Governors Ball 2014

NYC music festival Governors Ball kicked off its 2014 edition yesterday (6/6) with sets from the reunited Outkast, Blur/Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn, Grimes, TV on the Radio, Phoenix, Neko Case, La Roux, Rilo Kiley singer Jenny Lewis, Washed Out, Janelle Monae, Kurt Vile, Run the Jewels (Killer Mike + El-P) and still more.

Outkast's much-anticipated set (like many of their other festival sets this year) started with both Big Boi and Andre 3000 on stage for tons of favorites right off the bat including "B.O.B.," "Gasoline Dreams, "ATLiens," "Rosa Parks," "Aquemini," "Ms. Jackson," and more. Then Big Boi did three songs alone, Andre did three alone (including "Hey Ya!" for which Janelle Monae came on stage to dance), and then another Outkast set. The second set ended with "The Whole World," for which they brought out Killer Mike to rap his verse. Pictures of all artists mentioned (and more), plus Outkast's setlist and a video of "Hey Ya!" are in this post.

GovBall continues today (6/7) with Diarrhea Planet taking the stage in about two hours (12:45 PM), and other sets include Jack White, Spoon, The Strokes, Disclosure, Broken Bells, Chance the Rapper, Deafheaven and more.

Janelle Monae at The Apollo in 2013 (more by Luis Ruiz)
Janelle Monae

As discussed, Moogfest returns to Asheville, NC from April 23-27, and since we last spoke, more additions to the lineup have been made. Keith Emerson, who was already scheduled to speak during the daytime program, was added as a nighttime performer as well, in addition to Q-Tip, El-P, Saul Williams and more. Nile Rodgers, whose band Chic is performing at night, was added as a daytime speaker, as was Janelle Monae who will be "in conversation with her producers."

Updated flyer and more info on the daytime panel updates, below...

We just mentioned that Floor are releasing a new album, and now Converse Rubber Tracks have announced a FREE Floor show at Saint Vitus Bar on 1/29. Kadaver and Ruby the Hatchet will open. Though the show is free, you need to RSVP for entrance; registration starts here at 3pm today. Even if you RSVP, entrance isn't guaranteed. Show up early!

For a chance to get into that very intimate show, you have to RSVP which is open until midnight tonight (1/22), but RSVP does not guarantee entry.

Converse Black Sabbath

Converse just released a new series of Black Sabbath Chucks, which actually look pretty cool. One side of one is pictured above. All three are at Converse's site. Black Sabbath is playing Brooklyn in March and touring in April. Bill Ward won't be there, but look for him at the next Today is the Day show.

In other music-related Converse news, this weekend is the third edition of the FREE creative workshops they're holding at Rubber Tracks Studio in Williamsburg. Registration is open through 1/9 at midnight for "How to Record Live Instruments" with Benjamin Weinman & Billy Rymer of the Dillinger Escape Plan and "How To Record Using Outboard Effects" with EL-P & producer Nick Hook. Meanwhile, Converse's 'Rubber Tracks Live' series of free shows continues tonight (1/9) in Boston at The Sinclair with Joey Bada$$, Dillon Cooper, and Cavalier, and then January 16 at Glasslands in Brooklyn with The Hood Internet, Pictureplane, and Bearstronaut.

Run the Jewels at Webster Hall in August (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Run the Jewels

El-P and Killer Mike are each about to wrap up another great year, having both been active on their own and as their collaborative duo Run the Jewels. RTJ appeared in NYC a few times, including their big headlining Webster Hall show and a slot at Fool's Gold Day Off, but before 2013 comes to a close, they'll do another headlining gig in NYC at Music Hall of WIlliamsburg on December 13 with White Mandingos (ft. Murs and a member of Bad Brains) and Phony PPL. It's a Converse Rubber Tracks Live show which means it's free but do you need to get tickets, which go on "sale" Wednesday (12/4) at noon. Their only other US date scheduled for this year at the moment is New Year's Eve in Raleigh, NC.

