Parts & Labor

Parts & Labor will toast Constant Future, their new album, with a near constant round of touring through the end of May. The tour, divided into two legs, kicks off on home turf on the same day the album comes out via Jagjaguwar, on March 8th at Monster Island Basement with Pterodactyl, Fiasco, and Fuck Ton and then heads to SXSW. In April the band embarks on the second part of the North American trip. They kick off a European tour in May. All dates are below.

The new LP, which you can digitally get NOW if you pre-order from Insound, was produced by Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, Mogwai, Sleater-Kinney) and marks their fifth overall in their close-to-a-decade existence. Download two tracks off the album for free above.

Strange Boys...
Strange Boys

The Saturday, June 13th show at the Market Hotel seemed to be running pretty closely on schedule. Unfortunately, that meant I missed the sets by Fiasco, Germs (MIA) (a Germs cover band) and most of Atlanta's Coathangers. What I did hear from that last band was loud and brisk and definitely put them on my must-see list for the next time they're in town.

Closing the night were Austin's The Strange Boys and L.A. band Mika Miko, who have been on tour together since the beginning of June (they also played a show on Sunday at Tilden Beach - more pics HERE, and later Sunday night at the Cake Shop, and travel together through the month).

The Strange Boys clicked through a set of blues-tinged garage rock that filtered its sound through the sun-baked expanses of the South. Singer Ryan Sambol's voice croaked through the band's twangy guitars and distorted swampy ambiance. The guys played a straight-ahead cover of Creedence's "Lodi," which garnered catcalls throughout the set for more CCR. At one point, Jenna from Mika Miko jumped in for a sax solo that squonked clean through the roar of the band.

Beer flew through the air for Mika Miko's set. Even before it started, someone spilled a beer on Michelle Suarez's guitar amp, forcing her to borrow another. Shortly after the band kicked things off, someone in front blew their foamy Bud into the crowd, covering most of Mika Miko and those around. Not taking any shit, singer Jennifer Clavin confiscated the offending drink and took a swig. Besides the beer, there was also a lot of sweat in the room, which lubricated the room's moving bodies. On stage, Mika Miko inflected garage punk forms (mined minutes earlier) with the flavor of post-punks like Wire and SoCal trio the Minutemen (who themselves covered CCR). Mic troubles were certainly forgivable in the context (lots of people falling on the stage) -- you can't really tell what they're saying anyway. An encore finished out the night.

The Homosexuals

Matador Records helped Sonic Youth celebrate the release of their new record The Eternal with a party at Home Sweet Home on the Lower East Side of Manhattan last Friday. The semi-private show had local bands playing Sonic Youth covers while the actual Sonic Youth was hanging out in the crowd.

Bands included The Antlers, Tiny Masters of Today, Apache Beat, The Homosexuals (backed by members of Fiasco), and "The Goo Believers" (at least that's what I think they called themselves). They were Chris Brokaw (Come, Codeine), Jemina Pearl (Be Your Own Pet, Ecstatic Peace label), Matt Krefting (Ecstatic Peace label), Zachary Cale, John Maloney (Sunburned Hand of the Man), and Jaiko Suzuki (Electroputas). You can see Thurston Moore watching them from the sidelines in some of the pictures below...

Sonic Youth @ No Fun Fest 2009 (more by Lori Baily)
Sonic Youth

Maybe you caught Sonic Youth's noise set at No Fun Fest or have been streaming The Eternal through Matador's Buy Early Get Now program.

If both left you wanting more, you'll have your chance tonight (May 22nd)

First, Bill Nace, ie. the guy who wasn't Lee at NFF, will play the late set at The Stone tonight (10pm). Joining him will be Greg Kelley on trumpet and Jake Meginsky on percussion. Before that, the Stone's May curator, Grey Gersten, performs with tape-guy G. Lucas Crane and drummer Ryan Sawyer.

If you'd rather follow the The Eternal route (ie. you're sick of listening to the record in your home), Matador is hosting a listening party for the album tonight (5/22) at NYC's Envoy Gallery (131 Chrystie St.) It's free admission, capacity permitting, but RSVP is required. Flyer below.

