Ab-Soul in Williamsburg Park in 2013 (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Ab-Soul

There's never a lack of great hip hop shows going on in NYC. Here's a roundup of a few of the good ones coming up, plus a handful of new tracks and videos from artists who will be here soon...

NYC rapper Smoke DZA recently made a video for "Hearses" which features Black Hippy's Ab-Soul and appeared on DZA's recent Dream.Zone.Achieve album. Check that out below. Ab-Soul, who put out his own new album recently, will be here this weekend for the 4Knots afterparty at Webster Hall on Saturday (7/12). Tickets for that show are still available.

Ab-Soul's TDE labelmate SZA, who dropped the track "Moodring" earlier this week, is now back with a Jill Scott collaboration, "Divinity," produced by Channel Orange contributor Om'Mas Keith. Jill's powerhouse soul mixed with SZA's airy indie/R&B tendencies works out really well, as you can hear below. SZA plays the AfroPunk-curated RBSS show at Rough Trade this month with Cakes Da Killa and more ($3 with RSVP). And both Cakes and SZA are playing the free AfroPunk Festival in August with D'Angelo, Body Count, Trash Talk and more.

This weekend is also the Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival which includes a show on Saturday (7/12) at 50 Kent with Raekwon, Jay Electronica, CJ Fly, Cyhi The Prynce and more (tickets). Rae just rapped over a remix of Teena Marie's "Ohh La La" yesterday (7/10) for his #TBT series, and you can stream that below. CyHi also just put out a remix of "Good Night" off this year's Hystori: Black History Project mixtape. He brings Scotty ATL, Marian Mereba and Andrew "GC" Fennell along for the remix, which is streaming below.

Speaking of rap shows at 50 Kent, that's where Fool's Gold Day Off happens this year (Labor Day, 9/1) with Danny Brown, French Montana, The LOX and more (tix on sale 7/15). French Montana just put out a new single, "R&B Bitches" featuring Fabolous and Wale which is an unsubtle ode to the female R&B singers they dreamt of sleeping with (Mary J Blige, Miley Cyrus, Ashanti, Kelly Rowland, and Rihanna to name a few). You can stream that one below.

Danny Brown also plays NYC sooner at Peter Rosenberg's birthday party on July 23 at Best Buy Theater with Schoolboy Q and Action Bronson (tickets). Schoolboy Q also plays NYC with The Weeknd and Jhene Aiko on September 19 at Barclays Center. Tickets for that show went on sale earlier today.

Juicy J at Irving Plaza in 2013 (more by Samantha Marble)
Juicy J

The Weeknd's pal Drake will also be in NYC when his tour with Lil Wayne hits Queens' Forest Hills Tennis Stadium on August 19 (tickets). Wayne and Drake's collaborative song "Believe Me" was just revamped by Juicy J who released a version with his own verses that you can stream below. This comes a day after Juicy did the same to Drake's song "0 to 100," which you can also stream below. Juicy's tour hits NYC on July 22 at Terminal 5. Tickets for that show are still available.

Back to this weekend, the Jay Z / Beyonce tour rolls through the NYC-area for shows at MetLife Stadium tonight (7/11) and Saturday (7/12). Tickets for those shows are still available. Jay also plays Global Citizen Fest. Beyonce and Jay Z will also be filming part of their tour for an HBO special, as Billboard reports.

Another rap/R&B double bill hits MetLife Stadium for a 2-night stand in August when Eminem and Rihanna take over the venue (tickets).

For something much smaller, local rap group Ratking play another hometown show on August 4 at SOB's. Tickets are on sale now.

Krayzie Bone

For something more old school at SOB's, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony member Krayzie Bone will celebrate the release of his new album, Chasing The Devil, there on July 22. Tickets are on sale.

For something even more old school, Biz Markie celebrates the 25th anniversary of "Just A Friend" with a live performance and DJ set on September 12 at BB King's. Tickets for that show are on sale now.

Sooner at BB King's, you can catch Fat Joe with Smoove Ski, La Luv and Famous on July 18. Tickets are on sale.

Internet-famous rap group Turquoise Jeep return to NYC on September 18 at Brooklyn Bowl with Oxymorrons and SABA. Tickets for that show are on sale now.

