The discerning folks over at Amazon have announced their picks for the best albums, songs and artists of 2013, and Daft Punk's Random Access Memories, Vampire Weekend's Modern Vampires of the City and Chvrches' The Bones of What You Believe filled out the top three spots on their best albums list.

A bit more of a surprise was Deafheaven coming in sixteenth overall with Sunbather and landing "Best Hard Rock & Metal" honors in both the artist and album category--Russian Circles won "Best Hard Rock & Metal" song with "1776", stealing the trifecta that was just within Deafheaven's grasp. Sixteenth-best album of the year and best hard rock and metal album of the year on a huge site like Amazon is pretty high profile for Deafheaven, the San Francisco post-black metal band that still road warriors-up for shows at small clubs. But they've been on the big stage before--to be specific, for Apple's keynote announcement for the iPhone 5c, when the cover of Sunbather graced one of the five iPhones on the projection screen behind the presenter.

Check out the top 20 best albums according to Amazon below, compare that to more old school and indie retailer Rough Trade's list, and head over to Amazon to see what else they thought was a cut above...

"The DeLuna Stage was set up on the beach, facing away from the Pensacola pier that stretches into the Gulf of Mexico. On the opposite side of the beach looking back was actually the Heritage Stage, a stage filled with the sounds of New Orleans jazz music. The quarters weren't as sprawling as Hangout [Festival in Alabama], but the Windcreek Stage location, in the adjacent parking lot, made for a much easier human traffic flow between the two primary stages. That concrete often kept the festival from feeling like it was intended, but its proximity also kept fans from missing anything from the weekend's largest acts.

Then, the setup allowed for unrestricted access to the ocean. So, you give and you take.

NBC Sports sponsored a "sports bar," lined with no fewer than 10 HD flat screens. The welcome addition allowed a region which loves college football to lounge near the beach and catch their favorite team on Saturday. Alabama's pay-per-view contest against Florida Atlantic was not carried, but most other national broadcasts were, including Auburn's near-miss against LSU." [Birmingham News]

Florida beach music festival, Deluna Fest, wrapped up its third year back on Sunday, 9/23. If you've been following along, you already saw a big set from the first day, the Bad Brains shots, Joy Formidable, and the rest of the pictures from the second day. Now here's our final set of pictures which include Bob Mould (who also played with the Foo Fighters the night before), the Corin Tucker Band (who then toured her way to NYC for two shows), The Wallflowers, Fitz & the Tantrums (who are on the soundtrack to the new movie "Butter"), Superchunk (whose frontman has a show coming up at Mercury Lounge), and Florence & the Machine. BFF

After busting up the gang in 2000, snarky mid-'90s piano trio Ben Folds Five reunited this year with a new album on the way and a tour, which they're on now. The tour stops at Central Park Summerstage tonight (9/14), their first NYC show in 12 years. Tickets for tonight's show are still available. BFF will also return to the NYC area for a show at Port Chester's Capitol Theatre on October 9 with Kate Miller Heidke (tickets) and a couple days later they will play opening night of New York Comic Con on October 11. Tckets for that are still available too.

Ben Folds Five, best known for their ballad "Brick" back when people still held up lighters at shows (1997), have a new album, The Sound Of The Life Of The Mind, which is their first since 1999 and is out next week (9/18). The record was funded via Pledgemusic and is a little mellower than the bouncy, fuzzy pop of their Clinton-era singles like "Underground" and "The Battle of Who Could Care Less" but his sense of humor seems intact. You can listen to tracks at SPIN, TeamCoco and Rolling Stone.

Ben Folds Five are also playing Florida's Deluna Fest which happens September 21 - 23 in Pensacola Beach, FL and also features Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, Bob Mould doing Copper Blue, Diplo, Florence & the Machine, Band of Horses, and many more. Tickets for Deluna Fest are still available and full line-up is below.

A list of all Ben Folds Five dates, a few classic clips and that Deluna Fest lineup are below...

New Brooklyn food and music festival GoogaMooga just spent two extremely sunny days in Prospect Park which is hard to believe on this extremely rainy Monday. And though the weather was super, a few other details were not, and for that they've apologized along with a promise to be back next year. You've already seen pictures from Saturday and Sunday. Here are some more from Sunday. They continue below...

Hall & Oates & Peelander-Z - in Prospect Park (5/20/2012)
Hall & Oates

Peelander-Z

Unlike Chris (who took these pictures), I didn't get to the Nethermead until 5pm, but what I saw was consistent with reports that the second day of GoogaMooga was free of a lot of the kinks experienced on Saturday. Lines were shorter on Sunday, there was more food, there were maybe a few less people, and everyone just generally seemed to be having a great time. Conversations on the first day were all about how long you had to wait to get something. Conversations on the second day seemed to be more about how much better things were, and how awesome it was to hear Hall & Oates play 80 minutes of hits in a huge park on a beautiful day to thousands of people, many of whom were dancing and singing along. Sure there were still lines for popular items, but nothing like the day before, and there were a lot less of them (would you agree?).

Other highlights of Sunday's free but ticketed event included a memorable performance by colorful punks Peelander-Z (whose red member can be seen flying over a porta-potty in one of the pictures above), a rocking set of Led Zeppelin tunes by Lez Zeppelin, soul by both Charles Bradley and Fitz & the Tantrums, another hour ExtraMooga Q&A session by the extremely entertaining, even to vegans, Anthony Bourdain who went into detail on his opinions of vegetarians at the request of one audience member (Anthony appears live in Brooklyn again at BAM on June 9), and an ExtraMooga night-closing Big Gay Ice Cream Dance Party complete with a DJ, alien dancer things, drag queens, free ice and ice cream, and scantily clad stilt workers (also ExtraMooga only).

