Band Aid

It's Christmas time and there's no need to be afraid...unless you're scared of charity singles. Then maybe it is. Bob Geldof's Band Aid is 30 years old this year and to celebrate they've re-recorded "Do They Know It's Christmas?" (co-written by Midge Ure) with a whole load of new pop stars, including Sam Smith, Elbow's Guy Garvey, Chris Martin, Jessie Ware, One Direction, Disclosure, Ellie Goulding, Seal and more. A few of the original's performers have returned for this one, including the recently-injured Bono, who finds himself in the exact same place in the song. With a bit of a lyrical rewrite. His line was easily the original's most infamous, horrible lyric, "tonight, thank god it's them instead of you" but he now sings "tonight we're reaching out and turn to you." Oh, that's better.

The song is available to buy on iTunes and proceeds go to help fight Ebola. Will we get Live Aid 30 in 2015? Stay tuned. The video for "Do They Know It's Christmas? (2014)" debuted on The X Factor and you can watch it, and check out the full list of performers, below...

Sam Smith at Bonnaroo 2014 (photo by Amber North)
Sam Smith

While soccer fans watched the World Cup play out on a jumbotron at the Kalliope stage, [Sam Smith] attracted Bonnaroo's youngest, hippest, style-conscious attendees at The Other Tent.

Smith's debut album, "In the Lonely Hour," entered the U.K. charts at No. 1 last month, and it looks to make a big splash when it hits U.S. stores on Tuesday. Like few other acts on this year's bill, he's very much a star of the moment. A suave, British soul singer, laying smooth falsetto melodies over '80s-tinged funk and R&B - just a few short years ago, it would have been considered the opposite of hip. The tide has obviously turned. [The Tennessean]

Bonnaroo went down over the weekend and among other things featured one of the biggest US crowds British pop singer Sam Smith had yet to play to. The Disclosure collaborator played the stripped version of their collaboration "Latch" (which appears in that form on his new album), his own hits ("Stay With Me," "Leave Your Lover"), and covered the Arctic Monkeys' "Do I Wanna Know?," a song that band opened their set at the same festival with two days later. (MS MR also covered it during their Bonnaroo set.) Sam also joined Disclosure during their 'Roo set just hours later and performed "Latch" once again. You can watch a video of Sam's Arctic Monkeys cover, with his setlist from the festival, below.

Sam's tour hits NYC for a sold-out show at The Apollo tonight (6/17) and returns to NYC in September for shows at United Palace (tickets) and Hammerstein (sold out).

Sam will be sticking around NYC this week, doing a record signing at Rough Trade on Thursday (6/19). You just need to buy his record that day to get a wristband for the 6 PM event.

Another Disclosure collaborator Jessie Ware announced that her new album would be out at some point this year via PMR/Friends Keep Secrets/Interscope and told Pitchfork it features collaborations with Miguel, Ed Sheeran, Julio Bashmore, Dave Okumu, Kid Harpoon, James Ford and Nineteen85. Its first single "Tough Love" is out now, and it's a more laid back single as far as Jessie Ware songs go with an almost James Blake-like quality to the chorus. This one was produced by BenZel, aka Two Inch Punch (who produced Sam Smith's "Money On My Mind") and Benny Blanco (who's written/produced huge songs like Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream" and Maroon 5's "Moves Like Jagger").

Listen to that, with the Sam Smith stuff, below...

England's Glastonbury Festival is pretty much the forefather to all crazy worldwide "20,000 people standing in a field" festivals we have today. The 2014 edition goes down June 27 - 29 in Pilton, UK and the lineup was just announced. It includes Arcade Fire, Jack White, Dolly Parton (!), Elbow, Disclosure, Bryan Ferry, Massive Attack, Pixies, M.I.A., Dexys Midnight Runners, Kasabian, Lily Allen and loads more. The festival's already sold-out. A few more acts -- including one more headliner -- is still to be announced but lineup as it stands is below...

