Berlin Festival

The big festival season may be coming to a close now that Labor Day is behind us and it doesn't really feel like summer anymore, but of course that doesn't mean there aren't any to still look forward to (though many are in warmer places than here in the Northeast).

One festival that will take an airplane ticket and a passport to get to from the US, but has a lineup that might make it worth it, is the Berlin Festival in -- you guessed it -- Berlin. It goes down this weekend from September 6-7 and includes Blur, Bjork, Pet Shop Boys, My Bloody Valentine, Klaxons, Savages, Justice (DJ), John Talabot (live), and more. Tickets for the festival are on sale now. Full schedule here.

In October, Austin gets the previously discussed Austin City Limits Festival for two weekends (10/4-6 & 10/11-13) with Depeche Mode, The Cure, Atoms for Peace, Phoenix, Wilco, Vampire Weekend, The National, passion Pit, Queens of The Stone Age, Arctic Monkeys, Kendrick Lamar, Franz Ferdinand and more. Weekend passes for weekend 2 and VIP options for both weekends are still available. Check out the schedule here. If you'll be in Austin for the festival, don't forget to catch some of the official late shows too.

Later on in the year, Austin gets the previously discussed Fun Fun Fun Fest (Nov. 8-10) which includes Descendents, Quicksand, Television, Deerhunter, MGMT, M.I.A., Snoop Dogg, Cut Copy, The Walkmen, Kurt Vile, Body Count, Cloud Nothings, Title FIght, White Lung and more. Tickets are still available. Check out the full lineup.

Around that same time, New Orleans hosts the previously mentioned Voodoo Experience festival (11/1-3) with Pearl Jam, Nine Inch Nails, The Cure, The Gaslight Anthem, Desaparecidos, Cults, Rudimental and more. Tickets are still available. Check out the full schedule.

Though it's not quite a "festival," NYC will be bombarded by a whole slew of bands this fall when a big portion of the music industry heads our way for the 2013 CMJ Music Marathon, which runs from October 15-19. Confirmed artists include The Dismemberment Plan, Pelican, Jacco Gardner, Good Riddance, Godflesh, Eagulls, Courtney Barnett, The Long Winters, Savages, Yamantaka // Sonic Titan, Eleanor Friedberger, Kevin Drew, Obits, Fuck Buttons, Quadron, Speedy Ortiz, Lawrence Rothman and more. Badges are on sale now.

Right before CMJ, NYC will be getting the 2013 CBGB Music & Film Festival which goes from October 9 to 13 across various venues and includes Andy Shernoff, Arto Lindsay, Bass Drum of Death, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr., Ginger Baker, Hanni El Khatib, Meat Puppets, Obits, The Spits, Tommy Ramone, and more. Badges are still available.

And right as CMJ is ending in NYC, San Francisco will be getting its two-day Treasure Island Music Festival (10/19-20). That festival includes Atoms for Peace, Beck, Animal Collective, James Blake, Japandroids, Disclosure, Tricky, Little Dragon, and more. Tickets are still available. Check out the full schedule.

Holy smokes dudes. Lookit, I don't really go for the whole 'festival' scene, nor do I have the scratch or the resources to get my ass on a plane to go to some far off place and put myself up in a hotel in order to endure a few days of music and drunk idiots and awful tattoos and dudes in short-shorts prancing around like the world around them isn't basically in the worst shape it has ever been and stuff. And I am too old to do the old bro-out road trip, share a hotel room with eight dudes nonsense. However, two upcoming events in Elsewhere, USA are forcing me to consider eBaying everything I own in order to personally witness their majesty. The first event, which I've already mentioned, is Festival Supreme which is taking place on the Santa Monica Pier on Saturday October 19. Top to bottom, this show boasts the best line-up of entertainment I have ever seen including performances by Tenacious D, Zach Galifianakis, The Mr. Show Experience, Reggie Watts, Tig Notaro, Eric Idle, Tim & Eric, Sarah Silverman, and scores more of top shelf greatness. If ever there was a show worth the price of admission, a plane ticket, and a hotel room somewhere this is it.

