Wormrot

Singapore grind trio Wormrot, who released one of my favorite LPs of 2009 (which has since been reissued by Earache this year), will play Santos Party House on September 2nd alongside Order of Ennead (members of Deicide, also Earache), Mobile Deathcamp (which features Beefcake of GWAR) and Skull Crusher. Tickets are on sale.
Cannibal Corpse will play Santos on Nov 19th with Dying Fetus, Vital Remains, and Devourment. Tickets are on sale. The show is one of two at Santos for Devourment, as the band will also support Cattle Decapitation a month prior (10/18, tickets).
Merauder has been added to the previously discussed Inside Out show at Santos on August 14th (tickets).
Early Man will headline Europa on 10/10 with an assist from a pair of other Earache bands, Evile and Bonded by Blood. Tickets are on sale. The band is on the run promoting their new LP Death Potion, out now via The End.
Revocation and Misery Index will support Despised Icon at their last ever NYC show alongside The Judas Syndrome and Everything's Ruined at Europa on 9/11. Tickets are on sale. Misery Index released Heirs to Thievery earlier this year via Relapse. Full tour dates for the whole trek is below.

Early Man

Priestess couldn't make it, but Early Man, Naam and La Otracina still played sets at The Charleston on December 12th. More pictures from that show below...

Priestess at Webster Hall, opening for Pentagram (more by Toby Tenenbaum)

Priestess are prior to, um, Prior to The Fire, their NEW LP for their new home, Tee Pee Records. The band released Hello Master in 2005, and are prepping the new joint for a 2/2/10 release, though the record was completed more than a year ago:
The record was completed in the fall of 2008... and we were extremely proud, everyone involved, of what we've done and checked it in the label and it was the same story again. 'Well look guys, we can see that you love this and it's a great new direction and you guys have matured, but we still don't hear a song that we want that we can use as a single. Can you guys continue to write more songs?'Shockingly peaceful actually!... read more about it at ChartAttack, and download the first track (single?) above. And we were basically like, 'Uhh... No. This is it. We've got a good record here and we don't want to do anything forced.'
You can't force write a single, it's impossible to do that. At least it's impossible for us. We're not Tin Pan Ally songwriters; we're a rock band.
Priestess and RCA Records decided to go their separate ways. But unlike the long and nasty splits between band and label you always here about, the break between Priestess and RCA was actually peaceful.
Priestess will join Early Man and Naam at The Charleston on Saturday, 12/12. It's one of a few remaining dates before the end of the year.
Naam recently posted part one of their ongoing tour diary from the road with Priestess and Early Man. Dig on that here. Remaining Priestess dates and the show flyer are below...

Om @ Europa

On the eternal quest towards enlightenment, Om played Europa on 10/11 as part of a four band bill that included Ben Chasny solo project Six Organs of Admittance, Lichens, and Naam. Though Om is traditionally a duo, the new (and in my estimation, interesting) direction on God is Good sees the band going outside of their traditional roles, and as such Robert Lowe of Lichens joined them on stage to embellish with percussion, guitar, keys, and tons of effects. NYCTaper was on the scene, and recorded the entire show for your enjoyment. Get that here.
If you happened to miss Europa, then you have a few chances to catch all of the bands in the coming weeks. First up, Om, Six Organs of Admittance, and Lichens plays NYC again (Bowery Ballroom) tonight (10/13). Tickets are still on sale.
The remaining band from the Europa bill, Naam is playing a ton of shows in the coming weeks including the BrooklynVegan-BBG Day Party at Fontana's on 10/23! Full dates for Naam are below, which include Iron Age at The Charleston on 10/17, the Tee Pee/Chronic Youth Day Party on 10/22 at Cake Shop with Priestess, Nebula, Hull, and others, as well as their official showcase at Union Pool on 10/23 with Priestess, Weird Owl, Nebula, Quest For Fire, and many more.
Outside of Om, the duo are staying plenty busy. Al Cisneros will be at Le Poisson Rouge on 11/15 with Shrinebuilder (who recently added Rwake and Liturgy to the bill) while Emil Amos will be back for CMJ to play with Holy Sons.
More pics and video from the Om show, and Naam tour dates (that also include some December Priestess and Early Man dates), below....

