BOY

The Year is 1984, and on the rural East Coast of New Zealand "Thriller" is changing kids' lives. Inspired by the Oscar nominated Two Cars, One Night, BOY is the hilarious and heartfelt coming-of-age tale about heroes, magic, and Michael Jackson. BOY is a dreamer who loves Michael Jackson. He lives with his brother ROCKY, a tribe of deserted cousins and his Nan. Boy's other hero, his father, ALAMEIN, is the subject of Boy's fantasies, and he imagines him as a deep sea diver, war hero and a close relation of Michael Jackson (he can even dance like him). In reality he's "in the can for robbery". When Alamein returns home after 7 years away, Boy is forced to confront the man he thought he remembered, find his own potential and learn to get along without the hero he had been hoping for.
BOY was written and directed by Oscar nominee Taika Waititi (Flight of the Conchords, Eagle vs Shark) who also stars in the film. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2010, where it was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize. It since has done really well in New Zealand, where it was released to much acclaim. It will get an American release on March 2, but you'll be able to see it a bit sooner than that.

BrooklynVegan is proud to present a free screening of BOY at Knitting Factory in Brooklyn on Tuesday, February 28. The movie starts at 8 PM and will be followed by a Michael Jackson dance party in the front bar at 10 PM.

Like our 2010 screening of Exit Through the Gift Shop and our 2011 screening of Senna, Knitting Factory will be filled with chairs and the screening is first come, first served.

Taika Waititi is also funding the American release of the film on Kickstarter. As of this post, there's 8 days to go and the $90,000 is just under halfway met.

Watch the film trailer below...

Arcade Fire

And the nominees for "Album of the Year" are:

* The Suburbs by Arcade Fire
* Recovery by Eminem
* Need You Now by Lady Antebellum
* The Fame Monster by Lady Gaga
* Teenage Dream by Katy Perry
Crazy.

Also funny: Mumford & Sons are up for Best New Artist against Justin Bieber (and Drake, Florence & The Machine, and Esperanza Spalding)

Robyn is up for Best Dance Recording against Lady Gaga (and Goldfrapp, La Roux, and Rihanna).

Arcade Fire are also nominated for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals against Muse, Kings of Leon, The Black Keys, and... Jeff Beck & Joss Stone.

The Black Keys also landed in the "Best Rock Instrumental Performance" along with... Dave Matthews.

The Black Keys and Mumford & Sons and Kings of Leon and Muse are also all in the "Best Rock Song" category.

"Best Alternative Album" category:

* The Suburbs by Arcade Fire
* Infinite Arms by Band Of Horses
* Brothers by The Black Keys
* Broken Bells by Broken Bells
* Contra by Vampire Weekend
So they give that to Arcade Fire, since Lady Gaga will probably get Album of the Year, or maybe Arcade Fire will just get screwed and they'll give it to someone on a major.

Other names that got nominated: Cee-Lo, Janelle Monae, Big Boi, John Legend & The Roots, Jay-Z, Darcy James Argue's Secret Society, Flight of the Conchords, Devendra Banhart (for "Best Recording Package"), Oh No Ono (ditto), Anais Mitchell (ditto), Danger Mouse, Gorillaz, and Carol Burnett. Eugene Mirman @ ATP NY (more by Ryan Muir)
Eugene Mirman

On October 6th, we at Sub Pop will once again celebrate the lonely art of stand-up comedy with the release of Eugene Mirman's new album God Is a Twelve-Year-Old Boy with Asperger's. This will mark only the 5th comedy record we've released in our entire history. With our catalog numbers soaring impressively skyward, numbering in the 800s now, that's a fact worth noting. 5 out of 800+? That means just about one half of one percent of our releases are from stand-up comedians. What I'm driving at here, people, is that we're really choosey about our comedy. God Is a Twelve-Year-Old Boy with Asperger's is Eugene Mirman's second record on Sub Pop and we couldn't be more proud.
Check out the premiere of a new track off Mirman's record above. We're also running a contest where you can win a copy of the record, and more importantly a Eugene Mirman tote bag. Details below.
Nerve: What's the best way to pick up a comedian?

Eugene: It depends where they are in their career. If they're just at the beginning, you can offer to buy them socks. That would probably cover it. And in the middle, you could either recognize them or pretend to recognize them, and they would be delighted. And then at the highest echelons, you would ignore them or be mean, say you've never heard of their movies, something like that.

