Red Bull

Like last year, Red Bull Sound Select is throwing 30 days of concerts in LA for the entire month of November. Artists playing include TV on the Radio, Grimes, Sylvan Esso, Joey Bada$$, Toro y Moi, Tinashe, Vince Staples, Big Sean, Kaytranada, iLoveMakonnen, Foals, Kiesza, Chromeo and more. Tickets for the whole thing are on sale now.

As you know if you read this site enough, BrooklynVegan is a Red Bull Sound Select partner. We curate/produce RBSS shows and bands in NY and NJ. Opening bands get "curated" into the RBSS program when they get asked to play their first RBSS show. Those bands then also become part of the pool of available opening bands we can "curate" on to future shows. Cakes Da Killa was curated into the program by Afropunk. BrooklynVegan's last show was on 9/4. We had Cakes Da Killa open for Against Me! in Asbury Park. Cakes also opens the next NYC RBSS show (curated by Popgun), and opens for Chromeo as part of 30 Days in LA.

Our last NYC show was with Vince Staples and Loaf Muzik in Brooklyn. Red Bull must have really liked that lineup because they booked it again as part of 30 Days in LA,.

We also had Lil Herb, who now goes by G Herbo, on that show. He's also playing 30 Days in LA, but with Joey Bada$$.

Nicole Dollanganger (photo by Susie Bell)
Nicole Dollanganger

The Grimes show will be opened by Nicole Dollanganger who is the first artist signed to Grimes' new label, Eerie Organization. The label will release her new album Natural Born Losers on October 9 and going by lead single "You're So Cool," if you like Grimes you'll probably dig Nicole too. After hearing a demo of the album, Grimes said: "It blew up my brain so hard that I literally started Eerie to fucking put it out because it's a crime against humanity for this music not to be heard."

Listen to that and check out the full '30 Days In LA' schedule (tickets HERE), below...

Foals Mountain at My Gates video

Foals have shared the video for "Mountain at My Gates" from the forthcoming What Went Down. Made by director Nabil and shot with a GoPro spherical Hero camera, it's an interactive, virtual reality video where the viewer chooses where the camera is pointed. (Kinda like Bjork's "Stonemilker" video.) As you spin the camera around (using A/S/D/W keys) you realize there are a few Foals playing and multiple Yannis Philippakis running around. You can try and keep up with them or, if you choose, just stare up at the sky. Check it out below.

What Went Down is out August 28.

Foals have shared a second song from their forthcoming What Went Down album which is out in August. "Mountain at My Gates" merges the Oxford, UK band's two most prominent sides: big mid-tempo anthems, and dance rock. You can stream it below.

Still no word on a tour. Stay tuned.

Foals premiere What Went Down

Foals' new album, What Went Down, will be out in August and the album's title track (and first single) just premiered on Annie Mac's BBC1 radio show. They're definitely swinging for the fences with this one. Listen to what the Beeb DJ has dubbed "the hottest record in the world" below...

Foals band 2015

Foals will release their fourth album, What Went Down, on August 28 via Warner Brothers. (Their last album was 2013's Holy Fire.) The band recorded the album in the South of France (ooh that sounds nice) in a rural, 19th Century mill, with producer James Ford behind the boards. Says frontman Yannis Philippakis, "I wanted to tap into my inner madman and feel like I was channeling some sort of fevered creature." What will that sound like? You can find out on June 16 when the LP's title track is released as a single. Until then, you can check out a teaser trailer, album art and tracklist, below...

Wild Beasts

Wild Beasts, whose fourth album, Present Tense, came out back in February, have released two new songs which are available to download now. One is "Soft Future," the band's first-ever instrumental, and the second is "Blood Knowledge." Both tracks were specially written to accompany a online interactive GIF novel from Parisian illustrator Mattis Dovier:

Back in September, Wild Beasts got together with Mattis and set out to create something unique for The Jameson Works which responded to the simple brief of 'Storytelling'. The result is a sequence of GIF animations which visualise the stories of two unreleased Wild Beasts tracks, 'Soft Future' and 'Blood Knowledge'. The GIF-Novel tells two alternate stories, the story of a human experiencing a robot's world for Soft Future, and a robot exploring a human's world for Blood Knowledge.
You can check out that here and you can stream both new songs below.

