The xx @ Coachella 2013 (more by Wei Shi)
As you may be aware, Baz Lurhmann's glitzy, big-budget adaptatation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's 1925 novel, The Great Gatzby, is out May 10 and stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Toby Maguire, and Carey Mulligan. That same week will see the release of its soundtrack which was curated by Jay-Z and features Jack White, The Bryan Ferry Orchestra, Gotye, Lana Del Rey, Beyonce with Andre 3000, and Jay-Z himself.
It's also got a new track by The xx, titled "Together," which was specifically written for the film. You can stream it, and check out the soundtrack art, full tracklist and a trailer for the film, below....
Alt-J at Mercury Lounge in May (more by Dominick Mastrangelo)
Big day for award nominations. The Oscars announced theirs this morning and the Brit Awards just wrapped up their ceremony for 2013 nominations, with Emeli Sandé grabbing four and Mumford & Sons and Alt-J each getting three. All three of those artists were nominated for British Album of the Year, a list that also included Paloma Faith and Plan B. If you don't know, The Brits are basically the UK's equivalent of the Grammys, though nominees are all British apart from a few "International" awards.
Jessie Ware, Muse, and Adele each got two nominations, and single-digit noms went to Bat for Lashes, The xx, Richard Hawley and The Vaccines.
The entire 2013 Brit Awards nominees list is below.

Superchunk Mac/Florence & the Machine
"The DeLuna Stage was set up on the beach, facing away from the Pensacola pier that stretches into the Gulf of Mexico. On the opposite side of the beach looking back was actually the Heritage Stage, a stage filled with the sounds of New Orleans jazz music. The quarters weren't as sprawling as Hangout [Festival in Alabama], but the Windcreek Stage location, in the adjacent parking lot, made for a much easier human traffic flow between the two primary stages. That concrete often kept the festival from feeling like it was intended, but its proximity also kept fans from missing anything from the weekend's largest acts.Florida beach music festival, Deluna Fest, wrapped up its third year back on Sunday, 9/23. If you've been following along, you already saw a big set from the first day, the Bad Brains shots, Joy Formidable, and the rest of the pictures from the second day. Now here's our final set of pictures which include Bob Mould (who also played with the Foo Fighters the night before), the Corin Tucker Band (who then toured her way to NYC for two shows), The Wallflowers, Fitz & the Tantrums (who are on the soundtrack to the new movie "Butter"), Superchunk (whose frontman has a show coming up at Mercury Lounge), and Florence & the Machine. Check out the rest of the pictures and a Mould video, below...
Then, the setup allowed for unrestricted access to the ocean. So, you give and you take.
NBC Sports sponsored a "sports bar," lined with no fewer than 10 HD flat screens. The welcome addition allowed a region which loves college football to lounge near the beach and catch their favorite team on Saturday. Alabama's pay-per-view contest against Florida Atlantic was not carried, but most other national broadcasts were, including Auburn's near-miss against LSU." [Birmingham News]

After busting up the gang in 2000, snarky mid-'90s piano trio Ben Folds Five reunited this year with a new album on the way and a tour, which they're on now. The tour stops at Central Park Summerstage tonight (9/14), their first NYC show in 12 years. Tickets for tonight's show are still available. BFF will also return to the NYC area for a show at Port Chester's Capitol Theatre on October 9 with Kate Miller Heidke (tickets) and a couple days later they will play opening night of New York Comic Con on October 11. Tckets for that are still available too.
Ben Folds Five, best known for their ballad "Brick" back when people still held up lighters at shows (1997), have a new album, The Sound Of The Life Of The Mind, which is their first since 1999 and is out next week (9/18). The record was funded via Pledgemusic and is a little mellower than the bouncy, fuzzy pop of their Clinton-era singles like "Underground" and "The Battle of Who Could Care Less" but his sense of humor seems intact. You can listen to tracks at SPIN, TeamCoco and Rolling Stone.
Ben Folds Five are also playing Florida's Deluna Fest which happens September 21 - 23 in Pensacola Beach, FL and also features Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, Bob Mould doing Copper Blue, Diplo, Florence & the Machine, Band of Horses, and many more. Tickets for Deluna Fest are still available and full line-up is below.
A list of all Ben Folds Five dates, a few classic clips and that Deluna Fest lineup are below...
