Gene Clark

In 1974, former Byrd Gene Clark released his fourth solo album, No Other, a critical and commercial failure that earned increasingly more recognition over time and was received much more warmly upon its reissue in the early 2000s. Now, just about 40 years later, an indie supergroup will be performing the album in full on a short tour of the Northeast US. The band features both core members of Beach House, Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally, with Victoria handling vocals along with Robin Pecknold of Fleet Foxes, Daniel Rossen of Grizzly Bear, Hamilton Leithauser of The Walkmen (and newly a solo artist), Iain Matthews of Plainsong/Fairport Convention, and Jenn Wasner of Wye Oak/Flock of Dimes/Dungeonesse. They'll be backed by members of Lower Dens, Celebration, Mt. Royal, and others. The full lineup (with mention of who's playing what) is below.

The tour kicks off in Philly on January 22 and it ends in NYC just a few days later at Music Hall of Williamsburg on January 25. Brad Truax (Spiritualized, Interpol and others) will be DJing at all shows and a Gene Clark documentary will screen beforehand too. Tickets for the NYC show go on sale Friday (12/6) at noon.

All dates are listed, along with the full supergroup lineup, a trailer for that Gene Clark documentary, and a full stream of No Other, below...

Dungeonesse

Jenn Wasner's (Wye Oak, Flock of Dimes) most recent musical endeavor, Dungeonesse, will release their self-titled debut album on May 14 via Secretly Canadian. The R&B-ish dancepop project, a collaboration with Jon Ehrens of White Life, released a single last year, you may recall. Says Wasner of the project, "Something that Jon and I talk about a lot is the idea of reclaiming pop music; placing it squarely in the hands of, I dunno, say a couple of regular nerds from Baltimore."

You can check out new track "Shucks" below. Cover art and tracklist are below too.

Dungeonesse

You probably know Jenn Wasner as one half of Wye Oak or from her Flock of Dimes solo project, and now she's teamed up with Jon Ehrens (of White Life and Art Department), who she's played with before for a new synth pop project, Dungeonesse. Dungeonesse will release their "Drive You Crazy" b/w "Private Party" 7" on December 4 via Secretly Canadian and a full length will follow in 2013. You can pre-order the 7" HERE.

The video for the a-side of the new single and its very '80s cover art, below.

Flock of DimeS

The 2012 Hopscotch independent music festival is underway in venues all across Raleigh, NC. Shows happen at night, and during the day. One such example of the latter is a show BrooklynVegan is co-presenting TODAY (9/7) at Pour House (Noon - 5:45PM, 21+, FREE). And it looks like this:

4:50PM - 5:30PM - Flock of Dimes (Jenn from Wye Oak)
3:45PM - 4:35PM - Field Report (Chris Porterfield of DeYarmond Edison)
2:45PM - 3:25PM - Odonis Odonis
1:50PM - 2:30PM - Dope Body
1:00PM - 1:35PM - Made of Oak (Nick from Megafaun)
12:15PM - 12:45PM - White Life
The lineup is a bit of a Baltimore/North Carolina/Wisconsin family affair, headlined by Flock of Dimes which you'll remember is the project of Jenn Wasner from Wye Oak. And like Wye Oak (who also play Hopscotch0, Flock of Dimes is now signed to North Carolina label Merge....
On September 25, Merge will release "Curtain" b/w "Apparition,"the second in a series of 7-inch singles from Flock of Dimes, the solo project of Wye Oak's Jenn Wasner. Limited to 1,000 copies, each 7-inch includes a download coupon for both tracks.

Jenn launched Flock of Dimes in 2011 as a way to explore more experimental recording and songwriting outside of the burgeoning success of Wye Oak. A tour opening for Sharon Van Etten followed, and a debut 7-inch, "Prison Bride" b/w "I Can't Tell You Why (screwed mix)," was released by Baltimore-based Friends Records in April of 2011. There are more singles planned as part of this series, but a full-length is not yet on the horizon.

"These two songs function as a pair of opposites: 'Curtain' documents the thoughtless, obsessed joy of new love, whereas 'Apparition' attempts to catch sight of the ghosts it leaves behind in the wake of its absence," says Jenn.

