Ex Cops @ South Street Seaport, 7/13/2012 (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Ex Cops

We mentioned before that there was a Sandy relief benefit happening at Cameo on Tuesday (11/13) being presented by Finger on the Pulse / Snacky Tunes folks (Greg and Darin Bresnitz). The benefit also doubles as the release party for Snacky Tunes Vol. 3, the the latest free, downloadable collection of live performances from their internet radio show of the same name that broadcasts on the Heritage Radio network (whose booth is in Roberta's back yard). The new volume includes songs from Wallpaper, Zambri, Spinto Band, Sinkane and Brad Oberhofer who performs a solo acoustic version of "Landline" which you can download at the top of this post.

The line-up for the Cameo release party/benefit has changed since we originally posted about it. Emil & Friends have dropped off the bill, replaced by Ex-Cops. Moon Hooch and Erika Spring with both be performing as well, as mentioned previously, and Computer Magic will be on DJ duty throughout the night. A $5 donation at the door gets you in (feel free to donate more) and all proceeds (as well as 10% of the bar, so drink up) go to the Red Hook Initiative. Updated flyer is below.

Meanwhile, Ex Cops have announced details of their debut album, True Hallucinations, which comes out January 22 via Other Music Recording Co. Produced by John Siket (Sonic Youth, Blonde Redhead), the record shows off Brian Harding's strong songwriting chops (and the lovely vocals of Amalie Bruun) over the course of 11 jangly, just-hazy-enough songs that all get straight to the hooks. You can stream "James" from the album below and check out True Hallucination's cover art and tracklist.

The Babies @ Glasslands, 6/6/12 (more by Tamara Porras)
Sandy Benefit

There have been a lot of benefit concerts here in NYC to aid Hurricane Sandy victims and there are likely to be even more to come. There certainly are a lot of people who still need our help. Here are a few we just learned about.

The Babies record release show at Knitting Factory on Tuesday (11/13) we already alerted you to has become a Hurricane Sandy benefit of sorts. You can get $2 off the door with a donation for Hurricane Sandy Relief. Here's what's needed:

-Heavy duty cleaning supplies: bleach, industrial trash bags, contractor bags, brooms, mops, buckets, simple green, work gloves, goggles
-Blankets,
-Warm clothing, like heavy coats, gloves, hats, scarves.
-Diapers, baby food, bottles, formula.
-Food in general but specifically food that is appropriate for children (snack foods, cereal, rice, pb&j, bread)-
-Some places need flashlights & batteries, especially C or D.
You can stream The Babies' new album, Our House on the Hill (out 11/13), in full over at SPIN and is really good, well worth a listen. The Babies have become a formidable live force too and, if truth be told, I like them more than either Vivian Girls or Woods (with whom they share members and I like just fine). We're also giving a pair of tickets away to this show (which also features Alex Bleeker and the Freaks and the Sundelles) and details are at the bottom of this post (And if you win, bring extra stuff!).

Also on Tuesday in Williamsburg, the Finger on the Pulse / Snacky Tunes guys are throwing a Sandy relief benefit at Cameo featuring Moon Hooch, Emil & Friends and Erika Spring with DJ sets from Computer Magic. $5 at the door with 100% of the door and 10% of the bar going to the Red Hook Initiative. Flyer for the show is below.

Backing up a bit, on Sunday afternoon (11/11) at Matchless there's a benefit show with BV faves Heliotropes, DC bandShark Week, plus Zula, and Fantasmes. The party goes from 3 - 7 PM and is a $10 donation at the door. 100% door + 10% bar will be donated to New York Cares.

Shark Week are also playing another Sandy relief benefit the night before (11/10) at XPO 929 with Love Darling, and Clinical Trials. $8 at the door, more info here.

Flyers and contest details are below.

Cymbals Eat Guitars at MHOW in July (more by Chris La Putt)
Cymbals Eat Guitars

Staten Island rockers Cymbals Eat Guitars will be taking the ferry over to Manhattan next week to be the musical guests on Wrestling Team's live taping of their podcast, Beginnings, which happens on October 9 at UCBEast. The tapings happen on the second Tuesday of every month (AC Newman played the last one). Tuesday's show will also feature comedian Sara Schaefer. $5 tickets for the show are on sale now.

Sara Schaefer, who is currently living in NYC as well, will also do a show one day earlier (10/8) at Ace Hotel. This show begins at 9 PM, and happens the same night that Erika Spring (of Au Revoir Simone) does her DJ residency in the Ace Hotel Lobby.

Earlier this month (just around the time they opened for Bob Mould actually), Cymbals Eat Guitars put out the song, "Hawk Highway," for the video series Masters From Their Day. You can download that song above or stream it below. You can also read the song's lyrics HERE.

Savoir Adore
Savoir Adore

CMJ just released the third round of artists playing this year's fest which happens in three weeks (October 16 - 20). Names include Dent May (who we already knew about) Penguin Prison, Toronto's Born Ruffians, Erika Spring, Berlin trio Fenster (who were here in March) Chad Valley, Rush Midnight and more. Full list is at the bottom of this post.

Also on the just-added list are Brooklyn's Savoir Adore who will release their new album, Our Nature, the week of CMJ (10/16 specifically). The band recorded it at the same upstate studio as their 2010 debut, In the Wooded Forest, and are self-releasing this one. If the last album was wide-screen pop, the band have gone CinemaScope with Our Nature. It's dancier, more anthemic and brimming with hooks and just plain bigger sounding. Last year's "Dreamers" single (which opens the new album) is a good indicator of what to expect, and you can watch the video for that below along with a stream of album track "Regalia."

