Kurt Ballou w/ Converge at MHOW in 2012 (more by Jonathan McPhail)
Converge already have a busy 2015 ahead of them, with a big tour with At the Gates and Vallenfyre -- that hits NYC on 12/12 at Webster Hall (tickets) -- lined up, but even when Converge aren't touring or working on an album, their members seem constantly busy. We recently talked about what bassist Nate Newton is up to, frontman Jacob Bannon is always busy with Deathwish, and guitarist Kurt Ballou is always behind the boards of some of the best heavy music coming out today.
Now that it's Best-Of List Season, Kurt has given us a list of his favorite 2014 releases that he recorded, produced, and/or mixed. Here's what he had to say about it:
I'm pretty terrible at writing these "10 best albums of 2000 whatever" things because, as a recording engineer, after concentrating on music for 10 hours a day, every day in my studio, listening to music isn't a priority when the day is through. I kind of hate it, because I really love music, but I also need some time to reset my ears and brain. So, when asked to contribute to these sorts of things, I'm always a bit embarrassed to respond with, "uhhh... I'm only really familiar with the stuff I recorded." But I recorded some killer records this year, so fuck it - here's some shameless self-promotion. In no particular order, here are some of my favorite 2014 releases that I recorded, produced, and/or mixed.Self-promotion or not, it's a list of great records. Check it out, with his commentary, below...

Boston Strangler at Acheron in 2012 (more by Sarja Hasan)
As is generally the case, there's a whole bunch of cool hardcore/punk shows in NYC in the coming months. Here's a rundown of upcoming local shows and tours passing through NYC that you might want to check out:
The excellent UK sludgy hardcore outfit Shrapnel are touring the US and will be landing in NYC for a matinee show at The Acheron on December 6 with their tourmates, DC's Red Death, and New Jersey mainstays Razorheads. It starts at 3 PM and Tickets for the all ages show will be $10 at the door. All dates are listed below.
The following Saturday (12/13), the Acheron will play host to a loaded Massachusetts-centric hardcore bill that will bring appropriately-named Boston-based HC rippers Boston Strangler to town. They'll be joined by fellow Massholes Waste Management, Peacebreakers, Oblivionation, Jock's Blood and Moron. Despite everyone being from the same state, this is actually a pretty varied bill as these things go, with the classicist approach of Boston Strangler, Waste Management's slower chug, and the surprisingly rangy (dare we say poppy) sound of Moron providing some great contrast. Tickets for that one are on sale now.
Just one week later, there will be yet another stacked hardcore show at Acheron on December 20. This one will feature Spain's Orden Mundial, who are also playing that previously-discussed Puce Mary show at Palisades a day earlier (tickets). They'll be joined by Philly crew Blank Spell, as well as locals Mommy and Pox. Tickets are on sale now. Both shows are part of the Spanish band's tour, and those dates are all listed below.
After you flip your calendar to 2015, head to Saint Vitus for more HC on January 1. This show will bring the great Austin band Glue together with local ragers Warthog and the post-punkish Gainesville crew Allergy. The lineup will be filled out by locals Nandas, and tickets are on sale now. Glue have that great, sludgy, groovy Texas sound on lock, Warthog's local reputation speaks for itself, and this should be a great show.
On January 4 at Palisades Montreal post-punk inflected band Proxy will take the stage with Hank Wood and the Hammerheads, who put out the great Stay Home LP earlier this year. They'll be joined by Pox, who are also playing that Orden Mundial show. Tickets for this show are not yet up, but they'll likely be available via Ticketfly.
Long Island's Backtrack will rep New York Hardcore at the Every Time I Die show at Webster Hall on December 12. Also on that show are The Ghost Inside, Architects UK and Hundredth. Tickets are still available.
Crime In Stereo @ BK Bazaar in October (via BV Instagram)
Long Island melodic hardcore crew Crime in Stereo are playing the mostly pop-punk Glamour Kills Holiday Fest at Webster Hall on December 16. Aside from them, that show features PA pop-punks The Wonder Years and a ton of other likeminded bands. Tickets are on sale now.
On a similar note, Comeback Kid will be back on their tour supporting Four Year Strong to play Irving Plaza on January 22. Expire, Handguns, and Heart To Heart are also on the bill. Tickets are on sale now.
This Saturday (12/6) is Madball's 20th anniversary celebration of their debut album Set It Off at the Marlin Room at Webster Hall. They'll be joined by Turnstile, Death Before Dishonor, Take Offense and Downpresser. Tickets are still available.
For something a little less hardcore and a little more street punk this Saturday, Blanks 77 are playing NYC at Grand Victory before they play the Bouncing Souls holiday shows in NJ later in the month. They'll be joined by Dead Tricks, Parasitix and Breaking Sounds. Tickets for that are on sale now.
That about does it for the coming weeks. Did we miss anything?
Check out a whole mess of song streams from these bands, as well as tour dates for Orden Mundial and Red Death/Shrapnel, below...