In related news, Stereogum points to an instagram from El-P with a picture of a handwritten note of what you should not ask Run the Jewels in interviews. El-P specifies, "Do Not Ask: How we met, What we think about the state of hip hop, How we feel about other artists," then ends it with "Thank You + Good Luck!"

In more related news, El-P and Killer Mike are promising a second Run the Jewels album for 2014. In the meantime, check out their video for "Banana Clipper" (feat. Big Boi) from their self titled 2013 LP, below...

Washed Out at MHOW - 11/18/13 (via Ahnmin Lee)
Washed Out

Washed Out is currently on a tour which brought Ernest Greene & co. back to NYC for a Converse Rubber Tracks Live show at Music Hall of Williamsburg earlier this week (11/18), a much more intimate appearance than his last Terminal 5 show. His next NYC appearance will be when he DJs the J Roddy Walston show at Gramercy Theatre (12/14) (tickets). All upcoming Washed Out dates are listed below.

Speaking of Converse Rubber Tracks, they're launching a new project at the Brooklyn recording studio, CONS Project: BKN, which offers creative workshops for kids. Their "goal is push creativity forward by inspiring kids with creative ambition to unleash their creative spirit through engaging and edifying events." The workshops happen during three weekends, Nov. 23 & 24, Dec. 8 & 9, and Jan. 11 & 12. Select artists will be there, including El-P, Ryan Hemsworth, and more. Plus, El-P will headline an exclusive concert on January 24, following the workshops' final weekend. Registration is open now. More details below.

And speaking of Converse, they just made a behind-the-scenes video on the Ratking/Black Dice collaboration, which you can watch below...

Fool's Gold Records are returning with their free Labor Day (9/2) party, Fool's Gold Day Off again this year. Unlike past years, when it was held in the City Winery backyard, this year it's taking place at big outdoor Brooklyn venue, Williamsburg Park. The lineup includes Danny Brown (who also played last year), Run the Jewels (aka Killer Mike and El-P, who we just caught at Webster Hall), Migos, A$AP Ferg, World's Fair, Action Bronson collaborator Party Supplies, Duck Sauce, Unibros (special DJ set), Grandemarshall, Nick Catchdubs, #BEEN#TRILL, and "special guests." The party runs from 2 PM-10 PM, and though it's free, you do have to RSVP (entry is still first come, first served, though). Show flyer below.

Danny Brown, who just released a new track, can also be seen for free in NYC even sooner at Afro-Punk Festival (8/24-25). After Fool's Gold Day Off, he heads out on a tour with Action Bronson that ends in NJ for Rock the Bells this October.

A$AP Ferg is releasing his new album, Trap Lord, this week (8/20). The album features guest appearances from A$AP Rocky, Schoolboy Q, Bone Thugs N Harmony, and more, and it can be streamed in full at Ferg's website.

Other upcoming hip hop shows at Williamsburg Park include Kendrick Lamar (9/10) and 2 Chainz (9/15).

Run the Jewels
Run The Jewels, El-P, Killer Mike, Despot, Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire, Kool AD @ Webster Hall - 8/15/2013

Killer Mike and El-P wrapped up their Run the Jewels tour in NYC earlier this week with a Webster Hall show (8/14) that also included sets from Kool AD, Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire, and Despot. We already posted a set of pictures from that show, and we've got another set in this post.

You can also catch eXquire at Warm Up on Saturday (8/17), where he plays with King Britt, J. Cole, World's Fair, Danny Brown collaborator Darq E Freaker, and more (tickets).

El-P & Killer Mike / Despot aerobics @ Webster Hall, 8/14/2013
Run the Jewels - Webster Hall, NYC - August 14th, 2013
Despot - Webster Hall, NYC - August 14th, 2013

Performing their free album in just about its entirety, taking one break in the middle to perform 2012's "Tougher Colder Killer" with Despot, it stands a strong argument for how great the album's sequencing is--it translated perfectly to a live setting. While after five weeks there were a few signs of wear-and-tear in the sound of Mike and El's voices by the end of the night, this fatigue at no point showed in their energy and effort on-stage. Their set also had the added bonus of surprise guests in the form of Company Flow DJ Mr. Len contributing cuts to "Get It" and Prince Paul reprising his Chest Rockwell character for "Twin Hype Back."

