt. Royal, and others. The full lineup (with mention of who's playing what) is below.
The tour kicks off in Philly on January 22 and it ends in NYC just a few days later at Music Hall of Williamsburg on January 25. Brad Truax (Spiritualized, Interpol and others) will be DJing at all shows and a Gene Clark documentary will screen beforehand too. Tickets for the NYC show go on sale Friday (12/6) at noon.
All dates are listed, along with the full supergroup lineup, a trailer for that Gene Clark documentary, and a full stream of No Other, below...
Labor Day is past but it's still technically summer and Union Pool is running its free Summer Thunder series every Saturday through the end of the month. This weekend's show (9/14) is being presented by Secretly Canadian and is a bit of a mystery. Gentlemen Jets headline, and there's also a slot for ".?." We do know that Martin from Brazos will do a solo set (Jessie from Luyas was supposed to play with him, but she had to cancel), and J.Ek from Wye Oak side project Dungeonesse will do a DJ set, as will D.Jane Gherkin, and Bear in Heaven's Adam Wills. The party starts around 2 PM with live bands going on later in the day.
Then on September 21 it's DJ Dog Dick, I.U.D. and DJ Dago with more to be announced. September 28 will be the season finale, that they aren't announcing yet. Stay tuned.
MP3: John Grant - Black Belt (Dungeonesse Remix) (MP3)
Grant in his new home of Iceland
As mentioned, John Grant will release his new, electronics-infected album, Pale Green Ghosts, on May 14 via Partisan. He's just released a remix of album track "Black Belt" done by Dungeoness (aka Jenn Wasner of Wye Oak's latest project). You can download it above or stream it below.
While Grant has a European tour on the way, he currently only has one North American date scheduled which happens in NYC on April 25 at Le Poisson Rouge. Tickets for that show are on sale now. All tour dates are listed below.
Grant now calls Iceland his home (Biggi of Gus Gus produced part of his album) and has become enamoured with local artist Ásgeir Trausti. He has helped Ásgeir create an English-language version of his debut album, Dyrd i daudathogn, which recently won four Icelandic Music Awards. That version of the album will be out later this year via One Little Indian. You can check out a live video below.
Speaking of that label (also home to Bjork and Ólöf Arnalds), One Little Indian will release Stone Beads & Silver, the new album by Irish musician Marc Carroll, next month. You can check out the video for "Fool Disguised in Beggar's Clothes" below and catch him live when he plays NYC at Rockwood Music Hall on March 5. No advance tickets for that one. His only other US date scheduled at the moment is in LA.

Jenn Wasner's (Wye Oak, Flock of Dimes) most recent musical endeavor, Dungeonesse, will release their self-titled debut album on May 14 via Secretly Canadian. The R&B-ish dancepop project, a collaboration with Jon Ehrens of White Life, released a single last year, you may recall. Says Wasner of the project, "Something that Jon and I talk about a lot is the idea of reclaiming pop music; placing it squarely in the hands of, I dunno, say a couple of regular nerds from Baltimore."
You can check out new track "Shucks" below. Cover art and tracklist are below too.
You probably know Jenn Wasner as one half of Wye Oak or from her Flock of Dimes solo project, and now she's teamed up with Jon Ehrens (of White Life and Art Department), who she's played with before for a new synth pop project, Dungeonesse. Dungeonesse will release their "Drive You Crazy" b/w "Private Party" 7" on December 4 via Secretly Canadian and a full length will follow in 2013. You can pre-order the 7" HERE.
The video for the a-side of the new single and its very '80s cover art, below.