And while we're not sure who will show up, The Soul Rebels play Brooklyn Bowl on August 15 with special guests and a Google search shows Joey Bada$$ was initially announced. Even if it's no longer him, they've collaborated with other rappers including Slick Rick, members of Mobb Depp, The Lox and more, so it should be interesting. Tickets are on sale.

There's plenty of other upcoming hip hop shows in NYC too, including Deltron 3030, Hieroglyphics, De La Soul, and still more. What else?

All streams and videos below...

Action Bronson at Irving Plaza in January (more by Dylan Johnson)
Action Bronson

Queens MC Action Bronson is currently wrapping up a tour that just had him playing two nights at Irving Plaza (night 1 pics, night 2 pics), and he's since added another show in his home city happening on March 26 at Best Buy Theater as part of Hot 97's Metro PCS Takeover. It's a co-headlining show with The Lox (aka Sheek Louch, Styles P, and Jadakiss), who just came out of release-hibernation with their "surprise" EP The Trinity which came out in late December (same month as "surprise" releases from Beyonce, Angel Haze and Burial). (We also just caught The Lox at a surprise show in Chinatown in January. So many surprises!) Also on the bill is French Montana and Funk Flex, and tickets for the show go on sale Friday (2/7) at noon.

It won't be the first time Action Bronson and The Lox team up this year. Both were just on an episode of MTV RapFix Live, which you can watch, along with the list of all Action Bronson dates (Sasquatch included), below...

Curren$y at SXSW 2012 (more by Ryan Muir)
Curren$y

New Orleans rapper Curren$y always seems to be up to something. He released a live EP with Wiz Khalifa earlier this year, and more recently released a free EP with Smoke DZA (prod. Harry Fraud) that features Big K.R.I.T. and French Montana on one track, and can be streamed below. He's also been talking about teaming back up with Ski Beatz for Pilot Talk III.

Curren$y just kicked off a short December tour in Austin last night (12/11), which hits Dallas for a Red Bull Sound Select show tonight (12/12), and comes to NYC for a show on December 21 at BB King's, where also played in May. Tickets for that show are on sale now. All dates are listed below.

Speaking of Smoke DZA, he also has an upcoming show in his hometown of NYC happening on December 18 at SOB's for the Hot 97 holiday party with A$AP associate Bodega Bamz, thrilling Brooklyn rhymer Troy Ave, and more. Tickets for that show are on sale now.

All Curren$y dates are listed, along with that EP stream, below...

Summer Jam 2013 (via @evecastillo2012)
Summer Jam

Hot 97 Summer Jam went down at MetLife Stadium last night (6/2) with sets from Kendrick Lamar (joined by other Black Hippy members), A$AP Rocky (joined by Kendrick and 2 Chainz on "Fuckin' Problems," and also by Bone Thugs-N-Harmony), Miguel (joined by Mariah Carey), Wu-Tang Clan, Fabolous (joined by Lil Kim), 2 Chainz (joined by Nicki Minaj which is a big deal for anyone invested in the controversy surrounding her canceling her set at last year's Summer Jam), and more.

Unfortunately for those in attendance, the festival was cut short during headliner French Montana's set due to "flash flood and lightning warnings." You can learn more about that at Hot 97's site.

Some videos from the festival below...

Daft Punk

Daft Punk are back, as you know because you don't live in a cave with no internet or cell service, but now it's officially in a big way. The duo's new album, Random Access Memories, debuted at #1 on the Billboard Album Chart, selling 339,000 copies their first week. The single, "Get Lucky," is currently at #10 on the Hot 100.

The National's Trouble Will Find Me did pretty well its debut week two, enough for it to hit #3 with 75,000 copies. Sandwiched in between is former Hootie & the Blowfish singer Darius Rucker whose new solo album, True Believers, sold 83,000 copies putting it at #2. The #4 and #5 slots are held by rapper French Montana's Excuse My French and The Great Gatsby soundtrack.

Last week's #1, Vampire Weekend's Modern Vampires of the City, fell to #7.

Still no word on Daft Punk touring plans. What gives?

