Fang Island & Anamanaguchi @ Knitting Factory (pics)

Fang Island lock on with their jaws and don’t relent. The Brooklyn band never gave up its hold on an enthusiastic audience at their sold out show at the Brooklyn Knitting Factory Monday night. Fang Island evade outright comparisons with an enticing mix of textured guitar polyphonics, uplifting vocal harmonies and mosh-worthy tumult. For their encore the band played a groovy cover of Mariah Carey’s “Always Be My Baby,” obviously for the many people over time who have wondered what that song might sound like with triple harmonized lead guitars mimicking the melody.
Idolands and Anamanaguchi opened the show. Anamanaguchi flaunted an equal love of fallen electronics and Blink 182 (already apparent, they highlighted their influence even more by momentarily flirting with the riff from “Dammit”), spitting gleefully acrid 8-bit melodies on top of Marshall stack guitars and matter-of-fact power pop.