Some of Eugene's recent accomplishments include performing at ATP NY (see above), holding his own comedy festival (Sept 17-19) (for the second year in a row), and appearing at the Julian Plenti show at the Gugg on September 25th. He also often appears on the TV program Flight of the Concords, and Sub Pop is releasing that new album too. I Told You I Was Freaky is out October 20th. And we have an exclusive musical track, "Sugalumps," from Season 2 of the show, which can also be found on that record, above.
We see you girls checkin' out our trunks
We see you girls checkin' out the front of our trunks
We see you girls lookin' at our junk
Then checkin' out our rumps
Then back to our sugalumps
Coming up, Eugene can be found at the Highline Ballroom on November 17th with "Rumpus editor Stephen Elliott, Todd Barry, Rick Moody, David Rees, Jonathan Ames, Starlee Kine, Care Bears on Fire and more Special Guests tba."

Contest details, and album art and tracklist for both discs are below...

Eugene Mirman @ Le Poisson Rouge (more by Tim Griffin)
Eugene Mirman

Dates have been announced dates for this year's Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival, which will take place September 17th - 20th at The Bell House in Brooklyn. Lineup and ticket info to come.

Last year's fest happened September 15th-18th, with events at the Bell House and Union Hall. Featured acts included Janeane Garofalo, John Oliver, Kristen Schaal, Aziz Ansari, Michael Showalter, Mike Birbiglia, Fred Armisen and many others.

Aziz Ansari, now an even huger celebrity thanks to a co-starring role in the new NBC TV series Parks and Recreation, will be back in NYC soon and will be making at least two appearances while he's here. The first is at Eugene Mirman's weekly Tearing the Veil of Maya show at Union Hall on Sunday, May 3rd @ 7:30 pm (tickets at the door) (Eugene won't actually be there though). The next is one night later at UCB as part of Leo Allen's weekly, late-night Whiplash show. Tickets to the latter are free, and you probably want to make a reservation.

Aziz's other upcoming appearances include the Sasquatch Festival, Bonnaroo, and a TBA DVD taping in NYC in "early June".

Mirman is currently on tour with Flight of the Conchords (which is why he won't be at Union Hall on Sunday), though he didn't jump on till after the group's two NYC shows.

Mirman also recently toured with John Wesley Harding's Cabinet of Wonders. That show visited NYC three times: February 11th, March 11th, and April 15th (all three links have pics, one of which is reposted above). There remains a May 21st show hosted by Philly radio show World Cafe Live. Tickets for that show are on sale.

Speaking of John Wesley Harding (aka Wesley Stace), on Thursday, April 30th, he'll be performing at CUNY's Proshansky Auditorium on a bill titled "Collaborations/Elaborations: The Music of Daniel Felsenfeld." The event is part of the PEN World Voices Festival, and will feature Harding, Mark Z. Danielewski, Daniel Felsenfeld, Rick Moody, and others. Details on that below.

In addition to that show, Harding has his own UK tour coming up. He just did a reading/performance at the Union Square Barnes and Noble on April 27th.

Details on the PEN Festival show, with all upcoming Eugene Mirman dates and a video roundup of the comedian's recent activities, below...

Flight of the Conchords

Last night (April 14th), Flight of the Conchords played the first of two NYC shows with Kristen Schaal at Radio City.

Sporting boxy robot helmets (red eyebrows, bobbing antennae) and silver lame shirts, the pop duo Flight of the Conchords took the vast stage of New York's Radio City Music Hall last night and launched into their current hit, "Too Many Dicks (On the Dance Floor)."

An expressive crowd -- every one of the venue's 6,200 seats was filled, as they will be for an encore performance tonight -- responded to the nerdy New Zealanders with raucous catcalls and applause that rarely let up during the hourlong set. [Bloomberg]

The band's second Radio City show is tonight (April 15th).

FOTC show star and tourmate Eugene Mirman hosts tonight's sold out Nada Surf show at the Bell House. Want to go? The venue will be selling 40 tickets at the door.

Mirman will also be appearing at John Wesley Harding's Cabinet of Wonder show at (Le) Poisson Rouge later in the evening.

Holly Miranda is also on the bill for the Bell House tonight. If you miss her, she has another NYC show scheduled for Tuesday, May 5th at the Mercury Lounge, with Illinois. Tickets are on sale now.

Like Flight of the Conchords, Neko Case did a two-show NYC run -- the second of her two shows at Nokia was last night. Opening her first show (April 13th) on was Crooked Fingers, who played a second show at the Bell House last night. Tallest Man on Earth played their first of two shows last night - the second is at Bowery Ballroom tonight with Red Cortez - both bands will play Culture Shock at SUNY Purchase this weekend.