Sam Smith, Louis CK, and SNL's Nassim Pedrad

UK singer Sam Smith is no longer "the dude who sang on that Disclosure song," having already sold out Webster Hall this year and has a debut album, In the Lonely Hour, poised for release in May. You can check out the video for his gospel-inflected new single "Stay with Me" below. He may fully blow up after this weekend when he'll be the musical guest on Saturday Night Live (3/29) with host Louis CK. You can watch some promos for this week's SNL below.

SNL has also announced their next two hosts and musical guests: the April 5 episode will be hosted by Ana Kendrick with musical guest Pharrell, and then on April 12 it's host Seth Rogen and musical guest Ed Sheeran.

Halloween
Peelander-Z at Brain Cave Festival 2013 (more by Dylan Johnson)
Peelander

Happy Halloween! As you might imagine, there's many Halloween-related shows tonight, including a number of cover shows, and of course the Village Halloween Parade! Browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight's spooky shows (and the regular ones too). Here are some highlights...

Holy Ghost!, Joakim, Midnight Magic, Eli Escobar, Lloydsky @ Terminal 5
They've certainly got the right name for a Halloween show. HG! should have T5 movin' with their '80s style New-Order-at-Danceteria jams. Tickets are still available.

Yamantaka // Sonic Titan, Jenny Hval, Tanz Praxis ft. C.Lavender @ Basilica Hudson
Yamantaka // Sonic Titan come in costume no matter what show they're playing, so they'll feel right at home tonight at this slightly-upstate venue. Also of note on this bill is Norwegian art pop musician Jenny Hval (who has a couple shows in NYC next week too).

Peelander Z, Ken South Rock, AEON RINGS (formerly Night Vision) @ Glasslands
Another band who always come costumed, Peelander-Z are sure to bring the party tonight. And they've gone hair metal on their new album, so if you're looking for a rowdy, super-fun, hair metal Halloween, Glasslands is the place to be.

Liturgy, Alan Howarth @ 285 Kent Avenue
"Transcendental black metal" band Liturgy are teaming up with composer Alan Howarth to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Howarth's work on John Carpenter's horror classic, Halloween.

Crystal Stilts, Excepter, Zachary Cale @ Bowery Ballroom
They are leaning more '60s psych these days, but Crystal Stilts have strong gothic streak, due in no small part to Brad Hargett's deep bellow. Look for a spooky set tonight.

Gatekeeper, Mirror Mirror, DJ Bruno (Light Asylum) @ Brooklyn Masonic Temple
For a dark, gothy Halloween dance party, head to the ominous Brooklyn Masonic Temple for these electronic musicians and DJs.

The Juan Maclean (DJ Set), Justin Strauss, Evan Michael @ Cameo Gallery
If you're just looking to dance tonight, it's hard to argue with the four-on-the-floor proclivities of the Juan Maclean. Justin Strauss, meanwhile, is a legend with more than three decades of dancefloor experience having worked with everyone from Luther Vandross to Skinny Puppy. It's a late show -- doors at 10 PM -- so you can make it if you want to keep the DFA vibes rolling after Holy Ghost!

The Dickies, Chronic Sick @ Knitting Factory
The Dickies have been making new wavey punk for over three decades, and they're still kicking.

Avan Lava, Light Asylum, Zebra Katz @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
This show's got three very different artists who should all provide very fun sets in their own way. There's the upbeat synth pop of Avan Lava, the dark Light Asylum, and eccentric rapper Zebra Katz, whose "Ima Read" is always a good sing-along at his shows.

Raime, Vatican Shadow, Silent Servant, Kiss & Tell, Further Reductions, Bethany and Alyssa @ Output
Another bill leaning towards the dark and electronic: Raime will be debuting an audio/visual set, and Dominick Fernow's (Prurient) "militant religious industrial" project Vatican Shadow is not to miss either.