Kendrick Lamar at Roseland in February (more by Dylan Johnson)
Kendrick Lamar

We recently posted that the Hot 97 Summer Jam "Festival Village" lineup (aka the side stage in the parking lot), which features Action Bronson, Joey Bada$$, A$AP Ferg, Smoke DZA, Bodega Bamz, Troy Ave, and more. And now the main stage lineup, which goes down inside of MetLife Stadium on June 2 has been announced, and that one's looking pretty good too. It's got Kendrick Lamar and A$AP Rocky, who both quickly graduated from the side stage that they played last year (but for obvious reasons), in addition to Miguel, Wu-Tang Clan, Fabolous, Wale, 2 Chainz, Joe Budden, French Montana, and, sigh, Chris Brown. Tickets for the whole festival (main stage and "Festival Village" included) are still available. Hopefully no headliners drop off this year.

This show is one of a few that Kendrick Lamar is doing in the NYC-area this year, including his Downtown Music Festival show at Capitale on May 10 with the rest of the Black Hippy crew (Schoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, and Jay Rock) joining him, plus support from Fat Tony. Tickets for that one are still available. Then he plays NYC festival Governors Ball on June 8.

Miguel was originally on Governors Ball too, but dropped off. He, Kendrick, 2 Chainz and A$AP Rocky will also be festival-mates later this year at Jay-Z's Philly festival, Made In America in August, which also includes Beyonce, Queens of the Stone Age, Nine Inch Nails, Phoenix, Solange, and others. Tickets for that festival are still available.

Meanwhile, A$AP Rocky has many other tour dates too, including NYC-area dates on May 4 and 5 at Barclays Center with Rihanna (both sold out), and on August 2 at PNC Bank Arts Center, August 6 at Jones Beach, and August 8 at Comcast Theatre with Wiz Khalifa, Joey Bada$$, Rockie Fresh, Smoke DZA, and others. Tickets for those shows are still available.

Videos of Kendrick and Rocky on last year's Summer Jam parking lot stage below...

Cassie

Though the attention being paid to futuristic R&B has been more prevalent than ever in the past two years, it's also been interesting to look back on the ways the sound did exist in years prior. And even more exciting to see some of those artists making comebacks. Miguel's Kaleidoscope Dream was one of last year's better albums, but I'd be lying if I said it didn't tempt me to dust off my copy of FutureSex/LoveSounds. And only a few months after doing that? Boom: The 20/20 Experience. Another thing I went back to last year was Cassie's only album -- her 2006 self titled debut -- specifically it's opening track/huge hit, "Me & U." The thick bass and airy vocals of that track are way more similar to the post-Weeknd world of R&B than I remembered, and it more than holds up.

Cassie had been dropping some singles here and there since her '06 album, but almost seven years later, there was still no sign of another full length release. However, like JT did in March, Cassie ended her lengthy absence last week with the release of her free mixtape, RockaByeBaby. It might be "just a mixtape" (whatever that really means at this point anyway), but RockaByeBaby serves as a worthy followup to Cassie, and as a whole release, it might even be better. The album is stacked with guest appearances (Jeremih, Pusha T, Fabolous, Meek Mill, Too $hort, and others) and the producers are no slackers here either (Mike Will Made It, Young Chop, and more), but it's not over-saturated with guests. Even the verses from some of the weaker rappers (Wiz Khalifa) work pretty well here. And some of the samples used are noticeably big songs (Kendrick Lamar's "m.A.A.d City," Tyga's "Do My Dance"), which can be a turnoff, but she uses them well.

Overall, the thing really feels like an album. Too often with mixtapes I find myself filtering through 20-something songs for the 10 good ones, but RockaByeBaby has no fat to trim. Its 13 tracks (12, not including the intro) clock in at 37 minutes, and they're all strong. The collaboration with Jeremih, "Sound of Love," is an early standout, with both singers bouncing off of each other really nicely. A little surprisingly, Fabolous' guest verse on "I Love It" is actually one of the most memorable moments of the album. And the chorus of "Paradise" (with its "pair of dice" pun) is one you'll find yourself humming after the album ends.

Download RockaByeBaby for free over at DatPiff and stream it in its entirety below...

