Puce Mary at Northside Fest 2013 (photo by Samantha Marble for Pitchfork)
Puce Mary

Last minute Friday night plans alert: Denmark's Puce Mary, a Posh Isolation affiliate noise artist who has plans to play that label's LA fest in May, will play the US much sooner at Brooklyn's Baby's All Right tonight (4/18). Tonight's show is an Ascetic House-presented afterparty (midnight start) for the ongoing New York's Alright festival, and features a genre-appropriate lineup of Ligature (Chris Hansell, of Warthog/Foreplay, ex-The Men), Venerence (Sean Ragon, Cult of Youth) and Nothing Changes alumni Saran Man. There will also be music from DJ Jane Pain (of Foreplay), DJ Pissdrinker (of Hoax), and more TBA in the front room from 10 PM until 4 AM. Tickets for tonight's show are available.

Puce Mary isn't playing one of the New York's Alright main events, which tonight include Inmates, Anasazi, Omegas, Proxy, Warthog, and Mercenary at Le Poisson Rouge (5 PM, tickets); and Zyanose, La Misma, Aspects of War and Life Chain at Acheron (10 PM, no advance tix).

The only other US date we're currently aware of for Puce Mary is Posh Isolation's two day fest in LA with Lust for Youth, Iceage, Sexdrome, Lower and Age Coin. That's going down May 16-May 17. Catch that if you live out in California, where it's never cold, always sunny and the burritos/tacos are sooo much better than anything in NYC. SMDH.

As discussed, Destruction Unit have a gang of dates on the way including Goner Fest and a stop in NYC to bless (damn?) Mercury Lounge on 9/11 with Pharmakon and Ukiah Drag (tickets). The band recently announced a set of shows in the EU, dates of which are listed below.

Meanwhile, members of DU performed at Nothing Changes last night, teaming with Foreplay and Jock Club at Home Sweet Home as Marshstepper. Did you go? How was it?

All tour dates are listed, along with song streams and video, below.

The Julie Ruin, Body/Head @ Saint Vitus, 6/13/2013
Julie Ruin
Body/Head

Pitchfork's first of two Northside showcases happened last night (6/13) and became perhaps the hottest Northside ticket of the week with the late addition of The Julie Ruin (featuring Kathleen Hanna as well as Bikini Kill bassist Kathi Wilcox), to the already hefty headliner of Kim Gordon's Body/Head. The Julie Ruin, who've existed since 2010, just announced their debut album and this was only their second show ever. Also on the bill: a crooning set from Majical Cloudz and industrial noise from Foreplay (mem Warthog, ex-The Men). Pictures from the show are in this post.

Pitchfork returns to Saint Vitus tonight (6/14) to host Lust for Youth, Puce Mary and Loke Rahbek (of LfY), alongside last minute additions Iceage and Lower. Tickets are still available.

More pictures from Saint Vitus, including The Julie Ruin's setlist, are below

DOWNLOAD: The Julie Ruin - "Oh Come On" (MP3)

Julie Ruin

As mentioned, in December 2010 Kathleen Hanna debuted her new band, The Julie Ruin (named after Kathleen's 1997 solo album, Julie Ruin) at the Kathleen Hanna tribute that took place at Knitting Factory Brooklyn. Then, in December 2012, The Julie Ruin revealed their first song, "Girls Like Us," and now they've finally announced that their debut album will come out this year. The album is called Run Fast and it's due out on September 3 via The Julie Ruin's own TJR Records (distributed by Dischord). In addition to Kathleen, the band's lineup includes her Bikini Kill bandmate Kathi Wilcox, Kenny Mellman (of the duo Kiki and Herb with Justin Bond), Carmine Covelli, and Sara Landaeu (who teaches at NYC's Girls Rock Camp). The album artwork is below.

"Girls Like Us" will appear on the album, as will the new single, "Oh Come On." "Oh Come On" hearkens more back to Kathleen's Bikini Kill days than her time in the dance-punk group Le Tigre, which is very welcome considering the excitement behind the recent Bikini Kill reissue and just the general obsession with the '90s that's been going on (PS: you can stream most of Bikini Kill's discography at their bandcamp). Kathleen sounds hungry as ever on the track, screaming through a filter of distortion as her bandmates provide not-distorted girl-group-style backing vocals and a killer guitar riff running through the track. Download "Oh Come On" for free above or stream it below.