After that party, there's also an invite-only after-party with LIVE music at Home Sweet Home, which will be closed to the public. Local bands will be playing Sonic Youth covers. Those local bands include The Antlers (who played Bowery Ballroom last night), Suckers (who have a lot of other shows coming up), Joan As Policewoman (who recently played with Iggy Pop), Tiny Masters of Today (who are playing Citysol this year), and The Homosexuals (who are now Bruno Wizard with Fiasco as his backing band according to someone that got to the Dan Deacon show last week early enough to see their unannounced set), AND "more are being confirmed" (for tonight's show). We have three pairs of tickets (guestlist spots) to give away for the afterparty. Info on how to win them, below...

SY played a free 4th of July show last summer in Battery Park (to be released as a bonus disc with some copies of the new record). That gig was within eyeshot of the Statue of Liberty and other iconic landmarks. This summer the band is playing a free show under St. Louis' famed Gateway Arch on July 17th as part of that city's Live on the Levee summer festival. It's just one of the many dates on Sonic Youth's summer North American tour, the openers for which were recently announced.

Listening party flyer and contest details below...

Shea Stadium

Shea Stadium, the new Brooklyn space that's hosting a Showpaper benefit with Fiasco, Dinowalrus and others on May 30th, is opening in full this weekend (May 22nd).

On Friday, May 22nd, Whack, Grocery Thief, and No One & the Somebodies play the venue. Then, Shea hosts a kick-off party on Sunday, May 24th with Golden Error, Pow Wow!, Bad Credit No Credit and Donner Party Picnic with the So So Glos DJing.

It turns out the venue is also rigged for live recording and has plans to release recorded shows on their website ("think Daytrotter with an audience").

Shea Stadium is a progressive art space that serves a dual purpose as both a recording studio and live music venue. Our deal is simple....bands are invited to come and use our space and our equipment free of charge to make a live recording of their set. During these live recording sessions our doors will be open to the public: all bands are encouraged to treat these sessions as a show and bring as many of their friends/fans as they like. A small cover charge at the door (we have to pay the bills right??) grants you admission to the entire night of sessions as everyone is welcome to stay for the duration of the evening's festivities. As both a studio and show space, our mission is to create a fun-loving environment that will bring out the best in all the bands who perform, as well as the audience.
The new venue was started by producer Adam Reich, who is a childhood friend, and the producer of, The So So Glos, who are some of the people behind Market Hotel. It's one big DIY family.

More info on the venue, the kick-off-show flyer, and more below...

Shilpa Ray @ Santos (more by Faith-Ann Young)
Shilpa Ray

We already knew that Fiasco is one of the band's playing Citysol 09 on July 11th at Stuyvesant Cove Park in NYC (23rd St in Manhattan - all the way east). The confirmed lineup for that free show also includes Shilpa Ray and Her Happy Hookers, Love Like Deloreans, Hi Red Center and Schwervon!.

The annual environmental festival runs from July 10th-12th at Stuy Cove Park with the concert day being the Saturday. Like last year, Digiwaxx will be curating the fest's hip-hop/funk lineup. We helped out with the whole lineup in 2007.

Fiasco will also be at Citysol's pre-fest youth benefit concert at Solar One (same location) on Saturday, June 13th.

The benefit concert on June 13th was conceived and curated by [Citysol's] 18-year-old high school intern, Corinne Monaco. The other confirmed bands on the bill are Starscream, Run Time Error, The Mighty Handful, Consumer Feedback, The Sediment Club, The Whisky Crusaders and Lorrain and Her Demons.
Fiasco is playing another show that same night at the Market Hotel with Mika Miko, the Strange Boys and Coathangers.

It'll be Shilpa Ray's second year in a row at Citysol -- she also played the 2008 fest. This year she'll also be playing the Sly Stone tribute at Castle Clinton just a fest days after on July 16th, and a just-announced show at Southpaw on July 1st.. Her May Wednesdays residency at Pianos continues on the 20th and 27th of this month.

The Stuyvesant Cove Park is not to be confused with the Stuyvesant Town Oval, which is hosting its own free shows throughout the summer. The schedule for that series includes Kaki King, Jay Reatard, the Budos Band (who played Citysol in 2007) and more.

Videos from last year's fest, with upcoming Fiasco tour dates (including one at a new space - with a familiar name - Shea Stadium) below...

"I'm in a more serious relationship with the two of them than I have been with any girlfriend I've ever had in my life. We were all in shittier bands before this." - Cory of Stupid Party

Stupid Party

Stupid Party are not just another three piece from Brooklyn. They've actually been around for a few years, playing their raw punk, metal and punch you in the face, pop songs, in lands both home and away. Literally. "We kept/keep playing shows at our house which without a doubt has hosted the best punk shows in New York," said Cory, the band's vocalist and guitarist (who I had a chance to talk to via email).