Javelina @ the Northside BV-BBG Showcase (more by Jason Walker)

Alright! I get it. Doomriders rules. Revocation is up there. There's a new Converge and Baroness on the way. But even with all of those great releases, it suprises me that Javelina isn't near some of the top of those lists. The band's filthy debut was a monster and their new one, Beasts Among Sheep, only adds to their considerable reputation. If you are a fan of the last LP, this one is a must have. Dig on "Stepchild" above and preorder the limited edition LP version of Javelina's Beasts Among Sheep via Brutal Panda Records and the CD version via Translation Loss.
Speaking of that Doomriders album, Darkness Come Alive is out NOW via Deathwish Records. Though the party vibe that permeated through Black Thunder is mostly gone, it has been replaced by a propulsive punk rock fury and, at times, a Misfits-era Danzig croon (see "Come Alive")! There are quite a few killer moments on this long-player, but we present to you the most "fuck you" of them all, the galloping "Lions" downloadable above!
In our last round up, we shined a light on into the deepest fathoms of Australia and the truly frightening Portal. The band's claustrophobic and positively frightening new death metal LP, Swarth, relies as much on freak-out atmosphere as it does killer discordant riffery. Swarth is due out on 10/20 via Profound Lore and we have a second taste in the form of "Omenknow" above.
Misery Index have completed four new songs and are looking to enter the studio in early 2010 to record their follow up to Traitors! Stoked.
Iron Age @ Cake Shop (more by Jason Walker)

I still remember that kick ass Cake Shop show with Iron Age, Mind Eraser, and Sex Vid, and walking out of that show wanting more. Thankfully, I can add to those great memories with a PAIR of Iron Age shows in the coming weeks! First up, the rowdy Texans will team up with the great Mother of Mercy (profiled here) for a show at Cake Shop (10/16). The next day (10/17), look for the band to pull a double header with a day show at Generation Records and a night show at The Charleston with Brain Killer, Naam & Descender. Speaking of Mind Eraser, the band will team up with the kick ass Iron Lung for a string of east coast dates which will include Cake Shop on 11/8! Full Iron Age and Iron Lung dates are below.
Black Skies will release the limited edition vinyl from their 2008 EP Hexagon on I'm Better Than Everyone Else Records. The Chapel Hill doom trio is currently on the hunt for drummer #5, but not before blessing us with some seriously killer riffage in the form of "Smoke & Mirrors" above. Preorder Hexagon here.
Power Pellut is also releasing their debut LP via I'm Better than Everyone Else Records. Preorder that here and dig on "Black Betty" from that LP above!
Church of Misery will release a live record culled from their recent set at Roadburn 2009! More details are to come, but look for Burning World to do the honors in November/December of this year. In the meantime, dig on this killer live video from Roadburn 2009!
That video, news on Kowloon Walled City, Boris, Asphyx, Struck By Lightning, Ringworm, Repulsion and more!

Valient Thorr @ Roseland, (more by Chris LaPutt )

Valient Thorr will make their return to Brooklyn on April 26th at Trash Bar! There are no advanced tickets - $10 gets you in. The show is just one of a gang of shows for the Thorriors, who have been forced to roll solo after Early Man dropped off of their tour:
Unfortunately, due to an arm/back injury that I [ed: vocalist/guitarist Mike Conti] suffered after our last tour, we have had to cancel all of our tour dates this month with Valient Thorr so I can get some much needed rest. We will hit the road again after this month and all summer long in support of our new full length which will come out this summer. -[myspace]Early Man also revealed the name of their new album, Death Potion, due later this year on their new label The End Records. Their Beware The Circling Fin EP dropped late last year.
Valient Thorr released Immortalizer and the In Heat DVD in 2008.
This isn't the first time that VT and EM have toured (or not toured) together. The pair played Bowery Ballroom together last year (VT pics here, EM pics here).
Full VT tour dates, including a pair with Turbonego and Zeke (!), and videos below..

Kylesa opening for Amebix, (more by Justina Villanueva)

