Raised in Tulsa after being born in Oklahoma City in 1938, Cale played local clubs with Leon Russell before the two musicians, along with Carl Radle, moved to Los Angeles in 1964. One year later, Cale began a solo career and recorded his first version of "After Midnight."

After Cale signed to Shelter Records in 1969, Clapton recorded "After Midnight" and made it a smash hit. Cale's debut album, "Naturally," came in 1971, and featured the song "Call Me the Breeze," later covered and popularized by Lynyrd Skynyrd. - [Billboard]

J.J. Cale, who also wrote Clapton's hit "Cocaine," died of a heart attack on Friday night (7/26). He was 74.

The 12/12/12 Hurricane Sandy benefit concert at Madison Square Garden went down last night and aired on multiple TV channels, websites, and in theaters worldwide. The concert featured performances by Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Roger Waters (joined by Eddie Vedder), Bon Jovi, Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Alicia Keys, Kanye West, Chris Martin (joined by Michael Stipe), and Paul McCartney (joined by members of Nirvana). And in between there were speeches/appearances by Billy Crystal, John Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, P. Diddy, Chris Rock, and many more, spliced with footage of the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy. (The less said about Adam Sandler's "funny" version of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" with Paul Shaffer the better.) As was to be expected, the sets were short (though some longer than others) but it still ran late, ending after 1 AM. If you missed any of it, videos of some of the highlights are in this post.

Bruce Springsteen opened the show, getting everyone into the spirit of the night right away. Of all the sets, his choice of songs felt the most catered to the event ("Land of Hope and Dreams," "Wrecking Ball, "My City of Ruins," and of course also "Born to Run") and halfway in he prefaced "My City of Ruins" with a touching, personal speech about the damage done to the NY/NJ area, similar to the one he gave in Rochester in October.

Other highlights from throughout the show: Roger Waters ended his set by bringing out Eddie Vedder to sing lead on "Comfortably Numb." The Rolling Stones only got to play two songs ("You Got Me Rocking" and "Jumpin' Jack Flash") but still looked like they were having a great time. The Who, meanwhile, played seven songs. Then Kanye delivered a set which sent much of the twitterverse into an angry fit, though you have to wonder if this would have happened at a non-classic rock show (probably not). And of course, it was a pretty great surprise when Chris Martin brought out R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe to do "Losing My Religion."

But the most anticipated part of the night was that Nirvana reunion with Paul McCartney on vocals that everyone was talking about. Paul ended up bringing Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Pat Smear out during his set to perform a new song they wrote, titled "Cut Me Some Slack," and then they left the stage and Paul returned to his own material. It would've been interesting to see those guys jam with Paul during "Helter Skelter" (which he opened with) or something, but at least Paul didn't sing "Smells Like Teen Spirit."

Videos and setlist from last night are below...

Mick Jagger w/ Mary J. Blige in London last month
Jagger and Blige

When The Rolling Stones played their two London shows in November, they were joined by a number of guests including Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Mick Taylor, Bill Wyman, Florence Welch, and Mary J. Blige. And now they've revealed that Blige will also join them at their Brooklyn show at Barclays Center this Saturday (12/8), along with upcoming blues riffer Gary Clark Jr., who takes after a similar lineage (Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, etc) as the Stones and probably owes a bit of his sound to them as well. Tickets for that show are still available.

The Stones also play two nights at The Prudential Center (12/13 and 12/15), the latter of which will stream live. Tickets for both of those shows are still available too.

A video of Mary J Blige doing "Gimme Shelter" with the Stones in London is HERE and more videos and the setlists from those shows are below.

Bruce Springsteen & Tom Morello @ MSG (BMoreSweet)
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

U2 closed the second night of the MSG Rock & Roll Hall of Fame shows on October 30th. At the first (10/29), it was Bruce Springsteen & Billy Joel (before one big group sing on Jackie Wilson's "Higher and Higher")...

After "Badlands" much of the drained audience began leaving and then rushed back to their seats when Billy Joel sat down at the piano and launched into "You May Be Right," "Only The Good Die Young" and "New York State Of Mind." (The pair were uniting the kindred spirits of New Jersey and Long Island, Springsteen explained.) "Higher and Higher" wrapped up the night. The official set list had the show ending at 11:36:55 (yes, they thought they had it down to the exact second), but the final notes rang out at 1:31 a.m. Six straight hours of music, and that was just the first of two nights. [Rolling Stone]
Bruce was actually there both nights (one of many possibly "filling in" for Eric Clapton, who canceled last minute on the second). Those in attendence on the 30th got to see U2, Bruce Springsteen and Patti Smith sing together on "Because the Night." (And U2 + Mick Jagger (another unannounced guest) + Fergie + Will.i.am sing "Gimme Shelter"...). Ray Davies, Lou Reed, and Ozzy Osbourne all performed with Metallica. Many played with Stevie Wonder. Full setlists below.

HBO will be airing four hours of highlights on Thanksgiving weekend.
(November 29th at 8PM ET).

Bruce's current tour wraps up November 22nd in Buffalo. He was at Giants Stadium earlier this fall, playing the last concerts ever there. U2 also played the venue for two nights in September, and will be back in Jersey in 2010 as part of their just-announced tour.

Set lists for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame shows are below...

Bruce Springsteen @ Giants Stadium (more by Tim Griffin)
Bruce Sprinsteen

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame concerts at Madison Square Garden scheduled for October 29th and 30th will go on without Eric Clapton. Bruce Springsteen's participation is in question due to a death in the family that caused him to cancel last night's show in Kansas City.

Lenny Sullivan, Bruce's cousin and the assistant road manager of the E Street Band for the last ten years, passed away today at the age of 36. A warm and sensitive person, he was beloved by Bruce, the Band, the crew, and the entire Thrill Hill family.

[and] Due to [the] death in Bruce's immediate family, [Monday night's] show at Sprint Center has been unavoidably cancelled. All tickets will be refunded at the point of purchase. Bruce and The Band deeply appreciate the understanding of our Kansas City audience and look forward to returning at the earliest opportunity. [BruceSpringsteen.net]

R.I.P. Lenny.

Eric Clapton won't be at MSG because he's having gallstones removed.

Van Morrison recently canceled his performance at the show as well (he was replaced by Buddy Guy). Some tickets are still available (I was able to pull up a $2600 seat for the second night)...or you can try eBay where they'll run you in the same ballpark as a World Series ticket.

Still on the bill for night one are Sting, Little Richard, Jackson Browne, James Taylor, Smokey Robinson and Bonnie Raitt, Stevie Wonder, Simon and Garfunkel and Crosby and Stills and Nash; and for night two Jeff Beck, Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Guy, U2, Aretha Franklin and Metallica.
