photo: Paul McCartney in Austin, 2013 (more by Tim Griffin)
You may remember that when Firefly Music Fest announced its 2015 lineup, the first headliner was blurred out on the poster. Well, as rumored, it's Paul McCartney, the fest revealed today. Macca will join Morrissey, Modest Mouse, Spoon, Run The Jewels, How To Dress Well, Snoop Dogg, Tycho, Sturgill Simpson, Sylvan Esso, Zola Jesus, Rustie, Le1f and many more at the fest which happens June 18-21 at the Woodlands in Dover, DE. Updated lineup below.
General admission passes to Firefly go on sale Monday (3/2) at noon, EST.
McCartney was just in NYC for a surprise Valentine's Day show and an appearance on the SNL 40th Anniversary special. He since spent some time skiing in Vermont, much to the delight of the J.J. Hapgood General Store & Eatery in Peru.
Delaware's annual Firefly Music Festival comes back June 18-21 and the lineup's now been released. Kings of Leon, The Killers and

Vampire Weekend / Interpol / James Blake / Pikachu
"New York cares." That's what the audience sang with Interpol's Paul Banks during the city indie anthem "NYC" as Governors Ball 2014 neared its close on Sunday. Throughout the weekend some of the city's finest bands had made a return to festival stages, secured headliner statuses and played the most memorable sets of the fest for home crowds. For Interpol, it has just announced a new album, played two excellent new tracks and Sunday's show at Governors Ball was the band's "First home show for us in a long time." A set heavy on the classics, Interpol played through "Obstacle 1," "Slow Hands," "Narc," "Evil" and "Stella Was a Driver and She Was Always Down." [Reverb]The 2014 Governors Ball music festival wrapped up yesterday (6/8) after two other days of music on NYC's Randall's Island. The third and final day had sets from Vampire Weekend, Interpol (who along with The Strokes and Jack White's set featuring White Stripes songs, brought us back over a decade), James Blake, The Kills, J. Cole, The Head and the Heart, Tyler the Creator, Earl Sweatshirt and more. Luckily, with today's rain and Thursday's, the weather held out for GovBall all weekend (unlike last year). Pictures of day 3 are in this post.

Pharrell / Future Islands / Ty Segall / mean girls
Watching Ty Segall at the Outdoor Theatre to kick off my Saturday drove home a 2014 Coachella reality: the relative lack of noisy, guitar-driven bands. While the bill is loaded with synthy, electronic-leaning indie types, traditional rock acts are few and far between this year. As if to illustrate the point, late in his gloriously loud and raucous set, Segall covered "Mötörhead" by Mötörhead, one of a handful of truly heavy bands at the fest.Coachella 2014 recently wrapped up its first of two weekends. You already saw pictures of day 1, and we've got a set of day 2 pics in this post, including shots of Pet Shop Boys, Pharrell, Queens of the Stone Age, Pixies, Fatboy Slim, Lorde, Future Islands, Warpaint, Julian Casablancas, Ty Segall, Graveyard, Foxygen, Laura Mvula and more.
...I arrived 20 minutes early Saturday night [for the Pixies], just in case, but while the Mojave eventually filled and then some, things never got ugly. As for the set itself, I doubt I'll ever adjust to seeing Black Francis, Joey Santiago and David Lovering on a stage without Kim Deal, but the new-look Pixies produced a quality set nonetheless, bashing out extra-ferocious versions of "Gouge Away," "Nimrod's Son," "Crackity Jones" and more. [Las Vegas Weekly]
Of course there's too much to catch everything, but many other great artists played the second day too, including Solange whose sister Beyonce came on stage to dance with her (video below), Nas whose frenemy Jay Z joined him for "Dead Presidents II" and "Where I'm From" and Diddy (I mean Puff Daddy) joined him for "Hate Me Now" (full set video below), indie legends The Dismemberment Plan, post-rock vets Mogwai, plus sets from MGMT, Washed Out, Bombay Bicycle Club, Holy Ghost and many more.
One of the big talks of the day was Pharrell (and his hat), who brought out loads of guests who reminded the crowd that Pharrell wasn't a nobody before "Happy," "Get Lucky" and "Blurred Lines" (all three of which he played). He produced or co-produced huge hits for Snoop Dogg ("Drop It Like It's Hot"), Gwen Stefani ("Hollaback Girl"), Busta Rhymes ("Pass the Courvoisier") and Nelly ("Hot in Herre"), all of who joined him for said songs. A few videos from his set below.

Empire of the Sun @ Pier 26, 9/5/2013
The duo outfit themselves in pastel muumuus, sparkling headdresses and smeary face-paints, making them look like either intergalactic figure skaters or Aztec cousins to Siegfried and Roy. Not since A Flock of Seagulls has a pop group presented a look this flat-out ridiculous.Australian galaxy invaders / over-the-top pop band Empire of the Sun touched down in NYC on Thursday (9/6) at outdoor venue Pier 26 as part of their summer tour. Opening the show was fellow Aussies (and writers of catchy tunes in their own right), Alpine. Pictures from that show are in this post.
The good news? They meant it that way.
"We want our artists to look ridiculous," says the duo's Nick Littlemore. "We like flamboyance. We looked around at all these indie artists wearing boring clothes and staring at their shoes and we thought, 'Where are our Eltons? Where are our Bowies?'" - [NY Daily News]
Right after Empire of the Sun were this weekend's two Passion Pit shows at Pier 26 which were the last of the season...and the venue, it looks like, due to noise complaints from neighbors. Too bad. More pics from Empire of the Sun and Alpine below...

