Sun Kil Moon

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight's shows, but here are some highlights...

Teenage Fanclub, Honeyblood, Saint Rich @ Pier 84 at Hudson River Park
What a treat -- Glasgow guitar pop practitioners Teenage Fanclub are stopping in NYC on their way to this weekend's Merge 25 festival for this free show. They haven't made a new LP in four years but with eight records worth of great songs to choose from, they are not lacking in options. Opening are a much younger Scottish band, Honeyblood. Did we mention it's free?

Veruca Salt, Battleme @ Bowery Ballroom
Oh, the tough choices of the '90s-loving NYC music fan. Teenage Fanclub's onetime DGC labelmates Veruca Salt, now back with their original lineup, play their first NYC show in many many years. You'll likely hear a bunch of new tracks from their forthcoming new album, but there's no way they're not gonna hit with "Seether" and "Number One Blind." Both tonight's show and their MHOW show on Friday are sold out.

Oathbreaker, Cult Leader, Young and in the Way, Badr Vogu, Meek is Murder @ The Acheron
We at BV are proud to present this show which includes three killer bands on Deathwish's roster -- Oathbreaker, Cult Leader and Young and in the Way -- plus Badr Vogu and solid locals Meek Is Murder. Oathbreaker are from Belgium and make melodic hardcore/screamo, while Cult Leader feature 3/4 of Gaza and basically pick up where that band left off. YAITW will provide metallic hardcore, Badr Vogu will bring sludge, and Meek Is Murder will supply the mathcore.

Sun Kil Moon @ Town Hall
Mark Kozelek has years of excellent slowcore and folk behind him, and this year's lyrically heavy Sun Kil Moon album is one of the best of his career. Mark's played solo shows a few times in NYC over the past few years, but this one's SKM full band and should be a special night.

Nickel Creek, Secret Sisters @ Prospect Park Bandshell
Modern bluegrass group Nickel Creek are back after a 7 year split with their first album since 2005 and a bunch of live shows this year. This one's free.

Bold, Give, Clear, Intent @ Saint Vitus
New York youth crew hardcore vets Bold were initially around in the '80s and early '90s. They're now back (with their 1989 lineup), and ahead of their appearance at Philly's stacked This Is Hardcore they'll squeeze in this hometown-area show.

Lost in the Trees, Doe Paoro, Stranger Cat @ Baby's All Right
Lost in the Trees' new album saw them bringing some moodier electronics into their indie folk sound. Local openers Doe Paoro and Stranger Cat (Cat Martino's electronic-tinged project) should fit the bill with LITT's new sound well.

Yumi Zouma, Rush Midnight, Celine Dijon (DJ), Katie and Dustin (TBC) DJ @ Baby's All Right
Yumi Zouma's debut EP came out back in February on Cascine and, like a much of what's on the label, their airy pop is part '80s soft rock, part '80s synthpop. Which should fit well with Rush Midnight. This is a free show.

Crocodiles, Christines, The New Lines @ Death by Audio
Bi-coastal fuzzrockers Crocodiles are putting the finishing touches on their new album, so expect to hear some new songs tonight. This is a solid bill, with Christines (Swervedriver-style miasma rock) and The New Lines (krauty baroque a la Broadcast).

The Wytches, Monograms @ Mercury Lounge
UK trio The Wytches concoct a brew that mixes raw-throat punk, stoner/doom psych, and Bad Seeds swagger, with perhaps just the tiniest hint of Wicker Man folk. Tonight's their first NYC show, and they'll play Glasslands on Friday.

Thao @ MoMA
The MoMA Nights concert series looks like a pretty chill way to see some post-work music, with bands playing in the museum's sculpture garden. This week: the multitalented Thao Nguyen who will be playing solo (sorry Get Down Stay Down fans). Free with museum entry.

Old 97's @ Stone Pony
Celebrating 20 years as a band this year, alt-country vets Old 97's showed they still have some shit to kick with their new album, Most Messed Up.

Electric Six @ Asbury Lanes
Electric Six are essentially a one-joke band -- off the charts ego/bravado/innuendo over danceable rock -- who've managed to milk it across 10 albums. Whether you had enough after "Danger! High Voltage!" or still dig the schtick, E6 are always a fun live show.