SXSW is upon us, and as such, so is the list of metal luminaries appearing in Austin! Check out the full list here, which includes Wolves In The Throne Room, Rwake, ASG, Pelican, The Lord Weird Slough Feg, Absu, Wildildlife, Rwake, and many many others!
In other news, one of those SXSW bands, Kylesa, will drop Unknown Awareness, the first single from the upcoming Static Tensions (due March 17th), via Hyperrealist. Limited to 1,000 copies with 400 on colored vinyl, we'll let you know when pre-orders hit the web, but in the meantime, dig on the recently dropped "Said And Done" also from Static Tensions available for download above!
After more than fifteen years in existence, black-metallers Ulver, will make their live DEBUT at the Norwegian Festival of Literature on Saturday, May 30 in Lillehammer, Norway. With a little luck, they'll realize what they've been missing and hit the road.... but probably not.
As we discussed last week, Gnaw is the terrifying new project from Alan Dubin (of ex-Khanate & OLD fame), Jamie Sykes (ex-Burning Witch), Carter Thornton (Enos Slaughter), Jun Mizumachi (ex-Ike Yard) and sound designer Brian Beatrice that meets at the corner of noise, metal, and dark ambient. Their debut, This Face, is due on 2/20 via Conspiracy Records, but the band has dropped off a taste of it in the form of "Feelers" available for download above!
If you're hankerin' for a hunk 'o Hammerhead and Melvins, Hex Machine have your fix twofold. The Richmond quartet (which once included skinsman badass Dave Witte) are preparing to drop their NEW record, Omen Mas on Feb 24th via their own imprint, Minimum Underdrive! Check out the severely kick-ass "Hook & Eyes" available for download above, and pick up Omen Mas from the band or at one of their shows, which include a date at The Charleston on March 11th with Dysrhythmia and Pollution! Full tour dates below.
Outlaw Order is playing Europa on March 24th. Tickets are on sale.
The "Agorapocalypse Now" is upon us.... the new track by Agoraphobic Nosebleed is streaming at their myspace.
Dysrhythmia (photo by Justina Villanueva)

Speaking of Dysrhythmia, the band is currently hard at work on their fifth full-length, Psychic Maps! Colin Marston (bassist, mem of Krallice) will engineer the effort at his Menegroth studio in Queens, where he'll track six songs clocking in at around 40 mins. Dysrhythmia recently played Union Pool with Tombs.
Hardcore Canucks Buried Inside have posted a pair of tracks from their upcoming full-length LP Spoils Of Failure, due on March 3rd via Relapse. Recorded at Godcity Studios with go-to man Kurt Ballou (Converge) and mixed at Red Room Recordings with Matt Bayles, check out "II" streaming at their myspace and download "V" above!
Lots of show news to report... Unearthly Trance has added a show at The Charleston on March 19th; Drunkdriver, Liturgy & Pollution are at Silent Barn on March 6th; Withered at Union Pool on April 16th; the always charming Seth Putnam and AxCx has scheduled a show at Europa with Anal Blast & Rumplestiltskin Grinder, (tix here); Wizardry will record a show at Union Pool for a live LP (flyer below).
Red Fang, featuring ex-mems of Facedowninshit and Bad Wizard, will release their self-titled debut on Sargeant House in March, and the band is hitting the road with Early Man in celebration, including TWO NYC area dates.... March 2nd at Maxwell's and March 4th at The Studio @ Webster Hall. Tickets for Maxwell's are on sale. In the meantime, dig on "Prehistoric Dog" available for download above and the accompanying video below... as Week In Metal continues...

DOWNLOAD: 16 - "Skin & Bones" (MP3)

Downtrodden miscreants 16 have dropped off a new track, "Skin & Bones" from their upcoming Bridges To Burn due on Jan 20th via Relapse. Made of the Drop Out era lineup, 16 will tour their native west coast in the new year and ready reissues of Blaze Of Incompetence, Drop Out, Curves That Kick, and The Early Years, a collection of rare 7's and B-Sides. In other news, Ex-16 guitarist Phil Vera is scheduled to kick out the jams with powerviolence badasses Despise You at Maryland Deathfest.
The Dillinger Escape Plan have "loosely set aside" June and July 2009 to record their new album. In a myspace entry entitled "Blogzilla" (they ain't kiddin') the band also had this to say:
We're writing, ...recording with Steve Evetts, ...we've got Australia booked for late Feb/early March, and we'll more than likely be doing some stateside stuff as well around that time, maybe some US shows before we go down under, we'll see.Impacting imminently, "astronaut metallers" Rosetta will headline Death By Audio in Brooklyn on Dec 6th with mighty Tombs, Junius, Moving Mountains, and Battilus. Wanna go? We have one pair of tickets to give away. Details on how to win at the very end of this post.
Tombs recently dropped off of the bill for the Don Cab show at Europa, but they are still on for Maxwell's AND have added a matinee at ABC No Rio on Feb 21, 2009 with Black Anvil and Woe. Meanwhile, Batillus will also be on hand to open Withered when they damn the stages of Europa on Dec 19th with Inswarm. Tickets are on sale. Withered was captured on video by Metalkult when they opened for the black metal horde Watain.
Genghis Tron, Knife Hyts, and Kayo Dot will triple-team Death By Audio on Dec 20th.
Napalm Death have revealed more details about their upcoming follow-up to the triumphant Smear Campaign. Time Waits For No Slave spans fourteen tracks, including the currently streaming "Diktat", look for it to drop on Century Media on Feb 10th with a cover that looks sorta like this. In the meantime, dig on the tracklisting way below and video of the band grinding their way through "Diktat" and "On The Brink Of Extinction" in the video below, shot on 11/22/08 in Leeds, UK. Barney from ND was recently interviewed by Rock Sound, and the band are scheduled to play the new record during a hometown show in Birmingham, UK on January 31st.