The Weeknd at MHOW in April (more by Bao Nguyen)
Canadian R&B singer/Drake affiliate The Weeknd went on his first headlining tour earlier this year surrounding his appearance at Coachella which brought him to NYC for sold out shows at Music Hall of Williamsburg and Bowery Ballroom. Now he's begun revealing more dates for what looks like iwill end up being a full tour surrounding ACL Festival. Two of those dates happen in NYC on October 26 at Terminal 5 and October 27 at Paradise Theater in the Bronx. Tickets for both shows go on sale Friday (8/17) at noon.
Meanwhile, you can also catch The Weeknd in the NYC area when his tour supporting Florence & the Machine with The Maccabees hits Camden, NJ on September 18 at Susquehanna Bank Center. Florence also hits Jones Beach on September 15 without The Weeknd, but with The Maccabees. Tickets for those shows are still available.
The Weeknd's mixtape trilogy is still available for free download on his website. A stream of "High For This" from his House of Balloons tape and a list of all currently known dates are below.
Florence / Dum Dum Girls / the scene, Osheaga Fest 8/03/2012
"I can't believe we walked the whole thing."
This was the opening of an e-mail Saturday morning from my friend, the Montreal based singer-songwriter Leif Vollebekk. Day 1 of Montreal's Osheaga Music and Arts Festival (8/3) was in the books and instead of joining the crush of people all trying to get into the Metro, we opted to walk with a much smaller group of people from Parc Jean-Drapeau, the festival's home, over the closed-off Jacques Cartier Bridge back to the Mile End.
"You know," Leif's e-mail continued, "we could've all just waited for the subway, but then we might have been accused of being reasonable."
What came before the trek from the island to the mainland was a hot, dusty, sweaty blur of music and dancing and a sold-out crowd determined to pull every ounce of enjoyment from their day out.
The highlight for me on Day 1 was always going to be Sigur Ros, who I'd seen just a days before in Philadelphia. Sure, Justice may have been the official headliner on the day, but the Icelandic band, even restricted to their one-hour time slot, felt like the real headliner and reduced the electronic duo and their glorified DJ booth to the equivalent of an afterparty.
Earlier in the day, The Walkmen featured Skyler Skjelset of Fleet Foxes on bass and guitar and Icelandic band Of Monsters and Men packed the field at the Scene Verte stage on the other end of the park for their mid-day set.
The Dum Dum Girls set was delayed with sound issues and once they got going the tech guys spent most of their set running back and forth across the stage adjusting and fixing gear. It was the beginning of a trouble-filled weekend at the Scene des Arbres stage where delays were constant and, on Day 3, Zola Jesus' set was controversially cut short as thunderstorms rolled through. (Festival officials shut her set down just as the worst of the storm had passed.) She took to Facebook to voice her frustration (though what happened in Montreal was nothing compared to what went down at Lollapalooza in Chicago the same weekend).
Gary Clark, Jr. impressed over at the Scene Verte as his loud, fuzzy guitar riffs conjured dancing girls and good vibes.
Along with a beautiful set from Florence and the Machine and a raucous end-of-the-night set from Montreal's Les Breastfeeders, it was a great start to the festival.
Stay tuned for more on Day 2 and 3. More Osheaga Day 1 photos are below.
We just posted about Austra who's coming back to North America (including 9/19 at Music Hall of Williamsburg) after a tour of Europe. She's also one of many artists playing the 2012 Osheaga Festival in Montreal which happens August 3 - 5. Tickets are still available for the three-day event.
In addition to Austra, Osheaga plays host to The Black Keys, Snoop Dogg, Justice, Metric (who play Radio City Music Hall soon), Sigur Ros (who play Prospect Park and are streaming their new LP), Florence & The Machine (who plays Jones Beach this summer), The Weeknd, Passion Pit (who play Governor's Ball soon), The Jesus & Mary Chain, MGMT, Santigold (who just played Irving), Zola Jesus (who just played the Guggenheim) and many many more.
Full Osheaga lineup is below.

"Radio City Music Hall is a "posh venue," Florence Welch noted onstage on Tuesday night in New York. But that doesn't mean you can't straddle your date's neck to get a better view of it.Blood Orange opened the NYC show last night (5/8). Pictures and the setlist (of the headliner only) are in this post.
"If you're with a lady and you like her or you love her, we'd like her to get on your shoulders," Welch told the audience gathered there, a smile fighting its way across her face. One by one in the stately concert hall, women climbed onto their male companions' necks, festival style, and started waving their arms as Welch and her band launched into "Rabbit Heart."
