Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) today announced that they would now include streaming sales in the calculation of Gold and Platinum albums. Here's how it breaks down:
After a comprehensive analysis of a variety of factors - including streaming and download consumption patterns and historical impact on the program - and also consultation with a myriad of industry colleagues, the RIAA set the new Album Award formula of 1,500 on-demand audio and/or video song streams = 10 track sales = 1 album sale. Also effective today, RIAA's Digital Single Award ratio will be updated from 100 on-demand streams = 1 download to 150 on-demand streams = 1 download to reflect streaming's enormous growth in the two plus years since that ratio was set.Seventeen albums were certified gold (500,000) or platinum (1 million) with the news, including Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly, Big Sean's Dark Sky Paradise, and Coldplay's Ghost Stories (all of which were all declared platinum). The entire list of albums is below...

The spring 2016 edition of Boston Calling happens May 27-29. For a small festival (with no overlapping sets), Boston Calling continues to bring in some pretty huge names, and this one's got Sia, Disclosure and Robyn headlining, plus Odesza, Sufjan Stevens, Haim, Miike Snow, Janelle Monae, Courtney Barnett, The Front Bottoms, Charles Bradley, Vince Staples, Battles, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Christine and the Queens, festival curator Aaron Dessner (of The National) playing a set with Lisa Hannigan, and more.
This time around they're also adding a small third stage with comedy "and other performances," which will be announced in the coming weeks. Tickets go on sale Friday (1/15) at 10 AM.

The Governors Ball Music Festival, which happens June 3-5 at Randall's Island Park in NYC, has announced it's 2016 lineup which includes headliners Kanye West, the Strokes, and The Killers, plus Beck, Robyn, Death Cab for Cutie, M83, Haim, Chvrches, Father John Misty, Eagles of Death Metal, Purity Ring, Courtney Barnett, Jamie xx, Miike Snow, Bloc Party, Miguel, Big Grams, Action Bronson, Joey Bada$$, De La Soul, Vince Staples, Against Me!, Bat for Lashes, Thundercat, Torres, Bully and more. Full lineup is listed below.
That'll make the second time that both The Strokes and Kanye West headline Governors Ball. Last time Kanye headlined, he debuted about half of his then-still-unreleased Yeezus, and he's got a new album on the way this year too. The Strokes have also said they're in the studio (though a new Strokes album is probably a lot less exciting than a new Kanye album).
Tickets are on sale now.
Mike and the cast of 'Don't Think Twice'
Mike Birbiglia wrote, directed and starred in 2012's acclaimed Sleepwalk with Me. He's got a new movie in the works, titled Don't Think Twice about an improv troupe that includes Keegan-Michael Key (Key & Peele), Gillian Jacobs (Community), Kate Micucci (Garfunkel and Oates), Tami Sagher (Inside Amy Schumer) and Chris Gethard. The official synopsis:
The comedy is about an improv group that loses the lease on its home theater at the same time that one of its cast members gets chosen for the biggest sketch-comedy show on TV. It's about the bitterness and backstabbing that occurs among friends when they realize that maybe not everyone's gonna make it after all.Filming in NYC is currently underway, so stay tuned.
In other news, Mike is part of charity event "The 2nd Annual Talent Show" which happens at NYC's New World Stages / Stage 3 on December 1. Also part of this are Bleachers, Sara Bareilles, Fred Armisen, Lena Dunham, Elle King, Andrew Dost, John Early, Roy Wood Jr, Jacqueline Novak, with host Rachel Antonoff and JD Samson as your DJ for the evening. Tickets are on sale and all proceeds go support New Alternatives' work with LGBTQ Youth. Poster for the show is below.

Living Room's old LES spot (more by Amanda Hatfield) / new space in Williamsburg
The last we spoke about NYC venue Living Room, they had closed their Ludlow St location (next to Pianos and Cake Shop) but were promising to move to a new space. Their plan currently is to soft open during CMJ at their new Williamsburg location of 134 Metropolitan between Berry and Wythe. (Though there's no sign outside currently, or really any sign that it's about to be open.) That's not too far from Glasslands (or the soon-to-close Death by Audio) and if Max Fish had actually opened in Williamsburg (to have been at 132 Metropolitan), they would've been neighbors again.
So far, their schedule for CMJ includes shows with Mosco Rosco, Have Mercy, Fort Lean, Frances Cone and more. You can check out their full schedule as it stands at the moment, below...