Less than a month after that, the incredibly curated Fun Fun Fun Fest 2013 has to go ahead and add a comedy line-up to their already powerhouse festival. If you're at the fest, which happens in Austin Texas from November 8 - 10, prepare yourself, for their comedy line-up includes the impossibly great Tenacious D, Patton Oswalt, Craig Robinson, Doug Benson, Rob Delaney, The Eric Andre Show Live(!), Kyle Kinane, Jonah Ray, and tons tons tons more. The fact that, in a single festival, I can see Slayer, Quicksand, The Descendents, Judge, Subhumans, and the Cro-Mags as well as all this great comedy is basically my most wonderfully imaginative dream come true. Tickets are currently on sale and I urge you to get on it tout de suite, sunshine.

But hey, if you're a New Yorker like me and dreams of travel to exotic US locations for comedy/music festivals are just that, a dream, have no fear. For as we mentioned yesterday The Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival will return for it's 6th year with shows at The Bell House and Union Hall from September 26 - 29 that are sure to be so good you're gonna want to have a clean pair of underwear handy. This year's festival is bursting at the seams with comedy, maybe some music, and definitely more. Klaus favorites including Kristen Schaal, Jim Gaffigan, Ira Glass, Wyatt Cenac, Jon Benjamin, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Michael Che, Kurt Braunohler, and Leo Allen are all scheduled to perform in one way or another. In addition to that, the ALWAYS SOLD OUT StarTalk Live! with Neil deGrasse Tyson and Eugene Mirman will be back this year, as well as tons of smaller shows featuring newer talent and comedians who are sure to be sucked into the vacuum that is Los Angeles sooner or later. And you know your man Klaus is stoked for the return of Invite Them Up, Hot Tub with Kurt and Kristen, and that super dope Bob's Burgers Season 4 Celebration. It's going to be a great festival loaded with the shows and comedians that made me fall in love with the NYC comedy scene in the first place.

For some of you today is probably payday so get those sweet bunz of yours onto TicketFly and start buying those tickets!

A$AP Rocky @ Fun Fun Fun Fest - 11/03/2012
A$AP Rocky @ Fun Fun Fun Fest - 11/03/2012

If A$AP Rocky has anything going for him besides a few internet rap hits and some memorable moments dropping in on his friends' shows, it's that he's already got some pretty far out stories to tell. He recently revealed an interview with Hard Knock TV that he smoked weed with Daft Punk on his tour bus (hopefully in Colorado). Now he just needs to get them to play at his house!

He also declared himself a factor in evolving society's views on homosexuality. "I kicked down the door for kids that's my age, older and younger, to be able to wear Jeremy Scott sneakers, rips in their jeans and not feel gay," Rocky says. Because of him, kids can wear whatever they want and not have to worry about being mistaken for being gay. Yeah, that doesn't sound homophobic at all (it's a start though) (watch the whole thing in the video below - he means well).

He's also taken his fashion to another level, and now has his own limited edition T-shirt line. You can purchase one while supplies last at Karma Loop.

In 2013, he'll be able to add another epic story to his resumé, when he heads out on tour with Rihanna. That tour comes to NYC for the previously discussed show at Barclays Center on May 4, which is sold out, and also hits the same venue one day later (5/5), which tickets are on sale for now. Hopefully Rocky will have his new album, LongLiveA$AP, out by then which he has kept delaying. He's now hoping to get it out during the first quarter of 2013.

As mentioned, you can also catch A$AP Mob with A-Trak at Best Buy Theater on November 29 and A$AP Twelvy at Highline Ballroom on November 22.

A$AP Rocky also just played Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin this past weekend (as did Run DMC). You can check out more pictures from his set (like the one above), the video of that Hard Knock TV interview, and a list of all upcoming tour dates, below....

DOWNLOAD: Paul Banks - The Base (MP3)

Paul Banks

After a couple releases under the guise of Julian Plenti, Interpol frontman Paul Banks will release his first record under his own name on October 23 via Matador. You can download Banks opening track, "The Base," at the top of this post. While still from the same gloomy mold as Interpol, there's a sweeping orchestral/electro sheen to this that suits Banks well.

While no tour has been set up, Paul will play L.A.'s FYF Fest in September and Austin's FFF Fest in October. You can check out the LP artwork and tracklist below.

Icona Pop at Glasslands, June 2012

Swedish dance duo Icona Pop will return to NYC for a show at Santos on September 12. Tickets are on sale now. The band's only other North American dates are Chicago on August 30 and Austin's Fun Fun Fun Fest in November. All Icona Pop tour dates are listed below.