The acrobatics were all to get a better glimpse of Florence Welch, better known as Florence + the Machine, who brought her catalog of romantic pop dirges to a sold-out show at Radio City. "Whenever I come to New York, I never seem to get any sleep!" she bemoaned to the crowd, which included Katy Perry and Nick Lachey, later." [Spinner]
With Radio City out of the way, Florence now has her sights set on even larger NYC-area venues, much larger ones (well, actually she plays CT on Friday and Atlantic City on Monday, but...). Tickets for the Jones Beach show are on pre-sale now. All tour dates HERE. More pictures and the setlist from Radio City, below...
Florence & the Machine @ Coachella 2012 (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)

The NY show is part of a just-announced tour that hits Jones Beach on 9/15, Saratoga Springs on 9/16, and Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden on 9/18. It also visits Hollywood Bowl and other places that are listed below. Tickets for most of the shows go on sale on 5/11 with a City presale for the Jones Beach show starting Tuesday, 5/8, at 10am (and other presales happening after that too).
Support on the new shows will come from The Maccabees (who also have a headlining Webster Hall show coming up) on most dates, and The Weeknd (who just played his first shows ever) on some.

"Weekend one of Coachella 2012 not only confirmed rock fans' rabid appetite for live music but reminded the music industry that the past is a lot closer than it used to be. There were no rock acts from the 1960s or early '70s on the bill. The look back was dedicated to Coachella's continuing affection for reuniting British bands from the late '70s and early '80s--this year, it was Buzzcocks, James, Madness, Pulp and Squeeze. Other reuniting bands on the bill included American alt-rock bands Firehose, Mazzy Star and At the Drive-In; and Refused, a punk group from Sweden that hadn't been heard from since 1998. One could argue that the "appearance" by the late Shakur was an admission that to become a musical force again, West Coast rap needs a resurrection. Though the beats conceived and developed by Dr. Dre, Shakur, Snoop Dogg and others are now woven into rock and pop's vocabulary, rap had little presence at Coachella 2012, save for the ingenuity of the late Sunday-night oldies show. It's actually hard to believe that after all that went on over the weekend THE EXACT SAME COACHELLA IS ABOUT TO HAPPEN AGAIN. But back to last weekend for a second...
And if there was any doubt that electronic dance music is a dominating force, even if it's still underappreciated by the mainstream, Swedish House Mafia and Justice played the main stage. The big tent dedicated to dance music was rarely less than filled to a boisterous overflow." [Wall Street Journal]
You already saw pictures from Friday and Saturday, video of an idiot falling off a wooden structure, watched Frank Ocean's set, and Azealia Banks's. The Weeknd's too. You saw Refused's setlist and some videos. You already know what At The Drive-In played on Sunday, and streamed their set in full after you were done watching Real Estate's and M83's, not to mention parts of Bon Iver's and Andrew Bird's. You're already well aware that Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg and many special guests headlined on Sunday, and you even saw the pictures of them and watched the Tupac hologram video. Now here are the rest of the Sunday pictures, and they continue, below....
Lollapalooza (more by Grant MacAllister)
Chicago Sun Times reports:
Lollapalooza has revealed its official 2012 list of performers -- a typically wide-ranging smorgasbord of genres and styles topped by nearly a dozen mainstage headliners: the Red Hot Chili Peppers, freshly reunited bands Black Sabbath and At the Drive-In, the Black Keys, Jack White, Florence + The Machine, the Shins and Passion Pit, plus spotlighted electronic music including Swedish house titan Avicii, French dance duo Justice and DJ-producer Bassnectar.Check out the full list below...
The annual music festival is scheduled for Aug. 3-5 in Chicago's Grant Park.
Rumored lineups have circulated widely, as they usually do, and Lollapalooza itself stoked the speculation in recent weeks via a series of CTA and online advertisements that seemed to hint at who would be playing.
The ads featured lyrics from such acts as Sigur Ros, Santigold, Jack White, Kimbra, Twin Shadow, the Weeknd, Bloc Party and more -- all bands that wound up on the bill.
Blood Orange @ Converse FADER Fort SXSW 2012 (photo by thereal_lc_)
Blood Orange (aka Dev Hynes), who was just in Austin for SXSW (picture above, video below), is back home in NYC and will play a local show at Justice's favorite club Lit Lounge TONIGHT (3/21) with Rewards and Shuga. Tonight's show is one of a few one-offs for Blood Orange before he heads out on tour with Florence & the Machine. That tour hits NYC on May 8 at Radio City (sold out).