Murray Hill, Andy Rourke (The Smiths) (DJ Set), Steve Lewis (DJ Set), Chicks Who Love Guns @ Passenger Bar
Williamsburg's Passenger Bar is hosts this free party with MC duties from none other than legend Murray Hill and a DJ set from The Smiths' Andy Rourke and others. There's also a costume contest for anyone dressed the the "Blood, Burlesque & B-Movie" themes.

The Body, Pissgrave @ Saint Vitus Bar
Crushing duo The Body hold court with Pissgrave tonight at what for some is the only place to be on Hallowwen

DJ Dog Dick, Lakutis, Cities Aviv, DJ Uniique, Rlly Tho & Wodge Daddy, DJ John J Rambo, DJ Kristina Tequila @ Secret Location
This show's got three artists who have no problem crossing the boundaries of hip hop, DJ Dog Dick, Lakutis, and Cities Aviv. Location TBA soon.

Buster Poindexter @ Cafe Carlyle
Maybe to get in the spirit of dressing up, New York Dolls frontman David Johansen is reviving his loungey Buster Poindexter guise tonight.

Biz Markie (DJ Set) @ Brooklyn Bowl
Questlove usually does his weekly Bowl Train party at Brooklyn Bowl on Thursdays, but for Halloween, Biz Markie is taking over the boards. And he's, he's got what you need.

Jonathan Toubin's Haunted Hop @ Secret Project Robot
This is Jonathan Toubin's annual Halloween Party, and will feature a bunch of bands performing sets as other bands like The Damned, Siouxsie & the Banshees, The Seeds, Roky Erickson and more. They aren't saying who's actually performing, but Jonathan knows a few people. Plus, JT will be spinning classic spooky 45s all night. $5 in costume, $20 without.

Gabba Ghouls, Happy Jawbone Family Band, Lust Cats, Mannequin Pussy @ Lit Lounge
Vermont psych pop band Happy Jawbone Family Band and NYC punks Mannequin Pussy are always worth catching, though for the occasion you might wanna see The Gabba Ghouls too.

World/Inferno Friendship Society @ Warsaw
World/Inferno Friendship Society do their annual "Hallowmas" show on Halloween at Warsaw.

Murphys Law, Caught In A Trap, Chesty Malone And The Slice Em Ups, Skum City @ The Trash Bar
The Trash Bar is celebrating Halloween with this show which, among other things, includes long-running NYC punk band Murphy's Law.

Ed Sheeran @ Mercury Lounge
For many of us, there are few things scarier than UK singer Ed Sheeran, who has two shows at Madison Square Garden coming up. We're not sure why he's playing Mercury Lounge tonight, but maybe he's going to show us his dark side. Tickets go on sale today at noon.

Carnivores (as B-52s), Ava Luna (as Tom Tom Club), Caged Animals (as Velvet Underground), Bueno (as Wu-Tang Clan) @ Shea Stadium
This is one of the many Halloween cover shows, but it's especially notable because it's also the only NYC stop on Atlanta garage rockers and Black Lips/Deerhunter associates Carnivores' tour. They'll be playing songs by the B-52s, but also many of their own.

And here's more of those cover shows...

Celestial Shore (as Led Zeppelin), Whoarfrost (as Nirvana), Cloud Becomes Your Hand (does Jock Jams), YOU (as Interpol) @ Silent Barn

Vulture Shit as Dookie Shit, Big Ups as Breaking Brad, Flagland as Weezer, All Nines as Buckingham Buckingham Buckingham, Low Fat Getting High as Nirvana, Butter the Children as Pixies, Palehound as Pavement @ Cake Shop

Eugene Chadbourne as Jimmy Carl Black, Evan Gallagher as Thelonious Monk, Thomas Heberer as Muggsy Spanier, Tatsuya Nakatani as Johnny Cash, Louie Pearlman as Cab Calloway, Barry Mitterhof as Jethro Burns @ The Stone

For all of tonight's shows, and tomorrow's, check out our full NYC show calendar.

For laughs, check out the NYC Comedy calendar too.