The Julie Ruin are set to play their second live show ever (following that Knitting Factory show in 2010) at the Pitchfork showcase at this year's Northside Festival which happens at Saint Vitus on Thursday (6/13). They'll join the previously discussed lineup of Majical Cloudz, Body/Head (aka Kim Gordon and Bill Nace), and Foreplay. That show is sold out, but if you get there early, you can still try to get in with your Northside badge. Updated show flyer below.

"GRIMES SHOWED UP AT MAJICAL CLOUDZ's RELEASE PARTY FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF
FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF" - Max Kerr

Majical Cloudz

Montreal duo Majical Cloudz have been on a tour with Youth Lagoon, which hit the NYC-area twice earlier this month, and this week they took a couple days off from that tour to return to NYC for their own separate events. On Monday (5/20), the guys went to Manhattan record store Other Music for an in-store performance, and that night they met up with their pal Claire Boucher (aka Grimes, who featured Majical Cloudz on her song, "Nightmusic") to hit up a karaoke bar on the LES. While there, Majical Cloudz's Devon Welsh sang Limp Bizkit's "Nookie," though Claire was too shy to sing anything. Devon's bandmate (who doesn't sing in Majical Cloudz) Matt Otto did Backstreet Boys' "I Want It That Way," which apparently is becoming a thing for indie people these days.

Then, the next night (5/21) Majical Cloudz headed to Brooklyn to play a release party for their new album, Impersonator, which was released via Matador that same day. NYC producer Gobby opened that show with a full-band set, and the advertised "SPECIAL GUEST!" turned out to be none other than Grimes doing a DJ set. Pictures from the Glasslands show are in this post.

As mentioned, Majical Cloudz will be back in NYC yet again for the Northside Festival, where they will play a Pitchfork show at Saint Vitus on June 13 with Kim Gordon's Body/Head duo (who recently played RBMA), Foreplay, and a "Special Guest." Grimes again???? Tickets for that show are on sale now, and you can also try to get in with your Northside Badge.

More pictures and some videos from Glasslands below...

All tour dates are listed below

Pharmakon

Pharmakon will release Abandon, Margaret Chardiet's debut effort with Sacred Bones and first long-player overall. Look for it on May 14th via the label, but first check out the new track "Crawling On Bruised Knees" available for streaming below..

Chardiet's noisy, confrontational and abrasive live show is a must see, and you can catch her at a trio of upcoming NYC shows including, most imminently, the previously discussed April 7th date at 285 Kent with Jason Lescalleet and Spencer Yeh Trio (tickets) and at another show at 285 Kent on June 15th with Marshstepper, Body of Light, Lust For Youth and Foreplay as part of the Northside Festival. Ticketing info for that one is on the way, or get in with your Northside Festival badge.

Pharmakon also has one other NYC date, as part of the upcoming Red Bull Music Academy series of events, and it's a whopper:

On May 2, the Red Bull Music Academy will turn the spectacular Knockdown Center into a temple of thundering noise with some of today's most daring sound artists for Drone Activity In Progress. The night will see performances from sixteen solo artists and duos on three stages, where the sound bleed between stages is entirely intentional.
Joining Chardiet will be performances from Stephen O'Malley, KTL (Stephen O'Malley & Peter Rehberg), Body/Head (Kim Gordon & Bill Nace), Prurient, Hunter Hunt-Hendrix of Liturgy, Oren Ambrachi, Alan Licht, Vatican Shadow, Pete Swanson, Mick Barr, Kid Millions/Jim Sauter Duo, Alberich, Noveller, grassmass and Hiram Martinez, and $8 tickets for the show, which is one night after the big "Round Robin Duet" show at Brooklyn Masonic Temple, are on sale and will include shuttle bus service from the Jefferson L train.

All other dates and that stream is below.