Rewards, who open tonight's show, were also added as an opener to Tanlines' upcoming Bowery Ballroom show (4/12). Tickets for that show are still available. Tanlines were also just at SXSW for a limited amount of shows and released their album, Mixed Emotions, yesterday. Alon with that came a new video for song "All of Me", directed by Julian Barratt of The Mighty Boosh. Watch below.
Shuga, who are also on tonight's bill and were also at SXSW, are on Luv Luv Luv Records, who are presenting tonight's Lit Lounge show and who also manage Blood Orange and Florence, who as mentioned, are touring together. Shuga has another upcoming NYC show at Tammany Hall on Monday (3/26).
Kindness at SXSW 2012 (via)
In related news, Kindness (aka Adam Bainbridge), who, like Blood Orange, records for Chris Taylor's (of Grizzly Bear/CANT) Terrible Records, was also just in Austin for SXSW where he shared a bill with Blood Orange at a Windish party. Kindess also played a Gorilla vs Bear/Yours Truly party and the NME showcase, among others. Dummy Mag wrote about the GvsB/YT show:
Kindess slinked on stage like the consummate crooner: smooth, self-assured and safe in the knowledge his charm would woo the crowd. He was right, too. I was a little too tired to surrender to it entirely but there's no doubting the calibre of Kindess. Top of the pops.Check out some videos of Kindness at SXSW below.
Speaking of Gorilla vs Bear and Florence & the Machine, GvsB just premiered a Clams Casino remix of Florence's "Never Let Me Go." Stream that below.

Dave Mutaine picks his candidate (more by Dana (Distortion) Yavin)
Megadeth is currently on the road with Motorhead as part of Gigantour. The show came to The Theater at Madison Square Garden in NYC, and even more recently to the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago. Right before that they stopped in Canada and that's where MusicRadar caught up with frontman Dave Mustaine. Here's part of their chat:
Speaking of news, you were a correspondent for MTV during the 1992 presidential election. What's your take on US politics in 2012?Gigantour continues.
Dave: "I'm just hoping that whatever is in the White House next year is a Republican. I can't bear to watch what's happened to our great country. Everybody's got their head in the sand. Everybody in the industry is like, 'Oh, Obama's doing such a great job...' I don't think so. Not from what I see.
"Looking at the Republican candidates, I've got to tell you, I was floored the other day to see that Mitt Romney's five boys have a $100 million trust fund. Where does a guy make that much money? So there's some questions there. And watching Newt Gingrich, I was pretty excited for a while, but now he's just gone back to being that person that everybody said he was - that angry little man. I still like him, but I don't think I'd vote for him.
"Ron Paul... you know, I heard somebody say he was like insecticide - 98 percent of it's inert gases, but it's the two percent that's left that will kill you. What that means is that he'll make total sense for a while, and then he'll say something so way out that it negates everything else. I like the guy because he knows how to excite the youth of America and fill them in on some things. But when he says that we're like the Taliban... I'm sorry, Congressman Paul, but I'm nothing like the Taliban.
"Earlier in the election, I was completely oblivious as to who Rick Santorum was, but when the dude went home to be with his daughter when she was sick, that was very commendable. Also, just watching how he hasn't gotten into doing these horrible, horrible attack ads like Mitt Romney's done against Newt Gingrich, and then the volume at which Newt has gone back at Romney... You know, I think Santorum has some presidential qualities, and I'm hoping that if it does come down to it, we'll see a Republican in the White House... and that it's Rick Santorum."
Good thing there was no Megadeth in Obama's Spotify playlist which contains some of what you would expect like Wilco, Bruce Springsteen and Arcade Fire, and at least one "whoah!" aka a fairly small band from Portland who are signed to Knitting Factory Records and that is AgesandAges. Congrats to them! (though of course it should be noted that, to be more specific, the Spotify playlist "features picks by the campaign staff--including a few of President Obama's favorites." Check out the whole thing on Spotify.

As we were saying, the Creators Project takeover of DUMBO went down this past weekend. Here is a second set of pictures from Saturday, now with Justice, Florence & the Machine, and more. They continue below...
The Creators Project will return to New York from October 15 - October 16 by transforming the DUMBO neighborhood of Brooklyn into a colossal two-day arts and technology festival.Except for Karen O at St Ann's, it's all free with RSVP.
After spending the year traveling the world, VICE and Intel's The Creators Project lands back in New York with a marquee lineup of live performances and original Studio works by groundbreaking artists, musicians, designers and filmmakers.
