Gavin [Van Vlack]: Everything is very instantaneous now, and you can access almost anything with the flick of a finger. Not to sound pretentious, but there's a craftsmanship that goes into songwriting and the performance, and that's what separated Burn from other bands. We crafted our songs differently than other people did theirs. Everything; from the way we dressed, to even our social conscience was just our own.Back in February, NYC hardcore festival Black N' Blue Bowl (happening 5/16-17 at Webster Hall) announced what was supposedly the full 2015 lineup, but it turns out one more band was added: Revelation Records vets Burn.
Chaka [Malik]: Plus hardcore itself just lets you express emotions and feeling that otherwise maybe aren't safe to display or even access.
Gavin: This whole thing is a catharsis; for the band and those coming to the show. For someone, this is going to be their first Burn show...maybe their first hardcore show, and I don't want to let them down.
Chaka: I want whoever's there to have something to remember...something to take away. With the other bands playing, I'll partake on the other side of that window. It's a transaction for everybody. [Noisey]
Burn put out their now-classic self-titled EP on Rev back in 1990, then split a few years later before regrouping to release its followup, Cleanse, in 2001 on Equal Vision. The following year they put out their previously-unreleased 1992 demo Last Great Sea on Revelation, and soon after disbanded once again. Now original vocalist Chaka Malik (also of Orange 9mm) and guitarist Gavin Van Vlack (also of the previously-reunited Absolution, as well as The Big Collapse, Die 116 and Pry) teamed up with bassist Manuel Carrero (who played on Cleanse) and drummer Durijah Lang -- who are both current Glassjaw members -- to reunite for Black N' Blue Bowl. According to the Noisey interview quoted above, they're not sure if this will be their only show back or not, so catch them while you can.
Burn play the Sunday (5/17) with Crumbsuckers, Sick Of It All, Dave Smalley and more. The Saturday (5/16) lineup has Madball, Earth Crisis, The Regulators (mems Bad Brains, Cro-Mags) and more. Tickets for each day, and 2-day passes, are still available.
Updated BNB poster, with a stream of 1990's Burn EP, below...

Despite what you may think of latter Earth Crisis (personally not a fan), their first EP Firestorm is a classic of its time. The iconic title track, opening with its unforgettable "chug-chug" open string rhythm, set the tone for so many bands to come, reshaping much of the hardcore landscape in its time.
Now, 20 years later, Earth Crisis are celebrating the anniversary of said EP on a set of dates that include a stop at Santos Party House on July 14 with Shai Hulud (now with Chad Gilbert back in the fold), Thy Will Be Done, White Widows Pact (fka White Widows) and The Last Stand. Tickets are still available.
All tour dates are listed, along with a new White Widows video for "El Marrano" and Earth Crisis favorite "Firestorm," below.
Negative Approach at Fun Fun Fun Fest (more by BBG)
This is Hardcore returns to Philadelphia, PA for four days in August at Union Transfer (on 8/9) and Electric Factory (8/10 - 8/12). Both shows will have no barricades for you headwalkers/divers and in the case of Electric Factory, the venue will actually construct a stage in front of their usual stage (!) to get around the existing barricade. Now thats dedication/brutality.
As for the lineup, as usual the cast of hooligans gracing the stages of TIHC are a cast of notables, including Cro-Mags, Negative Approach, Gorilla Biscuits, Breakdown, Blacklisted, Killing Time, Nails, Ringworm, Gehenna and many many more. Full lineup is below and tickets go on sale on May 17th at noon.
Power Trip is part of said lineup, and reminder, the band will hit Acheron on May 15th as part of a string of East Coast dates. All tour dates are below.

You should see his Vampire Weekend tattoo!
The Black And Blue Bowl (aka Superbowl of Hardcore) is back at Studio B in 2009, with a lineup heavy on reunited and classic hardcore bands and headlined by the recently reunited Earth Crisis who, for my money, peaked with the line "A FIRESTORM TO PURIFYYYYYYYYYYYY!". Beware, similar to the previous statement, the following announcement CONTAINS LOTS OF CAPITAL LETTERING:

The Hidden Hand, Place Of Skulls, The Obsessed, Spirit Caravan, and the aforementioned Shrinebuilder all have had one thing in common, the stamp of quality by doom legend Scott "Wino" Weinrich. Now Southern Lord brings word of "Punctuated Equilibrium", aka the "Wino" solo record! Backed by skinsman extraordinaire Jean-Paul Gaster (Clutch) and Jon Blank (Rez n) on bass, the new record will be tracked by producer (and legend in his own right) J Robbins (Jawbox, Burning Airlines, etc).
Fresh off of the right & left hook known as "Sleepwell Deconstructor" and "Seance Prime", hardcore punkers Trap Them will be bobbin' & weavin' through Europe and the east & west coasts through the end of April, including a date at the Charleston on March 12th and another at The Knit on June 16th. Look for them to support the massive multi-instrument collective The Ocean and grind pioneers Extreme Noise Terror in Europe. Sprechen about Germany's The Ocean, check out their guest blog over at Headbanger's Blog and if you play cello and/or viola and feel like touring Europe & the US, email em!