Last but not least (and not related), just wanted to throw in a mention of Canadian songster Hawksley Workman, who played Joe's Pub shows in December and January, is at the same venue tonight. Tickets are still on sale.

Did you do your taxes?

Videos from FOTC's set last night below...

Flight of the Conchords

Flight of the Conchords are going on tour and playing Radio City Music Hall in NYC two April days in a row. Tickets went on pre-sale yesterday, and they do again today @ 10AM (new password = HESUGALUMPS).

FOTC

Tickets are on pre-sale (@ 1:15 pm) (password = sugalumps) for an April 15th Flight of the Conchords show at Radio City Music Hall. That is one day after the same show at the same venue that went on pre-sale at 10:00 am this morning.

Flight of the Conchords

The Onion AV Club: The first season [of Flight of the Conchords] is almost an encyclopedia of the New York alternative-comedy scene, with Kristen Schaal and Eugene Mirman in recurring roles, and guest appearances by Todd Barry and Demetri Martin. Was there a thought that that might be a good way to get the show to an American audience?

Bret McKenzie: No.

Jemaine Clement: It can go a long time with just New Zealanders, but we try to make sure there's American characters in it. I'm always aware when we're looking through the script that in the first few scenes, there should be an American character.

BM: We didn't cast them to try and break into a market or anything. We cast them mainly 'cause we knew them. And we didn't want to have people that were well-known.

JC: It really is like, "Who do we know?" Todd, Demetri, Arj [Barker], and Eugene are all the Americans we knew.

Tickets go on presale (password = sugalumps) at 10 AM for the 2009 Flight of the Conchords tour including April 14th at Radio City Music Hall in NYC. Kristen Schaal is opening that show. Other tour openers are Eugene Mirman and Arj Barker. One show is with Iron & Wine.

UPDATE: They added a 2nd show at Radio City - on pre-sale since 1:15 pm.

All (updated) tour dates below...

FOTC @ Sasquatch 2008 (more by Chris Graham)
FOTC

U.S. cult hit television show "Flight of the Conchords" follows the travails of a marginally talented musical duo from New Zealand trying to make it in New York City, but in reality the pair are far from struggling.

Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie already have one Grammy, have been nominated for another and the second series of their Emmy-nominated show returned to HBO cable network this month after an absence of more than a year.

James Bobin, co-creator and executive producer, said the second series was delayed by the 14-week writers strike, which ended in February last year, and "the boat to New Zealand," chimed in McKenzie at the show's red carpet launch this week.

McKenzie, 32, and Clement, 35, university friends who formed "Flight of the Conchords" a decade ago to improve their guitar skills, said they set out to make a "funny and musical" TV show and that creating the second series was a little easier.

"When we first started we didn't know what we were doing," said Clement. "We watched lots of sitcoms on video because we had never written one, none of us had written one before." [Reuters]

Season two of the TV show is airing on HBO now (Sundays at 10PM to be exact).

FOTCTickets go on Ticketmaster presale Monday February 2nd at 10AM for a new North American FOTC tour that includes an April 14th show at the elegant Radio City Music Hall in NYC.

In other comedy duo news, Tim & Eric play Nokia Theatre in NYC TONIGHT (Friday January 30th), and Cheech & Chong are at Radio City Music Hall tomorrow (Saturday January 31st).

Flight of the Conchords

Night one (May 6, 2008) of Flight of the Conchords' two night stint at Town Hall was fantastic. Todd Barry opened the show and handily took control of the completely sold out room. A 20-year comedy veteran and favorite of mine, Todd made the season finale of Flight of the Conchords the best Conchords episode yet. The Conchords came out right after Todd and the place erupted. I mean, the place went completely apeshit. Like, Beatles-era apeshit. A girl in front of me even had a Hot Dog sign. They kicked the show off with "Inner City Pressure" and from there continued with a string of classics including "A Kiss is Not a Contract", "Bret You Got it Goin' On" that lasted over 90-minutes. They played two great new tunes too. Sadly, they didn't play "Bowie" which was a crushing let down. Personally I found their between song banter a tad on the meandering side, but I'm definitely in the minority there; the crowd devoured every thing these guys did for the entire show. The interludes served as perfect opportunities for people in the audience to scream song requests and other provocative oaths which the Conchords handled with unprecedented smoothness.

Tonight's show (May 7) is sold out as well, but last night there were a handful of tickets at the box office so it's probably worth stopping by and trying your luck. And for Christ's sake, DON'T buy a ticket from one of the scalpers. The people in line in front of me - a father with his teenage daughter - were turned away because their tickets were forgeries. Thighs has the complete set-list as well as another review.