Earl Sweatshirt
Earl Sweatshirt

Odd Future member Earl Sweatshirt will be making his SXSW debut this year (he wasn't there when the rest of his crew first played), and will be doing collaborative sets with Captain Murphy, aka Flying Lotus' rap alter ego (who collaborated with him on "Between Friends"). Those sets include the Life or Death showcase on Wednesday (3/13) at Scoot Inn at midnight, the Green Label Sound showcase on Friday (3/15) at Lucille at 9:30 PM, and FADER Fort on Saturday (3/16) at 6 PM. Flyers for all three of those shows with full lineups are below.

Earl just appeared at Flying Lotus' LA show at Low End Theory last week (3/7) and they performed three tracks off Earl's upcoming album, Doris, "Burgundy" (produced by Pharrell), "Hive," and "Guild." Mac Miller is featured on that last one and he was at the LA show too. You can check it all out in a video from the show, which is below. Also below is the video for previously released Doris track, "Chum," and Earl has another new video on the way too.

Earl's other upcoming dates include some festival appearances like Bonnaroo, Sasquatch!, and Coachella. All dates are listed, along with those flyers and videos, below...

Purity Ring at Pop Montreal 2012 (more by Dominick Mastrangelo)
Purity Ring

Purity Ring's debut album Shrines has been a mainstay on Best of 2012 lists, from NME and SPIN to personal lists from Freelance Whales and Bowery Presents' Josh Moore. They also had some of the more visually-striking shows of the year and were the #5 Most Blogged About Artist of 2012 according to the Hype Machine, which we're continuing to fuel with this post. Purity Ring sold out the initial NYC date of their upcoming 2013 tour, so a second Webster Hall show was added (1/12, tickets still available). They've had a big year.

But what did Purity Ring like this year? Corin Roddick, one half of the Montreal duo, gave us his unranked list of favorite songs of 2012. Did "Call Me Maybe" make the cut? Check out his list below.

Drake at Jones Beach - 6/16/12 (via Draii Rynell)
Drake

Drake brought his tour with J. Cole, 2 Chainz, Waka Flocka, Meek Mill and French Montana to the NYC area last week for shows at PNC Bank Arts Center (6/12) and Jones Beach (6/16) (and Saratoga, NY show in between - hope you didn't try to get in with your fake ID). The openers on that tour were all in the NYC area earlier this month for Summer Jam, where Drake's Young Money labelmate Nicki Minaj cancelled her headlining performance.

In between the PNC Bank Arts Center and Jones Beach shows, Drake stopped by NYC club W.i.P. at Greenhouse on Wednesday (6/13), where he allegedly got in a fight with Chris Brown over Rihanna, who both singers/rappers have dated. TMZ reports that bottles were thrown, at least 5 people were injured, and the club was left severely damaged. When the NYPD arrived, Chris and Drake had both already left the scene. You may have noticed cover stories the other day on papers like the NY Post. New "victims" are still coming forward (ready to sue).

Meek Mill, who was on tour with Drake, was there too and spoke to XXL about the incident. He said, "Things just happen in the club. I seen girls in there throwing bottles, all types of shit. All types of people. I never seen Chris Brown or Drake throw a bottle and I was there." And when asked if he himself threw a bottle, he responded, "Fuck no."

Game was not there for the fight, but he has collaborated with both Drake and Chris Brown on his 2011 album, The R.E.D. Album, and commented on the fight in an interview with BET:

"That's not a cool beef. They both can stop it now and go about they way, go they separate ways and get they money," he said, adding "If them niggas is rappers, I'm encouraging that shit. But if one of those niggas is an R&B nigga, then y'all need to cut that out. We need some songs to fuck to."
NY Post reports that Drake's reps are insisting he did nothing wrong and Drake is refusing to speak to the NYPD. Wall Street Journal also now reports that the club has been shut down by the police.

Meanwhile, at Drake's Jones Beach show on Saturday (6/16), he brought out a number of guests including a Dipset reunion, The Weeknd, A$AP Rocky, Busta Rhymes, and more. Regarding the Dipset reunion, FADER writes, "The evening's biggest surprise was a four-song Dipset reunion, with Jim Jones, Juelz Santana and Cam'ron emerging one track at a time to join forces on "' Really Mean It' and 'Salute.'" Check out videos of Drake and his guests below.

