Mykki Blanco at MHOW in 2012 (more by Fred Pessaro)
I'm leaving Portugal after my performance. Please stop writing hate speech, threatening to hang me, posting pictures of slaves and leaving gay hate messages on my page, I have seen a really disturbing side of this culture tonightAnd also gave a statement to Noisey:
I was swindled, by the Portuguese police department for being a gay black tourist that is the only explanation for this situation. I had literally just got off of a plane was in the airport on my way to the art gallery I am currently doing a residency at and I was taken advantage of by the Portuguese police. More than an act of racism and prejudice or even homophobia ( which were all 3 factors) I realized that class matters and that an upwardly mobile black man isn't something people always want to see.The Noisey article also mentions he was ordered to pay a 600 euro fine.
I was arrested for telling a police officer to "go fuck himself" after I repeatedly and politely asked him where I could purchase a taxi voucher since he worked with the taxi attendant at the airport. the altercation escalated because I waited in a long line like everyone else outside the airport for a taxi and when I was told by the taxi attendant that I could not use my credit card but only cash the taxi attendant and cop refused to help or answer any other questions I had about an alternative in anyway. They were impatient and short with me all the while eagerly helping white tourists who were behind me in line while I waited to be addressed.
A Portuguese woman in the same taxi line with me even leaned over and whispered "I don't know why they are being so strange with you, there is a place inside to buy taxi vouchers you don't need cash". I should have listened to the woman and went inside myself to find the voucher office but there is apart of my personality that really wants to see if people WILL actually be prejudiced, to see if maybe my PC west coast optimism about the world is being challenged by blatant discrimination and I was right. I asked the police officer where the voucher office was and I was told to "go away" like I was nuance as if I had not waited in the same line as all the other white tourists and when I asked why he could not help but could gladly help the other tourists I was yelled at and told to "go away bicha" which is a gay slur, even though I had waited in the same line as everyone else.
The world aint a fair place, and the idea of a young successful black guy doesn't always fly everywhere but I was insulted, and discriminated against so I said "Fuck you" and walked away...well he followed me inside, used his radio to call other police causing a scene in the airport and told me "You are under arrest" I said "excuse me, I have not committed a crime, I asked you for help and you refused to help me" he said "You have insulted a police officer and that is a crime in Portugal, you can't talk to me that way" and he arrested me.