Neil Hamburger

Well, what else do we need to say about this? "America's Funnyman" ("The World's Funnyman," actually) has decided to sing America's music at last! The country crooning of Neil Hamburger (though some would call it moaning) fits the white blues that is country music to a T! Neil's life story is perfect fodder for the "tear in the beer" genre as well - and Neil's original tunes, such as "At Least I Got Paid," "Three Piece Chicken Dinner" and "The Recycle Bin" bring his personality to the fore. His crack "Nashville West" band includes such luminaries as Dave Gleason, Atom Ellis, Prairie Prince, Rachel Haden and Joe Goldmark, all of whom play and sing their country-fried hearts out to create a sound that is decidedly old-school honky-tonk. All this plus cover versions of John Entwistle, Mark Eitzel and Billy Edd Wheeler add up to a powerful singing debut from America's newest hat act, Neil Hamburger!
Neil Hamburger Sings Country Winners is out this Tuesday April 22nd on Drag City! Some tour dates and a video at the end of this post.

I recently mentioned that Bob Odenkirk and David Cross would soon begin work on a pilot for HBO. Lo and behold, production of David's Situation begins May 9th, 2008 in sunny Los Angeles, with a live audience and everything. This show can't be completed and devoured by my eyes and ears soon enough. If anyone goes to the taping, tell me everything.

In related news, not only is Bob Odenkirk co-writer and director of David's Situation, but it turns out he'll also be playing Mike Birbiglia's older brother in Mike Birbiglia's CBS pilot Mike Birbiglia's Secret Public Journal, a pilot you can read about here.

I had such a wonderful time last June seeing Flight of the Conchords perform live at the Blender Theater in NYC. Now, less than a year later and hot on the heels of a new record, it looks like they'll be playing a handful of dates across the us, including the Sasquatch Festival and two in NYC. As of writing this, there is no onsale info or presale info for those two NYC shows, but hopefully we'll have it soon. In the year since their last NYC gig, the Conchords have blown up even more. They even won a Grammy. I expect there to be scalpers taking advantage of the fans, and tickets getting swallowed up very quickly. Flight of the Conchords

Flight of the Conchords follow the release of their six-track Grammy Award-nominated (it's true!) CDEP The Distant Future with their full-length record album debut, the conveniently titled Flight of the Conchords (which, not at all coincidentally, is also the name of their HBO television series). Produced by Mickey Petralia (Beck Midnight Vultures, Ladytron Light & Sound) in Los Angeles, New York and Wellington, the album features fully fleshed-out and professionally recorded versions of Flight of the Conchords concert and television favorites.
Speaking of SXSW and Sub Pop and more Sub Pop and stuff, the above mentioned and pictured album is out on Sub Pop on April 22nd. Ladies, grab the legal MP3 from the album above. Men, view the entire tracklist below....

Kristen Schaal

Kristen Schaal is a favorite of mine and a favorite of BV readers. Lotsa people know her as Mel from the show Flight of the Conchords, but she's much more than that. She hosts Hot Tub Variety Show with Kurt Braunohler and has a series of videos on Super Deluxe called Penelope Princess of Pets (also with Braunohler). She's also won several awards including Best Alternative Comedian at the HBO US Comedy Arts Festival, an Andy Kaufman Award, and a Best Female Stand-up Award at the 2006 Nightlife Awards in NYC. Recently Kristen parted ways with South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone because her ideas were too weird (their loss!). Kristen took some time to tell BV what tunes she was really into in '07. - Klaus

Zach Galifianakis & Moby

Zach Galifianakis hosted a Bad Art Auction at the Hiro Ballroom on 7/10/07. Once inside, patrons were given a numbered auction paddle (sort of like this), a small auction catalogue, and a bottle cap good for one free Pom based alcoholic drink. Zach opened the show with a pretty decent set peppered with things I hadn't heard yet. The crowd seemed to really dig it, and Zach had a pretty good command of the room. The auction followed, and to my surprise, most of the items went way past the $100 dollar mark. Most of the art was really awful, yet a lot of it was really appealing to me. Musical artist Moby was there, and a performance by Band of Horses followed the auction.

9th Annual Del Close MarathonUCB Theater's 9th Annual Del Close Marathon is near and this one looks like a doozie.

Del Close was the driving force behind improvisational comedy in Chicago for over 30 years influencing Bill Murray, Tina Fey, Mike Myers, John Belushi, Chris Farley and the Upright Citizens Brigade to name a few. After Del's passing in 1999, the UCB started the Del Close Marathon to celebrate their mentor and keep alive his name and teachings for future generations.