Band of Horses, Midlake @ Capitol Theatre
Band of Horses keep kicking out their big-sounding indie folk, and for this tour they're joined by solid likeminded band Midlake, who will be playing acoustic.

Sick Feeling, Gayer, Tell @ Trans Pecos
Don Devore's (Ink & Dagger, Amazing Baby, etc) new punk band Sick Feeling wrap up their residency at Trans Pecos tonight. It's with Gayer, aka Dev Hynes (Blood Orange) and frequent collaborator Samantha Urbani, as well as Tell who recently remixed Sick Feeling.

Alabama Shakes @ Terminal 5
Alabama Shakes bring their rootsy blues rock back to NYC tonight for this show which is free as long as you entered Mercedes Benz's contest and gained admission.

Kastle, Sweater Beats, Lindsay Lowend, Figgy @ Output
Output's weekly INPUT party continues tonight with Drake remixer Kastle, Sweater Beats (who just opened for Flume in NYC), Anamanaguchi remixer Lindsay Lowend and house producer Figgy.

Quarterbacks, Lobby Art, Fozzal, Maxo @ Shea Stadium
Quarterbacks make scrappy twee that's readymade for college house shows, which this may feel a bit like tonight.

For all of tonight's shows, and tomorrow's, check out our NYC concert calendar.

For laughs, check out the NYC Comedy calendar too.

What else?

Neutral Milk Hotel @ P4K Fest 2014 (more by Dominick Mastrangelo)
NMH

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight's shows, but here are some highlights...

Neutral Milk Hotel, Circulatory System @ Prospect Park Bandshell
While Jeff Mangum hasn't released any new music since 1998's In The Aeoplane Over the Sea, nobody really seems to mind now seeing how he and NMH are finally playing shows again, and many people are getting to hear those songs live for the first time. Following this past winter's shows, he and the band now return to NYC for a victory lap at these two outdoor Celebrate Brooklyn! shows, which sounds like a nice place to hear the classics.

Arto Lindsay, Zs, Bigyuki @ LPR
Downtown scene vet Arto Lindsay has long dabbled in tropical sounds so it should come as no surprise to see him playing this show as part of Brasil Summerfest.

FREEMAN (formerly Gene Ween) @ Mercury Lounge
With his long-running band a done deal, the artist formerly known as Gene Ween released his new solo album today via Partisan. He's got a soft spot for '70s pop on the new album which is an enjoyable listen. He celebrates the album's release tonight at this show.

Joyce Manor @ Rough Trade
Joyce Manor's new album is out today, and it combines the forceful punk of their debut with the more ambitious leanings of its followup, all without crossing the 20-minute mark. This is an early evening in-store (they go on at 7 PM and you have to purchase the album from Rough Trade to get in), so that plus their knack for short songs should give you plenty of time to catch another show afterwards.

Juicy J, Project Pat @ Terminal 5
Juicy J is a veteran of hip hop thanks to his time in Three 6 Mafia (remember, he been rich since the '90s), but he doesn't act like an elder statesman. The trap rap bangerz on last year's Stay Trippy are as fun and modern as many of today's younger stars.

PHOX, Trails and Ways @ Knitting Factory
Wisconsin indie pop outfit PHOX combine sunny melodies with folky arrangements (and honeyed, breathy vocals) for a sound as airy as a summer breeze. This is their first of two NYC shows this week.

Brody Dalle, Slothrust @ Bowery Ballroom
Brody Dalle put out three records of solid grunge punk in the early 2000s with The Distillers. This year she's got our first solo album out, but from the looks of recent setlists she's been treating her crowds to plenty of material from her old band as well.

Lucero, The Vansaders @ Stone Pony
Country punks Lucero know how to have a rowdy, whiskey-fueled good time, but they also know how to pull your heartstrings with sad (and also whiskey-fueled) down-on-their-luck songs. They don't hit NYC on their current tour, but they play two nearby shows, this being the first.

Kiesza @ Santos Party House
The thumping house bass of Kiesza's hit "Hideaway" gets stuck in your head pretty quickly, and for us in New York, watching its video filmed on the streets of Williamsburg is about as fun as the song itself. Now you can see her live in New York tonight.

Electric Six @ Rocks Off Cruise
Electric Six are essentially a one-joke band -- off the charts ego/bravado/innuendo over danceable rock -- who've managed to milk it across 10 albums. Whether you had enough after "Danger! High Voltage!" or still dig the schtick, E6 are always a fun live show. Plus, this is on a boat.