Stupid Party released a 7" on Starcleaner Records last year, which is now in it's 2nd pressing, and in March they put out their first LP on Freedom School Records. Check out one MP3 above with more streaming at their MySpace.

Tonight (5/11) they open for Times New Viking (who played Market Hotel last night) and Vivian Girls at Bowery Ballroom (making this a sick triple bill!) According to Cory, "We'll probably be blacked out." Let's hope not. Get there early to make sure you don't miss them.

They also play Brooklyn D.I.Y. festival Hillstock on June 6th. All tour dates and fliers below...

The Coathangers @ Pianos (more by Faith-Ann Young)
The Coathangers

Mika Miko, the Strange Boys, the Coathangers and Fiasco all converge in New York City for a Saturday, June 13th show at the Market Hotel.

I say converge because that show is part of the Mika Miko/Strange Boys tour that'll be cutting across the US in June. The Coathangers share the bill on some dates. That's until July, when the Strange Boys switch ships and continue on the road with just the Coathangers. All details below.

The Coathangers, who releaed their third record, Scramble, on Suicide Squeeze in early April, also play another NYC show on Sunday, June 14th at Brooklyn's Glasslands Gallery with Ex Humans, K-Holes, DJ Aliz. The same Sunday, Mika Miko and the Strange Boys will venture into Manhattan for a show at the Cake Shop.

Both mentioned Brooklyn shows happen during the Northside Festival.

Strange Boys' debut record, And Girls Club, came out in March on In the Red. Mika Miko's newest, We Be Xuxa, is coming out May 5th on Post Present Medium.

Fiasco doesn't have a new record -- though in January '09 they did release a free, split, two-song EP (with NYC band Banzai) called Fabulous Bozo, where both bands cover the NYC band Snuffy. It's available courtesy of Beautiful Records for free (zip file above). Fiasco is also playing this year's Citysol Festival at Stuyvesant Cove Park on Tuesday, July 7th in July. Carebears on Fire played Citysol in 2008.

All tour dates, with videos of all four bands at SXSW '09, below...

Fiasco

Fiasco is playing the "Citysol Festival @ Stuyvesant Cove Park" in NYC in July, though despite the July 7th date they are currently listing on their MySpace, I can now confirm that the festival will happen from July 10th-12th. love like deloreans are also on the music part of the bill (July 11th). Stay tuned for more information on the annual free, outdoor, solar-powered show.

AIDS Wolf
AIDS Wolf

AZNightBuzz: You play with the U.S. Girls as well as some other great bands every place you visit. Who are you most excited about seeing?

Aids Wolf: Well, we've already played with U.S. Girls, Can't and Sightings, three acts we were most stoked to play with. We are also salivating for Love Tan, Mayor Daley, Puffy Areolas, PRE, Gay Beast, Shearing Pinx, Dead Machines, The Mayyors and Death Sentence: PANDA! We're really pretty excited for all our bills, playing with bands we are friends with and/or fans of is really important to us. Getting to see the bands we like is one of the things that make touring worthwhile.

Who are you listening to on tour?

Aids Wolf: Thee Oh Sees, Ornette Coleman, ZZ Top, Captain Beefheart, some sweet Balinese classical music, Babe Ruth, Ennio Morricone, Walter Wegmuller, U.S. Girl Meghan talking about eating meat and the sounds of Bob Gainey crying.

Death By Audio hosted Aids Wolf ,U.S. Girls, Sightings, Fiasco, and Talk Normal on Wednesday night, March 11th. That was before all or most of those bands headed from Brooklyn to Austin for SXSW. More pictures from the NYC show below...

Vampire Weekend @ Terminal 5
Vampire Weekend

New Hot Chip EP
Hot Chip

Despite their feverish schedule this year which took in numerous side projects, solo records, countless dancefloor-igniting remixes, production duties and, of course relentless touring (which culminated in their triumphal homecoming shows at Brixton Academy in November) that indefatigable, delightfully off-kilter five-headed electro pop colossus known as Hot Chip have somehow found the time to assemble a lovingly put together little present for their fans. And not only that, but they have managed to rope in the services of none other than the godfather of the experimental psych-prog world, Robert Wyatt and kindred mischievous electronic spirits Geese to help out as well.