El-P's been performing in New York for about two decades now. He loves this city, and by now knows exactly how to get it to love him back. He's also known how to evolve his own live set over the years and assemble a line-up that, despite the complexities of the music itself, performs at such a high rate that it's perhaps even more accessible than its recorded output. As a result, Webster Hall collectively lost itself while being whipped into an absolute frenzy. In nine years of attending New York hip-hop shows on a regular basis, crowds like last night's are rare. But perhaps, that's because so are the performers. - [Village Voice]

Run the Jewels (aka Killer Mike & El-P) wrapped up their tour last night (8/14) at Webster Hall. It was a packed house, even for the openers, and in addition to performing their free Run the Jewels album (which featured an appearance by Prince Paul as "Chest Rockwell," El-P and Killer Mike both performed solo sets. The night also featured Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire, Despot (who brought out the whole tour posse for aerobics), and former Das Racist MC, Kool A.D. Pictures from the whole hip hop show are in this post.

Run the Jewels, who we also recently caught at Pitchfork Fest, have their own flavor of Goose Island beer. I don't think that particular flavor was available at the show last night, but free Goose Island was flowing in the balcony where BrooklynVegan was co-hosting a party with DoNYC, El-P and Mike in honor of the collaboration. Related note: today was kind of rough.

If you missed the Webster Hall show (or can't remember it), Mr. MFN eXquire will be at Warm Up at MoMA PS1 on Saturday (8/17) with King Britt, J. Cole, Bangladesh, Darq E Freaker, World's Fair, Star Eyes and JubileeTickets for Warm Up are still available.

In related news, an interviewer asked El-P and Killer Mike what they thought of the infamous new Kendrick Lamar verse, and naturally their response was great. Watch/listen to what they said with the rest of the Webster Hall pictures below...

Killer Mike at Pitchfork Fest 2013 (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Killer Mike

As discussed, Killer Mike and collaborator El-P have teamed up as the duo Run the Jewels, the name under which they released a free album back in June. That duo are also on a tour this year that hits NYC on Wednesday (8/14) at Webster Hall with Despot and Kool AD. Since we last spoke, Brooklyn rapper Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire (who has opened for them before) has been added to the show as well. Tickets for the Webster Hall show are still available, and we're also giving away a pair. You can enter our contest on Facebook for a chance to win.

Exquire also plays NYC even sooner when he plays Warm Up at MoMA PS1 on August 17 with King Britt, J. Cole, Bangladesh, Darq E Freaker, World's Fair, Star Eyes, and Jubilee. Tickets for Warm Up are still available.

Updated dates are listed, along with a download widget for the Run the Jewels album, below...

Pitchfork Festival - Day 3 - 7/21/2013
Pitchfork Festival - Day 3 - 7/21/2013
Pitchfork Festival - Day 3 - 7/21/2013

After entering with a robed choir behind him, R. Kelly starts stringing together his hits, medley style. A verse, a chorus, and then on to the next. Songs about "getting freaky in the club," the kitchen, the car, wherever. Kelly was the subject of a years-long investigation over child-pornography charges, but was eventually acquitted in 2008. None of that appears to matter to anyone left in the park tonight, as one of the largest crowds in Pitchfork history flocks to check out the dominant R&B performer of the last two decades. The Union Park crowd reaction isn't quite as over-the-top as that of his typical audience, but the dancing continues to escalate until the set peaks with "When a Woman's Fed Up" and the stepping songs "Happy People" and "Step in the Name of Love," accompanied by white balloons. Kelly saves "I Believe I Can Fly" for the encore, and this time white-dove balloons fill the sky. [Chicago Tribune]
Pitchfork Music Festival 2013 wrapped up on Sunday (7/21) with its most hip hop heavy day, including sets from rappers El-P, Killer Mike, Lil B, and Tree, plus rap producers TNGHT and Evian Christ (who both happen to be Kanye collaborators). And not exactly rap, but in that real there were also sets from MIA and obscure up-and-comer R. Kelly. It wasn't all hip hop though. Sunday also gave us sets from Foxygen (whose singer, Sam France, continued his streak of climbing at festivals), Yo La Tengo, Waxahatchee, Autre Ne Veut, Glass Candy, and more. Pictures of the final day of the festival are in this post.