This year's festival will take to the streets of DUMBO, Brooklyn, erecting 30-foot sculptures, showcasing works from over thirty leading international artists, and featuring dozens of live music performances. The event will also include the world premiere of Karen O's psycho-opera, Stop The Virgens, along with film screenings and panels.
Original artworks include Life on Mars Revisited, an immersive short film of David Bowie's classic space-rock anthem from legendary music photographer Mick Rock and filmmaker Barney Clay; 'A Physical Manifestation of Ladies and Gentlemen, We Are Floating in Space,' a cathedral-like physical manifestation of the song created by Spiritualized's J. Spaceman and acclaimed film director Jonathan Glazer; and Origin, a striking thirty by thirty foot audiovisual installation by UVA and composer Scanner, which will be the largest responsive work ever created by the UK based artists.

Florence on GMA @ Rumsey Playfield (juleskills)
Since Good Morning America concerts now happen at Rumsey Playfield aka Central Park Summerstage (full schedule below), Florence & the Machine actually played the outdoor NYC venue twice on Friday (6/24). She played a short set early in the morning for Good Morning America and then a proper Summerstage show later that night with Twin Shadow and Bubbles. At the night show Florence opened the track "Blinding" by singing the intro to Lady Gaga's "Judas" (Lady Gaga notoriously played the first 2011 Good Morning America show on May 27th). Check out a video of that and some others from both Florence shows below.
what is that over her shoulders???
Beyonce, whose new album 4 was released today (6/28), who also just headlined Glastonbury (with help from Tricky), and who plays the NBC NYC fireworks show, plays Good Morning America at Rumsey Playfield on July 1.
Beyonce's new album seems to be what everyone has been talking about, especially since it leaked back on June 7th. Even Beyonce addressed the leak on June 8th:
My music was leaked and while this is not how I wanted to present my new songs, I appreciate the positive response from my fans. When I record music I always think about my fans singing every note and dancing to every beat. I make music to make people happy and I appreciate that everyone has been so anxious to hear my new songs.Indie music critics are loving it, but not everyone is, like NME who said "she's still dangerously in love with boring ballads."
Apparently some of her LGBT fans are disappointed too (and are not dancing to every beat). According to Sandra Rose, after the album leaked, the actual release date was pushed back in part because of criticism from her gay fans. This has not been confirmed, but she wrote:
Beyoncé and her management team are worried about the lack of gay support for her more mature, ballad-heavy CD. "They're taking the album off the [release list] and retooling it," said my source [a confidential informant at the record label, who begged to remain anonymous]. "They're going to add 2 more songs with a club beat to send the gays to the dance floor."Perez Hilton posted around that time that he does "not like the album AT ALL." That said, we don't think they actually added any songs since the leak.
The gay-marriage-legalization-downplaying New York Post, who earlier posted a story about Columbia expecting the Beyonce record to flop, don't like it either. The Daily News's Jim Farber on the other hand likes it (The Daily News also differed from the NY Post by actually doing cover stories on the legalization of gay marriage).
Speaking of Jim Farber, his other big Daily News article today was about "girly men" music ("everyone from [Bon Iver to] Sufjan Stevens to Devendra Banhart to Antony and the Johnsons to Iron and Wine to Grizzly Bear to the National to Fleet Foxes to Vampire Weekend"). He adds, "Snaking back a bit farther, you could also throw into this high-brow/low-virility crew Bright Eyes, the Decemberists and Death Cab for Cutie."
(so just to recap for a second: Gay people don't like the new Beyonce album. The NY Post doesn't like gay people, but does like Beyonce. The Daily News, despite a bit of homophobia, likes gay people and Beyonce.).
I think the Beyonce album's pretty good, except for the severely out-of-place lead single "Run The World (Girls)," which unfortunately is the only track with an official video so far (watch below). Most of the album's non-singles are the ones that demand repeated listens. Its highest points are hit when she belts out Etta Jamesian choruses like that of "Start Over," the earworminess of "Countdown," and the fact that its the first album since her debut to feature a member of Outkast (how bout that new Outkast album?). You can decide for yourself by streaming it. Buy a copy on Amazon.
The upcoming Good Morning America lineup also includes Mary J Blige on September 2, and Debbie Gibson & Tiffany, who are going on tour, on July 29. The full list of mainstream acts (like Beyonce and now Florence) that are playing the popular TV show's series is below.
Florence & Beyonce videos and stuff below too...
