Passion Pit

It's now Saturday and Fun Fun Fun Fest's second day is already underway and streaming on Pitchfork.
Yesterday, Friday, while BBG was holding down the black stage (which Danzig eventually played), Tim (who ran into Ryan Gosling more than once), was handling most of the other music the Austin fest had to offer. A quick selection of Tim's pictures from Friday continues below...
Big Freedia at House of Vans last week (more by Andrew St. Clair)

"In 2006, Franki Chan began a weekly Tuesday party called Check Yo' Ponytail. Teaming with then partners, Love Yourself and White Trash Charms, and with the help of resident DJ, Paparazzi, and visual artist, Demonbabies they went on to make a night that would define the Los Angeles (and in some cases national) music scene for years to come. Initially making its debut at Safari Sam's, it was only a matter of time before the hyper-fun, genre-bending night needed a new home, The Echoplex. The above quote is taken from Check Yo Ponytail's website describing the LA party, which has featured a number of artists in the past including Justice, Boys Noize, Matt & Kim, Diplo, Crystal Castles, Simian Mobile Disco, and others. Check Yo Ponytail are taking their show on the road this fall for their first ever North American tour with Spank Rock, Big Freedia, The Death Set, Pictureplane and Franki Chan on select dates. The tour includes a NYC show on October 29 at Brooklyn Bowl with all five of the aforementioned artists and concludes at Fun Fun Fun Fest with Spank Rock, Big Freedia, Pictureplane, and Franki Chan. Tickets for the NYC show are on sale now. All dates and a tour flier are below. The New Check Yo' Ponytail, as it was then called, continued to book new and eccentric acts that would fill the larger venue to capacity with people looking to dance, drink, and rage. The open-genre, open-format approach to booking shows provided LA with a truly unique audience, breaking down scene walls and allowing for people from all walks to enjoy that which is most important to us, the music.
IHEARTCOMIX, Media Contender, and Paparazzi will be teaming up to resurrect Check Yo' Ponytail, now dubbed CYP2. It will make its return to The Echoplex on varying Tuesday nights each month. CYP2 will remain true to the past, focusing on what's next, while bringing a few tried and true heavyweights every now and again."
You have a few other chances to catch Pictureplane in NYC before the Check Yo Ponytail show including the previously announced shows at Cameo Gallery on September 1 with Autre Ne Veut and DJ Dog Dick, and RockYard (at The Morgan) on September 3 with Wise Blood, White Hills and others TBA (Jelly still has last week's flyer up as of this post). Tickets for the Cameo show are still on sale. More Pictureplane dates are below.
Spank Rock's lats NYC-area was this past Saturday (8/20)... they played Jones Beach with Ke$ha and LMFAO.
All dates and the flier below...

Fake Blood is not Soulwax

I took two nights off after my early start Wednesday night, leaving me eager to hit the B Saturday night for a party that featured a nice mix of deejays that were both familiar and new (to me). I arrived in time to catch the tail end of Van Scott's set which featured a dancey Lykke Li remix, a super-voded mix of Little Boots' "Meddle" (which I later found out was by Treasure Fingers), and lots of other recent tracks.
Franki Chan followed with an excellent mix of some tracks I didn't recognize along with some new favorites including Whomadewho's "TV Friend" (one of the remixes that just came out at the end of last month) and a lovely hybrid version of the Soulwax remix of the Chemical Brothers' "Hey Boy, Hey Girl" that featured the original "super star deejays" vocal sample instead of "2manydj's" but as far as I could tell, retained all the instrumental parts from the Soulwax remix.
Princess Superstar took the evening in a highly dancey meets retro direction, dropping some current stuff mixed with some updated, oldie but goodie classic 90's tracks. Her set segued into Larry Tee's with the pair performing a live version of their hit "Licky" that's had dancefloors freaking out since last winter. Larry's set had everyone getting down and remembering what an innovator the pioneer of electroclash was and continues to be.
The night ended with a bang that unfortunately, hardly anyone was left to see: Nadastrom absolutely killed it. I'm not sure what specifically was great about their set ...it might have been the song selection, excellent mixing, just the right amount of wobbly bass...but one of the most satisfying elements of their set was the enthusiasm the pair maintained as the not too big to begin with, Studio B crowd dwindled down to a few handfuls of people:

One of the best parts of SXSW is all the samplers you get passed. I know there are a million crappy ones, but there are also always the gems in the pile full of great mixes and great songs. This year keep your eyes peeled for Scion Sample 21 mixed by producer and iheartcomix founder Franki Chan. Franki said...:
This is a mixtape I made for SCION. It's for their remix series and will make it's debut during SXSW and WMC. They are making 500,000 copies and it will be available for FREE all across the US all summer long. I've been working on and coordinating this mixtape since August and it features 13 new IHEARTCOMIX tracks, 8 of which are exclusive remixes made just for the mixtape by Radioclit, Flosstradamus, Designer Drugs, Miami Horror, Mano feat Hollywood Holt, Tom Neville, Lies In Disguise and LA Riots and 2 other originals just for the mixtape by Acid Girls and HEARTSREVOLUTION. Those 8 original remixes mentioned above, we'll be sending those out for downloads as well, including an additional LA Riots remix of The Toxic Avenger.I've had it on repeat all morning. The Protokoll track is the winner on the mix, but most of the tracks are killer. If this is the direction that iheartcomix is going for releases, then I am pretty amp'd. Download the mix above (along with some other stuff). Check out the track listing and upcoming IHEARTCOMIX show information (including the flyer for one of the best SXSW parties this year), below.....

hey all, welcome Finger on the Pulse. ANOTHER dance-related new feature on BV. These posts will be in addition to what David Bruno does...
Hello. Welcome to our first 'remixed' post - a place for us to provide you with some of the latest tracks we're listening to, playing out, or....well, we're open to suggestions. We're getting ahead of ourselves though. How about an introduction? We (yes, there are two of us) are 'finger on the pulse' (aka terry diabolik and dj never forget) - throwers of a party at Royal Oak in Williamsburg every 2nd Friday of the month (this week we have the very lovely Ira of CSS guest DJing). Terry spins mainly soul music, and NF plays pretty much everything else. We'll also use this post as a way to let you know about other parties we're playing - like the one at Slipper Room tonight (Jan 10). You'll also find us on MySpace, and via email. Feel free to reach out. Without further ado....

On Monday we're heading out to la to dj Franki Chan's 'still fucking awesome' party, so we decided to ask him what was new with his IHEARTCOMIX label. Ends up, he decided to let us premiere a track off IHEARTCOMIX's first release of the year. The group is called HEARTSREVOLUTION. You may know them as the kids behind the heartschallenger ice cream truck that visits many amazing events (not to be confused with Ice Cream Man).
The song is called "C.Y.O.A" (Choose Your Own Adventure) - off HEARTSREVOLUTION's debut 12" of the same name, and the track we have for you above was remixed by our girl lauren flax whose remixes and skills we've fallen in love with over the last year. Cover art is by the unreal kate moross, and you'll be able to buy it worldwide on March 3rd. Pink vinyl will be available through turntable lab distro, and all online outlets. There will also be remixes by Brodinksi, cfcf, Lazaro Casanova and Dan Oh, so you know this is going to be a must have.
keep going for more MP3s and other stuff....................
