This year's 4Knots Music Festival, which goes down on June 29 at at Pier 17 at South Street Seaport, is looking like its going to be one of the best free shows in NYC this summer. It runs from 1-8 PM across two stages, and during that time we'll get sets from Kurt Vile, The Men, Parquet Courts, Marnie Stern, Reigning Sound, White Lung, The Babies, Fat Tony, and Heliotropes. And now the lineup's got one more addition: local YYYs-inspired rockers Hunters. The new flyer is below. Show is all ages, and like we said, free.

As mentioned, Lil B is playing the not-free (and now sold out) 4Knots afterparty at Music Hall of Williamsburg (6/29) that night. And that lineup's been expanded now too, now including hip hop producers Clams Casino and Keyboard Kid. There are still a lot of second stage acts to be announced. Stay tuned.

White Fence and Paws are also playing a free show at the Seaport this Friday (6/14).

While Bonnaroo is happening in Tennessee and Northside is going down here in Brooklyn, up in Toronto, ON it's time again for NXNE. Much like SXSW, the festival spans film, interactive, comedy and art, but the music portion runs tonight (6/12) and runs through Sunday (6/16) at various venues all over city. The centerpieces are the free big concerts thrown at Younge Dundas Square. This year's Social Distortion on Thursday (6/13), The National on Friday (6/14), Billy Talent on Saturday (6/15), and Ludacris with Joey Bada$$, Deniro Farrar, The Underachievers, Fat Tony, and more on Sunday (6/16).

Our friends at M for Montreal are throwing two parties at NXNE. The first is at Sneaky Dee's on Friday with with Mauves, Webster, UN, Brazos, plus Julian Lynch and The Luyas who are on a collaborative tour (that plays Northside too). There's also a "special guest" at 2 AM and for the real partiers, Psyche Tounge at 3 AM.

Then on Saturday (6/15) its the Panache Booking and M for Montreal Bruise Cruise (which they did last year too) with Mikal Cronin, We are Wolves, Odonis Odonis and Fat Tony... on a boat! Flyer for both parties is below.

There are over 1000 acts playing NXNE this year, including Fucked Up, Dan Deacon, Villagers, Still Corners, FLAG, Mikal Cronin, Calexico, Why?, Merchandise, just to name a new -- check out the full NXNE schedule. BV photographer David Andrako will be there covering the action so look for pictures in the coming days.

Sloan, who moved from Halifax, NS to Toronto a long time ago, are celebrating the 21st anniversary of their label, murderecords, with a party at Great Hall on Friday June 14. Sloan will perform the entirety of their first EP, Peppermint, which was the label's innagural release, The Super Friendz (which at times included Sloan's Chris Murphy) and and Mike O'Neill who some of you may remember from his '90s band The Inbreds. There's also a limited-edition box set of murderecords 12 7" singles they released in the '90s that will come with a commemorative book. Only 500 of these are being made and will go on sale next week via Sloan's Website. Sloan, you may remember, also recently released a hardcore tribute 7". You can check out a video about the murderecords box set, along with a flyer for the NXNE party, below.

Black Hippy at Downtown Music Festival in NYC (via @me_acosta)

The Downtown Music Festival, which is coming to multiple North American cities this year, kicked off its first one in NYC on Friday (5/10) across various LES venues.

The biggest highlight of the artists I saw was the Black Hippy crew, who went on at Capitale at around 1:30 AM. All four guys, Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, and Jay Rock, came out together for a few posse cuts to start the show, and then Ab-Soul, Schoolboy Q, and Kendrick each did their own mini-sets to follow that. They had a ton of fun with it, focusing on crowd pleasers, and taking it a little less seriously than when the members play their own gigs (in a good way). We've seen them make appearances at each other's shows, but getting a chance to see each rapper in the group sampling their own stuff and no one member taking the limelight over another is an entirely different appeal. It showed how diverse each rapper really is (Kendrick has the introspective songs, Q has the party bangers, and Ab-Soul has the tripped out ones -- and PS, we want to hear more from Jay Rock!), and like I said, it was a super fun show.

