Stillwell Stage photos by Dominick Mastrangelo

"To close out the night, fans had the option of checking out Matt and Kim at the main stage or Holy Fuck at the alternate stage. The choice was clear, I went with the latter, and they easily turned out to be my favorite performance of the night. Their weird, intellectualized sound came to the forefront for the masses to witness firsthand and it's quite the process. With film reels rolling and making glorious sounds, lead singer Brian Borcherdt sporadically took the mic, shoved it between his teeth, and danced just as hard as any of the onlookers. It was clearly the most-lively show of the night. Holy Fuck as a satisfying headliner for the bill was a question on many people's minds, so the band had some expectations to live up to, but they totally thrived on those exact expectations and exceeded them tenfold. Even though the event was fully sponsored/curated, Holy Fuck performed in all aspects with the heart of any DIY performer." [Neon Musical Insight]Our first set of Siren Festival pictures had a bit from both stages. Then came the main stage with some bonus shots of Matt & Kim in the ocean. We conclude with all the bands from the Stillwell Stage, with some more of Ted Leo from the main stage, and one more bonus shot of Matt & friends in the ocean, below...

Twi

there is legend and rumor of a new interstellar adventurer, by the name of twi, who came to be by the will of an ancient sorcerer forest existing unknown in a nameless galaxy. those aware of this rumor say twi seeks the wisdom of vast green worlds, as well as the sating secrets of sound. inspired by the adventures of this new mythical character, the trio 'twi the humble feather' compose guitar and vocal based music depicting environments recently visited by twi; such as magical castles and forests, and various realms of the uncharted cosmos.Saturday, Sept 6 at Sound Fix Records in Brooklyn, 8pm:
The Burg for Barack - a grassroots fundraising event featuring La Strada, Twi the Humble Feather, and Amber Rubarth. Plus a cupcakes-and-brownies-galore bake sale, and a silent auction including fine apparel, jewelry, yoga classes and spa packages, and more from stylish neighborhood boutiques and stores. 100% of the proceeds go to the Obama campaign. $5 suggested donation at the door.Brooklyn acoustic guitar-and-voice trio Twi the Humble Feather is coming off a series of opening gigs for Jose Gonzalez earlier this summer and the release of their sci-fi/fantasy concept album "Music for Spaceships & Forests" in June (out on non-label Friendly Ghost Recordings). The FGR site reports that the band is in the process of prepping a new piece for live performance called "Twi Presents the Antek Songs," as well as its second album. Other upcoming shows include opening for Japanese popster Shugo Tokumaru at Mercury Lounge (tix still on sale), a show at Williamsburg DIY gallery/space Paris London West Nile, and a free Wordless Music Series gig at (le) poisson rouge.
Speaking of Obama benefits and (le) poisson rouge, the West Village venue ia hosting a fundraiser of its own on September 10th. Living Colour, The Family Stand, Earl Greyhound, Danielia Cotton, and Viva Mayday are on that bill.
These aren't the first Obama events of the year, and they certainly won't be the last. Another, The Audacity of Jokes II, takes place Monday September 15th at Comix. It will feature Fresh Prince creator Andy Borowitz, SNL's Fred Armisen, comedian and Barack impersonator Kyle Grooms, Last Comic Standing alum Amy Schumer, and Weird Al surrogate Jonathan Coulton. Tix $45 ($100 VIP).

Earl Greyhound @ All Points West (more by Jefferson)

In additon to the previously announced record-taping shows coming up in September, Earl Greyhound are playing a free show at Southpaw in Brooklyn this Wednesday night (Aug 20, 2008). Smokewagon and Changing Holes are also on the bill.
Also on Wednesday, also free, possibly the show of the week (please don't rain): WFMU presents,
The Ex with Gétatchèw Mèkurya (renowned Ethiopian saxophone legend), and if that weren't enough, Lincoln Center added two amazing East African/American collaborations to the bill: Either/Orchestra with Mahmoud Ahmed and Alèmayèhu Eshèté, plus Extra Golden.Also free, also thanks to WFMU: The NYC stop on Wire's October tour. September 3rd is the day to get tickets.
back to this week: Huey Lewis in Coney Island
and Friday: Grand Archives and Violens at South Street Seaport.
Aug 29th @ South Street Seaport:
"Oneida, Endless Boogie + VERY SPECIAL GUEST"
Who is the special guest? I have no idea, but if Endless Boogie can be considered a clue, there's a really good chance it will be a band on Matador Records. Speaking of which, Matador's Yo La Tengo are playing the very last McCarren Pool Party in Brooklyn on Sunday August 24th. That would be kind of cool and weird if Yo La Tengo played the Pool and the Seaport both in less than a week.
That's it for now. Take a look at the free show calendar for much, much more, but not THAT much more because unfortunately the free show season (aka Summer) is soon coming to an end. Summerstage is already done now that Sharon Jones played and actually I just realized that the Bill Withers tribute was the final 'Celebrate Brooklyn' show in Prospect Park this year too.

Ghostland Observatory @ ACL, 2007 (CRED)

I couldn't believe it when Ghostland Observatory was headlining (and sold out) Bowery Ballroom, and I couldn't believe it even more when they were the biggest thing ever in the world at Austin City Limits this year - they headlined one of the stages (right before Bob Dylan played on another stage) on the last night of the festival, and you couldn't get within a mile of them - they are HUGE (in their hometown of Austin at least).
I sort of got into them for the first time there too - even though I was tired, couldn't get anywhere near them, etc - I felt like under the right circumstances - it could work out between us....He can sing, and it's definitely danceable. (ok, I like them, I'll say it)
Tickets are on sale for an October 19th CMJ Ghostland Observatory show at Webster Hall.
Over the summer, Spank Rock and Ghostland played the same party at McCarren Pool. Spank Rock likes to dance on top of computers. Spank Rock is also playing CMJ. October 19th @ Irving Plaza:
* Spank RockIs it safe to assume that the theme of this CMJ showcase is related to the fact that all the groups have at least one African American musician in them? Whatever it is, it's hot. No tix yet.
* Noisettes
* Yo Majesty
* Earl Greyhound
* Santogold
* The Apes
Yo Majesty are also playing Highline Ballroom with Islands and Trail of Dead. Yo Majesty are also playing an unannounced BrooklynVegan party.