Produced and realized with the help of Mickey Free, "Curtain" b/w "Apparition" features a beautiful cover photograph by Matthew Yake<./blockquote>If you're in NC, stop by today. Listen to "Curtain" by Flock of Dimes, along with a reminder of Wye Oak's upcoming tour dates (which will hit Maxwell's & MHOW), below...

Dirty Projectors on Fallon
Dirty Projectors

Dirty Projectors played Fallon last night, performing "Gun Has No Trigger" off their upcoming LP, Swing Lo Magellan. They performed their song with their new drummer, Mike Johnson (who has played in Flying and Glass Ghost) and Jenn Wasner of Wye Oak and Flock of Dimes instead of Angel who is on hiatus. DP are going on tour with Wye Oak and playing Prospect Park on July 10 with Wye Oak and Purity Ring. We've confirmed that Fallon will not be the last time you see Jenn playing with DP. Check out a video of the Fallon performance below.

As mentioned, the day before the Prospect Park show, Dirty Projectors will play a much smaller show at Music Hall of Williamsburg (7/9). Tickets for that show go on AmEx presale today at noon. Did you grab any in the Celebrate Brooklyn presale which started yesterday?

Speaking of Purity Ring, they just dropped another new track off their much-anticipated LP, Shrines (due out 7/24 via 4AD), called "Fineshrine." That makes a total of five album tracks revealed before the album's release and if you've been enjoying the others, you'll dig this one too. Download it above or stream it, along with all tour dates, below...

Flock of Dimes

We first discussed Jenn Wasner of Wye Oak's new solo project Flock of Dimes in May which is also when she played a show at Glasslands. Since then Jenn announced that she's working on a full length album, and she very recently posted two "rough little pop songs. not future album cuts, just for fun, and to tide y'all over while i get my shit together." Listen to both of those below, and see Flock of Dimes live again in Brooklyn at Shea Stadium TONIGHT (1/5). More details/full lineup with the songs below..

Flock of Dimes - 5/7/2011
Flock of Dimes

To quote our own post previewing the show,

When Jenn Wasner isn't busy with her band Wye Oak, she makes music as Flock of Dimes. She makes her NYC debut under this name on Saturday night (5/7) at Glasslands with fellow Baltimorians White Life and Other Colors.
And it was in fact a Baltimore family affair at the Brooklyn venue on Saturday night with Jenn even joining White Life during their poppy and energetic set. To add to the family atmosphere, Jon and Emily Ehrens of White Life are siblings and their mother was rocking out in the audience.

Flock of Dimes was usuprisingly great despite throat problems Jenn was having (and the "herbal throat slime" she was forced to drink on stage). Her set included a soulful number she wrote with Aaliyah in mind (appropriately they played Aaliyah and TLC between sets at the club). A video one of one song from Jenn's set and more pictures from the Saturday night show, are below...

Flock of Dimes

When Jenn Wasner isn't busy with her band Wye Oak (whose new album Civilian is amazing), she makes music as Flock of Dimes. She makes her NYC debut under this name on Saturday night (5/7) at Glasslands with fellow Baltimorians White Life and Other Colors. How did Flock of Dimes come to be? Bmore Musically Informed got the scoop:

I was in-between tours, and feeling crazy and maybe a bit overambitious. I decided that the only way I would follow through with making as much new music as I could while at home would be to set a deadline. That morning my friend Ben asked me to play a show at his house. I impulsively agreed. The 5 songs I wrote and recorded in the two weeks preceding the show became Flock of Dimes.
You can check out a stream of Flock of Dimes' "Prison Bride" at the bottom of this post.

As for Jenn's other band, Wye Oak play the music of Dinosaur Jr as part of the Our Band Could Be Your Life 10th Anniversary show at Bowery Ballroom on May 22 (sold out) that also features Dirty Projectors (playing Black Flag), Delicate Steve (playing Minutemen), Ted Leo (playing Minor Threat), Titus Andronicus (The Replacements) Tune-Yards (Sonic Youth), Dan Deacon (Butthole Surfers), St. Vincent (Big Black), and Buke & Gass (Fugazi). Wye Oak then head off on a European tour before coming back to the U.S. for various festivals (Lollapalooza, Outside Lands). All dates below...