Houston rapper Fat Tony opened that show with a solid set, which he used much of to promote his new album, Smart Ass Black Boy, which comes out June 11 via Young One. If you haven't heard it yet, you can stream that album's single, "Hood Party," which features Kool A.D. and Despot, below. Tony will be back in NYC for the free 4Knots Music Festival in June.

Another standout of the festival for me was Earl Sweatshirt, who played Element at around 11 PM with Syd tha Kyd as his DJ. Odd Future supporters have turned on the group a bit (or at least the way it was when Tyler and Hodgy Beats were basically running it) and Tyler's so-so new album Wolf didn't help that, but Earl's been hailed as something of a saving grace for the group. It's obviously too soon to tell if Earl's gonna pull it off (though his recent singles have been promising), but whether intentionally or not, his show on Friday worked by being good for very different reasons than the ones that initially gained Odd Future attention. He didn't talk much between songs, didn't have any "punk" stage antics of a large group of hypemen, and OF's shock-factor-turned-predictable-offensiveness was almost never to be found. Instead, Earl focused on classic-style rhymes and proving himself as an adept emcee. There's still no release date for his upcoming album, Doris, but once it does come out, it should be pretty interesting to see where he goes with it.

TEEN @ Glasslands. Sept. 2013 (more by Courtney Dudley)

The Downtown Music Festival happens in two weeks (May 10 - 11) at NYC venues on or below Houston St. A few artists have been added to the fest's line-up: Nguzunguzu, Antwon, TEEN, Branchez, Mess Kid, Jade <3 & Blind Benny, Anais Mitchell, Crush Distance and Nire & Nani. Tickets (single day and two-day passes, and VIP passes) are still available.

The festival has also announced the daily line-ups, so we now know things like that Black Hippy and Fat Tony will be playing at Capitale on Friday night (5/10); Earl Sweatshirt, Ryan Hemsworth and Antwon will be at Element on Friday; and Ratking, Black Dave, Vashtie, Mr. Muthafuckin Exquire and Jade <3 & Blind Benny will be at Tammany Hall on Saturday night (5/11), to name a few. One of the most eclectic lineups in the US, Hopscotch Festival in Raleigh, NC, will be back for 2013 on September 5 -7. Pulling from all genres, this year's line-up includes names like Big Boi (who plays NYC tonight), Spiritualized, Sleep, Wolf Eyes (who have a new video), The Breeders (performing Last Splash), John Cale, Kurt Vile & the Violators, Gorguts, Inter Arma (who play NYC on Saturday), Double Negative (who played NYC this past weekend), Swearin' (them too), Pissed Jeans, Dan Friel, Waxahatchee and many many others. White Lung @ Bowery Ballroom last weekend (more by Fred Pessaro // BBG)

As mentioned a few times, the Village Voice's 4Knots Music Festival goes down on June 29 at Pier 17 at South Street Seaport with headliner Kurt Vile & the Violators, plus The Men, Parquet Courts and Marnie Stern. The fest just announced five more acts: Reigning Sound, White Lung (who just played with Parquet Courts at Bowery), The Babies, Fat Tony and Heliotropes. With two stages to fill, there's still more acts to be announced.

Reigning Sound's Greg Cartwright will get to know the Pier 17 stage pretty well by summer's end, as his other band, Oblivians, will play there for the Seaport Music Festival on June 7, which is also free. As mentioned, Reigning Sound recently signed to Merge Records who will release that band's new album at some point this year.

As mentioned, Downtown Records are taking their Downtown Music Festivals to different North American cities this year, including NYC from May 10 to 11 across various LES venues, including Mercury Lounge, Bowery Ballroom, Angel Orensanz Center, Pianos, Cake Shop, Tammany Hall, Element, Capitale, Rockwood Music Hall and more.

In addition to the previously announced lineup of Black HIppy (aka Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, and Jay Rock), Purity Ring, Earl Sweatshirt, DIIV, Sky Ferreira, Trash Talk, Palma Violets, Teengirl Fantasy, and others; more acts have just been added. Those new acts include Andrewy Wyatt (of Miike Snow), Autre Ne Veut, Guards, Ryan Hemsworth, Port St. Willow, Kilo Kish, Ratking, Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire, Vashtie, Fat Tony, d'Eon and Kingdom (playing with Kelela, who sang a song on the Teengirl Fantasy album last year and sings a song on the new Kingdom EP this year, which you can listen to below).