Azealia Banks at Coachella 2012 (more by David Andrako)
Azealia Banks

Azealia Banks, who recently canceled a bunch of summer shows due to "recording commitments," has now added more shows to her summer schedule. Most of those are in Europe, but she was just added to the Hot 97 Summer Jam lineup which goes down in East Rutherford, NJ at MetLife Stadium on June 3. The rest of the lineup includes Nicki MInaj, Rick Ross, 2 Chainz, Waka Flocka Flame, Young Jeezy, J. Cole, Wale, and more. Tickets for the fest are available. The full lineup is listed below.

UPDATE: She actually plays the Summer Jam pre-show in the parking lot with the even more impressive lineup of Pusha T, Big K.R.I.T., A$AP Rocky, Schoolboy Q, Kendrick Lamar, and Fred the Godson. Your Summer Jam ticket gets you into the pre-show.

In addition to her fickle live schedule, Azealia Banks continues to move around her schedule of releases as well. As of right now, she's planning to get her delayed 1991 EP out on May 29 digitally and June 12 physically via Interscope. The cover art for that EP is below. She'll follow it with the Fantastic mixtape, which is due out on July 4, and includes her recently dropped track, "Jumanji," which was produced by Hudson Mohawke and Nick Hook. Grab that track above or stream it below. Finally, her debut full length, Broke With Expensive Taste, which is presumably the album she's been working on with Paul Epworth, is due out in September.

In other news, fresh off her feud with Iggy Azalea (who plays SOBs TONIGHT [5/17]), she's taken a stab at Lil Kim, who refused to collaborate with Azealia because Lil Kim wanted to write her own verse. Azealia had written it for her and insisted, "Everybody knows Lil Kim doesn't write her own raps." We already know that Kim's got beef with Nicki Minaj. Azealia, however, seems down with Nicki and would possibly collaborate with her, but thinks she should ditch the "ugly wigs and ugly costumes." Maybe they'll meet up when they both play Summer Jam next month. On the other hand, Azealia Banks has collaborated with Missy Elliot and Rye Rye on a remix of M.I.A.'s "Bad Girls." Look for that soon.

A list of all dates, Hot 97 Summer Jam lineup, 1991 cover art, and the "Jumanji" stream are below...

Drake at Tammany Hall in 2010 (more by Brook Bobbins)
Drake

Earlier this month, Drake wrapped up a tour with Kendrick Lamar and A$AP Rocky, before the latter two made their way to Austin for SXSW.

That tour didn't hit the NYC area but Drake has since announced another slew of North American dates which include PNC Bank Arts Center on June 12 in Holmdel, NJ and Nikon at Jones Beach Theater on June 16 in Wantagh, NY. Like the Kendrick/A$AP tour, most of the new dates, including both NYC area shows, are with a list of on-their-way-to-being-huge rappers: J. Cole, 2 Chainz (who last played NYC when he sold out SOBs in January), Waka Flocka Flame, Meek Mill, and French Montana. Tickets for the PNC Bank Arts Center show and the Jones Beach show are on sale now.

All dates and the video for "Headlines" below...

Pictures from the BV party are on the way, but we have a set of pictures in this post from the show Talib Kweli played at the Mohawk one night earlier (yes he was in Texas playing a show after midnight the night before he headlined our show at 5pm in Brooklyn!).

Tickets are on sale for all dates.

Inspektah Deck will also HEADLINE his own show at 285 Kent on 11/4, joining Ava Luna, DJ Dog Dick, and a DJ set from WFMU'S Marty McSorley. Tickets are on sale. The show is meant to wave goodbye to Babycastles, a collective of independent gaming designers that built an arcade inside Silent Barn.

In other "hip hop at Best Buy Theater" news, Jadakiss, Lloyd Banks, Juelz Santana, Fabolous, Meek Mills, French Montana, and Red Cafe will team for a Funkmaster Flex Presents event at the venue on 11/24. Tickets are on sale.

J Cole plays there tonight (10/25).

Talib Kweli's show Friday night at the Mohawk in Austin, TX was with G-Eazy and Franchize. More pictures from that 10/21 performance, and Wu Tang dates, below...
