After 16 years, Fat Beats has announced the closing of the legendary label's two remaining retail locations in New York and Los Angeles. Fat Beats will celebrate the legacies of the stores, which are scheduled to close in early September (New York: September 4th, Los Angeles: September 18th) by throwing a series of blow-out sales and tribute parties open to the public during their last weeks. Fans can check www.FatBeats.com for updates.I should have asked my job to pull out pre-tax dollars for Fat Beats back in the day; I used to EMPTY my pockets there on a weekly basis. The Fat Beats label and distro will live on, but the retail store is sadly no more. More on those "tribute parties" soon, but until then, long live Fat Beats!Fat Beats' longest running and most famed location is at 406 Avenue of the Americas in Manhattan. Since the 1994 opening of Fat Beats' flagship retail location, hip-hop fans have traveled far and wide to visit the iconic store. With locations soon following in Los Angeles (7600 Melrose Ave.), Atlanta, Amsterdam, and Tokyo, the record stores were a place to experience hip-hop culture and its legacy, which became a global phenomenon. "The closing of Fat Beats is just like one of my friends passing away. They promoted vinyl at its highest degree for the culture of good music and that makes it more difficult to say goodbye," says DJ Premier.
record store day @ Permanent Records in Greenpoint (autovac)

Hi everyone...Mystery of Two were the house band at Permanent Records on that day. The Drums and The Pains of Being Pure at Heart performed sets at Other Music. Billboard reports (via) that "this year's Record Store Day was, again, a success when measured by awareness, turnout and sales."We at Permanent Records just wanted to take a moment to thank all of you so much for making this year's Record Store Day the unbelievably huge success that it was. You all helped make it the biggest weekend we've ever had, and we sincerely thank all of you for your continued support of our little record store. Hopefully you managed to get most (if not all) of the Record Store Day exclusives you were looking for. If you'd like to see photos from the big day (which, if you were at the front of the line that morning, you are probably in), click here.
We do still have some of the Record Store Day exclusives in stock... so if you haven't made it in to check out some of these limited new releases, it's still not too late! They're on display, right in front of you as you walk into the store.
So, since we're still recovering from the mayhem of this weekend, we're taking a break from our New In Stock / Back In Stock mailer this week. Rest assured, we have plenty of new records available this week, but if you wanna know what they're are, you'll just have to come in and look for them. You know, like old times.
Thanks again everyone. We truly appreciate your business.

Buckshot (Black Moon)+Smif N Wessun @ KF in November (more by Tim Griffin)

For those of you regretting the fact that you missed the great Black Moon & Smif-n-Wessun rip through their classic LPs, you're in luck! The two crews will once again team up to rock A Tribute To The Classics, AKA Black Moon's Enta Da Stage and Smif N Wessun's Dah Shinin', not one, but TWO times in the coming months (and that doesn't even count their appearance at June's Brooklyn Hip Festival).
One of those shows, August 12th in NYC's Brower Park is FREE. It's one of three free concerts the city is throwing in Browser Park this summer. Full schedule below.
So what the hell may top Black Smif N Wessun beltin' out the classics live, and for FREE? Well, the other 'Tribute To The Classics' show happens at Southpaw on May 23rd (THIS SATURDAY), and this time Black Moon and Smif-N-Wessun will share the bill with their Duck Down labelmates, the great Marco Polo & Torae! Tickets are still available for the Brooklyn show.
..On his 2007 critically acclaimed album Port Authority, Polo recruited a who's who of MC's like Kool G Rap and Kardinal Offishall to ride over his hard-hitting, boom-bap instrumentals. Torae, on the other hand, has certified his rep as one of the game's illest lyricists in a similar fashion with remarkable wordplay on his highly touted 2008 street album Daily Conversation. So, in the spirit of great hip-hop duos, the producer and the MC signed with Duck Down Records in 2009 to release their collaborative album Double Barrel.Marco Polo & Torae's new album, Double Barrel, is due on June 2nd. Look for the duo to bless the legendary Fat Beats with an in-store performance on the same day, and they too will be playing at this year's Brooklyn Hip Hop Fest. Check out two tracks from their record above.Double Barrel pays homage to New York's mid-'90's rap scene, when artists like Gang Starr and Wu-Tang Clan reigned supreme... Throughout the album pays homage to the genre of rap that influenced the duo and even features critically acclaimed heavyweights like M.O.P., Masta Ace and Sean Price to help balance out the track list.