2-Day passes for the festival have sold out, but single day tickets for May 10 and May 11 are still available. The day-by-day lineups have also been announced, and you can check those out below.

Milk Music/Fat Tony/The Blind Shake @ Bruise Cruise, Austin, TX, 3/10/2013

Though the music portion of SXSW isn't in full force yet, there are still some shows that have gone down, including yesterday's (3/10) Bruise Cruise with Milk Music, Fat Tony, The Blind Shake, and Outer Minds. Like Bruise Cruise lineups always tend to be, it was a good party-style way to kick off SXSW with three punkish bands and an energetic rapper to top things off. Pictures from that cruise are in this post.

All four bands have other SXSW shows coming up, and Milk Music will be at our Thursday day party on the outdoor stage with Cloud Nothings, METZ, The Spits, Death, Rough Francis, and Single Mothers. It's free with RSVP.

Fat Tony also just released the song "Hood Party," which features Kool A.D. (formerly of Das Racist) and Despot), and will appear on his new album, Smart Ass Black Boy, which is due out on June 11 via Young One Records. You can download that track above or stream it below.

The Bruise Cruise was thrown by booking agency Panache, who also has other upcoming SXSW shows too.

As mentioned, Indiana rapper Freddie Gibbs has a few shows scheduled this month and next, including one in NYC on January 30 at Santos Party House. Since we last spoke, openers have been added to that show, and those include Children of the Night, Fat Tony, and Push Montana. Tickets for that show are still available.

Back in September, Freddie released Baby Face Killa, another in a solid run of mixtapes and EPs that continue to highlight Freddie's skills as a highly aggressive MC. He revealed the video for Baby Face Killa track "The Hard" last month, which you can watch, along with a stream of the entire mixtape and a list of all upcoming dates, below.

Since opening in March, the Flat has been a haven for edgy music and affordable drinks. "It's amazing how many people we know live within blocks away," said Max Brennan, the owner. A decade ago, he founded Lit, a bar, gallery and performance space on Second Avenue in Manhattan. Das Racist cohort Lakutis, who appeared on Das Racist's 2010 LP, Sit Down, Man, and who released a free EP last year on the group's Greedhead label with production and guest spots from the members, will be opening the two NYC area shows on Das Racist member Kool A.D.'s upcoming tour with Fat Tony. We already mentioned that the tour includes Mercury Lounge on July 30, and more dates have since been revealed, including a NJ show at Stanhope House on August 5. Tickets are available for the Mercury Lounge show and the Stanhope show.

Like Das Racist, Lakutis doesn't rap without a sense of humor. If you can't tell from song titles like "I'm Better Than Everybody" or "Ja Rule," then lend your eyes to the music video below of "Pool Party," during which Lakutis spends the entire time smoking a blunt behind a giant roll of toilet paper while delivering tongue-in-cheek sexed up lines about "hanging with Mila Kunis in the pool" into a cell phone. Lakutis' EP, I'm In The Forest, can be streamed and downloaded for free at the Mishka bandcamp.

As mentioned, Kool A.D. was orginally scheduled to play the Shortcuts party at Santos tonight (7/19) with Angel Haze but has since dropped off. Angel Haze's Reservation EP is out now and can be streamed/downloaded for free HERE.

Brooklyn Hip Hop Fest 2011 (more by Brook Bobbins)

The 2012 Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival runs from Monday, 7/9 (tonight) through Saturday (7/14). As mentioned, Busta Rhymes is headlining, but since we last spoke, more artists have been announced. The fest kicks off tonight at Brooklyn Bowl with a stacked lineup of Freeway, Young Guru, Evitan, 1982 (Statik Selektah & Termanology), REKS, and more. Tickets for that show are still available. Festival passes will only be accepted between 8 PM - 10 PM.

On Thursday (7/12), Public Assembly will host "Salute the DJ," with sets from DJ Chuck Chillout, DJ Sucio Smash, Ralph McDaniels, M. Will, KJ, and DP One. Tickets for that are available.