Before CMJ, Savoir Adore will play Knitting Factory on October 9 for an Our Nature record release party with Ghost Beach and Royal Canoe. Tickets for that show are on sale now. Those three bands are touring together immediately after and judging by their schedule, their only open day to play CMJ will be 10/16.

The list of all Savoir Adore dates, the list of third round CMJ artists, that song stream and video are below...

DOWNLOAD: Erika Spring - Hidden (MP3)
DOWNLOAD: Erika Spring - Hidden [Jensen Sportag remix] (MP3)

Erika Spring (of Au Revoir Simone) will release her debut EP on the Cascine label next week (7/10) and is playing a record release show in NYC on July 12 at the Ivana Helsinki Space (251 Elizabeth St). It's a free show, 8 - 10PM.

Produced by Violens' Jorge Elbrecht (who also plays drums in her live band), the songs on Erika's EP are much more lush, rhythmic and slinky than the minimalist vibe of her band Au Revoir Simone though definitely similar melodically with Erica's distinctive, delicate vocals. You can download "Hidden" at the top of the post as well as the funky '80s vocodered Jensen Sportag remix of the song.

The only other Erika Spring dates we're currently aware of are a few west coast shows with Alt-J (who also have upcoming NYC shows). All of her dates are listed below, along with the EP cover art and streams of both versions of "Hidden."

Hundred in the Hands

The Hundred in the Hands played their last US show at Glasslands on Tuesday (5/15) before their international tour which kicks off in Moscow tonight (5/18). The show was with openers Vorhees and Erika Spring (of Au Revoir Simone). More pIctures from that show are in this post.

The Hundred in the Hands at Bowery Ballroom in 2011 (more by Chris La Putt)
The Hundred in the Hands

Brooklyn duo The Hundred in the Hands, are set to release their new album, Red Night, on June 12 via Warp. They're also releasing a 12" single for album track, "Keep It Low," which you can stream below. That 12" comes with remixes by Andy Stott, Optimo, and Patten. On Andy Stott's remix, he takes the already dark song and strips it down to focus more on the low end, which darkens the tone even more. The video for that remix is below.

The Hundred in the Hands are kicking off an international tour in Moscow on Friday (5/18), but before they head out they'll play a local show TONIGHT (5/15) at Glasslands with Erika Spring (of Au Revoir Simone), Vorhees, and Jacques Renault. Tickets are available and we're also giving away a pair. Details on how to win are below.

On their tour, they'll return to NYC for a show at Mercury Lounge on June 20. Tickets for this show are not on sale yet but check ticketmaster for updates.

All dates, video, stream, and contest details below...

Toys & Tiny Instruments
Toys

It's a fairly quiet post-ATP weekend, which is fine. And the big stuff (Jens Lekman, James Blake) is sold out. CMJ is coming up in less than two weeks, and I plan on taking it (fairly) easy until then. (More than anything else, I'm stoked for the Breaking Bad finale on Sunday!) But there is, as always, stuff going on that's worth your time and coin. So this week I'm just going to do an extended version of the day-by-day picks.

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 6

Anika at Glasslands.

Dive, the new band from Beach Fossils dude Cole Smith, is easily the hardest working group in Brooklyn right now. You can see them tonight at Death by Audio on a pretty stacked bill of locals. I've caught Dive a couple nights now and am really impressed with their energy -- dark and motorik (not totally unlike Captured Tracks labelmates Soft Moon) -- and Smith's ability to spin around and play in clothes six sizes too big for him.

Dive also plays tomorrow (10/7) at 285 Kent with Night Manager and ex-Sweetbulbs band Heaven's Gate (who have a new MP3 to download at the top of this post) and Friends.

The rest of the show is good too. Caged Animals is Vin of Soft Black's new band. There are MP3s above and you can read more about them here. The show is also a record release for Spanish Prisoners' new album, Gold Fools, which you can stream in its entirety at the bottom of this post.  It's been a while since I checked in with them... it's a really nice record, especialy the single "Rich Blood" which you can download for free from their Bandcamp. Also playing are Quiet Lights who might fill the void for lovely loud guitar pop left by Dirty on Purpose.

Over at Cake Shop are the Toys and Tiny Instruments Band who do not play live very often. It's exactly as it sounds, seven or eight folks playing songs on kazoos, melodicas, penny whistles, plastic guitars and other toys and tiny instruments. (Not unlike Pianosarus for those whose memories go back to '80s obscurities.) They are way better than you think they're going to be.

And at Public Assembly it's electronic psych rock pioneers Silver Apples who play with MNDR, Lemonade, Ital and Todd Pendu on DJ duty. Another worthy show.

Laetitia Sadier

Laetitia Sadier of Stereolab will play a rare and small show at Rock Shop on June 15th, two days after she plays the larger Le Poisson Rouge on June 13th with with Erika Spring (of Au Revoir Simone) and Arturo en el Barco. Tickets for Rock Shop go on sale TODAY (5/11) at 5PM and will also available via the Rock Shop box office at that time. Tickets for the "first-come, first-served partially seated event" at LPR are still available too.

The shows are in support of Sadier's first solo LP, The Trip, which dropped last year via Drag City. The LP features guest shouts from Richard Swift, April March, and and Julien Gasc. Listen to a couple songs from the LP, with all tour dates (aka Germany and NYC), below...