Icona Pop's recent Charli XCX-penned single "I Love It" may still be stuck in your brain like a Centaurian slug. (The video's below.) The band played Glasslands last month and I thought they were pretty good for basically being two people onstage singing to backing tracks with occasional knob-twiddling. There was definitely no lack of energy on stage, with much dancing and fist-pumping. Video of them performing "I Love It" there is below.

Alexandra Lawn @ Fun Fun Fun Fest 2011
Ra Ra Riot

Oh no!

While this is not a 'goodbye', the time has come for me to leave Ra Ra Riot.

Thank you for the wonderful 6 years-- so many beautiful places visited, with incredible fans & close friends made along the way. I will carry on what I have learned from each and every one of you in future endeavors, whether it be music, becoming a pilot, or the next Iron Chef.

Playing music with Rebecca, Milo, Wes, Mathieu, John, Kenny, Gabriel, and Cameron has provided some very special opportunities in my life, alongside all the talented and amazing bands that have shared the stage with us throughout. I have learned so much from all of you, and most importantly, you have have taught me to strive every day to be a better musician and songwriter.

much love,

Alexandra Lawn

Countdown to news of a solo record?

The pictures in this post are previousy unposted pictures from Fun Fun Fun Fest 2011 which took place in Austin in November not long before the band played Metro in Chicago (pics at the link). Chicago was the fourth-to-last date of the band's November tour. They've maybe played a few shows since then, but not many. More (of these pictures from one of Ali's last shows with the band) below...

G-Side @ Fun Fun Fun Fest
G-Side

Huntsville, Alabama rap duo G-Side are on a tour that brings them to their BV-presented show at Glasslands TONIGHT (12/6) with Mr. Muthafuckin eXquire (who the Village Voice just interviewed) and Cities Aviv. (Facebook invite HERE.) Tickets are still available and we're also giving away a pair here. Details on how to win are below.

Earlier on in G-Side's tour, they played Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin. More pictures from their set there, where they came out into the photo pit to be closer to the crowd toward the end, are in this post. The five people you see on stage include the duo, their two much-more-than-backup singers and the DJ. The crowd started relatively small for their daytime set, but grew large by the end due to their undeniable talent and charisma. Read more about another recent show they played HERE.

SPIN profiled G-Side for their December 2011 issue, 'The Changing Face of Hip-Hop.' They talked about the town of Huntsville, Alabama, where NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center is located, and how G-Side rides "past the rocket to test records out." That rocket is the "363-foot-tall white Saturn V" off the highway, I-565. They talked about the tightly knit scene there. G-Side's manager Codie G. said, "In a city like this, all you get is small wins, If I see somebody here get some success, I feel like that's my success." Then the members of G-Side discussed their difficult childhoods and how they eventually met up in their pre-teenage years and began making music together. According to Yung Clova, their new album Island (which is streaming on bandcamp) "might be the last album," Either this album is gonna make us or it ain't. Struggling, trying to pay your rent -- it gets old," he said. Come support at Glasslands tonight or at one of their other upcoming shows.

All tour dates, more pics from FFF Fest, and contest details below...

Hum @ Fun Fun Fun Fest
Hum at Fun Fun Fun Fest 6 - 11/06/2011

I can say without any reservations that this was a moment I had thought about for nearly 15 years. HUM was a band that I worshiped from my mid teenage years until well into my twenties. Their two major label records, You'd Prefer An Astronaut and Downward is Heavenward, I clutched tightly against my chest and listened to on repeat in the closed world of my angst-fueled bedroom. Next to ninja turtles bed sheets, posters of Nirvana and Issac Asimov novels, were cassette and CD copies of both albums. I can still remember hearing when I was 13 or 14 that HUM would be playing a small festival show at Worlds of Fun with my other favorite band of the time, Kill Creek. I've been beating myself up for missing that show for over a decade. -[Demencha]
The above review comes from the Kansas City reunion appearance of Hum, which went down a month after they played the AV Fest in Chicago and right before their Fun Fun Fun fest showing. We only posted one picture from their Austin show. This post attempts to remedy that situation.

If you missed them (possibly because you live in the East Coast), we also have a consolation prize in the form of a live recording via Cavis Tapes who recorded the whole Fun Fun Fun Fest set and posted it as a free download, Grab that before the link expires.

You can also get your Hum fix via a tribute LP which was recently released via Pop Up Records. The record features contributions from names like The Esoteric, Constants, Junius, City of Ships, and many others.

So far Hum has not announced any more shows. More of those belated Hum pictures from Fun Fun Fun Fest are below...

