Primitive Weapons

Heavy hardcore locals Primitive Weapons, last seen opening for Refused and at the Bushwick Collective Block Party, are currently on a tour with The Dillinger Escape Plan and Mutoid Man, co-presented by BrooklynVegan. The tour kicked off in DC last night, hits Philly tonight (6/17), Boston on Friday (6/19), and wraps up in NYC on Saturday (6/20) at Irving Plaza.

The band recently put out a video for a new song, "The Electric Drama." The video, directed by Zev Deans, has manipulated black-and-white footage of the band playing Saint Vitus (the venue three members of the band co-own or work at), and the song is a ripper. Check it out below (and look for ex-BrooklynVegan editor Fred Pessaro in the crowd). Their next album, The Future of Death, is due out this fall via PartySmaher Inc. the label/media platform run by Dillinger Escape Plan's Ben Weinman. The record was recorded by Dean Baltulonis (American Nightmare, Hope Conspiracy) at The Wild Arctic Studios in 2014

As Gothamist, Vice themselves and every Vice employee you follow on social media pointed out, Vice President Joe Biden visited the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn today...

During his visit to the company's offices in the neighborhood of Williamsburg, Biden addressed VICE's many journalists, producers, and editors. He discussed the importance of reaching young people and highlighted the role of technology in doing so.

"Thank you for what you do, it's important," Biden said. "You are on the cutting edge of what's happening." [Vice]

Biden's opening line: "I'm a weird guy, I go where the action is."

Fred Pessaro

Ex-BrooklynVegan metal writer Fred Pessaro went to New Orleans to creat a 7-part Noisey Youtube documentary on the "people and culture that helped spawn bands like Down, Eyehategod, Crowbar, Acid Bath and so many others." We mentioned when the first episode was released. They're now up to number four which you can watch with one, two, and three below.

One of those "other" bands featured in the movie is Goatwhore who are playing three shows with the reunited-sort-of Samhain at the end of October (Philly, DC and NYC). Goatwhore also play a bunch of shows before and after then including a pre-Samhain headlining show at the Bug Jar in Rochester (with Mortals and Wolvhammer), and one before that at Cobra Lounge in Chicago (also with Wolvhammer). In November they tour Europe with Dying Fetus, Malevolence, and Fallujah. All dates are listed with those videos below.

Samhain recently played Riot Fest in Chicago (and was joined by Randy Blythe of Lamb of God).

Entertainer Dave Hill is not in the documentary or on tour with Goatwhore, but he did have special guest Phil Anselmo on his first-ever WFMU "Goddamn Dave Hill Show", and he had Mike IX Williams from Eyehategod on the most recent episode. Every episode can be streamed at at WFMU.org. Catch Dave live and in the flesh and telling secrets and playing with his band Valley Lodge and with Mike Doughty (who probably has absolutely no ties to New Orleans metal) and others at Union Hall on Friday (10/3).

My best guess is that you'd probably call Bay Area band Comadre's sound an offshoot of screamo, but that dirty word is far from fitting for a band this adventurous. On their fourth and self-titled effort, due via Vitriol Records in January 2013, the band mixes bits of emotional hardcore with post-punk, Murder City Devils-style punk-n-roll, and all manner of rocking to come up with tracks like "Cold Rain", "Summercide" and the latest to slip out of the gate, "King Worm," which makes its debut here. Order yours via the label and stream it below, along with a few other tracks and live video.

Don't forget, Vitriol's Ghostlimb will play one of the last Precious Metal shows ever on January 7 at Lit Lounge, alongside The Year is One, new addition Old Wounds (who last played NYC with Gaza) and myself, Fred Pessaro, on the wheels of steel.

Streams are below...

Svarttjern at Inferno Festival

Its been quite a ride for me personally and as a photographer in 2012. I've had the distinct honor to cover some of my favorite bands in the world this year, including legends and favorites that vary as widely as Morrissey (HERE), New Order (HERE), Autopsy (HERE and HERE), Godflesh (HERE), Dead Can Dance (HERE), Swans (HERE), Jesus & Mary Chain (HERE), Chain of Strength (HERE) and many many more.

But I'm also very interested in the new, and 2012 afforded me the ability to shoot great younger bands like Terrible Feelings (HERE), Whitehorse (HERE), White Lung (HERE), Milk Music (HERE), Nude Beach (HERE) and loads more. Its been a great year, and though I still have some shooting left in the tank for 2012, here are my favorites as of right now along with brief blurbs on why . We'll start with the above photo....

We at BrooklynVegan are excited to announce the opening of a gallery show called '480 Pixels - An Exhibition of BrooklynVegan's Music Photography,' which will feature work by BV photographers. The gallery opens at 92YTribeca on August 16 and runs through September 6, and is free to the public. For many of these photos, the gallery will be the first time that they have been publicly displayed at a size larger than 480 pixels, the standard width for photos on BV.

On the opening day, there will be a free opening reception at 6:30 PM and a BV-presented show on the 92YTribeca mainstage at 8 PM with Screaming Females, Hunters, and Heliotropes. Tickets for the show are on sale now.

The list of BV photographers whose work will be on display at the exhibition is below. Marissa Paternoster of Screaming Females will also be showing a few pieces of her artwork at the exhibition.

The show is one of many scheduled for Screaming Females, who come to Brooklyn this summer for Riot Fest Brooklyn which goes down at Williamsburg Park on September 8. They also play C.L.I.T. Fest in NJ this weekend. All of their dates are listed below.