The plan seems to be to bring GoogaMooga back in 2013 (hopefully next time with more vegan options), so stay tuned. More pictures from Sunday in Prospect Park, below...

Wild Flag's Carrie Brownstein & the Hives @ Coachella Sunday - 4/22/2012
Coachella 2012 - Second Week Day 3
Coachella 2012 - Second Week Day 3

"The second weekend brought record heat. Festival-goers jockeyed for patches of grass around the shaded perimeters. They pounded frozen lemonade at $6 a cup.

"It feels like a different world from last weekend," The Shins frontman James Mercer said. "It was Iceland last week."

While the weather forced some practical fashion choices, Coachella's sartorial influence was noted well beyond Indio. Joan Rivers and Kelly Osbourne debated Coachella-inspired fashion trends, and the wider cultural significance of the festival, on the E! Channel program, "The Fashion Police."

Osbourne, a Coachella regular, proclaimed, "When you go to Coachella, all the girls are half-naked and 22." Rivers, who joked that she goes to Coachella, too, quipped, "If David Hasselhoff was there, this means officially Coachella is no longer cool."" [MYDesert.com]

How was your Coachella?

After DJing a party on Friday night and headlining with his band Radiohead on Saturday, Thom Yorke kept busy on Sunday by DJing a Rolling Stone pool party with Nigel Godrich, and then showing up as a not-so-surprise, special guest during Modeselektor's Sunday night set in the Mojave tent while Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg headlined the main Coachella stage.

Coachella 2012 - Day 3
Coachella 2012 - Day 3
Coachella 2012 - Day 3

"Weekend one of Coachella 2012 not only confirmed rock fans' rabid appetite for live music but reminded the music industry that the past is a lot closer than it used to be. There were no rock acts from the 1960s or early '70s on the bill. The look back was dedicated to Coachella's continuing affection for reuniting British bands from the late '70s and early '80s--this year, it was Buzzcocks, James, Madness, Pulp and Squeeze. Other reuniting bands on the bill included American alt-rock bands Firehose, Mazzy Star and At the Drive-In; and Refused, a punk group from Sweden that hadn't been heard from since 1998. One could argue that the "appearance" by the late Shakur was an admission that to become a musical force again, West Coast rap needs a resurrection. Though the beats conceived and developed by Dr. Dre, Shakur, Snoop Dogg and others are now woven into rock and pop's vocabulary, rap had little presence at Coachella 2012, save for the ingenuity of the late Sunday-night oldies show.

And if there was any doubt that electronic dance music is a dominating force, even if it's still underappreciated by the mainstream, Swedish House Mafia and Justice played the main stage. The big tent dedicated to dance music was rarely less than filled to a boisterous overflow." [Wall Street Journal]

It's actually hard to believe that after all that went on over the weekend THE EXACT SAME COACHELLA IS ABOUT TO HAPPEN AGAIN. But back to last weekend for a second...

You already saw pictures from Friday and Saturday, video of an idiot falling off a wooden structure, watched Frank Ocean's set, and Azealia Banks's. The Weeknd's too. You saw Refused's setlist and some videos. You already know what At The Drive-In played on Sunday, and streamed their set in full after you were done watching Real Estate's and M83's, not to mention parts of Bon Iver's and Andrew Bird's. You're already well aware that Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg and many special guests headlined on Sunday, and you even saw the pictures of them and watched the Tupac hologram video. Now here are the rest of the Sunday pictures, and they continue, below....

Fitz

Though I don't see it on the Livestream (or this one, or this one), Fitz & the Tantrums are playing stripped down versions of a couple of their songs ("Moneygrabber" and "Dear Mr. President") at Zuccotti Park for Occupy Wall Steet right now (11:30am on 11/10). Fitz says:

"We wanted to show our support to the Occupy Wall Street protestors everywhere who are keeping the focus on the culture of greed that is pervasive in our financial institutions and the lack of reform and accountability that has taken place. We are not anti-capitalist but we are not in support of an untethered Wall Street without regulations and without the Glass-Steagall act that protected our society after the great depression up until the 1980's. We Need Reform Now."
They're in town to play a sold out show at Terminal 5 tonight (11/10). Don't have tickets? We're giving away a pair on our Facebook right now.

Fitz & the Tantrums will return to NYC to offer yet another soulful New Year's Eve option. They play Gramercy Theater. Tickets are on various presales now and go on general sale Friday at noon. Lee Fields, who they shared a Summerstage bill with, plays The Bell House on the same night.

MTK

The MTK: Music To Know Festival planned for Saturday - Sunday, August 13 - 14, in East Hampton, New York, is cancelled. A statement is as follows:

"It is with heavy, heavy heart that we regret to inform you that the inaugural MTK: Music To Know Festival in East Hampton will not take place. Despite our unique vision and arranging a world-class line-up, ticket sales were not adequate to allow the event to continue. We wanted to let everyone know now before engaging more deeply.

Along with our ticket holders, vendors, sponsors, business associates, colleagues and friends in the community, we too are filled with deep disappointment. We pledge to endure during this difficult time with the same integrity and professionalism displayed throughout the creation of this event.

Ticket holders should check www.musictoknow.com next week for more information.

Strangely Escape to NY, the other new Hamptons music festival, is going on as planned as we speak. Patti Smith and Best Coast played it last night.

The MTK Fest's lineup included Vampire Weekend, Chromeo, Dawes, Bright Eyes, M Ward, Ra Ra Riot, Fitz and the Tantrums, Matt and Kim and more.

Truck America, another NY Festival, was cancelled last week (though no official announcement has been made about that yet).