A$AP Rocky / Haim
We just posted a set of pictures from day 1 (8/31) of Philly's two-day Jay Z-curated Made In America festival, which went down on Benjamin Franklin Parkway over the weekend. Here's a second set of pictures from that day, including shots of Beyonce, Phoenix, Empire of the Sun, Deadmau5, 2 Chainz, A$AP Rocky, and Haim.

Phoenix / Beyonce / Deadmau5 fan
"We are Phoenix, from Paris, France" lead singer Thomas Mars shouted. "Are you with us or what?"The Jay Z-curated Made In America festival went down on Philly's Benjamin Franklin Parkway this past weekend (Saturday, 8/31 and Sunday, 9/1). The first day included sets from Beyonce, Phoenix, Empire of the Sun, Public Enemy, 2 Chainz, A$AP Rocky (who showed up late and played an abbreviated set), Haim, Rudimental, and more. Pictures of those artists (and a few) others are in this post. The festival also had a few last-minute punky additions on the Skate Park Stage including Cloud Nothings, Balance & Composure, and Restorations, who we unfortunately missed.
This gave way to the dance-pop musings of "Trying To Be Cool". The main-stage fans, many of whom had waited all day through the draining and relentless heat for Beyonce, appeared to be simultaneously exhausted and excited.
Mars then laid down on the stage, foreshadowing the introduction of their riveting instrumental track "Love Like A Sunset Part 1", a song crushingly augmented by a guitar riff mixed much louder than it was on record.
Then it was time for "1901". Mars stood on the front-row barriers propped up by security as cameras and phones popped out of every orifice of the embracing audience. He then took to the sea of fans, singing as he swam across their heads until he popped up at the soundboard rafters and made his way back. [Crave Online]
Jay Z also used the festival to announce his upcoming Magna Carta World Tour. Dates haven't been announced yet but will be soon, so stay tuned.
Stay tuned for day 2 pictures. A second set of day 1 pics is HERE and more of day 1 below...
Cloud Nothings at BV-SXSW 2013 (more by Sarah Frankie Linder)
As discussed, the Jay Z-curated Budweiser Made In America Festival is returning this weekend to Philly's Benjamin Franklin Parkway (8/31-9/1), and the mostly pop/rap/R&B festival just got a little more, um... punk. Aside from the fact that it already included The Gaslight Anthem (who are pretty much a festival regular by now anyway), the lineup now includes Cloud Nothings, Restorations, Balance & Composure, The Front Bottoms, Diarrhea Planet, PUJOL, and more. And you thought it was weird when Jay Z saw Grizzly Bear.
UPDATE: And one more: Wavves was added to the TBA slot on Sunday.
Other non-punk additions that have happened since we last spoke include Rudimental and The Underachievers. The full schedule was also recently announced, and you can check that out below.
Many of the artists playing Made In America also have NYC or NJ shows this weekend (or soon after), including The Front Bottoms, Diarrhea Planet, Rudimental, The Underachievers, Kendrick, Ab Soul & Jay Rock, AlunaGeorge, Haim, and 2 Chainz.

Empire of the Sun @ Bonnaroo 2013 (more by Dana [distortion] Distortion)
Is it an '80s fantasy movie? Ice Capades? No it's campy megapop band Empire of the Sun, whose second album, Ice on the Dune, manages an interesting feat: eliciting a nostalgic vibe without being nostalgic to anything in particular. (Also, it's hard to deny they know their way around a hook.) The band have been on the festival circuit all summer, having played Bonnaroo and other stops around the country. Before they head back to the third moon of Qaarsdar (or Australia), they've added a show happening in NYC at Hudson River Park's Pier 26 on September 5. Tickets to that show go on sale Friday (7/26) at noon.
Empire of the Sun tour dates are listed below.

Bjork / Empire of the Sun @ Bonnaroo, 6/15/2013
There's no shortage of kooky costumed folk at Bonnaroo, but it's usually the antendees who are eccentrically attired. On Saturday (6/15), though, the main stage gave them a run for their money. Ever fashion forward, Bjork wore a headdress that either made her look like a dandelion or an extra from Hellraiser. (She wore it at the Hollywood Bowl too.) Australia's Empire of the Sun was a close runner up with their over-the-top headlining set that could've been from Flash Gordon. Mumford & Sons had to cancel (replaced by shoe-phobic folkie Jack Johnson), but Saturday also main stage sets from Billy Idol, R. Kelly, Nas, Cat Power, Matt & Kim, Portugal. The Man, The Lumineers and more. Pictures from those sets are in this post.
Elsewhere at Bonnaroo on Saturday, Mac DeMarco, JEFF the Brotherhood, Lord Huron and others on the smaller stages, a live episode of Scott Aukerman's Comedy Bang Bang, and in the Cinema Tent, Police Academy's sound effects wiz Michael Winslow (who played with Animal Collective the night before) did a one man show.