Hot Chip with Robert Wyatt and Geese" contains the following tracks:

1. Made in the Dark (with Robert Wyatt)
2. Whistle for Will (with Robert Wyatt)
3. We're Looking for a Lot of Love (with Robert Wyatt and Geese)
4. One Pure Thought (remixed by Geese)

Click HERE to order your copy.

Geese = Emma and Vince from The Elysian Quartet.

In other news, Pitchfork strangely named Hot Chip's Made in the Dark the 23rd album of the year. Bill said:

I am one of Hot Chip's biggest supporters, but Made in the Dark hasn't really held up for me (wheras the Warning still does). And Cut Copy at #4???? The Metronomy record crushes both of those.
Hot Chip are also up for a Grammy and recently made the cover of the NY Daily News.

Also, you may have heard about the cover of Vampire Weekend's "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa" by Hot Chip and Peter Gabriel. The very man who is mentioned in the song, does the singing. Listen to it below.

Vampire Weekend recently ended their whirlwind year on a high note with 4 NYC-area shows, 3 of which were at Terminal 5 (the same venue Hot Chip played twice in October). They were also named the most overrated band of 2008 in Stereogum's Gummy Awards, and they got 7th best album of 2008 by Pitchfork. The latter seems less weird than Hot Chip's ranking, though it's probably even more globally controversial.

Coming up for Vampire Weekend: the Tibet House benefit concert @ Carnegie Hall and a NY Times speaking event.

Picture's from Vampire Weekend's third of three Terminal 5 show (the one Fiasco opened - 12/6), the Peter Gabriel song, and more, below...

Zach Hill, Performance Attire May Vary...
Zach Hill

Spazzy drummer Zach Hill (Hella/Marnie Stern/Team Sleep/The Ladies) will be in town over the next two days performing "Necromancer" with Peer Pressure or, the second disc of the 2CD extravaganza known as Astrological Straits (out now on Ipecac). So what's "Necromancer" all about, and who the hell is Peer Pressure?

HELLO ! TO THOSE THAT HAVE BEEN INQUIRING ABOUT WHAT AND WHO "PEER PRESSURE" MAY BE IT'S ACTUALLY MY DRUM SET! HAHA THATS STRAIGHT TALK! IN THE FUTURE THIS MONIKER WILL MOST LIKELY DEFINE A COLLECTIVE OF HUMAN BEINGS PLAYING SONGS AND MY DRUM SET, BUT FOR THIS TOUR ITS A METAPHOR FOR THE DRUMS AND THATS ABOUT ALL I'M BRINGING AND ALL IM PLAYING. TO MAKE IT CLEAR SO THERES NO CONFUSION ABOUT MY UPCOMING PERFORMANCES I AM PERFORMING A 45 MINUTE NON STOP HEAVILY IMPROVISED RENDITION OF THE TRACK "NECROMANCER" OFF OF MY NEWEST SOLO RELEASE. THIS WILL BE ME ON DRUMS AND THE LAPTOP ON LAPTOP OR THE IPOD ON IPOD. I PLAN ON PERFORMING THE MORE SONG ORIENTED MATERIAL OFF THE ALBUM WITH A FULL BAND IN THE THE FUTURE BUT FOR MANY REASONS IT WAS UNREALISTIC AT THIS JUNCTURE. SO THIS IS HOW I WILL BE EXPRESSING MYSELF IN THE NOW ASIDE FROM THE SHOWS WERE ITS NOTED THAT I'LL HAVE SOMEONE AWESOME SITTING IN WITH ME! [Zach Hill]
Zach Hill WILL have "someone awesome sitting in" with him at the Knitting Factory in NYC on 11/18, namely Marco Benevento. Also on the bill: Pattern Is Movement and Subtle (their last tour "for some time", they are going on hiatus). Tickets are still on sale.

Hill also plays Death By Audio in Brooklyn with Fiasco the next day (11/19). Hill is also opening for the mighty Fantomas when they ring in the New Year, in San Francisco.

Speaking of Subtle, doseone and jel of Subtle (aka Themselves) will headline the "Anticon 3rd Annual 10-Year Anniversary" at NYC's Knitting Factory on December 18th with Yoni Wolf (of WHY?), Buck 65, Sole, Alias, Odd Nosdam + Jel, pedestrian + DJ Thanksgiving Brown. Tickets are on sale.

Odd Nosdam recently posted a free download of beats from 2002 - 2003 entitled CIRCUS faux PREZ beats! and a mixtape... Mixtape Super Delux. Download 'em and other MP3's above.