If you haven't been keeping up with our coverage of Pitchfork festival, day 1 pictures and review are HERE, and more pictures are HERE and HERE. Day 2 pictures and review are HERE and more pictures are HERE. Day 3 pictures continue below...

El-P in Austin in 2012 (more by Tim Griffin)
El-P

As mentioned, Killer Mike and El-P, who previously teamed up with El-P produced Killer Mike's 2012 album R.A.P. Music and when Mike rapped a verse on El-P's Cancer for Cure, are teaming up again this year under the name Run the Jewels. The duo will release a "free album and limited edition items" this June via Fool's Gold. The first song from the album, "Get It," should appeal to anyone who liked "Butane (Champions Anthem)" or "Tougher Colder Killer", and the way they're quickly trading verses here sounds like they're having even more fun than before. You can download that one above or stream it below.

Killer Mike is currently on tour with Big Boi (and he just brought out El-P at their Brooklyn Bowl show), but when that tour ends, Run the Jewels will go on their own tour. Support on that tour comes from El-P and Killer Mike's past tourmate Despot and ex-Das Racist member Kool AD. It culminates in NYC with a show on August 14 at Webster Hall. Tickets for that show are not on sale yet but you can check ticketmaster for updates.

All dates are listed, along with the song stream, below...

Big Boi at Brooklyn Bowl - 4/24/13 (via @therealbigboi)
Big Boi

"That's what we call the appetizer portion of the set. We just gettin' started," said Big Boi at Brooklyn Bowl last night (4/24) after playing huge OutKast hits like "Rosa Parks," "ATLiens," his own big one, "Shutterbug," and a ton of others. It's the kind of material a different artist might have saved for the encore, but Big Boi doesn't waste any time getting the party started. He kept the whole show on that level for the entirety of the (approximately) hour and a half set, and with 20 years of quality material, Big Boi can do that kind of thing. The place was totally packed with people cheering, singing, and dancing all night. And the crowd's spirits were as high as everyone's on stage, Big Boi's excellent live band included. They played a ton of other OutKast favorites throughout the set too, including "Bombs Over Bagdad," "Ms. Jackson," "So Fresh So Clean," standouts from his 2010 solo LP ("General Patton, "Fo Yo Sorrows"), standouts from his 2012 LP ("Apple of My Eye," "Lines"), and of course, the sort-of solo cut, "The Way You Move."

Big Boi brought out tourmate/frequent collaborator/fellow Dungeon Family member Killer Mike a few times during the set, including during the song that put Killer Mike in the public consciousness, "The Whole World." (A video of that one is below.) He didn't, however, come out during "In The A," which the two rappers just released a remix of as part of their tour mixtape, which features every track where both Big Boi and Killer Mike appear (download above, stream below). On that mixtape, Killer Mike says he and Big Boi have an album in the works.

Killer Mike's opening set was short but all-killer, kicking off with "Big Beast," the riotous opening track off last year's R.A.P. Music. It quickly got the crowd going... but not enough for Killer Mike's standards, because it wasn't until he encouraged everyone to move in and go wild that the place really set off. And whipping out his Bone Crusher/T.I. collab, "Never Scared," didn't hurt either. Mike's set included other highlights from R.A.P. Music too, like the highly political "Reagan," which he performs a cappella. And though he usually prefaces it with a speech about the government, his mic got cut off right when he started (conspiracy theories abound!). He also brought out El-P, who produced all of R.A.P. Music, to rap his verse on "Butane (Champions Anthem)." Killer Mike and El-P are currently working on a new collaborative project called Run the Jewels (Big Boi's reportedly involved too). You can stream a snippet of a new song from that below.