Lords... and they're angry! Typocracy)

I bid you good day kind sir and m'lady! May I also say Fuck All Y'all Motherfuckers! That is definitely one album that I have had on blast all this week... the new record by spazzy Louisville hardcore freaks, Lords! Check out "Blasphemy Act" from Fuck All Y'all... currently streaming over at their myspace. Of course it isn't all gravy for dem Kentucky boys. Let's cut to the chase:
Matt Jaha will not be playing bass in the band anymore, and rather than cancel the upcoming tour Eric and I decided to do it as a two piece...I just get some more amps to make up for the bass...Check out the long version for a tale that includes flailing fists, and flying guitar cabinets. The band is searching for a suitable replacement who must "be able to play the songs". Sounds reasonable. Best of luck, my dudes.
The mighty Anaal Nathrakh have finished writing their new album, the follow-up to the critically-lauded Hell is Empty, and All the Devils are Here from 2007! Mick Kenney is currently shaping the songs in the studio and hopes to have V.I.T.R.I.O.L.'s vocals done in February for an album release in June of 2009...
Victims

Deathwish has signed one of my favorite crusty European bands, Victims! Look for the band to re-release Killer on Deathwish later this year.
As we discussed earlier, Jarboe dropped Mahakali while Early Man dropped Beware The Circling Fin on The End Records. Want 'em both? Email BVCONTESTS@HOTMAIL.COM (subject: Early Jarboe) and win one of three sets of BOTH the Early Man EP on 10" vinyl and the Jarboe CD. Include your first and last name, winners will be contacted. Meanwhile, dig on Jarboe's "The House of Void" available for download above.
Whaaa? A surprise Saviours show at The Charleston?
Tickets for the previously mentioned Kreator tour that will swing through Nokia Theater on April 8th go on sale 11/01 at noon.

The mythical, mystical Jarboe drops her latest spiritual spiral into darkness, Mahakali, on The End today (10/14). Featuring appearances by Attila Csihar (Mayhem, sunn 0))) collaborator), Phil Anselmo (Pantera, Down, Superjoint Ritual), Josh Graham (Neurosis, A Storm Of Light, Red Sparowes), and Kevin Hufnagel (Byla, Dysrhythmia),check out "The House Of Void" by the ex-member of Swans available for download above! The rest of Mahakali is available for streaming at Rhapsody and for sale in one of two limited edition versions with exclusive tracks.
The new Jarboe is one of two noteable releases due today on The End, the other being Early Man's new EP, Beware The Circling Fin. Mike Conte of Early Man sat down with the Metalsucks guys and dropped off an MP3 of "Sinking The Blade" for download.
sunn 0))) will be in town on Oct 15th (wednesday) with Tony Conrad & Thou (sold out). Don't expect to see Attila however, the sunn 0))) shows are to commemorate the 10th anniversary of The GrimmRobe Demos.
Jarboe doesn't have any upcoming shows scheduled at the moment. Early Man has a few...