Austra - FunFunFun Fest 6 - Austin - 11/06/2011

Austra just finished a tour that stopped by Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin last month. Pictures from their set are HERE and HERE and HERE, and we've got another set in this post.

Their excellent debut LP, Feel It Break, which came out this past May on Domino, was reissued as a deluxe edition by the label last week (11/29). The deluxe edition comes with a bonus disc which features the b-sides "Identity," "Young and Gay," and "Energy," which have appeared as b-sides to the band's singles and have been appeared in many of their live sets. It also includes a few unreleased b-sides, a remix of "Beat and the Pulse" by Clown of Slipknot (whose bandmate is coincedentally playing Highline Ballroom tonight) (why are we talking about Slipknot???), which can you can stream below, and covers of Joni Mitchell's "Woodstock" and a recently recorded cover of Roy Orbison's "Crying," which you can also stream below. The album is available now at the Domino webstore.

Austra also recently filmed a live acoustic version of "Believe Me," which appears on disc 2 of the album, for Paper Bag, their Canadian label. That video, more FFF pics, the album's tracklist, and song stream is below...

Hot Snakes (and guest) @ Fun Fun Fun Fest
Hot Snakles

Hot Snakes made their overdue return to the stage at Fun Fun Fun Fest last month. If you took a look at the pictures we posted, you may have noticed that it was their original drummer Jason Kourkounis behind the kit. However, as you can see in the picture above (and few more new ones below), their second drummer Mario Rubalcaba got in on the action too.

For those not familiar with Mario's good looks, note that he is NOT the one wearing the red shirt that is banging on the top of the bass drum. No silly, that was in fact a THIRD drummer that played with the reunited band at the Austin Festival. Who was she? Nobody knew, not even the band who made an announcement that if anyone was missing a little girl, she was safe (minus her lack of earplugs) with them on stage. Like the Hot Snakes, she was a hit (also running back and forth across the stage and dancing earlier in their set).

How many drummers will there be at the Bell House tonight?? We'll find out tomorrow, after the Hot Snakes play their first of two super-sold-out NYC-area shows which are their only non-Austin North American dates. They also tour Europe this month. All dates and more Fun Fun Fun Fest pictures below...

Big Freedia

Shake away that t(of)urkey and stuffing on the Saturday after Thanksgiving at Public Assembly (11/26) when bounce queen Big Freedia returns to Brooklyn. The $12 show will also feature appearances from Freedia's DJ Rusty Lazer, Phi Unit, and Lil Ray along with Freedia's cavalcade of rotund posterior dancers.

The NYC show is one of a handful of dates that Ryan Gosling's good friend Freedia has scheduled right now. The full list is below.

If YOU think you've got what it takes to be a Big Freedia dancer, then here's your chance:

Are we playing in your town soon? Would you like to arrange a bounce dance class before the show to learn how to shake!? Contact Miss Altercation through either booking agent: www.etbagency.com or bojan@windishagency.com
With that offer, there better be some experts in the house on 11/26.

We last caught Freedia at Fun Fun Fun Fest (where Freedia met Gosling) and here are some more pictures from her set (which was maybe a PG-13) along with a retrospective video from the fest which includes her majesty in action. It's all with the dates below...

Cloud Nothings @ Fun Fun Fun Fest
Cloud Nothings

After a stop in Austin for Fun Fun Fun Fest (new pictures in this post), Cloud Nothings toured to Brooklyn to play a show at Glasslands last weekend (11/12). How was that show? If you missed it, the band will be back soon. Catch them on January 26th at The Studio at Webster Hall with Reading Rainbow and more TBA. Tickets go on sale at 10:20AM on 11/19.

That's a one-off show, but the band will head out on a big tour soon too. That tour runs from February through the first week of April and alternates between A Classic Education and Mr. Dream as support. There's no NYC date announced as part of that yet, but we wouldn't be surprised if at least one gets announced shortly after that 1/26 date (one at Mercury Lounge maybe even). All confirmed dates are listed below.

Cloud Nothings recently released a video teaser and a new track from their forthcoming LP Attack On Memory. Check out the slow burner "No Future/No Past" from the Albini-produced effort below, and look for the LP via Car Park on January 24th (two days before the next NYC show). Car Park is also the label that is releasing a free Cloud Nothings Christmas song in December.

The new song, all tour dates, and more Fun Fun Fun Fest pictures are below...