The final day, July 14, includes 'Family Day' at Pier 3 at Brooklyn Bridge Park, and the Busta-headlined show at the Brooklyn waterfront with Ka, Clear Soul Forces, Chuuwee, Fat Tony and more TBA. There's also an after party at the Knitting Factory with an early show by Ana Tijoux, Rebel Diaz, and Javiera Mena (tickets) and a late show by Jasmine Solano, Melo-X, CSC Funk Band, DJ Evil Dee, and "special invited guests." (tickets).

Ultramagnetic MCs at ATP NJ 2011 (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)

As mentioned in What's going on? last night, Prodigy's upcoming "Queens Day" show at Irving Plaza, which was supposed to happen next week (6/19) has been cancelled. Though he did play a private Rock the Bells kickoff show at Santos Party House last night (6/13) with (according to the flyer) Ghostface Killah, DMX, Jadakiss, and Hit Squad

Q-Tip's "Offline" party (a DJ gig), also scheduled at Irving Plaza, is still set to happen this Friday (6/15) at the Manhattan venue.

Ghostface Killah's other upcoming shows include the free Prospect Park show on 6/23, a Wu-Block party at Highline Ballroom (8/8) (tickets on sale 6/15), and Rock the Bells with Wu-Block. The Highline show is only with Ghostface and Sheek Louch, but for Rock the Bells, the whole crew will be there (Ghostface, Raekwon, Sheek Louch, Jadakiss, and Styles P).

Meanwhile, Raekwon will be in NYC for the previously discussed Best Buy Theater show (7/26) with Tyler, the Creator, and Earl Sweatshirt. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (6/15) at noon.

Ghostface and Raekwon play a free show together, and much sooner, in Toronto as part of NXNE on Sunday (6/17). Action Bronson, who plays a free show in Red Hook Park (6/19), will be at the Toronto fest too. The entire music portion of NXNE kicked off yesterday (6/13) and runs through the weekend.

Killer Mike will be at NXNE too, and his tour with El-P, Despot, and Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire kicks off on Tuesday (6/19) in Atlanta. It hits NYC on July 13 at Irving Plaza. Ticketsplayed SOB's with Spaceghostpurrp in celebration of Purrp's new album, Mysterious Phonk. Purrp's also got a couple Shortcuts parties under his belt. Speaking of, one of those (sans Purrp) goes down at Santos TONIGHT (6/14) with Fat Tony and Fat Trel (tickets).

While NXNE is going on in Toronto, Brooklyn will be getting its own multi-venue music festival with Northside Festival, which also happens this weekend.

As mentioned, Kool Keith plays a Northside show at Brooklyn Bowl TONIGHT (6/14) with Lushlife. Lushlife recently dropped a remix of "She's a Buddhist, I'm a Cubist" with Angel Deradoorian, Cities Aviv, G-Side, Big Baby Gandhi, Deniro Farrar, and KDz Kenny Dennis. You can stream that below Tickets are still available for the Brooklyn Bowl show and we're also giving away a pair. Contest details are below.

As usual, Questlove will DJ the Brooklyn venue after that show (tickets).

Kool Keith also plays as part of Ultramagnetic MCs at a Northside show at MHOW on Sunday (6/17) with Phony PPL. Tickets for that show are still available. Phony PPL also play SOB's on July 24 with Blackbear. Tickets for that show are on sale.

GZA & Grupo Fantasma @ Bonnaroo 2012 (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)

And speaking of hip hop Northside shows at MHOW, GZA (backed by Grupo Fantasmo like he was a Bonnaroo) plays two (early and late) shows at the venue TONIGHT (6/14). Both are sold out, but you can try and get in with your Northside badge.

Aside from Kid Sister at Sugarland on Saturday (6/16), not much more hip hop is happening at Northside, but there are other good hip hop shows tonight and this weekend.

Yasiin Bey (formerly Mos Def) plays the previously discussed show at the Apollo Theater TONIGHT (6/14) as part of Blue Note Jazz Festival. Tickets for that show are still available FOR THE SHOW THAT HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED FOR OCTOBER 28th.