Hmm.... who's guitar rig could this be?
In his own special way, Stephen O'Malley dropped a bunch of news on his upcoming projects via a detailed discography. SOMA posted the following unreleased, unannounced records:
SUNN O)))So, TWO new sunn o))) records, a Khanate, AND an Æthenor record! We knew that sunn 0))) was working on a new record, but a quick search turned up that Blast First (Petite) will drop that sunn 0))) and Pan Sonic pic 10". On further review, Æthenor's website reveals the following:
Che (SUNN O))) & Pan Sonic do a Suicide cover, pic 10" 2009)
Dimensions (TBA) (2xCD & 2xLP 2009)Æthenor
Faking Gold & Murder (CD & LP 2008)Khanate
Clean Hands Go Foul (LP & Picture Disc 2008, CD & CD Japan 2009)
David Tibet sings and contributes lyrics on the forthcoming Æthenor album; other guests are Kristoffer Rygg (Ulver) and long time Æthenor collaborator Alexander Tucker [who just played ATP].Most importantly though, what the hell is that Khanate record Clean Hands Go Foul?!? Stephen O'Malley had this to say:Tentatively titled 'Faking Gold and Murder' from a line in the text, Æthenor is the project of Sunn O)))'s Stephen O'Malley, Vincent de Roguin (Shora) and Daniel O'Sullivan (Guapo)
The long lost 4th KHANATE album Clean Hands Go Foul will finally emerge later this year. This was recorded directly after the Capture & Release album at Bisi Studio Brooklyn February 2005.James Plotkin, bassist for Khanate, posted one unreleased song excerpt to his website, "Wings From Spine" which is downloadable above. Will "Wings" appear on Clean Hands Go Foul? Who knows, but in the meantime prepare for the thundering evil doom of the mighty Khanate! On a related note, Plotkin's Khlyst, is taking orders for Chaos Live, a multicamera live DVD shot at Hydra Head's CMJ show in 2006. While you're there, pick up Boris's limited-to-1000 Floorshaker 12".
Mastodon's Brent Hinds had a little run-in with King Khan over the weekend, and while we have heard King Khan's side of the story, ridiculous pictures included, we haven't heard a peep from Brent Hinds. My thoughts echo that of one astute Blabbermouth reader: "The real victim here is the beer". Brann Dailor of Mastodon was recently interviewed by Metal Injection.
Justin Broadrick (Jesu, ex-Godflesh) dropped a bombshell of sorts.... a new project, Grey Machine, featuring Aaron Turner (Isis), Diarmuid Dalton (Jesu), and Dave Cochrane (Transitional)! From the upcoming album Disconnected, the band posted "Vultures Rise" available for download above!
Crom is back on the west coast, but evidence from their east coast killing spree is popping up all over the net. Check out pics from their show in Worcester, MA at Return To The Pit, an interview with a shirtless Crom at Vice magazine, as well as audio (and video below) from their appearance at WFMU.

photos by Chris La Putt

Long hair, chest hair, facial hair, and even ass hair, Chris described Friday night's show (July 25, 2008) at Bowery Ballroom as one of the most energetic shows he's seen...that there just weren't very many people at (relatively speaking - Bowery Ballroom holds 600 people). Maybe everyone was at Ween? (maybe Valient Thorr just isn't that great) (then again, Chris said they were awesome) (Monotonix playing like 5 shows that week was probably a factor too...).
Valient Thorr was the headliner. Their next NYC show will be opening for Motorhead. The rest of the pics from their Bowery set are below....

This year did not exactly begin on a high note for Mike Conte. In January, his band, Early Man, split from Matador, their label of three years, following a somewhat disappointing run. The breakup, for those who pay attention to these types of things, shouldn't come as much of a surprise: The pairing of a retrograde thrash-metal act with the imprint behind Cat Power and Belle & Sebastian was on its own enough to spark up the ol' authenticity debate, riff unheard. [The Village Voice]Black Bubblegum wrote, "Early Man have announced that they have signed with The End and will release a new EP this fall produced by Jack Endino! Early Man is currently on the road with Valient Thorr and [played] the Bowery with Monotonix on July 25th." More pics from that Bowery show below...