In other news, Wild Beasts just released a special digital edition of Present Tense which contains a CD's worth of remixes from the likes of The Field, Juan Atkins, Factory Floor, SOHN and Foals' take on "Palace" which you can stream below as well.

"There was a certain amount of science to it. An entire week of work experience students left the office thinking that cutting-edge music journalism in 2014 mostly involves calculating which bands have been mentioned most in NME in the past two years, then hunting out references to the bands that influenced those acts online and finally adding up the number of times each influence came up. This gave us a rough list which our editorial team - heads swimming with all of the bands that Wolf Alice (or whoever) have raved on about over 4am ciders - then took to the pub, tore into shreds, fought and shouted about and finally reconstructed in the rundown of 100 you see in the mag today. The Beatles didn't make it. Sorry." [NME[
NME went ahead and listed who they think the 100 most influential musicians and bands are (their latest cover story). Radiohead topped the list. Read the rest with justifications at NME, or just look at their full list below...

Sasquatch Festival 2014 - Day 1
Sasquatch Festival 2014 - Day 1
Sasquatch Festival 2014 - Day 1
Sasquatch Festival 2014 - Day 1

Playing essentially the same set they've begun taking across America, the version with "Hey Ya!" in the middle instead of left for desert, there were no hints of the awkwardness some saw in the hip-hop duo's Coachella performance in April: just urgency. While both men are no doubt happy to collect their headlining cheddar, on Saturday night, their performance was about legacy. They appeared within a cube with black-and-white projections of the American flag, evoking their "Stankonia" cover art, and their banter guided the crowd between songs as the set pivoted from hits to deep cuts, remembering the days they rehearsed rap verses around the kitchen table and crowing over OutKast's eternal coolness before "So Fresh, So Clean." [The Oregonian]
Washington state music festival Sasquatch went down this past weekend (its only weekend) for three days packed with loads of bands. We just posted pictures of Yelle from day 1 (5/23), and we've got way more pictures from the first day in this post, including shots of Outkast, Die Antwoord, Rudimental, Mogwai, Damien Jurado, Phantogram, Foals, Phosphorescent, Chance the Rapper, De La Soul, Eugene Mirman, Rhett Miller (of the Old 97's) and so many more.

White Sea (Morgan Kibby of M83) also played that day and just announced a NYC show.

Foals @ T5, 5/6/2014

In the midst of their North America tour with Cage the Elephant, UK act Foals and J. Roddy Walston & the Business hit NYC on Tuesday night (5/6) for their first of two sold out shows at Terminal 5. Though Foals singer Yannis Philipakis did crowd surf, his wildman moves were kept in check last night -- no jumping from high places. We didn't stick around for the headliners but pictures of Foals and J. Roddy's sets are in this post.

They do it again at tonight (5.7). Pics from J. Roddy's set, and more from Foals, below...

UK music weekly NME has just published its end-of-year issue, with their Top 50 LPs and Tracks of 2013. As for the albums list, we'll let you read on to find out what their #1 pick is, but it might just be the one NME called "absolutely and unarguably the most incredible album of [said band's] career" and "the greatest record of the last decade." It's not Palma Violets, who were last year's Track of the Year, as their debut LP came in at #32 on the list.

As for tracks, their single of the year is a pretty obvious (certainly ubiquitous) choice. Check out the full lists of NME's Top 50 LPs and Tracks below...