Blue Note Jazz Fest also gives us a free Central Park Summerstage show on Sunday (6/17) with Groove Theory, Soulive, Riq and Rah with Strings (Black Thought + Rahzel), and DJ Questlove.

EPMD and DJ Scratch play a free show at Herbert Von King Park TONIGHT (6/14). They also team up for a NYC show at BB King's on July 18 with Marley Mari and Big Daddy Kane. (tickets)

Hip hop producer RJD2 DJs a party for the ongoing 'One Step Beyond' series at the American Museum of Natural History on Friday (6/15) with Cosmo Baker, Import/Export, and visuals by Glowing Pictures with special guest Shantell Martin. Tickets for that are available.

You can also catch Tech N9ne and Machine Gun Kelly on the Hostile Takeover Tour which takes over the NYC area on Saturday (6/16) at Starland Ballroom in NJ (tickets) and Sunday (6/17) at HIghline Ballroom (tickets). Be careful during Machine Gun Kelly's set though; TMZ reports that he was just sued $15,000 for slicing open a bouncer's finger. Ouch.

Apple Stores are hosting hip hop in-stores all month.

Once all the Northside craziness ends, you can catch Ab-Soul at his previously discussed NYC show on Thursday, June 21 at SOB's. Tickets for that show are still available.

Miami rapper/producer SpaceGhostPurrp, who played our hip hop stage at Hotel Vegan this past SXSW, is set to releases his debut commercial album, Mysterious Phonk: The Chronicles of SpaceGhostPurrp, on his new label, 4AD, a label otherwise best known for their post-punk/goth/dream pop/etc output. You can grab a new track from the album, "No Evidence," via a widget below, and check out the new video for "The Black God." The album artwork and tracklist are also below.

SpaceGhostPurrp will be making a few appearances in NYC this week before heading overseas for his first European tour later this month. The NYC dates include the Rustie-headlined Shortcuts party at Santos on Tuesday (5/15) and The Standard Hotel on Wednesday (5/16). Tickets for the Santos show with Rustie are still available.

There was also an SOB's show announced in some places, but that show is probably not happening. The Santos show will be the second time SpaceGhostPurrp played a "Shortcuts" party.

Speaking of rappers who played BV-SXSW, Fat Tony (who is pictured with Purrp above) will be in NYC for a show at Glasslands on June 11 with Tom Cruz, Juiceboxxx, Ratking, Old Money, and Mess Kid (DJ). Tickets are on sale now. Meanwhile Tony has a couple of Texas show scheduled.

UPDATE: Fat Tony also plays a Shortcuts party at Santos on June 14 with Fat Trel, Mess Kid (DJ), and Farrington G (DJ). Tickets are on sale.

As you know, BrooklynVegan is taking over ALL THREE STAGES at connecting Austin venues Hotel Vegas & Volstead for FOUR DAYS STRAIGHT this week, and it's all 100% FREE (no RSVP or badges either). There's a big outdoor stage, and smaller stages inside Hotel Vegas & Volstead. Collectively we're calling the four day long party "Hotel Vegan" (located at 1500 E. 6th St, Austin, TX).

Slayer, Thee Oh Sees, Public Enemy, Girls, Danzig Legacy, (Danzig + Doyle von Frankenstein playing Misfits, Samhain & Danzig), Hot Snakes, Diplo, Major Lazer, Henry Rollins, Ted Leo & The Phramacists, Spank Rock, Murder City Devils, Hum, Lykke Li, Passion Pit, Four Tet, Rakim, The Damned, Austra, Purity Ring, and Flynt Flossy are just a few of the acts announced today as part of the Fun Fun Fun Fest 2011 lineup. The new additions to the Austin, Texas festival, which takes place from 11/4 - 11/6, are in addition to the the previous "lineup leaks" that included Brian Posehn, Odd Future, Okkervil River, M83, X (performing "Los Angeles"), Reggie Watts, Flying Lotus, Tune-Yards, Ra Ra Riot, Kid Dynamite and others

2011 is the festival's sixth year, but first at its new home Auditorium Shores (no more Waterloo Park). Tickets are on sale now.