Empire of the Sun have released the video for their new single, "Alive," from their forthcoming album Ice on the Dune. Like most of their videos it's slightly over the top. You can watch it below.
Kelis, who has always been one of the more adventurous artists in popular R&B, is set to release her next album, FOOD, this September. The album was produced by TV on the Radio's Dave Sitek and it will come out on his Federal Prism label. The first single, "Jerk Ribs" (which surfaced a few days ago, but was mislabeled as "Call on Me") sees Kelis soaring over a clattering beat and some anthemic horns, and it's one of her strongest singles in years. You can stream/download it below. - Andrew

Hot Chip at Prospect Park in 2012 (more by Toby Tenenbaum)
Astralwerks Records was founded in NYC in 1993 as a primarily electronic arm of Caronline Records. When they hit it big in the late '90s with Chemical Brothers, Air and Fatboy Slim band, Astralwerks became one of the biggest indie labels in the country. They've since been picked up by Universal Music Group and have expanded into other genres but they do maintain a focus on the electronic. To celebrate their 20th anniversary this year, Astralwerks will release a limited edition box set, Astralwerks: Music in 20/20, on Record Store Day (4/20). The compilation features previously unreleased or rare tracks from Hot Chip, Air, Diamond Rings, Kraftwerk, Kings of Convenience, Doves and others plus previously released tracks by The Chemical Brothers, The Beta Band, Fatboy Slim, Cassius, Basement Jaxx, Royksopp, a Four Tet remix of Sia and more. The Treasure Island Music Festival went down over two days on a small island in the San Francisco Bay, juggling two stages and acts that ranged from Death From Above 1979 to Cut Copy to St Vincent. The bands and sets were staggered so that changeovers allowed for the audience to see all of each band which, on day 1, included appearances from Death From Above 1979, Geographer, Aloe Blacc, The Naked & The Famous, Shabazz Palaces, YACHT (who play NYC in December), Battles, Dizzee Rascal, Chromeo, Buraka Som Sistema, Flying Lotus, Cut Copy, and Empire of The Sun...
"Sometimes a performance impresses you simply because of its natural and flawless flow. This was Chromeo on Saturday [10/15 at Treasure Island Music Festival]. The Montreal duo known for creating modern 80s-inspired electro-synth pop got one of the largest crowds of the day moving immediately as they opened with "Fancy Footwork." The hits kept coming with classics like "Don't Turn the Lights Off," "Bonafied Lovin," "Tenderoni" and set closer "Night by Night." Chromeo over the years has cemented themselves as one of the more fun and original acts in electronic music, Saturday was no disappointment whatsoever."Chromeo, who since played Moogfest, play their first of two shows at Terminal 5 tonight (11/4).

Arcade Fire / The Walkmen
The 10th annual Austin City Limits festival came to a close on Sunday with a headlining set by Arcade Fire (who also taped an edition of Austin City Limits the TV show one day earlier). It was a rough year for some attendees. I'm talking about smokers. Austin Statesman posted the following before the weekend:
We welcome all the people and music artists attending this year's Austin City Limits Music Festival. It's a special year for the music festival, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary. The talent this year is incredible, with headliners Kanye West, Stevie Wonder and Arcade Fire, as well as local favorites such as Asleep at the Wheel.I don't know how many people obeyed that, but it's safe to say that ACL was fire free. In fact, much to the delight of many, it actually rained a bit on Friday and Saturday. Pictures from Sunday continue, with Arcade Fire's setlist, below...
Before we get this party started, we must advise attendees that the Austin Parks Department has banned smoking at all Austin parks, greenbelts, trails and golf courses. That includes Zilker Park, site of the festival.
We realize that a smoking ban might be an inconvenience for some. But it is necessary to keep everyone safe. So please have fun at the events, which run today through Sunday, but leave the cigarettes, cigars, pipes -- or whatever else one might be smoking -- behind. (The ban also prohibits wood or charcoal grilling in Zilker and other parks.)
Smoking was allowed at previous ACL festivals, but this year is different. This year, Central Texas is dealing with wildfires that have killed two people, destroyed about 1,500 homes and burned tens of thousands of acres in Bastrop County, Steiner Ranch, Pflugerville and other Central Texas communities. In Austin, city firefighters responded to 469 brush fires from January through July. Cigarettes caused about a fourth of those fires, officials said. [Austin Statesman]

They start at $75 each and go up in price as the date gets closer or if you want VIP options.
The Governors Ball promises to be a massive mid-summer dance party of epic proportions. Performances will take place on two stages without overlapping sets, and feature stunning views. The artists appearing at the inaugural Governors Ball are diverse in scope and sound, spanning indie rock, dance, electronica, and hip hop, but the common theme and guiding force behind the festival is music that gets people of all walks of life moving, dancing and having a good time." - PR
The closest thing we've seen to this on Governors Island is HARD Fest that took place with M.I.A. in July. This lineup, with more than one artist on the bill who can headline multiple nights at Terminal 5, is bigger though.