Wavves @ East River Park - 8/25/2011 (photo by robotgobot)
Though last night's Wavves show went on as planned, and was even dry, Saturday & Sunday's performances of "Henry V" are cancelled (they were set to take place on the same East River Park stage). You can however catch the same Shakespeare show in East River Park on Monday (as of now).
Wavves & GZA
"MTV has just announced that fuzz-rock band Wavves will serve as the guest composer for the first season of the network's new scripted comedy series, "I Just Want My Pants Back." In addition, music legend Nic Harcourt will serve as music supervisor for the series. The pilot episode, which is airing as a sneak peek following the "2011 MTV Video Music Awards," on August 28, at 11 p.m. ET/PT, will feature the exclusive world premiere of their new song "I Wanna Meet Dave Grohl." The series will officially debut on MTV in January 2012. .Despite the nasty weather, as of 4:000pm, the Dee Dee/Wavves show in Manhattan's East River Park tonight (8/25) is still on. Dee Dee goes on at 7. The show is rain or shine.
Wavves' new EP, "Life Sux" will be released by Wavves' label Ghost Ramp on Tuesday, September 20th and features "I Wanna Meet Dave Grohl," as well as collaborations with Best Coast and members of the band F*cked Up.
As guest composer throughout the MTV series, Wavves will have 20 original compositions as well as songs from their unreleased EP. Following the sneak peek on Sunday night, viewers can visit www.soundtrack.mtv.com for a free download of "I Wanna Meet Dave Grohl" and a list of all Wavves songs featured in the show.
From acclaimed director and executive producer Doug Liman ("Mr. and Mrs. Smith, "Swingers," "Go," "Bourne Identity") and based upon David J. Rosen's critically acclaimed novel of the same name, "I Just Want My Pants Back" follows a group of friends as they navigate the minefield of their post-collegiate years. The series will feature 12 half-hour episodes.
Struggling with sex, love, career and friendship as a young twenty-something living in Brooklyn, the series follows Jason Strider, played by Peter Vack. Jason puts hanging with his friends, going to bars and hooking up above his entry level job where he's the lowest rung at a casting agency, and dreams of being in music journalism...but has no idea how to get there. It's not until a one night stand steals his heart and his pants, that he begins a quest to get his beloved jeans back, and hopefully the girl, while also growing up along the way.
The series also stars Kim Shaw as Jason's best friend 'Tina;' Jordan Carlos as 'Eric' and Elisabeth Hower as 'Stacey,' college sweethearts making it go of it as couple as they forge into their adult years; Sunkrish Bala as 'Bobby' the owner of the local bodega and will guest star Chris Parnell as 'J.B.,' Jason's no-nonsense boss at the casting agency.
"I Just Want My Pants Back" is based on the book by David J. Rosen. The series a co-production with Universal Cable Productions. The pilot was written by Rosen and directed by Doug Liman. Justin Levy, Clay Spencer and Polly Auritt are the executives in charge of production for MTV. Executive producers include Liman, David Bartis and Rosen. Gene Klein is co-executive producer.
Also, be sure to catch Wavves backing up GZA, the legendary founding member of the Wu-Tang Clan, on Fuel TV's "The Daily Habit" tonight at 8pm PST / 11pm EST. They will be performing GZA's classic tune "Liquid Swords"."
Feel like staying dry? You can head to Long Island on September 9th instead, or wait until Wavves returns to NYC as part of a tour with Fucked Up that has the two bands at Webster Hall on Saturday, September 24th.
More dates TBA soon. All dates and new EP tracklist and cover art below...
DOWNLOAD: Dum Dum Girls - "Coming Down" (MP3)
Dum Dum Girls at Bowery Ballroom in March (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Last month we announced that Dum Dum Girls are releasing Only In Dreams (named after the Weezer song?) and touring in support of the album this fall with Crocodiles and Royal Baths. They've since revealed the album cover and the lead single. The track is titled "Coming Down," which makes sense considering they were getting high earlier this year. Grab the MP3 above. Cover art below.
You'll also have a chance to catch Dum Dum Girls' frontwoman Dee Dee play a solo set in NYC even sooner though, and for free at the Wavves show in East River Park (8/25 at 7pm).
Updated tour dates and album art below...
"SummerStage, a program of City Parks Foundation, presents performances of outstanding artistic quality, free of charge, to serve the diverse communities of New York City. The artists represent a breadth of genres and cultures and perform in an outdoor setting accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds. SummerStage strives to develop audiences' deepening appreciation for contemporary, traditional, and emerging artists as well as the communities in which these artists originate."You might remember that since last year, "Summerstage" now encompasses free (and "benefit") shows in many NYC parks, not just at the "main stage" in Central Park. Free shows this summer include Friendly Fires, Wavves, The Budos Band, Reggie Watts, Fitz & the Tantrums, We Are Scientists, Talib Kweli, Rakim/EPMD, Medeski, Martin & Wood, Jim Gaffigan, Wanda Jackson, Imelda May, Guster, and many more.

Wavves's Nathan Williams is a modern day renaissance man. Besides being a guitarist/songwriter and a weed connoisseur, Williams is also a comic book author and has penned a twelve part series with friend Matt Barajas and illustrator Nicholas Gazin. Pitchfork says that,
According to an email from Gazin, "Negative Dad is like an extra retarded X-Men. There's heshers, evil parents, cat people, juvenile delinquents with partially functioning mutant powers, aliens, dreams."That's Negative Dad art above.
There will be at least 12 issues, and according to Gazin, it will possibly come with a cassette. He says, "This is going to be our gift (although it will cost money) to people who enjoy pot. Put the tape on, put in a beanbag chair in a space small enough to get clambaked and just read the comic and stare at the pictures and chuckle at the pictures while your friend plays Nintendo and eats all your Pirate Booty or something."
Maybe you can find copies of the comic at Wavves' merch table on tour. NYC'ers will have two chances to find out this summer. First, when Wavves plays the Northside Fest with Guided By Voices at McCarren Park Stage on 6/18 (tickets), and then at a free Summerstage show at Manhattan's East River Park Ampitheater on 8/25 at 7pm (enter at Delancey Street bridge over the FDR Drive and walk south or via Cherry St/Jackson Ave entrance into Corlears Hook Park and over the FDR Drive bridge leading directly to the ampitheater).