All song streams, video, and another instagram picture of last night's show, below...

Killer Mike in Austin in 2012 (more by Tim Griffin)
Killer Mike

Atlanta rapper Killer Mike spent a great deal of 2012 on the road in support of that year's excellent R.A.P. Music album, and though he doesn't have a 2013 tour scheduled at the moment, he does have a bunch of festival appearances coming up. He'll head to Texas this March for 35 Denton followed by SXSW, and will also be at Sasquatch!, Bonnaroo, Primavera Sound, the Black Hippy-headlined Paid Dues Festival in San Bernardino, the just-announced ten-day Ottawa Bluesfest (he plays on 7/10 with Weezer, Passion Pit, Animal Collective, El-P and others), and he will be near NYC in July for Camp Bisco. Bisco tickets are still available.

However, if you want to see him actually in NYC and much sooner than that, you can enter Scion A/V's Twitter/Instagram contest (instructions and details HERE) to get into the Killer Mike show Scion is presenting on March 20 at Public Assembly with Two-9 and Morri$, as part of the same series that A$AP Rocky just played. Entering Scion's contest is the only way to gain access to the show.

All Killer Mike dates are listed, along with the Public Assembly show flyer, below...

Cannibal Ox

Harlem underground hip hop duo Cannibal Ox made their live return this year at Knitting Factory Brooklyn after a long hiatus, and once again promised they'd finally release a followup to their 2001 debut, which has been delayed multiple times. Now, Can Ox member Vast Aire has taken it one step further and launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for their new record and Iron Galaxy Clik Records, the label that the duo plan to launch and release the new album on. The Kickstarter page reads:

Cannibal Ox is launching their own label Iron Galaxy Clik (IGC) Records and have reunited for their long awaited sophomore album. Cannibal Ox has already completed their first leg of their tour and funding will help us with videos, more US and International touring, the label, our spring 2013 single entitled "GOTHAM {OX CITY}" and most importantly the completion of the album. Instead of complaining about the quality of hip hop, make a change and support a real movement. 100% of your pledges will go to the funding of the sophomore album of Cannibal Ox, new videos, touring support, marketing and promotion, street teams (physical and digital), and production budget for other featured artists on the album. This label and album is 10 years in the making and needs the fans support to bring it to life.
In November, the duo said they were working with producers Bill Cosmiq and Melodious Monk on the album, rather than El-P, who produced their debut and said in 2011 that he'd never produce another Can Ox album. But that was then, and now we're living in a post-apocalyptic time where even new My Bloody Valentine albums get released, so fingers crossed that El-P and Cannibal Ox can work things out.

Head over to Kickstarter to help Cannibal Ox reach their goal, and check out the campaign video below...

Passion Pit at MSG earlier this month (more by Dominick Mastrangelo)
Passion Pit

Camp Bisco is known for a long history of booking jam bands and dance music, but has branched out in recent years. This year's lineup has an especially interesting slew of non-jam. The festival goes down from July 11 to 13 at the Indian Lookout Country Club in Mariaville, NY and features Passion Pit, Animal Collective, Toro y Moi, El-P, Killer Mike, Baauer, Dan Deacon, Com Truise, Ryan Hemsworth, Flosstradamus, Bear Mountain, Free Energy, RL Grime, VHS or Beta, and others, including of course The Disco Biscuits, who run the festival.

Camp Bisco happens about a month after Passion Pit and Animal Collective both play Bonnaroo in Tennessee, Passion Pit plays Firefly in Delaware, and AnCo plays Governors Ball in NYC.

3-Day general admission passes for Camp Bisco are on sale now. Full lineup below...

Gorge
, the internationally acclaimed concert venue carved in the basalt cliffs high above the Columbia River Gorge in Quincy, WA.

No he doesn't rap, but his voice can be heard (the "demo excerpts") amongst the beats and movie samples.

The mix is called "Everybody On My Dick Like They Supposed To" and that's the cover art above and you can stream it below....
