Helen Grouper

Grouper's Liz Harris also has a band called Helen with Eternal Tapestry's Jed Bideman, and Scott Simmons. They're releasing their debut album, The Original Faces, on September 4 via Kranky, and first single "Motorcycle" is out now. It's more in the dream pop/shoegaze realm than Grouper's own material, as you can hear for yourself below.

The album also features "Felt This Way" and "Dying All the Time" from their 2013 single. Live videos of those, and the album tracklist, also below...

2015 Levitation Fest Day 3

"Who wants to hear the most muthafuckin' psychedelic song of all time?" That was Mac DeMarco bassist Piece McGarry asking the crowd during the final day of Levitation Fest (5/10). The three-day event used to be known as Austin Psych Fest, so of course the crowd wanted to hear it. They immediately launched into a cover of Coldplay's "Yellow." Between Mac and the main stages' closer, The Flaming Lips, Levitation 2015 ended on a light note. And a thankfully dry one, as reports earlier in the week called for Sunday to have heavy thunderstorms and maybe even tornadoes. Instead, it just felt like it was going rain the whole time (aka hot and muggy).

Most people on Sunday were excited about the 13th Floor Elevators reunion but lots of great sets happened, including A Place to Bury Strangers, Fat White Family, Sean Lennon's The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger, Nothing, ZZZs, Chelsea Wolfe (subbing for Melody's Echo Chamber), and a sweaty closing-fest set from Ty Segall's proto-metal trio Fuzz.

Pictures from Levitation day 1 are HERE and day 2 are HERE. More pics from Levitation day 3 below...

Eternal Tapestry

Sometimes it seems like all it takes is a little reverb on your vocals to get called "psychedelic," but Eternal Tapestry make psychedelic music in its truest form. Their newest album Wild Strawberries came out on Thrill Jockey last week, and it's the kind of meditative, tripped-out music that sounds made to be heard with lava lamps and incense. It's a little like The Grateful Dead, if you're talking about the studio experiments on Aoxomoxoa or "Space." And while these songs feel too carefully constructed to be considered jams, the band certainly take their time with them -- three tracks pass the 15-minute mark.

They recently made a hallucinatory video for opening track "Mountain Primrose" with director Brenna Murphy, and we've got the premiere of that in this post. Check it out, with their list of dates (including Austin Psych Fest's Levitation), below...

Austin Psych Fest 2014 (more by Tim Griffin)

The annual Austin Psych Fest, which they've renamed "Austin Psych Fest presents Levitation" (more on that below), happens this year from May 8-10 at the Carson Creek Ranch. The initial lineup was just revealed and it's looking pretty crazy. There's The Flaming Lips, Tame Impala, The Jesus and Mary Chain (performing Psychocandy), Spiritualized, Primal Scream, The Black Angels, Thee Oh Sees, Mac DeMarco, Melody's Echo Chamber, Lightning Bolt, The Sword, Earth, A Place to Bury Strangers, Fuzz, The Soft Moon, Metz, White Fence, Fat White Family, Nothing and still plenty more. Weekend passes are on sale now and check out the full initial lineup below.

As for the name change of the fest to Levitation:

Over the years, countless other "psych fest" events have popped up around the globe - music communities all over the world are gathering together and celebrating music and art together. This is an amazing thing and we are proud to be a part of it.

In 2015 we are redefining what we're doing with a renewed focus on the music we love, and to mark that change the festival is taking on a new name: LEVITATION. The title comes from one of our favorite tracks from Austin legends The 13th Floor Elevators, who have provided us with endless inspiration. Their music and message transcended genre - they were true innovators.

The APF folks have been doing a sister festival in France called "Levitation" since 2013.

Lineup, poster and announcement video for Austin Psych Fest presents Levitation, below...

Yesterday, we mentioned that Thrill Jockey Records will be celebrating their 20th anniversary this year, and in honor of it are hosting a show at Webster Hall on September 15 with Tortoise, Future Islands, Matmos, Liturgy. and D. Charles Speer. That show is actually just one in a series of 20th anniversary shows the label are putting on around the country, including a much smaller one in NYC at Death by Audio on September 14 with White Hills, Guardian Alien, Man Forever (who also plays DbA on Friday, 7/20), Dan Friel, and Rhyton. Tickets for the Death by Audio show and the Webster Hall show are on sale now.

In addition to the shows, the label will also celebrate their anniversary with newly commissioned silk screened posters, like this one and this one, and 2-minute video shorts, like the one by Ashby Lee Collinson that you can watch below. They've also asked a number of comedians, including Fred Armisen, to write two jokes (one clean and one dirty) and Thrill Jockey will be recording reactions to the jokes and pressing them on limited edition vinyl.

In related news, experimental duo Matmos (aka M.C. Schmidt and Drew Daniel), who are playing some of the anniversary shows including the Webster Hall one, have just recently signed to Thrill Jockey, and they'll put out their first release for the label, the Ganzfeld EP, on October 15.

All currently known Thrill Jockey 20th anniversary shows (more TBA) are listed below with lineups...