Intronaut is about to get prehistoric on dat azz, when the new LP Prehistoricisms (full tracklisting below) hits the shelves on September 16th via their new label Century Media. Metalkult has a preview in the form of "Australopithecus" which is downloadable at their site. .
Tickets are still on sale for their show at Knitting Factory on August 8th with Behold The Arctopus, Mouth Of The Architect, Deadsea, and Wetnurse (one helluva bill). Mouth Of The Architect drops Quietly this week and Wetnurse drops Invisible City on September 30th. Deadsea's S/T record is out now, catch it at their myspace. "Prehistoricisms" album art there to the right.
I have heard from a very credible source that the mighty sunn 0))) will return to NYC to play a special show in celebration of the ten year anniversary of The Grimmrobe Demos. Um, yowsers. As details come in, you'll get em.
Sweden's Burst have posted two new tracks from and announced a release date for (September 16th in the US) their new record Lazarus Bird. Dig on "Cripple God" and "(We Watched) The Silver Rain" streaming at their myspace. The band has commented "Expect an album that will NOT be Origo Part 2, but something new", and if this is any indication, should be a good 'un.
Speaking of good 'uns, the Bowery Ballroom show on July 25th featuring Early Man, Valient Thorr, and the mighty Monotonix should be a grand ole time. Wanna get in gratis? Sunday night (July 13th) at their BB King's show, Strong Island's own Suffocation confirmed it's participation in Carcass's "Exhume To Consume" tour (as we reported earlier). So let's recount, shall we? That makes Carcass, Suffocation, Necrophagist, & Aborted, but there are also rumors circulating that Rotten Sound (who still haven't confirmed) and 1349 are on board as well, bolstered by Sonar's (a club in Baltimore, MD) advertisement for "Carcass, 1349, Aborted, Rotten Sound, and special guest TBA". Considering that Necrophagist & Aborted have been confirmed for the tour, that should round out the lineup. We'll keep you posted, but just the thought of Carcass, 1349, Suffocation AND Rotten Sound... yikes. Sounds awesome.
Early Man have announced that they have signed with The End and will release a new EP this fall produced by Jack Endino! Early Man is currently on the road with Valient Thorr and are scheduled to hit the Bowery with Monotonix on July 25th. Tickets are still available. Tour mates Skeletonwitch have added a few headlining dates around the Early Man tour, including one at the Knitting Factory on July 26th with the mighty Titan and Krallice. Tickets are on sale. More Skeletonwitch headlining dates below. Skeletonwitch hits the road this fall on the Blackest Of The Black tour. Also available over at Metalkult, footage from their April show at BB Kings.
The mayhem-inducing Gaza have announced they will head into the studio, "hoping" to have their new record out in October. Gaza released their last record, the critically acclaimed I Don't Care Where I Go When I Die in 2006. Me = stoked.

Monotonix getting crazy at Death By Audio (Tod Seelie)

Triumphant denim-vested metal warriors Valient Thorr will join Early Man and Monotonix on the stages of Bowery Ballroom this July 25th. Tickets are on sale. Full tour dates are below.
Last time the Valient Thorr was in town, they opened for The Sword at Bowery, but since then Valient Himself has been a little busy:
Just want to thank everyone all over the world for the positive vibrations...Valient Himself donated his kidney to his ailing father. If you can, pick up one of their limited edition shirts, where 100% of the proceeds will help recoup some of the costs for the surgery. They look like this:

Unfortunately, the obituary (not the legendary band) section for this week is way too big. Modern Life Is War has called it a day, their recently announced spring tour will be their last. Prog-metal legends Voivod have announced that their next LP for The End, constructed by riffs left behind by Dennis "Piggy" D'Amour, will be their last. Piggy succumbed to colon cancer in 2005. Current members Snake, Away, and Jasonic (aka Jason Newsted, ex-Metallica), will join ex-members Blacky and E-Force to put together the final 13 songs, and possibly do some farewell shows.

TURBONEGRO @ WEBSTER HALL (couresy of SPIN)

Webster Hall was only 50-75% full for the Turbonegro show. That makes it awesome because there's tons of room to move around.
If my hadn't lost my pictures, they might look something like SPIN's. (SPIN, don't get mad at me for using one)
Astro Zombie wrote this review of the show and the club:
"These homos know how to rock.
I saw them play last night at Webster Hall, which I think is actually one of the best venues in the city. Webster Hall is a strange place, really. Its popular with the Bridge and Tunnel Trash crowd on the weekends, which is especially odd considering that the whole place has a creepy, Addams Family feel to it. The ballroom is a somewhat separate area, and while its not a particularly large stage, it has a great balcony and a bleacher area to the left of the stage. The walls are decorated with faux-art deco artwork, but it manages to give the feeling of an older theater that's been gracefully brought into modern times..." [Atomic Zombie]

TURBONEGRO

"@#$@#$@#%#@$@#@@!"
That was my reaction when I got home from the Turbonegro / Early Man show @ Webster Hall last night (Oct 11, 2005) and my computer claimed my camera's memory card was blank (again). Long story short, my photos are gone forever. #@$#@#@! See above photo and know why it sucks even more than, for instance, if I lost pictures of the Shins.
A few of the Turbonegro songs were fun, but mostly their schtick seemed old. They called the Strokes whores, and dedicated Sell Your Body to the night (click to download MP3) to them.

Though I missed at least half their set, I liked Early Man. I don't listen to a lot of new metal, so I'm not really qualified to say how they compare to what's currently out there. Regardless, they sounded good, and Matador thought they were good enough to sign. They're a new metal band, but they aren't "new metal." Coolfer called them neo-metal. I'd compare them to Black Sabbath and early Metallica. Oh My Rockness say they slay.
Their album ("Closing In") came out this week.