Only Crime (featuring current and former members of Converge, Descendents, Black Flag, Modern Life Is War, Tegan & Sara and Good Riddance) are playing Saint Vitus on October 19 before The Fest. Tickets for that show are on sale now.

Art for Shiner's The Egg
Shiner was a band from Kansas City, Missouri that was active from 1992 to 2003. The group formed in 1992, and quickly found wide exposure, releasing a vinyl EP in 1993 and touring with acts such as Sunny Day Real Estate, Chore, Jawbox, Season to Risk, The Jesus Lizard, and Girls Against Boys. The group released their first LP, Splay (recorded at Steve Albini's Chicago studio) in 1996, and a second album, Lula Divinia the next year. Sub Pop took notice, and released a 7" single of the group's songs "Sleep it Off" and "Half Empty". Following this the band toured with Hum in 1998. A third full-length, Starless, was released on a label run by members of The Descendents, Owned and Operated, in 2000. A fourth LP, The Egg, would follow before the group broke up in 2002.Shiner called it quits with a show in their native Kansas City in January of 2003, with its members taking to projects like Every Time I Die, The Damned Things, The Life & Times, With Knives, and many others.
Close to ten years later, the band is back for a quintet of reunion shows in the US in celebrate of The Egg's reissue, due on August 7th. The dates include stops in Lawrence, Kansas, Chicago, LA and NYC at Irving Plaza on August 11th with Errortype:11. Tickets are on sale.
In related news, Errortype:11 shares members of Primitive Weapons, who will team with Whores, Family, and Tiger Flowers at Saint Vitus on June 13th. Tickets are on sale. As previously mentioned, Whores will also play Union Pool on June 15th with Harkonen, The Atlas Moth, and Fight Amp as part of a Brutal Panda/BV-BBG Northside event. Tickets are still available, or get in with your Northside badge.

"Shit Happens: The Tour" crash-landed at the sold-out Studio at Webster Hall on 11/3. Featuring headliner Every Time I Die with Howl and She Rides, the show marked the return of the great Trap Them, who was last seen in NYC supporting Cave In at the also-sold-out Knitting Factory close to a year ago. Since then, the band has kept a low profile on the live circuit but released the killer Filth Rations EP on Southern Lord and recorded a new LP with Kurt Ballou (!) which is due at their new home Prosthetic Records in March of next year. Look for that, I will.
More pictures from the mayhem and all setlists except Trap Them's from The Studio at Webster Hall are below.
Trap Them at Knitting Factory (more by Samantha Marble)
Trap Them and Howl will hit the road for a string of dates with Every Time I Die as part of "Shit Happens: The Tour", tagging The Studio at Webster Hall on 11/3 in the process. Tickets are on sale. The show is one of two Howl dates in the NYC area, as the band will play Southpaw on 9/23 with Valient Thorr and Junius (who recently played Acheron). Tickets are still on sale for that too.
Meanwhile, Trap Them will spend the month of September working on their new LP for Prosthetic Records with Kurt Ballou at God City, documenting the process on their spankin' new blog.

Happy New Year and Welcome Back to The Week In Metal! We took some time away, but believe me, the hate only grew STRONGER.
Wolves In The Throne Room have emerged from the dark forests of the Pacific Northwest to announce a pair of new releases and drop more details on their previously announced upcoming live LP, Live At Roadburn 08! First up, the Malevolent Grain EP will hit Southern Lord with a 180-gram LP bang, with Conspiracy Records dropping a small pressing of picture discs for the record (a limited batch of CDs will be available on tour). Then on March 31st, the band will drop Black Cascade their new full-length on Southern Lord! Both Malevolent Grain and Black Cascade were recorded by Randall Dunn/Mell Dettmer and are the first to feature new guitarist (former touring member) Will Lindsay of ex-Middian / Age Eternal fame. In addition, WITTR's Live at Roadburn 08 will be released with a companion DVD available with the first pressing of 500 copies, with 150 coming in gold vinyl with a silkscreen. Full WITTR tour dates are below, including their date at Scion Rock Fest.
Obscura, an astonishing tech-death band from Deutchland that may or may not be named after the classic Gorguts LP, are streaming a trio of new tracks from massive and recommended upcoming LP Cosmogenesis. The previously announced Down/Weedeater/Evil Army tour has been postponed.
With a tagline like "2 stages + 2 days = Total Brutality", you better f'n deliver.