#1 LP of 2013 according to 'The Quietus'

Online UK music mag The Quietus started five years ago and quickly became (I think) one of the best sources for music writing on the web, giving a home to many former NME, Select and Q writers who are still seeking new music but are not so interested in the flavor of the month. The Quietus are not staffed by contrarians, nor sheep. To wit: the site just published its Top 100 LPs list of 2013 and topping it is Glynnaestra, the third album from UK duo Grumbling Fur which came out via Thrill Jockey back in August. From The Quietus' write-up:

Grumbling Fur make me want to take drugs. And I don't mean drugs like a few puffs on a spliff before bedtime or on a lazy Saturday afternoon, or a cheeky dabble at a rave to keep the energy flowing - I mean proper, don't-eat-for-18-hours-beforehand, make-sure-you've-got-a-couple-of-good-people-around-you, psychically prepared voyaging, preferably on a warm and sunny but slightly overcast afternoon in a field somewhere in the West Country, or in a friend's house cluttered to the rafters with fascinating and peculiar objects.
The Quietus' Top 10 also includes some records you might have heard (David Bowie, Nick Cave, Foals, Factory Floor) but probably some others you haven't. And if you haven't heard Glynnaestra (I hadn't) you can stream it in full below.

You can check out The Quietus' entire Best LPs of 2013 list in this post, and they also made a Spotify playlist to accompany it. Their list, along with the Grumbling Fur album stream, is below..

Arctic Monkeys

Kind of like MOJO's laddish slightly younger brother who went to college during '90s Britpop, UK monthly Q Magazine has time for new music but still pays attention to older artists as well. Their new issue -- with Robbie Williams on the cover -- doles out its Top 50 Albums of the Year (and other 2013 Q Awards). Topping the list is Arctic Monkeys' fifth album, AM.

Arctic Monkeys will be back in North America in early 2014, playing NYC at Madison Square Garden on February 8 with Deerhunter. Tickets are still available.

Deafheaven at 285 Kent in July (more by Lukas Hodge)

The discerning folks over at Amazon have announced their picks for the best albums, songs and artists of 2013, and Daft Punk's Random Access Memories, Vampire Weekend's Modern Vampires of the City and Chvrches' The Bones of What You Believe filled out the top three spots on their best albums list.

A bit more of a surprise was Deafheaven coming in sixteenth overall with Sunbather and landing "Best Hard Rock & Metal" honors in both the artist and album category--Russian Circles won "Best Hard Rock & Metal" song with "1776", stealing the trifecta that was just within Deafheaven's grasp. Sixteenth-best album of the year and best hard rock and metal album of the year on a huge site like Amazon is pretty high profile for Deafheaven, the San Francisco post-black metal band that still road warriors-up for shows at small clubs. But they've been on the big stage before--to be specific, for Apple's keynote announcement for the iPhone 5c, when the cover of Sunbather graced one of the five iPhones on the projection screen behind the presenter.

Check out the top 20 best albums according to Amazon below, compare that to more old school and indie retailer Rough Trade's list, and head over to Amazon to see what else they thought was a cut above...

Alex Turner doing an ELVIS IMPERSONATION??? (more by Tim Griffin)
Alex Turner

LA radio station KROQ is doing its annual Almost Acoustic Christmas from December 7-8 at LA's Shrine Auditorium. The lineup for day 1 was just announced, and it includes Queens of the Stone Age, Arctic Monkeys, Vampire Weekend, Foals and more. Tickets for day 1 go on sale Friday (11/8) at noon. Full day 1 lineup below.

In related news, Arctic Monkeys, Foals and Vampire Weekend were all among the winners at the 2013 Q Awards. Arctic Monkeys won 'Best Track' for "Do I Wanna Know?" and Foals and Vampire Weekend won for 'Best Live Act' and 'Best Act In The World Today,' respectively.

There was some drama at the ceremony though, as it certainly sounded like Foals took a stab at Arctic Monkeys (via NME). Upon receiving their award, Foals' Yannis Phillippakis said, ""It shows you don't need a backing track, you don't need affectation, you don't need Elvis Presley impersonations." As NME points out, it seems pretty obvious that he was talking about Alex Turner with the Elvis impersonations bit.

Vampire Weekend, Arctic Monkeys, and Foals have all played NYC this year. Queens of the Stone Age are about to, when their tour hits Barclays Center (12/14) with The Kills (tickets).

Meanwhile, Vampire Weekend just had to cancel some European dates.

Full KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas day 1 lineup below...