Central Park Summerstage (more by Chris La Putt)
The schedule for the 2010 SummerStage series, which has music not just at Central Park, is out, and there are some great looking shows to highlight.
At Central Park, the first "rock" show happens on Saturday, June 5th with Living Colour, Ebony Bones!, Pillow Theory and CX KiDTRONiK. Baaba Maal, who just played Irving Plaza, will be at Central Park too on Monday, June 14th The Tinariwen show on Saturday, June 26th also features Syrian beat & mikeman Omar Souleyman. Gil Scott-Heron plays Central Park in June and Marcus Garvey Park in August.
There's also El Guincho, Bostich and Fussible and others in Central Park on July 7th. Reggae legend Jimmy Cliff plays Central Park on Sunday, July 11th. Raphael Saadiq performs there Saturday, July 17 at 3pm. The Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni Ba/Fool's Gold show on Sunday, July 25th will also feature "West African electronica" band Burkina Electric.
On Wednesday, July 21st, there'll be a Comedy Central's The Daily Show and Friends Central Park gig hosted by Lewis Black with John Oliver, Rob Riggle, Wyatt Cenac, Adam Lowitt and Rory Albanese.
There's also music from St. Vincent, Tune-Yards and Basia Bulat on August 1st at Central Park. The xx play with Jack Penate and Chairlift there on August 8th. At the same spot, Public Enemy play an August 15th day show to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Fear of A Black Planet, and the Specials play on August 22nd with Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears and $mall ¢hange.
There's lots of great jazz too: McCoy Tyner plays with Ravi Coltrane, Esperanza Spalding and Francisco Mela as part of the CareFusion Jazz Festival on June 23rd. He also plays in the Charlie Parker Jazz Fest, which comes at the end of the summer with an incredible lineup. McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Scott, Jason Moran and the Bandwagon and Revive da Live play during the day at Marcus Garvey on Saturday, August 28th. Then the next day, James Moody, Catherine Russell, Vijay Iyer and The JD Allen Trio play at Tompkins Square Park.
The park benefit shows include John Butler Trio and State Radio on June 15th (tickets on sale), The Flaming Lips on July 26th, The Black Keys with the Morning Benders on July 27th and 28th, Hot Chip/Hercules & Love Affair/Holy Ghost on August 4th, Govt' Mule on August 11th (tickets), and one of the four Pavement shows September 21-24. Plus there's a "songbook of Simon & Garfunkel" benefit on June 8th.
Not all "Summerstage" shows are in Central Park anymore which drives home the point even further that the name of the venue in Central Park is actually "Rumsey Playfield" which hosts non-"Summerstage" shows too. Those so far include Coheed/Torche, CAKE, Ween, and Broken Social Scene.

this guy is in Anthrax (more by Chris La Putt)
"We want to apologize to our fans who came out to the Red Bull event last night in the hellish cold to see us play. Originally, we were to go on just before 9PM and play for 45-minutes. One of the snowboarding events ran very late which caused us to delay the start of our set. That, and a curfew we were not informed about until 9:30PM snowballed into an unfortunate situation that was beyond our control . As we were walking to the stage, we were instructed to cut our set to three songs, and no one was more surprised than us when they cut the PA before we could finish the third song. We are particularly mortified that this happened when our good friend, Chuck D, had just taken the stage for "Bring the Noise". We extend our apologies to him.
Nothing like this has ever happened to Anthrax before, and we regret that it happened last night. Thank you to those who came out to support and once again our sincere apologies"

Valient Thorr bundled up, a snowboarder & Chuck D w/ Anthrax
Over the last three weeks, a massive snowboard ramp has risen in East River Park, in the shadow of the Williamsburg Bridge. Nine stories tall and 150 yards long, it required more than 100 workers to build, and it has lured 16 of the world's top professional snowboarders to compete in Thursday's Red Bull Snowscrapers, billed as the largest urban snowboard event in North America. That NY Times article came out before yesterday's event (2/5). Musical guests included Valient Thorr (seen above bundled up after he/they played) (and who are performing again tonight/Friday in Brooklyn), Black Gold (who play/DJ again outside today/Friday at South Street Seaport), and "Anthrax" who were joined by Public Enemy's Chuck D (as seen above). Bring the Noise.
Riders, including the 2006 Olympic snowboarding gold medalist Shaun White, Travis Rice, and Terje Haakonsen, will zip down the ramp and soar 50 feet while performing aerial maneuvers before touching down on either side of a 36-foot-long ramp. A panel of judges will rate the best moves and style. The winner will get $50,000 of a $100,000 purse. [The NY Times]