RX Bandits, The Dear Hunter, From Indian Lakes @ Best Buy Theater
While RX Bandits seemed like they'd be done for a while there, they are actually fully back in action and have a new album out this year which is more of their punk/prog/reggae blend.

For all of tonight's shows, and tomorrow's, check out our NYC concert calendar.

For laughs, check out the NYC Comedy calendar too.

What else?

Local Natives @ Governors Ball 2013 (more by Dana [distortion] Yavin)

Browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight's shows. Here are some highlights...

Big Freedia's World Twerking Record @ Herald Square
New Orleans' queen of bounce will try to set the World Record for most people twerking in one place. It goes down at 11:30 AM so if you're in the neighborhood, it's sure to be a spectacle.

Spider Bags, Liquor Store @ Cameo Gallery
Spider Bags will be in NYC for two nights with fellow North Carolinians Superchunk this week, but before that you can catch them rocking out in a more intimate (read: sweatier, rowdier) environment tonight. Liquor Store should warm things up pretty well too.

Torres, Frances Cone, Wet @ Glasslands
Torres has a real knack for songwriting, and the alt-folk of her debut record which came out earlier this year is far more accomplished than many recent debuts of its kind. She and her band bring it live too, so if you're a fan of this kind of stuff, tonight's Glasslands show is not to miss.

Q-Tip, DJ Spinna, Nile Rodgers @ Output
Tonight's edition of Q-Tip's #Offline party is being billed as "A night celebrating the music of Nile Rodgers - with guest of honor Nile Rodgers." We're not sure what that means exactly, either.

Nothing Changes w/ Future Blondes, Skullcaster @ Home Sweet Home
Ring in midweek the dark way with tonight's edition of Nothing Changes featuring the industrial-leaning sounds of Future Blondes and Skullcaster.

Carcass, Immolation @ Saint Vitus Bar
British death metal legends Carcass released Surgical Steel, their first album since reuniting, this year (and first since 1996), and it's no nostalgia act; this is one of the contenders for metal AOTY. So naturally there's a ton of excitement behind this week's NYC shows, both of which are sold out. Tonight they're at Saint Vitus and tomorrow they'll be at the less satanic Gramercy Theatre.

Ex-Wife, Vomit Face, The Can't Tells @ Shea Stadium
New Brunswick post-punks Ex Wife released the solid New Colors LP earlier this year, and tonight they return to Brooklyn for a show at Shea Stadium.

Local Natives, Lucius @ Terminal 5
It's been almost nine months since Local Natives released Hummingbird and their trajectory continues to climb. They played Governor's Ball back in June and tonight's the second of two nights at T5.

Earth, Wind and Fire @ Beacon Theatre
Soul/disco/R&B titans Earth Wind & Fire are playing their second of two nights at Beacon. Who wouldn't want to hear "September" in September?

Chick Corea @ Blue Note
Jazz fusion pianist Chick Corea, known for collaborations with Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, and others, continues his 6-night run at The Blue Note tonight.

Graham Nash @ City Winery
The "Nash" in Crosby, Stills & Nash, one of the songwriters in '60s pop group The Hollies, and a reputable solo artist as well, Graham Nash continues his three-night run at City Winery tonight.

Chris Thile @ Rockwood Music Hall
Best known as The Punch Brothers' mandolin player, Chris Thile indulged his classical side on the just-released Bach: Sonatas and Partitas, Vol. 1.

Electric Six, My Jerusalem @ The Bell House
Detroit's Electric Six have been making tongue-in-cheek, id-overload, disco party rock for over a decade. They'll release their ninth album, Mustang, on October 8.

I'm Turning Into, Couches, Beach Arabs, Termite @ Cake Shop
In addition to quality local bands like I'm Turning Into, tonight's Cake Shop bill features San Francisco's Couches who make grungy slacker pop. You can stream their new 7" below.

Big Terrific @ Cameo Gallery
Max Silvestri hosts the free weekly comedy show in the back of Williamsburg's Lovin' Cup. Tonight's line-up features Joe Zimmerman, Barry Rothbart, and Aparna Nancherla.

For all of tonight's shows, and tomorrow's, check out our full NYC show calendar.

Electric Six on a Rocks Off Boat in NYC - Aug 20, 2009 (.A.A.)
Electric Six

When we left Electric Six last week, they were preparing a new album, KILL, due October 20th on Metropolis Records, and just about to play a boat....

"There's something a little unnerving about being anywhere for hours if you have absolutely no option to leave. So boarding a rock 'n' roll party boat for a three-hour concert cruise might not be for everyone; if you wind up hating the music, getting into a fight with your friends, or feeling violently ill, there's literally no way out until the boat docks.

That element of captivity feels more like a release, though, if you set sail at sunset on the Hudson and the bands are Electric Six, who are out east touring from Michigan, and Les Sans Culottes, the very best faux French retro-rock band in all of Brooklyn. Especially if the boat is named "The Temptress" and has multiple bars and a dance floor (and even if its aroma calls to mind the perspiration of generations past).

Electric Six's "Dick Valentine," the nicest front man who ever moved raving-drunk audience members to perform at-sea body-surfing, said that some people traveled hundreds of miles, some thousands of miles, to be at the show. Screams from the crowd indicated that perhaps it wasn't a joke." [Elle Magazine]
I wouldn't call a 3-hour boat ride a commitment to captivity, but to each his/her own.

Electric Six's post-river cruise plans include a full fall tour, which will feature opening sets by The Gay Blades and Millions of Brazilians. All three will play on Friday, October 16th at NYC's Hiro Ballroom. Tickets go on sale Thursday August 27th at noon. They'll also be in town for a show at Brooklyn's Southpaw on October 18th. Tickets for that are on sale now.

Electric Six bassist Keith Thompson and Zach Curd from The Pop Project recently launched a side-project under the name Desktop. The group's free three-song EP, linked above, shows off a knack for quirky, bedroom-casio-meets-'80s-prom-night electronic disco.

More info on Desktop and all E6 tour dates are below...

Continue reading "Electric Six tour dates ++ a free Desktop EP (E6 side-project)"

Electric Six

The following can be attributed to Dick Valentine [Electric Six singer]:

Hello everybody. We've needed an update for a while, but I am of the mind that you don't force things like that. You bring it when it's time to bring it. Yes, we've been recording and I suppose that's newsworthy. Our sixth album will be finished soon and it will be released in October. It sounds wonderful and I fully intend for this to be the first Electric Six album that sees each and every song being included in our live set when we tour this fall. Because you see, I am getting older and I have very little patience for bullshit.

Electric Six's sixth album, KILL, is set to come out October 20th on Metropolis Records.

The band has a short run of August dates before their not-yet-announced album-supporting tour this fall. The first of those takes place tonight (Aug 19th) at Maxwell's with Les Sans Culottes and Jemina Pearl (Be Your Own Pet). Tickets are still on sale.

The group also plays a Thursday, August 20th Rocks Off Concert Cruise show aboard the Temptress, again with Les Sans Culottes. Tickets are on sale for that too. The band played a similar boat cruise last year. A video of that gig with a brief introductory clip from Tragedy, the all metal Bee Gees tribute band, with all tour dates below...

Continue reading "Electric Six - new album soon, four August shows (dates) "

Electric Six

Electric Six have announced yet another tour. That includes May 4th at Maxwell's in Hoboken (tickets on sale) and May 5th at Bowery Ballroom (tickets on Am Ex presale Wednesday). All dates below...

Rocks Off

The Budos Band, The Queers, Agent Orange, Electric Six and other Summer 2008 Rocks Off NYC boat cruise shows are now on sale.

If you've never been on one, you definitely go at least once if you have the cash. Some people complain about the poor sitelines and high prices (drinks especially), but I think the overall experience makes it worth it, especially if it's one of your favorite bands. The views of the skyline and Statue of Liberty are great. It looks like THIS and THIS and THIS.

NEW YORK (AP) -- While commissioner Roger Goodell was meeting with officials of the ASPCA, about 50 people urged the NFL to "Sack Vick" Friday in a demonstration outside the league's headquarters following the indictment of Michael Vick on dogfighting charges.

"Sack Vick!" chanted the demonstrators, organized by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals as they walked peacefully in front of the Park Avenue building. Many held dogs who had the "Sack Vick" signs on their backs and one woman brought a pit bull, the breed killed in the dogfighting operation the Atlanta quarterback is accused of sponsoring.
